title Computational modeling for climate change: Simulating and visualizing a resilient landscape architecture design approach

summary Coastlines are changing, wildfires are raging, cities are getting hotter, and spatial designers are charged with the task of designing to mitigate these unknowns. This research examines computational digital workflows to understand and alleviate the impacts of climate change on urban landscapes. The methodology includes two separate simulation and visualization workflows. The first workflow uses an animated particle fluid simulator in combination with geographic information systems data, Photoshop software, and three-dimensional modeling and animation software to simulate erosion and sedimentation patterns, coastal inundation, and sea level rise. The second workflow integrates building information modeling data, computational fluid dynamics simulators, and parameters from EnergyPlus and Landsat to produce typologies and strategies for mitigating urban heat island effects. The effectiveness of these workflows is demonstrated by inserting design prototypes into modeled environments to visualize their success or failure. The result of these efforts is a suite of workflows which have the potential to vastly improve the efficacy with which architects and landscape architects use existing data to address the urgency of climate change.

summary Sky view factor (SVF) is the ratio of radiation received by a planar surface from the sky to that received from the entire hemispheric radiating environment, in the past 20 years, it was more applied to urban-climatic areas such as urban air temperature analysis. With the urbanization and the development of cities, SVF has been paid more and more attention on as the important parameter in urban construction and city planning area because of increasing building coverage ratio to promote urban forms and help creating a more comfortable and sustainable urban residential building environment to citizens. Therefore, efficient, low cost, high precision, easy to operate, rapid building-wide SVF estimation method is necessary. In the field of image processing, semantic segmentation based on deep learning have attracted considerable research attention. This study presents a new method to estimate the SVF of residential environment by constructing a deep learning network for segmenting the sky areas from 360-degree camera images. As the result of this research, an easy-to-operate estimation system for SVF based on high efficiency sky label mask images database was developed.

summary The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect is pronounced in dense urban developments, and particular an issue in the case study city of Parramatta, where temperature increases are impacting use of public space, health, and economic productivity. To mitigate against elevated temperatures in built up areas, this research explores the optimisation of paving material layouts through using an evolutionary algorithm. High albedo (reflective) materials are objectively cooler than low albedo (absorbent) materials yet tend to be more expensive. To reduce the amount of heat absorbent pavement materials whilst keeping in mind material costs, a range of materials of different albedo levels (reflectivity) can be assigned on the same path using an evolutionary algorithm to optimise the coolest materials for the cheapest price. Over the course of this paper, this research aim will be approached using visual scripting software such as Grasshopper to simulate daylight analysis and to generate an optimisation algorithm. Previous research on the topics of UHI have revealed different methods for solving specific problems, all focusing on using software analysis to determine an informed decision on construction. The paper contributes via a computational approach of material selection to battle urban heat island effects.

summary The paper presents research for wind-responsive architecture. The main objective is the digital design methodology incorporating the dynamic, fluctuating wind flow into the shape-generating process of architectural envelopes. These computational studies are advanced and informed through physical prototyping models, allowing a hybrid method approach. The negative impacts of the wind at the building scale (wind loads), as well as urban scale (wind discomfort), can be avoided and even transformed into an advantage by incorporating the local wind conditions to the process of creating architectural envelopes with adaptive structures. The paper proposes a tensegrity-membrane system which, when exposed to the dynamic wind flow, enables a local passive shape adaptation. Thus, the action of the wind pressure transforms the shape of the building envelope to an unsmoothed, dimpled surface. As a consequence, the aerodynamic properties of the building are modified, which contributes to reducing wind suction and drag force. Moreover, the slight shape change materializes and articulates the immaterial wind phenomena. For a better understanding of the dynamic geometric properties, one unit of the wind-responsive envelope is tested through simulations, and through physical prototypes. The idea and material-geometric studies are subsequently applied in a specific case study, including a designed building envelope in an industrial silo cluster in Stockholm.

summary Due to its geographic size and long cultural history of fluctuating borders, China has a large number of historic settlements; each with their own unique geometric, cultural, social, and spatial characteristics. Despite the various studies that have attempted to qualitatively describe the spatial properties of historic towns, there are limited attempts to understand the spatial qualities of these towns through a quantitative approach, such as space syntax. This paper proposes and demonstrates a computational approach based on space syntax to map spatial properties of these towns. Four spatial features are examined and evaluated to capture the spatial patterns of Chinese historic towns: (1) axiality, (2) curvature, (3) intelligibility, and (4) synergy. The approach has been applied to four typical towns in China: Pingyao, Lijiang, Kulangsu, and Wuzhen. This computational approach provides a new way to complement existing qualitative measures of understanding the urban form and use of historic towns, providing a powerful tool to support the development of policy affecting historic town design/planning, heritage conservation, and heritage tourism.

summary The article presents the application of the Visual Protection Surface (VPS) method in protecting waterfront panoramas. The digital analysis of visual impact, which is most frequently used in urban planning, assesses the impact of new investment on the cityscape. The study presented in the article is based on a reverse approach -determining the maximum height of buildings so new facilities do not distort protected vistas in a city, vistas which are crucial for the preservation of the city's cultural identity and spatial identification. The assessment of the application is based on a case study of Gdañsk, Poland, where a 3D LiDAR model was used. The study involved the use of software developed by the author (C++). It also analyzed VPS input parameters. Conclusions can be used to assess and verify analysis findings with different software (GIS/CAD). The article shows the potential application of the VPS method in urban planning.

summary In this paper, I present the commercial, urban-scale gunshot detection system ShotSpotter in contrast with a range of ecological sensing examples which monitor animal vocalizations. Gunshot detection sensors are used to alert law enforcement that a gunshot has occurred and to collect evidence. They are intertwined with processes of criminalization, in which the individual, rather than the collective, is targeted for punishment. Ecological sensors are used as a “passive” practice of information gathering which seeks to understand the health of a given ecosystem through monitoring population demographics, and to document the collective harms of anthropogenic change (Stowell and Sueur 2020). In both examples, the ability of sensing infrastructures to “join up and speed up” (Gabrys 2019, 1) is increasing with the use of machine learning to identify patterns and objects: a new form of expertise through which the differential agendas of these systems are implemented and made visible. I trace the differential agendas of these systems as they manifest through varied components: the spatial distribution of hardware in the existing urban environment and / or landscape; the software and other informational processes that organize and translate the data; the visualization of acoustical sensing data; the commercial factors surrounding the production of material components; and the apps, platforms, and other forms of media through which information is made available to different stakeholders. I take an interpretive and qualitative approach to the analysis of these systems as cultural artifacts (Winner 1980), to demonstrate how the political and social stakes of the technology are embedded throughout them.

summary In recent years, with the development of artificial intelligence and digital architecture, more architects begin to wonder how to generate urban planning and urban design through computational method. For the purpose of generating urban planning digitally using computational algorithms, we design a series of algorithms to develop a system that evaluates initial features of the site such as the strength of sunlight, water, landscape. These parameters related to the function zoning of the town were determined based on the data extracted from case studies. These data were integrated into a Markov chain mathematical model for the sake of analyzing the function of grid points. Finally, an algorithm of a multi-agent system was used to optimize the function that could evaluate the grade of each raster point of the town, which could be used to decide the function of a specific region.

summary The purpose of this paper is to use shape grammar methodology to generate contextualized urban façades within the focal context of Naser-Khosrow Street in Iran's capital city of Tehran. The history of Naser-Khosrow Street, which is considered a significant historic urban space, begins in the Safavid period (1735-1501). Yet, the urban history and historical significance of this street have been neglected in recent years. Evidence of a sense of turmoil and incompatibility between the modern and traditional architectural façades featured on the street is easily observed. Against this background, this paper offers façade models generated based on the computational methodology developed by Hadighi and Duarte (2019, 2020) to determine and capture the hybrid expression of European modernist and American traditional styles. In this spirit, the systematic methodology of shape grammar is expanded to the focal urban area of Naser-Khosrow Street to generate new façade layouts referencing the characteristic features of some of the iconic buildings located there.

summary Rural Vitalization being a nation-wide policy for China in the following five years, it is becoming even more important to preserve and conserve the village heritage, especially with the global background of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) involvement. This research reviews on the existing and potential methods which has been or could be used to better understand the rural built environment in the new data age, and proposes an interactive message platform named Rural Information Modelling (RIM) which could collect, storage, analyze and display the various message concerning the village heritage, especially the morphological, cognitive and behavioural information. With the help of RIM, stakeholders can better interact with the rural environment, and better negotiate with each other, leading to a more objective and rational construction process, which could express the willingness of both the outside architects, urban planners and visitors, and the in situ villagers and government.

summary This paper discusses the methodology and results of the Maslow's Palace workshops project, which engages with current debates surrounding the democratisation of digital urban design technology and stakeholder decision making, through the implementation of a speculative oriented approach to serious gaming. The research explores how serious games might be used to help marginalised communities consider past, future and present community experiences, reconcile dissimilar assumptions, generate social capital building and design responses and prime participants for further long term design engagement processes. Empirical material for this research was gathered from a range of case study workshops prepared with three landfill-based communities and external partners throughout 2017. Results show the approach helped participants develop shared norms, values and understandings of sensitive topics and develop ideas for future action through "collective tinkering".

summary We have seen increasing expectations from our cities: as we aim to enable them to become smarter, more efficient and more sustainable. Having these goals makes the urban designing process increasingly complex. Undertaking contemporary urban design and analysis requires a rounded and inclusive approach. In the discussion relating to the smart city there has been attention to infrastructure technology solutions. But ways of estimating the success of more comprehensive urban design interventions is also extremely important. In response to these needs, digital urban design simulation and analysis software packages have been developed to help urban designers model and evaluate their designs before they take shape in the real world. We analyse, and reflect on the current aids available, classifying the urban design software packages which were used in the body of knowledge. In addition, more influential urban design software packages have been reviewed to figure out in which stages of the urban design process, they have applied. This review also helpful for software developer to understand which software packages more useful and which ones need to be developed in future.

summary This study presents an approach for the intelligent generation of architectural layout, in which partial space inherits Chinese garden spatial features. The approach combines spatial prototype analysis and evolutionary optimization process. On one hand, from the perspective of shape grammar, this paper both analyzes and abstracts the spatial prototype that describes the spatial characteristics of Chinese gardens, including the organization system of architecture and landscape, with the spatial sequences along the tourism orientation. On the other hand, taking the design task of Lotus teahouse as an example, a typical spatial prototype is selected to develop the generative intelligent experiment to achieve the architectural layout, in which the spatial prototype is inherited. Through rule-making and parameter adjustment, the spatial prototype will eventually be transformed into a computational model based on the multi-agent system. Hence, the experiment of intelligent generation of architectural layout is carried out under the influence of the function, form and environmental factors; and a three-dimensional conceptual model that inherits the Chinese garden spatial prototype is obtained ultimately.

title The Evolution of CAADRIA Conferences - A Bibliometric Approach

summary This paper presents an analysis of the output, impact, use and content of 1,860 papers that were published in the CAADRIA conference proceedings over the last 20+ years (from 1996 to 2019). The applied methodology is a blend of bibliometrics, webometrics and clustering with text mining. The bibliometric analysis leads to quantitative and qualitative results on three levels: (1) author, (2) article and (3) association. The most productive authors authored over 50 papers, and the top 20% authors have over 80 % of all citations generated by CAADRIA proceedings. The overall impact of CAADRIA may be characterised by nearly 2,000 known citations and by the h-index that is 17. The webometrics based on CumInCAD.org reveals that the CAADRIA papers served over 200 k users, which is a considerable visibility for scientific CAAD output. The keywords most frequently used by authors were digital fabrication, BIM and parametric, generative, computational design. Notably, 90% of the papers' descriptors are 2-grams. This study may be useful to researchers, educators and publishers interested in CAAD.

summary In recent years, several advances have occurred concerning the legitimacy of precarious informal settlements in Brazil. In spite of this progress in the legal dimension, little has been made concerning standards to ensure urban space quality. The difficulties of reversing this exclusionary logic are due to several complex factors. A factor less discussed, especially in the national literature, but that has begun to draw the attention of scholars, is the invisibility of the informal city. This research assumes that it is necessary to regulate the urban form of precarious informal settlements, in order to prevent the deterioration of urban environmental quality. We highlight the importance to compile data about their urban form and their built environment, in order to contribute to a reality-based regulatory policy for these settlements, and this is the primary purpose of this study. To address this question, we propose a method of measuring the settlements' urban form, based on the City Information Modeling's theorical and practical framework, which is applied to a case study in Fortaleza, Brazil.

summary In this paper we approach the concept of grey box model to understand the subjectivity and objectivity of urban design. From the beginning of the insertion of computational systems in the systems management, we understand that some simulations and the understanding of the city itself were partial: we do not understand the city and its spatial complexity and we have the pretension to do urban design thinking that we understand the urban life . Here we will address some categories of how we can simulate and create our urban systems using a more tactile cybernetics.

summary Location-based mobile applications have been a rising theme for academics in the field of urbanism and in urban and transportation, because of the potential of transformation they might bring to the urban landscape (De Souza e Silva, 2013). One of the possibilities we study here is to observe social encounters fostered by commuting rides. In this paper, we try to examine the practice from the broad perspective of estimating the environmental benefits, in a context where digital information technology is wielded to address problems old and new (Townsend, 2014). This paper aims to analyze the potential of transformations that new ICTs bring to urban mobility, using as case study the official ridesharing system of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the Carona? project. The system was developed focusing on the reduction of the number of motorized trips to the University, as well as the amount of CO2 generated by them. Here we analyze the dynamics of ridesharing, using the system data, and also try to observe the role it may play towards the promotion of integration in the UFRJ community.

summary For the built environment's transformation we are confronted with complex dynamics connected to economic, ecologic and demographic change (Czerkauer-Yamu et al., 2013; Yamu, 2014). In general, cities are complex systems being a "heterogeneous mosaic" of a variety of cultures and functions, characterised by diverging perceptions and interests (ibid). The juxtaposed perceptions and interests in relation to ongoing spatial processes of change create a particularly complex situation. Thus, for planning processes we are in need of approaches that are able to cope not only with the urban complexity but also allow for participatory processes to empower citizens. This paper presents the approach of using Digital Twins in virtual reality (VR) for civic engagement in urban planning, enriched with quantitative and qualitative empirical data as one promising approach to tackle not only the complexity of cities but also involve citizens in the planning process.

summary The paper will give an overview of our experiments in the past years in developing different interfaces and workflows for the use of low cost Head Mounted Displays (HMD) for Virtual Reality solution. We are mainly interested in using VR tools for designers in the early phases of their design. In our opinion VR tools can help to bring back a better understanding of space and scale which have been lost a little bit in the last century with the change from analogue to digital tools. After teaching architectural and urban design for many years we can clearly say that this effect is still ongoing and it is time that we develop digital tools that try to reverses thi effect. We will then concentrate within this paper on discussing some aspects of data reduction that are important to be able to use these tools in the design process. We are also showing how we use our interfaces presenting some results of student projects for a design in Hong Kong and the strategies and methods for using VR for a ongoing work on a project about the establishment of a so called "bicycle highway" in the city of Graz in Austria.
