summary Rural Vitalization being a nation-wide policy for China in the following five years, it is becoming even more important to preserve and conserve the village heritage, especially with the global background of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) involvement. This research reviews on the existing and potential methods which has been or could be used to better understand the rural built environment in the new data age, and proposes an interactive message platform named Rural Information Modelling (RIM) which could collect, storage, analyze and display the various message concerning the village heritage, especially the morphological, cognitive and behavioural information. With the help of RIM, stakeholders can better interact with the rural environment, and better negotiate with each other, leading to a more objective and rational construction process, which could express the willingness of both the outside architects, urban planners and visitors, and the in situ villagers and government.

summary In this project we used the concept of shape grammars as a tool for understanding the vernacular heritage in the Moorish village of Aljezur in the South of Portugal, and subsequently use it to guide the planning rehabilitation and growth of the village. First, we inferred a grammar for describing the existent vernacular heritage, and based on it developed two other grammars suitable for the rehabilitation of pre-existences and the construction of new houses involving features that can harmoniously mingle with the heritage surroundings. This paper supports the use of shape grammars for the development of heritage safeguard strategies in historical urban agglomerates.

summary This paper describes the color design process of the house in the village. The color design process proposed in this paper constitutes design stages such as color selection, color application, and color design analysis and evaluation. In the color selection step, a method of arranging colors using a color pallet or a color scheme is described. The color application stage includes the process of creating a village color design alternatives by specifying the color information of the hue, value, and saturation based on the BIM model. The color analysis stage is to numerically identify the color design attributes of the generated color design alternatives. The reason for color analysis and evaluation is to produce various design alternatives with the color harmony and improve the quality of the design.

summary This study focuses on (1) understanding the indigenous algorithm of specific material culture named Geringsing textile patterns, and then (2) transforming the indigenous algorithm into an application that best serves local artisans and younger generation as a design tool and educational tool. Patterns design, which is created in textile as a material culture from a specific area, has a unique design grammar. Geringsing textile is unique to this part of the world because it is produced with double-ikat weaving technique, and this technique is only used in three places in the world. This material culture passes from generation to generation as an oral tradition. To safeguard, document, and digitize this knowledge, a sequential research methodology of ethnography and computation is employed in this study to understand the indigenous algorithm of Geringsing textile patterns, and then to translate the algorithm with computer simulation. This culturally specific design application then is tested by two local artisans and two aspiring artists from the younger generations in the village to see whether this application can serve as a design and educational tool.

summary The project investigates the possibility of visualizing open source data in a 3D interactive virtual environment. We propose a new tool, 'ViBe'. We programmed 'ViBe' using Unity for its compatibility with HTC VIVE glasses for virtual reality (VR). ViBe offers an abstract visualization of open source data in a 3D interactive environment. The ViBe environment entails three main topics a) inhabitants, b) environmental factors, and c) land-use; acting as representatives of parameters for cities and urban design. Berlin serves as a case study. The data sets used are divided according to Berlin's twelve administrative districts. The user immerses into the virtual environment where they can choose, using the HTC Vive controllers, which district (or Berlin as a whole) they want information for and which topics they want to be visualized, and they can also teleport back and forth between the different districts. The goal of this project is to represent different urban parameters an abstract simulation where we correlate the corresponding data sets. By experiencing the city through visualized data, ViBe aims to provide the user with a clearer perspective onto the city and the relationship between its urban parameters. ViBe is designed for adults and kids, urban planners, politicians and real estate developers alike.

summary We have seen increasing expectations from our cities: as we aim to enable them to become smarter, more efficient and more sustainable. Having these goals makes the urban designing process increasingly complex. Undertaking contemporary urban design and analysis requires a rounded and inclusive approach. In the discussion relating to the smart city there has been attention to infrastructure technology solutions. But ways of estimating the success of more comprehensive urban design interventions is also extremely important. In response to these needs, digital urban design simulation and analysis software packages have been developed to help urban designers model and evaluate their designs before they take shape in the real world. We analyse, and reflect on the current aids available, classifying the urban design software packages which were used in the body of knowledge. In addition, more influential urban design software packages have been reviewed to figure out in which stages of the urban design process, they have applied. This review also helpful for software developer to understand which software packages more useful and which ones need to be developed in future.

summary The technological breakthrough on photovoltaic facades and the high potential for installing photovoltaic (PV) systems in the city of Salvador are the motivation for this article. This case study explores the feasibility of implementing solar energy technology on a building facade, proposing a design method for optimizing insolation performance by the form-finding process in a parameterized shape. The goal was to generate a parametric design workflow, in which it could be found some facade shapes, generating triangle and quadrilateral supporting grids, leading to better results in the total amount of radiation in comparison to the basic flat facade. In these supporting grids were evaluated also the fitting in the distribution of quadrilateral commercial PV cells, measuring its geometric compatibility. By the results, it could be verified the gains and losses in PV potential in several instances obtained by the form-finding process, as the potentials to consider this in the design of every building.

summary According to one of the Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2018), it is important for cities to be inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Therefore, it is necessary to value pedestrians and consequently active mobility, giving priority to the concepts of the Transportation Oriented Development (TOD) methodology. Although the Master Plan (BELO HORIZONTE, 2019) proposes that areas located in regional centralities are enhancing active mobility, can residents actually benefit from these resources at a walkable distance to access basic services? Thus, the aim of this research is to utilize digital technologies to visualize, analyze, and assess pedestrians' access conditions to commerce and basic services, identifying areas lacking infrastructure. The goal is for the model to serve as a reference for the development of public policies. To achieve this, metadata was used for parametric modeling to study walkability in the peripheral region of the city of Belo Horizonte.

summary This paper investigates through a review of the current literature on smart cities, reflecting different concepts across different political-social contexts, seeking to contribute to the establishment of a critical framework for smart cities development. The present work provides a review of the literature of 250 selected publications from four databases (Scielo, ScienceDirect, worldwide science, and Cumincad), covering the years from 2012 to 2018. Publications were categorised by the following steps: 3RC framework proposed by Kummitha and Crutzen (2017), the main political sectors of city planning, implementation strategies, computational techniques, and organisation rules. The information was analised graphically trying to identify tendencies along the time, and also, seeking to explore future possibilities for implementations in different political-social contexts. As a case of study, Australia and Brazil were compared using the proposed framework.

summary Sky view factor (SVF) is the ratio of radiation received by a planar surface from the sky to that received from the entire hemispheric radiating environment, in the past 20 years, it was more applied to urban-climatic areas such as urban air temperature analysis. With the urbanization and the development of cities, SVF has been paid more and more attention on as the important parameter in urban construction and city planning area because of increasing building coverage ratio to promote urban forms and help creating a more comfortable and sustainable urban residential building environment to citizens. Therefore, efficient, low cost, high precision, easy to operate, rapid building-wide SVF estimation method is necessary. In the field of image processing, semantic segmentation based on deep learning have attracted considerable research attention. This study presents a new method to estimate the SVF of residential environment by constructing a deep learning network for segmenting the sky areas from 360-degree camera images. As the result of this research, an easy-to-operate estimation system for SVF based on high efficiency sky label mask images database was developed.

summary This paper proposes a method of mesh simplification for 3D terrain or city models generated photogrammetrically from drone captured images, enabled by the ability of extracting the architectural features. Compare to traditional geometric computational method, the proposed method recognizes and processes the features from the architectural perspectives. In addition, the workflow also allows exporting the simplified models and geometric features to open platforms, e.g. OpenStreetMap, for practical usages in site analysis, city generation, and contributing to the open data communities.

summary In recent years, several advances have occurred concerning the legitimacy of precarious informal settlements in Brazil. In spite of this progress in the legal dimension, little has been made concerning standards to ensure urban space quality. The difficulties of reversing this exclusionary logic are due to several complex factors. A factor less discussed, especially in the national literature, but that has begun to draw the attention of scholars, is the invisibility of the informal city. This research assumes that it is necessary to regulate the urban form of precarious informal settlements, in order to prevent the deterioration of urban environmental quality. We highlight the importance to compile data about their urban form and their built environment, in order to contribute to a reality-based regulatory policy for these settlements, and this is the primary purpose of this study. To address this question, we propose a method of measuring the settlements' urban form, based on the City Information Modeling's theorical and practical framework, which is applied to a case study in Fortaleza, Brazil.

summary The article presents the assessment method for large (horizontally spread) urban investment and its visual impact on the cityscape using digital analyses. The visual impact assessment is often used in relation to facilities which dominate in the cityscape, mainly tall buildings. Various studies, however, examine the impact of wide but relatively low-rising buildings and their impact on the cityscape. The article presents a methodology for the assessment of the visual impact and a case study for a building facility comprising several tightly developed and medium height blocks of buildings in a city center of a significant historical value in Gdañsk, Poland. The research has been based on the Visual Impact Size method (VIS) and a city model consisting of a regular cloud of points (Digital Surface Model). The simulation has been developed using a dedicated C++ software (developed by author). The study aimed at assessing the following: a) to what degree such an urban investment can influence the cityscape; b) how the impact can be analyzed using digital techniques, and c) what input parameters of the analysis are crucial for satisfactory accuracy of its results.

summary The paper will give an overview of our experiments in the past years in developing different interfaces and workflows for the use of low cost Head Mounted Displays (HMD) for Virtual Reality solution. We are mainly interested in using VR tools for designers in the early phases of their design. In our opinion VR tools can help to bring back a better understanding of space and scale which have been lost a little bit in the last century with the change from analogue to digital tools. After teaching architectural and urban design for many years we can clearly say that this effect is still ongoing and it is time that we develop digital tools that try to reverses thi effect. We will then concentrate within this paper on discussing some aspects of data reduction that are important to be able to use these tools in the design process. We are also showing how we use our interfaces presenting some results of student projects for a design in Hong Kong and the strategies and methods for using VR for a ongoing work on a project about the establishment of a so called "bicycle highway" in the city of Graz in Austria.

summary Sensory Urbanism is an experimental prototyping project exploring the potential of immersive Virtual Reality (VR) environments to support the incorporation of sensory and intangible aspects of place. The study investigates how sensory exploration of urban places can be integrated into decision making regarding the future of cities. In the past, numerous studies reported various sophisticated 'livability' measures, deeming to determine what makes a city a great place to live in. While a part of these measures can be quantified and be represented as text, graphs or images, most of the qualitative aspects of place are inherently abstract and sensory. These aspects have to be experienced to be understood and therefore they are extremely difficult to communicate using conventional representation means. The proposition explored in this study is that the increasing ubiquity of VR and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies can provide new opportunities to engage with the multi-sensory and temporal aspects of urban place. A mixed media approach was adopted, tapping into a temporal dimension as well as visual, aural and kinesthetic range of human senses. The paper reports on the development of the VR sensory urbanism prototype and the initial pilot study that demonstrated the proof-of-concept.

summary The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect is pronounced in dense urban developments, and particular an issue in the case study city of Parramatta, where temperature increases are impacting use of public space, health, and economic productivity. To mitigate against elevated temperatures in built up areas, this research explores the optimisation of paving material layouts through using an evolutionary algorithm. High albedo (reflective) materials are objectively cooler than low albedo (absorbent) materials yet tend to be more expensive. To reduce the amount of heat absorbent pavement materials whilst keeping in mind material costs, a range of materials of different albedo levels (reflectivity) can be assigned on the same path using an evolutionary algorithm to optimise the coolest materials for the cheapest price. Over the course of this paper, this research aim will be approached using visual scripting software such as Grasshopper to simulate daylight analysis and to generate an optimisation algorithm. Previous research on the topics of UHI have revealed different methods for solving specific problems, all focusing on using software analysis to determine an informed decision on construction. The paper contributes via a computational approach of material selection to battle urban heat island effects.

summary This paper shows a new application of infrared photography technique in human behavior sensing situated in outdoor built environment. By building a system integrated behavior thermal-infrared images acquisition and processing, the characteristic of city pattern and human behavior related to that certain environment can be captured by the infrared camera equipped auto-control unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and be displayed in a processed visualization interface. By exploring a more efficient, smart and accurate method of collecting high spatial and temporal resolution data, a situated and context-aware behavioral visualization workflow can be developed which inform the behavior related environmental literacy in different culture of the architectsandurbandesignersinordertorevealhiddenpatternsinthecities.

summary The use of ICT-based participation tools in urban design has gained importance in the last decade. In order to enable the citizens and other stakeholders to participate in city-making processes, a wide range of ICT-enabled participatory tools, techniques, and applications have been developed.. Many studies have reported that the use of these participatory platforms has led to positive outcomes but the platforms' potentials and limits for facilitating different levels of design empowerment still remain unknown. In this context, this study aims to determine how these platforms empower citizens' engagement and identify the key factors that can facilitate better participation practices. This research analyses 25 ICT-based participation platforms by focusing on 4 key criteria:(1) their objectives, (2) the design action phases in which they are designated to be used, (3) their desired levels of design empowerment, and (4) offered functions. Our study reveals that more than three-fourth of analysed platforms still complemented by off-line participation activities. Empowering citizens to design independently is still a challenging task so just three platforms (12%) allow users to create their own plans and visions. Finally, we identify several influence factors for better ICT-based participatory design practices.

summary Climatic change coupled with desertification processes impacting cities located around the Mediterranean, has raised serious questions for the capability of the affected cities to adapt to the rapidly changing environmental conditions. This research aims to design small-scale tower structures and shading devices in Nicosia, Cyprus through employing environmental analyses within a generative design process to create an intelligent, adaptive system. Guided by Bernoulli's principles, geometrical design parameters acquired from fluid simulations, alongside solar analyses of the existing city fabric, were used to generate an evolutionary algorithm for design. The research develops a methodology to facilitate environmental flows in urban architectural systems, generating cooling processes in arid environments that facilitate the adaptation of cities to changes in climatic and environmental conditions.
