summary Metal joints play a relevant role in space frame constructions, being responsible for large amount of the overall material and fabrication cost. Space frames which are constructed with standardized metal joints are constrained to repetitive structures and topologies. For customized space frames, the fabrication of individual metal joints still remains a challenge. Traditional fabrication methods such as sand casting are labour intensive, while direct 3D metal printing is too expensive and slow for the large volumes needed in architecture.This research investigates the use of Binder Jetting technology to 3D print sand molds for casting bespoke metal joints in architecture. Using this approach, a large number of custom metal joints can be fabricated economically in short time. By automating the generation of the joint geometry and the corresponding mold system, an efficient digital process chain from design to fabrication is established. Several design studies for cast metal joints are presented. The approach is successfully tested on the example of a full scale space frame structure incorporating almost two hundred custom aluminum joints.

summary Computational design and fabrication have reached an accomplished level of ubiquity and proficiency in the field of architecture, in both academia and practice. Materiality driving structure, responsiveness, and spatial organization can be seen to evolve, in kind, with the capabilities to fabricate deeper material hierarchies. Such maturity of a procedural material-driven approach spurs a need to shift from the dictations of how to explorations of why material efficiencies, bespoke aesthetics, and performativity are critical to a particular architecture, requiring an examination of linkages between approach, techniques, and process. The material system defines a branch of architectural research utilizing bespoke computational techniques to generate performative material capacities that are inextricably linked to both internal and external forces and energies. This paper examines such a self-referential view to define an expanded ecological approach that integrates new modes of design agency and shift the material system from closed-loop relationship with site to open-ended reciprocation with human behavior. The critical need for this capacity is shown in applications of novel textile hybrid material systems—as sensorially-responsive environments for children with the neurological autism spectrum disorder—in ongoing research titled Social Sensory Architectures. Through engaging fabrication across all material scales, manners of elastic responsivity are shown, through a series of feasibility studies, to exhibit a capacity for children to become design agents in exploring the beneficial interrelationship of sensorimotor agency and social behavior. The paper intends to contribute a theoretical approach by which novel structural capacities of a material system can support a larger ecology of social and behavioral agency.

summary The built environment is known to affect human health and wellbeing. Yet, architecture does not respond to our bodies or our minds. It tends to be static, ignoring the human occupant, their mood, behaviors, and emotions. There is evidence that this monotony of average space is harmful to human health. Additionally, differences in gender, race and cultural conditions vary the perception of and preferences for temperature and color. To improve the psychosomatic relationship with architectural spaces, there arises the necessity for it to have a greater range of spatial reactivity and better support for personalized thermoregulation and aesthetics. This paper proposes an architecture that operates like a mood-ring, one that creates rich feedback between architecture and occupant towards individualized reactivity and expression. [Sentient Concrete] ([Image 1]) is a prototype of a thermochromically treated concrete panel that is thermally actuated by embedded electromechanical systems and can dynamically produce localized thermally reactive responses. It serves as a test case for outlining further research agendas and possible design frameworks for psychosomatic architecture.

summary This paper presents data visualizations of an intelligent environment that were designed to serve the needs of two stakeholder groups: visitors wanting to understand how that environment operates, and developers interested in optimizing it. The visualizations presented here were designed for [Amatria], a sentient sculpture built by the Living Architecture Systems Group (LASG) at Indiana University Bloomington, IN, USA, in the spring of 2018. They are the result of an extended collaboration between LASG and the Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center (CNS) at Indiana University. We introduce [Amatria], review related work on the visualization of smart environments and sentient architectures, and explain how the Data Visualization Literacy Framework (DVL-FW) can be used to develop visualizations of intelligent interactive systems (IIS) for these two stakeholder groups.

summary Real estate price prediction is very complex process. Big data and machine learning technology have been introduced in many research areas, and they are also making such an attempt in the real estate market. Although real estate price forecasting studies is actively conducted, using support vector machine, machine learning algorithm, AHP method, and so on, validity and accuracy are still not reliable.In this research, we propose a Case-Based Reasoning system using regression analysis to allocate weight of attributes. This proposed system can support to predict the real estate price based on collecting public data and easily update the knowledge about real estate. Since the result shows error rate less than 30% through the experiment, this algorithm gives better performance than previous one. By this research, it is possible for help decision-makers to expect the real estate price of interested area.

title Lines, triangles, and nets: A framework for designing input technologies and interaction techniques for computer-aided design

summary This article serves to the larger quest for increasing our capacities as designers, researchers, and scholars in understanding and developing human-computer interaction in computer-aided design. The central question is on how to ground the related research work in input technologies and interaction techniques for computer-aided design applications, which primarily focus on technology and implementation, within the actual territories of computer-aided design processes. To discuss that, the article first reviews a collection of research studies and projects that present input technologies and interaction techniques developed as alternative or complimentary to the mouse as used in computer-aided design applications. Based on the mode of interaction, these studies and projects are traced in four categories: hand-mediated systems that involve gesture- and touch-based techniques, multimodal systems that combine various ways of interaction including speech-based techniques, experimental systems such as brain-computer interaction and emotive-based techniques, and explorations in virtual reality- and augmented reality-based systems. The article then critically examines the limitations of these alternative systems related to the ways they have been envisioned, designed, and situated in studies as well as of the two existing research bases in human-computer interaction in which these studies could potentially be grounded and improved. The substance of examination is what is conceptualized as “frameworks of thought”—on variables and interrelations as elements of consideration within these efforts. Building upon the existing frameworks of thought, the final part discusses an alternative as a vehicle for incorporating layers of the material cultures of computer-aided design in designing, analyzing, and evaluating computer-aided design-geared input technologies and interaction techniques. The alternative framework offers the potential to help generate richer questions, considerations, and avenues of investigation.

summary Sensory Urbanism is an experimental prototyping project exploring the potential of immersive Virtual Reality (VR) environments to support the incorporation of sensory and intangible aspects of place. The study investigates how sensory exploration of urban places can be integrated into decision making regarding the future of cities. In the past, numerous studies reported various sophisticated 'livability' measures, deeming to determine what makes a city a great place to live in. While a part of these measures can be quantified and be represented as text, graphs or images, most of the qualitative aspects of place are inherently abstract and sensory. These aspects have to be experienced to be understood and therefore they are extremely difficult to communicate using conventional representation means. The proposition explored in this study is that the increasing ubiquity of VR and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies can provide new opportunities to engage with the multi-sensory and temporal aspects of urban place. A mixed media approach was adopted, tapping into a temporal dimension as well as visual, aural and kinesthetic range of human senses. The paper reports on the development of the VR sensory urbanism prototype and the initial pilot study that demonstrated the proof-of-concept.

summary This proposal is about the design and prototyping of a Living Wall System (LIWAS) as a test bed for integrating concepts from biology into architectural design. The "Living Wall” is a new way of interpreting a wall system that we use in architecture and building. We try to integrate characteristics of living organisms into the wall design to harness some of the intriguing qualities of life into our built surroundings. Living Walls may include flows of water; they may move, adapt geometry and change appearance; they may be inhabited by algae, plants and other organisms and in general be “alive.” The framework of the proposal is the overlap between architectural design and biological research, using biomimicry as a methodology for information transfer between the fields (Image 1).

summary Recently, The South Korean national government and local governments in Korea are pursuing national R & D tasks that can be used in the design stage to expand the BIM technology to the public environment of the future city, such as the construction of the IT integrated architecture design environment and the convenient construction administrative system environment. Among these R & D researches, various studies are continuing to provide more convenient and accurate architectural services at the licensing stage in order to promote the introduction and practical use of BIM in the Korean construction industry. Typical examples are BIM-based building design quality evaluation and building performance review technology development. Therefore, the goal of this study is to introduce the case of developing the performance review interface according to the regulation and required performance criterion of BIM model using KBIMS and analyze the possibility of evaluating building design quality by applying this to a practical project.

summary Vertical farms and gardens are not new in dense urban environments, but few examples further explore the architectural potential and possibilities of the form to apply the same design approach to existing surfaces and walls of buildings. In addition, there is a design opportunity to exploit existing wall surfaces as 'analogue' media screens by using the vertical farm and garden as a medium of representation. In this paper we explore the opportunity for new design possibilities to achieve a hybrid architectural wall system as a reciprocal retrofit for existing building surfaces, integrating a vertical micro-farm and media screen. This architectural opportunity is explored through agile methods and the early design stages of a hybrid green media wall, PixelGreen. PixelGreen will be retrofitted to an existing wall of a high-rise building to convey mediated, graphical, artistic content and provide edible plant micro-farming simultaneously. The physical proof of concept is given through a modular mock-up with a programmed UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) serving as the 'agent' for constant updating of mediated content, maintenance and a regular farming cycle. The outcome of this approach provides preliminary insight into how to feasibly implement a hybrid green media wall with autonomous robotics and computation technology.
