summary Research investigating water-driven passive actuation demonstrates the potential to transform how buildings interact with their environment while avoiding the complications of conventionally powered actuation. Previous experiments evidence the possibilities of bi-layer materials (Reichert, Menges, and Correa 2015; Correa et al. 2015) and mechanical assemblies with discretely connected actuating members (Gupta et al. 2019). By leveraging changes in weather to power actuated building components these projects explore the use of smart biomaterials and responsive building systems. Though promising the implementation of these technologies requires deep engagement into material synthesis and fabrication. This paper presents the design and prototyping of a rain responsive façade system using chitosan hygroscopic films as actuators counterbalanced by programmed compliant mechanisms. Building on previous work into chitosan film assemblies this research focuses on the development of compliant mechanisms as a means of controlling movement without over-complicated rotating parts.

summary Plants use highly reliable nastic movement through the oriented hygroscopic swelling of tissue to autonomously respond to external stimuli. Buildings, on the other hand, use highly unreliable kinematic mechanisms with multiple failure-prone components that are dependent on electromechanical input. Literature describing stimulus-responsive shape-changing actuators focuses primarily on single-stage reversible movements, and therefore provides limited insights into the methodologies needed to achieve directed multistage locomotion. Here we describe a methodology to develop a self-propelling and programmable robot (Hygrobot) capable of flexible locomotion with the cyclic introduction and removal of moisture. Several multi-layer mechanisms were programmed to actuate sequentially with changes in moisture, in a choreographed manner, to generate locomotion. We expect that this approach can advance interest into hygroscopic self-propelled mechanisms, as well as foster further research into the development of more complex kinematic mechanisms, requiring articulated and multi-stage actuation, for direct architectural or robotic implementation.

summary This article presents a discussion on digital design processes. More precisely about the use of Contour Crafting (CC) as a material and technique solution for the construction which will carry less impact for the environment. It explores the connection between parametric process and the file-to-factory concept analyzing the consequences of those strategies. The paper describes and analyzes a case study starting from the demand for a headquarters project for a university research group. It presents possibilities and discusses futures developments based on the methodology used in the process.

summary This paper discusses how history, archaeology, and architecture can work together within restoration and interpretation of older buildings in a multidisciplinary and technologic way - especially in territorial contexts of human rights violations. In the last decades, a lot of softwares, tools, and interfaces have emerged with the possibility to connect hypermedia languages, simulating spatial narratives of cultural heritage in virtual reality. This paper addresses these new methodologies of representation of history and memory through projects and case studies of the Human Rights Memorial of Minas Gerais.
