summary This article synthesizes the result of a systematization and analysis of videomapping carried out in “Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada” in the period 2014-2022, taking as a source the information collected in the investigation "(Lafluf, 2020), it is updated by integrating new experiences and new interpretations. Likewise, the article aims to provide a structured way to describe and analyze videomapping projects, keeping in mind three axes: context project, mapping project, and mapping event. These categories refer to a strategy developed within the methodological framework of the master's thesis "Videomapping en los proyectos del Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada de la Facultad de Arquitectura Diseno y Urbanismo (Udelar). Caso de estudio: Videomapping Patrimonio Anglo" (Lafluf, 2020) as well as in other investigations to describe the videomapping. Once this set of videomapping projects has been presented, general considerations are made to analyze the surveyed cases.

summary In a country with continental dimensions like Brazil, air transport plays a strategic role in the development of the country. In recent years, initiatives have been promoted to boost the development of air transport, among which the BIM BR strategy stands out, instituted by decree n-9.983 (2019), decree n-10.306 (2020) and more recently, the publication of the airport design manual (SAC, 2021). In this context, this work presents partial results of a doctoral research based on the Design Science Research (DSR) method for the application of Machine Learning (ML) techniques in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) subarea, aiming to support SAC airport project analysts in the phase of project evaluation. Based on a set of training and test data corresponding to airport projects, two ML algorithms were trained. Preliminary results indicate that the use of ML algorithms enables a new scenario to be explored by teams of airport design analysts in Brazil.

summary The use of StyleGAN algorithms proposes a novel approach in the investigation of architectural images. Even though graphical outcomes produced by StyleGAN algorithms are far from being architectural spaces, they might become a starting point in the creative process of architectural projects. By creating a database of specific categories of architectural images located in certain contexts, significant findings might emerge regarding their categorization in accordance to the style of a culture. This research analyzes the architectural images that result from implementing StyleGAN algorithms in a database of images of Chilean houses built between the years 2010 and 2020 and selected as finalist of the ´Project of the Year´ from international viewers and curators of the most viewed architectural website of the world. Our findings suggest that Chilean houses have two distinctive elements strongly influenced by human bias: the proportion of voids in the architectural-like generative volume and the integration of vegetation or landscape.

summary This paper analyzes eight assumptions that underly the general consensus in the computer-aided architectural design community that multi-objective optimization is more appropriate for and more analogous to architectural design processes than single-objective optimization. The paper discusses whether (a) architectural problems are best formulated as multi-objective optimization problems, (b) architectural design optimization is only about negotiating tradeoffs, (c) multiple objectives require multi-objective optimization, (d) Pareto fronts represent design spaces, (e) Pareto fronts require multi-objective optimization, (f) multi-objective algorithms are efficient and robust, (g) evolutionary operators make multi-objective algorithms efficient and robust and whether (h) computational cost is negligible. The paper presents practical examples of combining multiple objectives into one and concludes with recommendations for when to use single- and multi-objective optimization, respectively, and directions for future research.

summary Viscous Catenary is a free-form architectural glass structure that embeds material logic in a distributed system. Multi-curved panels are joined in a ‘catenary channel glass’ assembly, expressing the inherent behavior of the material at high temperatures. Float glass will typically achieve a level of viscosity at 1200°F (650°C), formed in a kiln by draping or “slumping. This hybrid fabrication process combines low-tech hardware and modern digital technologies. Glass panels were formed in a traditional kiln over a set of interchangeable waterjet-cut steel profiles or a repositionable tooling system. Parametric design in Grasshopper was essential to establish a discrete number of unique formwork elements and subdivide the overall geometry by panel size. In this case, each panel in the system was draped over four steel profiles. The formwork encourages a specific curvature in the glass, most precisely at the locations of folding. These moments of control allow the panels to align at their folds and join in an assembly by splice-lamination. Between the folds, the material remains free to shape itself, responding to its thickness, span, time, and temperature- into an undetermined “viscous catenary.” Selectively programming the geometry allows for a degree of material agency to remain in the system. This method differs from existing curved architectural glass, which would typically be pressed into a fully deterministic mold, leaving no opportunity for emergent morphologies. A pilot installation joined using transparent silicone adhesive achieved a height of 90cm with overlapping 30cm tall panels. Laser 3-d scanning between fabrication and assembly helped evaluate the fit between adjacent panels, identifying locations that required reinforcement. More research is needed to improve tolerances and overcome limitations in the adhesive before scaling up the fabrication system. Viscous Catenary succeeds in questioning the formal and structural potential of matter-driven curved architectural glass assemblies.

summary The article presents and discusses the experience of a workshop held online in 2020 as part of the DigitalFUTURES event. The proposal found its starting point in the register of a world in the midst of a pandemic crisis. The general objective of the workshop was the construction of a design thinking capable of acting on the domestic by means of a disobedience projected towards a possible future. In this framework, digital disobedience became an exercise in critically questioning certain ambiguities of digital interfaces in their everyday omnipresence. By adopting a decolonial sight on design through an epistemology from the South, it was possible to achieve at alternative figurations of futures. These figurations led to the design of a series of futuristic domestic devices capable of exploring disobedient scenarios of domestic dwelling.

summary This article presents a didactic experience carried out with the use of a BIM tool in the Thermal Environmental Comfort discipline of the graduate course in Architecture and Urbanism of a private Higher Education Institution in the city of Salvador-Bahia. Starting in 2020, students began designing solar protection devices using a geometric model in Revit. The method described in Annex I of the Technical Regulation on the Quality of Energy Efficiency Level in Residential Buildings (RTQ-R) was applied. The results obtained showed a better understanding by the students about the importance of correctly sizing solar protection devices for different orientations.

summary The article proposes to explore the concepts of storytelling (Lupton, 2020 and Xavier, 2015) and ubiquity (Santaella, 2013 and Santos, 2021) applied to the design of natural and invisible interfaces (Benyon, 2011). With Natural Interface it is possible to interact with devices directly, without needing the help of a mouse or keyboard. To do so, it presents as a case study the project “Criatura de Luz” (2015), by Estúdio Guto Requena, carried out to compose the new facade of the WZ Hotel (Sao Paulo). The purpose of this research is to understand the role of the designer in the creation of interfaces that are not only interactive, but that begin to propose immersive and ubiquitous narratives in design projects and the method for this analysis will be the case study from the design perspective as storytelling proposed by Lupton (2020). The aim is to do exploratory research to provide greater familiarity with the problem.

summary Print-Cast Concrete investigates concrete 3D printing utilizing robotically fabricated recyclable green sand molds for the fabrication of thin shell architecture. The presented process expedites the production of doubly curved concrete geometries by replacing traditional formwork casting or horizontal corbeling with spatial concrete arching by developing a three-dimensional extrusion path for deposition. Creating robust non-zero Gaussian curvature in concrete, this method increases fabrication speed for mass customized elements eliminating two-part mold casting by combining robotic 3D printing and extrusion casting. Through the casting component of this method, concrete 3D prints have greater resolution along the edge condition resulting in tighter assembly tolerances between multiple aggregated components. Print-Cast Concrete was developed to produce a full-scale architectural installation commissioned for Exhibit Columbus 2019. The concrete 3D printed compression shell spanned 12 meters in length, 5 meters in width, and 3 meters in height and consisted of 110 bespoke panels ranging in weight of 45 kg to 160 kg per panel. Geometrical constraints were determined by the bounding box of compressed sand mold blanks and tooling parameters of both CNC milling and concrete extrusion. Using this construction method, the project was able to be assembled and disassembled within the timeframe of the temporary outdoor exhibit, produce <1% of waste mortar material in fabrication, and utilize 60% less material to construct than cast-in-place construction. Using the sand mold to contain geometric edge conditions, the Print-Cast technique allows for precise aggregation tolerances. To increase the pavilions resistance to shear forces, interlocking nesting geometries are integrated into each edge condition of the panels with .785 radians of the undercut. Over extruding strategically during the printing process casts the undulating surface with accuracy. When nested together, the edge condition informs both the construction logic of the panel’s placement and orientation for the concrete panelized shell.

summary Laboratories based on the "Fab Lab" model have spread virtuously around the world in the past two decades. Over the years, some alternatives have emerged, establishing themselves in a more contextualized way. The article presents “other creative spaces”, involving case studies from three laboratories in South America: “Fábrica Diseno e Innovacion” (Argentina), “Fab Lab Livre SP” (Brazil), and “Exploratorio: taller público de experimentacion” (Colombia). In this way, it shows an analysis of the functioning of these laboratories in each condition, the practices emerging from these places related to the sociotechnical adequacy of digital fabrication technologies into their realities.

summary Hospitalization is, for the patient, a neuropsychophysiological stressor, thus pertinent theories point to architectural stimuli as a tool for the homeostasis restoration and consequent well-being. Furthermore, they compile advantages to the patients’ treatment and highlight, mainly, the natural environments benefits, which is elucidated by the Biophilia theory. Through literature review and analysis of applied research in national and international hospitals, extracted from indexing databases of scientific production in the 2000-2020 timeframe, it was found that these areas [a] promote stimuli that enhance emotions and positive feelings; [b] act to restore stress and anxiety; [c] reduce pain, analgesic intake and length of stay; and [d] increase patient satisfaction. By sharing the results of this research, the objective is, in addition to stimulating future research on the organism behavior in the environments, to indicate perspectives for hospital ambiences.

summary Faced with growing urbanization demands of developing countries and global shortages of construction materials, this research looks for an innovative light-weight high-performance material system for architectural applications. The knitted composites tower is a 7.2-meter, 260-kilogram and self-supported prototype that uses 2mm thick knitted fabric reinforced composites. The result is lightweight and strong. It demonstrates the design potentials of knitted fabric reinforced composites. This article takes knitted composites tower as an example to illustrate a design method for knitted fabric reinforced composites. The design method covers three aspects of structural form selection, structure arrangement, and microscopic configuration. At last, the complete fabrication and construction process will be discussed with a full-scale physical prototype.

summary From the distribution of the embedded energy in materials, can be operated in order to design and produce optimized material systems with minimum use of external energy to achieve its maximum three-dimensional capacity within their mechanical constraints. This research studies the process of 3D printing bidimensional layers over a tensioned fabric to generate three-dimensional shapes. After the tension of the fabric is released, the printed pattern generates tension and compression over the textile, which conduce and distribute the internal forces generating a controlled deformation with a final form. Digital simulation of finite anticlastic shapes and parametric design under mechanical constraints of the material used to predict and compare both physical and digital forms. These allow us to evaluate and optimize the printed pattern in order to decrease the amount of used energy and material to produce a performative shape.

summary This work is part of an ongoing research entitled “The 360- immersive: investigation, representation and digital immersion of Rio de Janeiro city during 19th and 20th centuries”, which aims at the theoretical, conceptual and instrumental analysis and discussion of the Panorama of Rio de Janeiro by Victor Meirelles and Henri Langerock in the Unity Game Engine. It presents an historical-interpretive method with application in Digital Graphics. To this end, it was considered necessary: to recreate the 360- immersive experience of the Panorama in real time; its context experience during the historical layers of 1885, 1915, 2020, and a fourth combination between previous layers, based in specific geometric models; programming in C# the movement of the player-observer, scenes, interaction with objects and the player's own navigation through the game menu.

summary This article presents preliminary results of a research under development at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul on BIM notebooks. It aims to study notebooks produced by Brazilian government agencies to identify characteristics and focuses of the content presented. In this step, notebooks from the states of Santa Catarina (2018), Paraná (2018) and the Federal District (2020) were mapped. Such notebooks were prepared from 2018 and define guidelines for contracting and elaborating public building projects developed based on the BIM methodology in order to satisfactorily meet the needs of the States within the scope of the Executive Branch in relation to public building projects developed in BIM . They are also used as annexes in public notices, for contracting projects, works and services developed in BIM.

title Transformation as a production of meaning of the kinetic typographic form

summary Digitality evidences the existence of writings that contradict the conception of static object. Many avatars of what is written become ephemeral and kinetic: more than objects, they are events. Kinetic writing appears in contemporary works from different disciplinary fields with analog or digital support. Time, expressed in duration, movement and transformation, returns to be the production substance of the sense of the written form — typographic or calligraphic — which is no longer spatial but temporal. The objective is to show how signs mutate to produce meaning from which the transformation, given by the kinetic dimension itself, occurs.

summary Are historiographic diagrams valid instruments for gauging the main constituent aspects of historiographic documentation of a body of architectural production? The paper aims to discuss the results obtained by algorithmic modeling and three-dimensional visualization of historiographic data. The analysis method proposes a diagrammatic approach to the research object, established from the fundamentals originally described by Zein (2020). The diagrams were created using the algorithmic modeling software Grasshopper, which allowed us to combine a precise recording of data with an original approach to its interpretation. From the data collected, Cartesian coordinates were established for the generation of curves and interpolation surfaces representative of the computed aspects of certain historiographic narratives. With wide application possibilities, the resulting algorithmic diagrams establish a new model for data analysis and visualization, which stands as a consistent alternative to other more commonly used digital bibliometric tools.

summary Social indicators are fundamental tools for measuring social facts, and their use has the potential to facilitate broad access to information. In 2020, the World experienced the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic, which impacted the socio-spatial reality of cities around the world in several aspects and deepened social inequalities. As part of a coping Covid-19 project by ArqPET, the Somar Platform, this paper presents a mapping process of the spread of Covid-19 in Fortaleza during the four months after its arrival. The mapping, which aims to inform public policies and provides documents that support the demand for adequate housing and sanitary infrastructure in the neglected spaces of the city, relates the spread of the virus to social indicators and uses database technology to optimize its productions.

summary From the view of concepts related to emotions and feelings treated in the field of cognitive - behavioral neuroscience and its relation with the teaching-learning processes, this paper searches to analyze educational strategies that can contribute to the field of emergency synchronous remote teaching architectural design. Methodologically, the bibliographical research of exploratory nature is related to an experience of investigation about pedagogical methods of teaching architectural design in a postgraduate course, developed, in the second semester of 2020, during the period of emergency synchronous remote teaching due to the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus.We seek to comprehend the benefits and limits of remote emergency teaching practices of architectural design, looking at factors such as emotions and feelings as important mediation tools on teaching-learning processes.
