summary In this paper, I present the commercial, urban-scale gunshot detection system ShotSpotter in contrast with a range of ecological sensing examples which monitor animal vocalizations. Gunshot detection sensors are used to alert law enforcement that a gunshot has occurred and to collect evidence. They are intertwined with processes of criminalization, in which the individual, rather than the collective, is targeted for punishment. Ecological sensors are used as a “passive” practice of information gathering which seeks to understand the health of a given ecosystem through monitoring population demographics, and to document the collective harms of anthropogenic change (Stowell and Sueur 2020). In both examples, the ability of sensing infrastructures to “join up and speed up” (Gabrys 2019, 1) is increasing with the use of machine learning to identify patterns and objects: a new form of expertise through which the differential agendas of these systems are implemented and made visible. I trace the differential agendas of these systems as they manifest through varied components: the spatial distribution of hardware in the existing urban environment and / or landscape; the software and other informational processes that organize and translate the data; the visualization of acoustical sensing data; the commercial factors surrounding the production of material components; and the apps, platforms, and other forms of media through which information is made available to different stakeholders. I take an interpretive and qualitative approach to the analysis of these systems as cultural artifacts (Winner 1980), to demonstrate how the political and social stakes of the technology are embedded throughout them.

summary With the advancement of additive manufacturing, computational approaches are gaining popularity in midsole design. We develop an experimental understanding of the midsole as a field and develop designs that are informed by running data. We streamline two data types, namely underfoot pressure and surface deformation, to generate designs. Unlike typical approaches in which certain types of lattices get distributed across the midsole according to average pressure data, we use ARAMIS data, reflecting the distinct surface deformation characteristics, as our primary design driver. We analyze both pressure and deformation data temporally, and temporal data patterns help us generate and explore a design space to search for optimal designs. First, we define multiple zones across the midsole space using ARAMIS data clustering. Then we develop ways to blend and distribute auxetic and isosurface lattices across the midsole. We hybridize these two structures and blend data-determined zones to enhance visual continuity while applying FEA simulations to ensure structural integrity. This multi-objective optimization approach helps enhance the midsole’s structural performance and visual coherence while introducing a novel approach to 3D-printed footwear design.

summary This article synthesizes the result of a systematization and analysis of videomapping carried out in “Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada” in the period 2014-2022, taking as a source the information collected in the investigation "(Lafluf, 2020), it is updated by integrating new experiences and new interpretations. Likewise, the article aims to provide a structured way to describe and analyze videomapping projects, keeping in mind three axes: context project, mapping project, and mapping event. These categories refer to a strategy developed within the methodological framework of the master's thesis "Videomapping en los proyectos del Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada de la Facultad de Arquitectura Diseno y Urbanismo (Udelar). Caso de estudio: Videomapping Patrimonio Anglo" (Lafluf, 2020) as well as in other investigations to describe the videomapping. Once this set of videomapping projects has been presented, general considerations are made to analyze the surveyed cases.

summary The paper documents the development of algor thms (released as Grasshopper plugin Chingree) to generate 2D compositions and 3D embodiments inspired from the visual ethos of Mondrian's neo-plastic compositions. Based on the empirical analysis of the compositions; rectangles are sub-divided with lines parallel to x and y axes, folllowed by selection of few of the sub-divisions for colouring. The principles of sub-division and selection are applied in 3D. Volumes are sub-divided with planes parallel to xy, yz and zx planes. Few of the sub- divisions are selected to be present (analogous to colouring in 2D). Shape gr mmar is used to control sub-division.

summary In continuation of our previous work on the design principles of traditional Beijing Siheyuan courtyard housing and their implementation into computational algorithms, this paper investigates the impact of the Fengshui theory on its layout. In particular, we will present the development of a Grasshopper algorithm able to examine Siheyuan houses' fortune status according to their layout. We have verified the algorithm by using Siheyuan precedence from the ancient Beijing map and measuring surveys on extant buildings. Our findings highlight that most Siheyuan houses were designed to be auspicious even though other forces were working against
