summary This article explains the evolution towards the subject of digital fabrication of thin shell structures, searching for the computational design techniques which allow to implement biological pattern mechanisms for efficient fabrication procedures. The method produces data sets in order to analyse and evaluate parallel alternatives of branching topologies, segmentation patterns, material usage, weight and deflection values as a user learning process. The importance here is given to the selection of the appropriate attributes, referring to which specific geometric characteristics of the parametric model are affecting each other and with what impact. The outcomes are utilized to train an Artificial Neural Network to predict new building information based on new combinations of desired parameters so that the user can decide and adjust the design based on the new information.

summary With academic curricula for architectural education increasingly packed with new and expanding fields of inquiry, questions emerge on how to incorporate the ever-growing number of subjects that tackle the use of computational tools for design and delivery. This paper analyses approaches to blended learning under a semi-flipped classroom model where learning content gets divided into complementary in-class and online components. The author describes the epistemological challenges in curating the blended-learning mix and discusses ways to optimise learning outcomes while minimising the effort for custom content-development of training material. Two subjects taught at the author's home institution (one in Computational Design and the other for BIM education) serve as case studies to test the flipped classroom approach and to derive feedback from students about their preferred method of delivery.

summary The digital design appears as an integrated process from conceptualization to materialization and fabrication. The main question is: How the new medium changed the workflow in architecture from a linear model to a cyclic model and the role of new materialization as a form of design thinking? This paper is part of a study that investigates the architectural design process and starts from the premise that we should expand the study of design methods to include other approaches. It considers digital fabrication not as a tool, but as an integrated strategy in collaborative digital processes that can allow a better communication along the design process. It presents the development of design methodologies in order to contribute to a greater understanding of the methodology for design projects with caution to the fact that each one reflects the period in which it was developed.

summary The Architecture of ScarCity Game is a board game used as a pedagogical tool that challenges architecture students by involving them in a series of experimental design sessions to understand the design process of scarcity and the actual relation between the craft and the digital. This means "pragmatic delivery processes and material constraints, where the exchange between the artisan of handmade, representing local skills and technology of the digitally conceived is explored" (Huang 2013). The game focuses on understanding the different variables of the crafted design process of traditional communities under conditions of scarcity (Michel and Bevan 1992). This requires first analyzing the spatial environmental model of interaction, available human and natural resources, and the dynamic relationship of these variables in a digital era. In the first stage (Pre-Agency), the game set the concept of the craft by limiting students design exploration from a minimum possible perspective developing locally available resources and techniques. The key elements of the design process of traditional knowledge communities have to be identified (Preez 1984). In other words, this stage is driven by limited resources + chance + contingency. In the second stage (Post-Agency) students taking the architects´ role within this communities, have to speculate and explore the interface between the craft (local knowledge and low technological tools), and the digital represented by computation data, new technologies available and construction. This means the introduction of strategy + opportunity + chance as part of the design process. In this sense, the game has a life beyond its mechanics. This other life challenges the participants to exploit the possibilities of breaking the actual boundaries of design. The result is a tool to challenge conventional methods of teaching and leaning controlling a prescribed design process. It confronts the rules that professionals in this field take for granted. The game simulates a 'fake' reality by exploring in different ways with surveyed information. As a result, participants do not have anything 'real' to lose. Instead, they have all the freedom to innovate and be creative.

summary This paper presents the prototyping of new methods by which functionally graded materials can be specified and produced. The paper presents a case study exploring how machine learning can be used to train a model in order to predict fabrication files from formalised design requirements. By using knit as a model for material fabrication, the paper outlines the making of new cyclical design methods employing machine learning in which simpler prototypical materials acts as input for more complex graded materials. A case study - Ombre - showcases the implementation of this workflow and results and perspectives are discussed.

summary Gaining rigidity and strength from malleable and flexible parts is the key challenge in the emerging field of bending-active structures. The goal of this construction approach is to use the large elastic deformations of planar elements for the building of complex curved structures. Aiming to contribute to this research and to make new discoveries, the authors of this paper will look at nature for inspiration and explore how structures in the plant kingdom successfully combine high flexibility with high resilience. The focus of this study are the structural principles found in fibrous cactus skeletons. Not only do the cactus skeletons show impressive structural behavior, but also their optimized form, fiber orientation, and material distribution can inspire the further development of bending-active structures. Learning from these models, the authors will present key cactus-inspired design principles and test their practical feasibility in a prototypical installation made from millimeter-thin strips of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP). Similar to the biological role model, this 6-meter-tall lamellar structure takes advantage of clever cross-bracing strategies that significantly increase stability and improve resilience. The authors explain in more detail the underlying design and construction methods and discuss the possible impact this research may have on the further development of bending-active structures.

summary This paper presents a strategy for implementing computational methods in education to solve specific project related research challenges. In our case, we investigate novel solutions for Organic Photovoltaic Carrier Systems. Therefore, environmental forces (especially the sun and shade) are important design drivers in all projects. Whilst the individual projects are limited to one semester, it is our aim to advance and accumulate these patches within a longer-term research strategy. Especially design-build projects that include digital fabrication often require a skillset not always available in a design studio environment. Providing simple parametric patches frees up time for creative investigations and allows tackling projects that are more complex. In the following, we will present and discuss a series of patches developed over the course of five projects that became our case studies. We conclude, by identifying relevant aspects that might be generalized and evaluate our insights for others.

summary This paper is a take on contemporary works in wood designed with parametric softwares and seen from an academic and professional point of view. The knowledge about digital wood developed through Digital Fabrication Laboratories has proved to be effective but with certain limitations when used for real constructions. In fact, translating the freedom of building temporary architectures -which is usually one of the "learn by doing" activities of design studio or workshops- into wood architecture that respect all the constraints of real construction is a challenge. This paper shows several experiences where innovative ideas developed through research have been applied to temporary pavilions and real constructions in Japan, Italy and France.

summary This paper introduces and discusses the first outcome of a recently created digital fabrication laboratory at Favela da Maré, a slum in the North zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The lab called FavLab is a partnership between the Jo?o e Maria Aleixo Institute, located inside Favela da Maré, and the Department of Architecture and Urbanism of PUC-Rio University. More specifically, it aims to present the lab's first activity: a workshop devoted to create and fabricate meaningful objects to the context of favela exploiting digital design and fabrication methods. Architecture undergraduates and local young residents not enrolled in the educational system participated in the studio. This paper aims to discuss in details the experience of teaching for this particular group of students, as well as the impacts of the collaborative design between university and favela students to create interactive objects in a Brazilian community. The paper aims to reinforce and remark an innovative and inclusive approach to digital design and fabrication. This paper also attempts to discuss further developments and next steps towards more profound and broader collaboration between academia and favelas' representatives.

summary This paper documents the computational design methods, digital fabrication strategies, and generative design process for [Lumen], winner of MoMA & MoMA PS1’s 2017 Young Architects Program. The project was installed in the courtyard at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, New York, during the summer of 2017. Two lightweight 3D digitally knitted fabric canopy structures composed of responsive tubular and cellular components employ recycled textiles, photo-luminescent and solar active yarns that absorb and store UV energy, change color, and emit light. This environment offers spaces of respite, exchange, and engagement as a 150 x 75-foot misting system responds to visitors’ proximity, activating fabric stalactites that produce a refreshing micro-climate. Families of robotically prototyped and woven recycled spool chairs provide seating throughout the courtyard. The canopies are digitally fabricated with over 1,000,000 yards of high tech responsive yarn and are supported by three 40+ foot tensegrity towers and the surrounding matrix of courtyard walls. Material responses to sunlight as well as physical participation are integral parts of our exploratory approach to the 2017 YAP brief. The project is mathematically generated through form-finding simulations informed by the sun, site, materials, program, and the material morphology of knitted cellular components. Resisting a biomimetic approach, [Lumen] employs an analogic design process where complex material behavior and processes are integrated with personal engagement and diverse programs. The comprehensive installation was designed by Jenny Sabin Studio and fabricated by Shima Seiki WHOLEGARMENT, Jacobsson Carruthers, and Dazian with structural engineering by Arup and lighting by Focus Lighting.

summary This paper is part of an ongoing research project on flexible molds for use in concrete fabrication. It continues and advances the concept of adjustable molds by creating a flexible system to produce a variety of concrete grid-joints. This reusable and adaptive mold streamlines the process of fabricating inherently diverse nodal joints without the need for cost-intensive mass-customization methods. The paper also proposes a novel way to cope with some of the significant drawbacks of similar mold techniques that have been explored and found wanting in similar projects. The technique used for the mold in the current research is inspired by a flexible mechanism that has been implemented in other manufacturing contexts, such as expansion joints and bendable straws. The outcomes of the project are a platform called “Flexi-node” and relevant software components that allow users to computationally design and fabricate a great variety of concrete joints for grid structures, using just one mold, with minimum material waste and no distortion from hydrostatic pressure.

summary This study presents an approach for the intelligent generation of architectural layout, in which partial space inherits Chinese garden spatial features. The approach combines spatial prototype analysis and evolutionary optimization process. On one hand, from the perspective of shape grammar, this paper both analyzes and abstracts the spatial prototype that describes the spatial characteristics of Chinese gardens, including the organization system of architecture and landscape, with the spatial sequences along the tourism orientation. On the other hand, taking the design task of Lotus teahouse as an example, a typical spatial prototype is selected to develop the generative intelligent experiment to achieve the architectural layout, in which the spatial prototype is inherited. Through rule-making and parameter adjustment, the spatial prototype will eventually be transformed into a computational model based on the multi-agent system. Hence, the experiment of intelligent generation of architectural layout is carried out under the influence of the function, form and environmental factors; and a three-dimensional conceptual model that inherits the Chinese garden spatial prototype is obtained ultimately.

summary The Hummingbird is an amazing creature. The male Anna’s Hummingbird changes color from dark green to iridescence pink in his spectacular courtship. Can we exploit this phenomenon to produce color and shape changing material systems for the future of design? This paper describes the design process behind the interactive installation, Iridescence, through the logic of two interconnected themes, ‘morphology’ and ‘behavior’. Inspired by the gorget of the Anna’s hummingbird, this 3D printed collar is equipped with a facial tracking camera and an array of 200 rotating quills. The custom-made actuators flip their colors and start to make patterns, in response to the movement of onlookers and their facial expressions. The paper addresses how wearables can become a vehicle for self-expression, capable of influencing social interaction and enhancing one’s sensory experience of the world. Through the lens of this project, the paper proposes ‘bio-inspired emotive matter’ as an interdisciplinary design approach at the intersection of Affective Computing, Artificial Intelligence and Ethology, which can be applied in many design fields. The paper argues that bio-inspired material systems should be used not just for formal or performative reasons, but also as an interface for human emotions to address psycho-social issues.

summary This paper reports the design, fabrication and evaluation strategies of full-scale aluminium panel prototypes developed for a kinetic hybrid facade system. The concept of a hybrid facade system was proposed as a solution to maximise the value of kinetic intelligent building systems by repurposing the animation sunscreening as a low-resolution media display. The overarching research project investigates the potential, feasibility and real-life applications of a hybrid facade that integrates the: environmental, media and individual micro-control functions in one compound system that operates through autonomous wirelessly controlled hexagonal rotating panels. The study explores new ways of communication and connectivity in architectural and urban context, utilising and fusing together a wide range of technologies including: artificial intelligence, robotics, wireless control technologies, calibration of physical and digital simulations, development of fully autonomous self-organised and powered units and the use of additive digital manufacturing. This article reports the third research stage of the hybrid facade project development - the manufacture of full scale panel prototypes.

summary In the built environment, the typical means of achieving responsive changes in the physical features of a structure is through energy-intensive actuation mechanisms that contradict the intended goal of energy-efficient performance. Nature offers several alternative energy-free examples of achieving large-scale shape change through passive actuation mechanisms, such as the intrinsic response of water-absorbing (hygroscopic) materials to humidity fluctuations. We utilize this principle of passive actuation in the context of chitosan biopolymer, a material demonstrating a combination of mechanical strength and hygroscopic potential that enables it to serve for both load-bearing and actuation purposes. By inserting biocomposite films of chitosan as dynamic tensile members into a space truss, a structural system is constructed whose variable structural performance is manipulated and expressed as a large-scale, programmable, and fast-acting shape change. We present a method for rationalizing this responsive structural system as an assembly using a combination of materials engineering and digital design and fabrication. As a proof-of-concept, a two-meter-long fiber-reinforced cantilevering truss prototype was designed and fabricated. The truss transforms in minutes from one shape that shelters the interior from rain to another shape that acts as an air foil to increase ventilation.

summary With the rapid increase in the accessible data, available information surpasses one's ability to extract knowledge from, which puts a great emphasis on the skills of the individual to reach and use relevant information, adapt to changing conditions and sustain respective skills. ICT skills, critical thinking skills, and communication/collaboration skills emerge as the survival skills and key factors for individuals to cope with the demands of the 21st-century. It is known that educational institutions have struggles in changing the curricula/teaching system in coping with the requirements of the rapidly evolving industry. Thus, workshops gained more importance in different levels which are a part of curricular or extracurricular activities to re-furnish existing skills or gain new skills. In the scope of this study, the learning and teaching approaches based on STEAM approach are assessed through a three-day workshop aiming to illustrate how these survival skills can be conveyed and embedded into the architecture education. The workshop is designed to be inclusive for all architecture students regardless of their level of education or background knowledge/skills. Within the scope of this paper, the conduction strategies of the workshop are covered in detail to highlight the importance of these survival skills along with the modes of teaching and share the best practices and gained knowledge for future works.

summary This paper presents a modular, digital construction system for lightweight spatial structures made from reinforced concrete. For design and fabrication, a digital workflow is presented, which includes the rationalization of a freeform geometry into adaptive spatial modules made up entirely of planar components. For fast and precise fabrication, these components are 3D printed using a novel 3D concrete printing technology called "Shotcrete 3D Printing". The ongoing research is demonstrated by an initial real-scale prototype of one exemplary spatial module. Lastly, the paper provides an outlook into future research, which is necessary to make this digital construction system applicable to the real-scale construction of large, wide-spanning structures.

summary Digital design techniques have improved significantly to enable designers to design with fewer limitations. However, the construction methods to fabricate these design proposals are still lagging behind due to a lack of skilled labour, material constraints, and the effects of gravity. Augmented reality has been developed in recent years, and this allows users to impose 3D virtual objects onto the real world. This essay will thus discuss whether augmented reality can guide unskilled labourers to complete complex work, thus overcoming one of the constraints on fabrication for complicated construction. This essay covers the results of three augmented reality tests using a Kinect device, a projector, and Microsoft HoloLens. It aims to show that augmented reality can indeed be used to guide unskilled labourers during construction to narrow the gap between complex design methods and basic construction techniques. The results indicate that augmented reality can guide such fabrication and thus improve construction methods.

summary This paper discusses the potential of emerging digital fabrication techniques to produce material-efficient thin folded concrete structures. Although in the 50s and 60s folded structures provided a common optimal solution for spanning large distances without additional vertical supports, today, the number of these projects decreased significantly due to their complicated formworks and labour-intensive realization. Digital fabrication methods for concrete hold the promise to efficiently produce intricate folded mass-customized shapes with enhanced load-bearing capacity. This paper focuses on a robotic slip-forming process, Smart Dynamic Casting (SDC), to produce various thin-walled folded concrete elements with the same formwork providing smooth surface finish and gradual variations along the height. An empirical research methodology was applied to evaluate the fabrication feasibility of digitally designed thin folded geometries with one-to-one scale prototypes. Despite the discovered design limitations due to fabrication and material constraints, the exploration led to a new promising research direction, termed 'Digital Casting'.

summary The paper documents the design and development of an additive manufacturing process based on stone aggregates. Unlike conventional 3D printing technologies which target miniaturization of the material grain and deposition layers to achieve as high resolution as possible, our process deploys sizeable and randomized grains of stone. The objective of this is to leverage between physical scale of the particulate and time it takes to produce large enough artefacts, fast enough to potentially evoke spatial qualities. Perhaps unavoidably, due to its materiality, the process revisits one of the most archaic methods of building technology, namely masonry, and suggests for a unique digital perspective for structures and landscapes made from stone.
