summary This paper presents a 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) experiment at the full scale of virtualarchitectural bodies developed through a computational technique based on the use of Cellular Automata (CA). The theoretical concept behind this technique is the decoding of errors in form generation and the invention of a process that would recreate the errors as a response to optimization (Adilenidou 2015). The generative design process established a family of structural and formal elements whose proliferation is guided through sets of differential grids (multi-grids) leading to the build-up of large span structures and edifices, for example, a cathedral. This tooling system is capable of producing, with specific inputs, a large number of outcomes in different scales. However, the resulting virtual surfaces could be considered as "unprintable" either due to their need of extra support or due to the presence of many cavities in the surface topology. The above characteristics could be categorized as errors, malfunctions, or undesired details in the geometry of a form that would need to be eliminated to prepare it for printing. This research project attempts to transform these "fabrication imprecisions" through new 3DCP techniques into factors of robustness of the resulting structure. The process includes the elimination of the detail / "errors" of the surface and their later reinsertion as structural folds that would strengthen the assembly. Through this process, the tangible outputs achieved fulfill design and functional requirements without compromising their structural integrity due to the manufacturing constraints.

summary Computational design and fabrication have reached an accomplished level of ubiquity and proficiency in the field of architecture, in both academia and practice. Materiality driving structure, responsiveness, and spatial organization can be seen to evolve, in kind, with the capabilities to fabricate deeper material hierarchies. Such maturity of a procedural material-driven approach spurs a need to shift from the dictations of how to explorations of why material efficiencies, bespoke aesthetics, and performativity are critical to a particular architecture, requiring an examination of linkages between approach, techniques, and process. The material system defines a branch of architectural research utilizing bespoke computational techniques to generate performative material capacities that are inextricably linked to both internal and external forces and energies. This paper examines such a self-referential view to define an expanded ecological approach that integrates new modes of design agency and shift the material system from closed-loop relationship with site to open-ended reciprocation with human behavior. The critical need for this capacity is shown in applications of novel textile hybrid material systems—as sensorially-responsive environments for children with the neurological autism spectrum disorder—in ongoing research titled Social Sensory Architectures. Through engaging fabrication across all material scales, manners of elastic responsivity are shown, through a series of feasibility studies, to exhibit a capacity for children to become design agents in exploring the beneficial interrelationship of sensorimotor agency and social behavior. The paper intends to contribute a theoretical approach by which novel structural capacities of a material system can support a larger ecology of social and behavioral agency.

summary Platforms that integrate developments from multiple disciplines are becoming increasingly relevant as the complexity of different technologies increases day by day. In this context, this paper describes an integrative approach for the development of architectural projects. It portrays the benefits of applying such an approach by describing its implementation throughout the development and execution of a building demonstrator. Through increasing the agility and extending the scope of existing computational tools, multiple collaborators were empowered to generate innovative solutions across the different phases of the project´s cycle. For this purpose, novel solutions for planar segmented wood shells are showcased at different levels. First, it is demonstrated how the application of a sophisticated hollow-cassette building system allowed the optimization of material use, production time, and mounting logistics due to the modulation of the parameters of each construction element. Second, the paper discusses how the articulation of that complexity was crucial when negotiating between multiple professions, interacting with different contractors, and complying with corresponding norms. Finally, the innovative architectural features of the resulting building are described, and the accomplishments are benchmarked through comparison with typological predecessor.

summary In normative or prescriptive theories, architectural requirements are set as parameters to support design decisions. A set of formal parameters is suffice to generate a wide variety of compositions, but associated to the same formal language. This paper looks at the work of the Portuguese-Brazilian architect, Delfim Fernandes Amorim, whose contributions to the dissemination of modern ideas and the development of a particular architectural lexicon is quite relevant, particularly his addendum to the municipal land use and occupation act, which became generally known as the Amorim's Law. It consists basically in allowing spaces of transitory occupation and specific architectural elements to be built beyond the mandatory setback limits. This paper presents the development of a grammar that shows how some of the parameters described in Amorim's law are able to create a strong formal language and influence the building's architectural composition. The grammar was developed in two successive stages: the first allows the generation of the pattern of adjacency of the apartment's rooms; the second, guide the insertion of the openings and architectural elements as defined by the Amorim's Law.

summary The context of digital fabrication allows architects to reinvestigate material, process and the design decisions they entail to explore novel expression in architecture. This demands a new approach to design thinking, as well as the relevant tools to couple the form of artefacts with the process in which they are made. This paper presents a customised computational design tool developed for exploring the novel design space of Concrete Extrusion 3D Printing (CE3DP), enabling a reinterpretation of the concrete column building typology. This tool allows the designer to access generative engines such as trigonometric functions and mesh subdivision through an intuitive graphical user interface. Balancing process efficiency as understood by our industry with a strong design focus, we aim to articulate the unique architectural qualities inherent to CE3DP, energising much needed innovation in concrete technology.

summary This paper proposes a fuzzy-based approach for the automated evaluation of spatial layout configurations. Our objective is to evaluate soft and interdependent design qualities (such as connectedness, enclosure, spaciousness, continuity, adjacency, etc.), to satisfy multiple and mutually inclusive criteria, and to account for all potential and logical solutions without discarding preferable, likely or even less likely possible solutions. Using fuzzyTECH, a fuzzy logic software development tool, we devise all possible spatial relation inputs affecting physical and non-physical outputs for a given space using descriptive rule blocks. We implement this fuzzy logic system on an existing residential space to evaluate different layout alternatives. We define all linguistic input variables, output variables, and fuzzy sets, and present space-space relations using membership functions. We use the resulting database of fuzzy agents to evaluate the design of the existing residential spaces.

summary Architectural surfaces constantly emit radiant heat fluxes to their surroundings, a phenomenon that is wholly dependent on their geometry and material properties. Therefore, the capacity of 3D scanning techniques to capture the geometry of building surfaces should be extended to sense and capture the surfaces’ thermal behavior in real time. We present an innovative sensor, SMART (Spherical-Motion Average Radiant Temperature Sensor), which captures the thermal characteristics of the built environment by coupling laser geometry scanning with infrared surface temperature detection. Its novelty lies in the combination of the two sensor technologies into an analytical device for radiant temperature mapping. With a sensor-based dynamic thermal-surface model, it is possible to achieve representation and control over one of the major factors affecting human comfort. The results for a case-study of a 3D thermal scan conducted in the recently completed Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University are compared with simulation results based on a detailed BIM model of the same space.

summary This paper presents a critical analysis and reflection on stereotomy with the purpose of updating its theoretical discourse. Having risen to the apex of architecture technological possibilities in the 17th century, stereotomic construction lost its importance in favour of iron, steel and other materials and construction techniques brought by the Industrial Revolution. More recently, much owing to the possibilities offered by digital technologies, a resurgence of interest in the subject has spawned various researches which bring stereotomy back to the architectural discourse. Although technological applications and design innovations in service of stereotomy have developed in multiple interesting paths, there is a lack of a common theory on the subject which is capable of relating these multiple apparently diverging stereotomic approaches between each other and, maybe even more importantly, to the classical practice which sparked the development this discipline. The research presented in this paper shows how the digital tools were instrumental in bringing this tradition to architecture contemporaneity and how a current stereotomy is largely supported by these technologies, while keeping strong relations to its classic origin.

summary This paper is part of an ongoing research project on flexible molds for use in concrete fabrication. It continues and advances the concept of adjustable molds by creating a flexible system to produce a variety of concrete grid-joints. This reusable and adaptive mold streamlines the process of fabricating inherently diverse nodal joints without the need for cost-intensive mass-customization methods. The paper also proposes a novel way to cope with some of the significant drawbacks of similar mold techniques that have been explored and found wanting in similar projects. The technique used for the mold in the current research is inspired by a flexible mechanism that has been implemented in other manufacturing contexts, such as expansion joints and bendable straws. The outcomes of the project are a platform called “Flexi-node” and relevant software components that allow users to computationally design and fabricate a great variety of concrete joints for grid structures, using just one mold, with minimum material waste and no distortion from hydrostatic pressure.

summary In contemporary data-driven society, forces of capital increasingly seek risk-averse decision making through data and digital calculation, aligned to this the discourse around design intelligence in architecture has begun to embrace the role of data and the technical non-human as much as the human. In parallel, the cultural understanding of data, in technologically mediated societies, has become tied to the digital representation of information experienced in everyday life, which in turn influences human practices. A problem exists in the dominance of scientific thought around data in architecture that exerts disciplinary bias towards quantity rather than quality. In contemporary digital practice, data is assumed to offer an objective characterisation of the world and have faithful representation through the mechanisms of the computer. From this shift, a macro question exists concerning the influence of data's conceptualisation on the physical products of architecture. To contribute to this overall question this paper considers the register of data in early modernism identified as a moment when scientific abstraction and the mapping capacity of the machine combine to afford recognisable data practices and infrastructures.

summary Advancements in robotic fabrication are enabling on-site construction in increasingly larger scales. In this paper, we argue that as autonomous tools encounter the territorial scale, they open new ways to embed information into it. To define the new practice, this paper introduces a protocol combining a theoretical framework and an iterative process titled Informing Grounds. This protocol mediates and supports the exchange of knowledge between a digital and a physical environment and is applicable to a variety of materials with uncertain characteristics in a robotic manufacturing scenario. The process is applied on soil and demonstrated through a recent design-to-fabrication workshop that focused on simulating digital groundscaping of distant lunar grounds employing robotic sand-forming. The first stage is ‘sampling’—observing the physical domain both as an initial step as well as a step between the forming cycles to update the virtual model. The second stage is ‘streaming’—the generation of information derived from the digital model and its projection onto the physical realm. The third stage is ‘transforming’—the shaping of the sand medium through a physical gesture. The workshop outcomes serve as the basis for discussion regarding the challenges posed by applying autonomous robotic tools on materials with uncertain behavior at a large-scale.

summary By introducing rapid reproduction, algorithms, and complex formal configurations, the digital era of architecture began a revolution. Architects incorporated the computational capacity of the computer into the design process both as a tool and as a critical component of the theories and practice of architecture as a whole. As we move into what has been coined “the second digital turn,” a period in which digital integration is considered ubiquitous, how can we consider, prepare, and propel towards the next technological innovation to significantly inform design thinking, representation, and manifestation? What tools are available to investigate this speculative design future and how can they be implemented? If the integration of technology in architecture is now a given, perhaps the next digital design era is not just digital but virtual. As new technologies emerge the potential for integrating the virtual design world with our physical senses affords novel possibilities for interactive design, simulation, analysis and construction. Hybrid reality technologies including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), embody the potential to supersede conventional representation methodologies such as drawing, rendering, physical modeling, and animation. As they become increasingly pervasive, they will transform how we communicate ideas and data as spatial concepts. Further, they will reform the construct of the built environment when applied to both materiality and fabrication. This paper will describe the incorporation of VR as a tool in various classroom and laboratory settings, recognize the educational outcomes of this incorporation, and identify the potential relationship of these technologies to future academic exploration and application to practice.

summary Architecture has always followed and adopted technological breakthroughs of other areas. As a case in point, in the last decades, the field of computation changed the face of architectural practice. Considering the recent breakthroughs of Machine Learning (ML), it is expectable to see architecture adopting ML-based approaches. However, it is not yet clear how much this adoption will change the architectural practice and in order to forecast this change it is necessary to understand the foundations of ML and its impact in other fields of human activity. This paper discusses important ML techniques and areas where they were successfully applied. Based on those examples, this paper forecast hypothetical uses of ML in the realm of building design. In particular, we examine ML approaches in conceptualization, algorithmization, modeling, and optimization tasks. In the end, we conjecture potential applications of such approaches, suggest future lines of research, and speculate on the future face of the architectural profession.

summary This paper explores through professional case studies how design solutions produced by expert teams compares to those developed through systematic parametric analysis. While the expert intuition of either single designer or teams helps to rapidly identify relevant aspects of the design problem and produce viable solutions, it has limitation to address multi-criteria design problems with conflicting objectives and searching for design alternatives. On the other hand, parametric analysis techniques in combination with data analysis methods helps to construct and analyze large design spaces of potential design solutions. For the purpose of this study, the specifications of geometric features and material properties of the building envelopes proposed by the expert design teams define the base line to measure the extent of the performance improvements of two typically conflicting objectives: Daylight quality and energy consumption. The results show consistently significant performance improvement after systematic optimization.

summary This paper examines a novel, integrated and collaborative approach to design and fabrication, enabled through Mixed Reality. In a bespoke fabrication process, the design is controlled and altered by users in holographic space, through a custom, multi-modal interface. Users input is live-streamed and channeled to 3D modelling environment,on-demand robotic fabrication and AR-guided assembly. The Holographic Interface is aimed at promoting man-machine collaboration. A bespoke pipeline translates hand gestures and audio into CAD and numeric fabrication. This enables non-professional participants engage with a plethora of novel technology. The feasibility of Mixed Reality for architectural workflow was tested through an interactive installation for the makeCity Berlin 2018 festival. Participants experienced with on-demand design, fabrication an AR-guided assembly. summary Natural load bearing structures are characterized by aspects of specialized morphology, lightweight, adaptability, and a regenerative life cycle. PolyBrick 2.0 aims to learn from and apply these characteristics in the pursuit of revitalizing ceramic load bearing structures. For this, algorithmic design processes are employed, whose physical manifestations are realized through available clay/porcelain additive manufacturing technologies (AMTs). By integrating specialized expertise across disciplines of architecture, engineering, and material science, our team proposes an algorithmic toolset to generate PolyBrick geometries that can be applied to various architectural typologies. Additionally, comparative frameworks for digital and physical performance analyses are outlined. Responding to increasing urgencies of material efficiency and environmental sensibility, this project strives to provide for designers a toolset for environmentally responsive, case-specific design, characterized by the embedded control qualities derived from the bone and its adaptability to specific loading conditions. Various approaches to brick tessellation and assembly are proposed and architectural possibilities are presented. As an outcome of this research, PolyBrick 2.0 is effectively established as a Grasshopper plug-in, “PolyBrick” to be further explored by designers.

summary The aim of this ongoing doctoral research is to rely on the incommensurable potential held in Japanese Katagami patterns in order to translate them into three-dimensional speculative architectures and architectural components that afford architects other design approaches differentiated from systemic and typical space configurations. While many designers are diving in the generative and computational design world by developing new personal methods, we would like to recycle the existing production of Katagami patterns into three-dimensional architectural elements that will perpetuate work of Katagami artists beyond time, borders, and scope of applicability. Given that the current digital shift has given us more computation power, we are broadening Katagami with new fabrication strategies and new methods to explore, produce, and stock geometry and data. In this paper, we rely on the Processing library IGeo (developed by Satoru Sugihara) to build bottom-up agent-based algorithms to study the architectural potential of Katagami patterns as a top-down clean and simple initial topology that avoids imitation of standard templates applied during the process of configuring and planning architectural space.

summary The paper presents the outcome of two semesters running a dynamic façade design studio (2014 and 2018) to 3rd and 4th year undergraduates, using computational design, simulation and visualization tools in designing environmentally activated building envelopes. The paper discusses the problems faced by the students and the teaching team throughout the design process and finally suggests ways of integrating microcontrollers as a teaching tool enabling students to comprehend the logic, complexities and overall mechanics of responsive environmental design.

summary With fast development of new technologies built environment transitioned from a silent background of activities performed by users to another participant of those activities. Agency of interactive architecture is based on interpretation of input data, like users’ actions, their response to the spatial agency, data from environment or other actors, and changing its performance accordingly. Architectural components, environmental conditions and people are all treated as agents and closely correspond to Actor-Network Theory (ANT). This theory generally aims to reveal the complexities of socio-technological world. ANT incorporates a principle of generalized symmetry, it means that human and nonhuman (artifacts, organization structures, etc.) actors are incorporated into the same conceptual framework and assigned equal level of agency. By analysis of the agency of Interactive Architecture through ANT the paper provides insight on social role of this new emerging type of space and its influence on other participants on socio-technological relationship.

summary Embedded computation allows built space to be intelligent and get smarter, becoming interactive and gaining agency with ability not to merely adapt to changing conditions, but to process information and react, observe and learn, communicate and make decisions. The paper investigates agency of interactive space based on interpretation of input data, like users' response to the spatial agency, data from environment or other actors, and ability to change its performance accordingly. The research is focused on the role of interactive space as an active participant in social relationship communicating with users, constantly changing and having its' attitude. The research is aimed at defining social role of interactive environments and explains how they interact with users, what qualities are enabled by interactive behaviour and how do they influence space perception, revealing the significance of bi-directional communication between society and smart spaces. Interactive space does not just providing location for activities and facility for lifestyle, but influences these activities. Users and interactive space constitute one social network being constantly aware of each other establishing bi-directional communication.
