summary This paper strives to interrogate the abilities of machine vision techniques based on a family of deep neural networks, called generative adversarial neural networks (GANs), to devise alternative planning solutions. The basis for these processes is a large database of existing planning solutions. For the experimental setup of this paper, these plans were divided into two separate learning classes: Modern and Baroque. The proposed algorithmic technique leverages the large amount of structural and symbolic information that is inherent to the design of planning solutions throughout history to generate novel unseen plans. In this area of inquiry, aspects of culture such as creativity, agency, and authorship are discussed, as neural networks can conceive solutions currently alien to designers. These can range from alien morphologies to advanced programmatic solutions. This paper is primarily interested in interrogating the second existing but uncharted territory.

summary The nature of the architectural design process can be described along the lines of the following representational devices: the plan and the model. Plans can be considered one of the oldest methods to represent spatial and aesthetic information in an abstract, 2D space. However, to be used in the design process of 3D architectural solutions, these representations are inherently limited by the loss of rich information that occurs when compressing the three-dimensional world into a two-dimensional representation. During the first Digital Turn (Carpo 2013), the sheer amount and availability of models increased dramatically, as it became viable to create vast amounts of model variations to explore project alternatives among a much larger range of different physical and creative dimensions. 3D models show how the design object appears in real life, and can include a wider array of object information that is more easily understandable by nonexperts, as exemplified in techniques such as building information modeling and parametric modeling. Therefore, the ground condition of this paper considers that the inherent nature of architectural design and sensibility lies in the negotiation of 3D space coupled with the organization of voids and spatial components resulting in spatial sequences based on programmatic relationships, resulting in an assemblage (DeLanda 2016). These conditions constitute objects representing a material culture (the built environment) embedded in a symbolic and aesthetic culture (DeLanda 2016) that is created by the designer and captures their sensibilities.

summary The degree of geometric complexity a concrete element can assume is directly linked to our ability to fabricate its formwork. Additive manufacturing allows fabrication of freeform formwork and expands the design possibilities for concrete elements. In particular, fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing of thermoplastic is a useful method of formwork fabrication due to the lightweight properties of the resulting formwork and the accessibility of FDM 3D printing technology. The research in this area is in early stages of development, including several existing efforts examining the 3D printing of a single material for formwork— including two medium-scale projects using PLA and PVA. However, the performance of 3D printed formwork and its geometric complexity varies, depending on the material used for 3D printing the formwork. To expand the existing research, this paper reviews the opportunities and challenges of using 3D printed thermoplastic formwork for fabricating custom concrete elements using multiple thermoplastic materials. This research cross-references and investigates PLA, PVA, PETG, and the combination of PLA-PVA as formwork material, through the design and fabrication of nonstandard structural concrete columns. The formwork was produced using robotic pellet extrusion and filament-based 3D printing. A series of case studies showcase the increased geometric freedom achievable in formwork when 3D printing with multiple materials. They investigate the potential variations in fabrication methods and their print characteristics when using different 3D printing technologies and printing materials. Additionally, the research compares speed, cost, geometric freedom, and surface resolution.

summary The Saltatur (Dancer in Latin) demonstrates innovative research in the design and fabrication of a prefab structure consisting of spatial concrete nodes assembled in a compression-only configuration. The compression-only body is kept in equilibrium using the post-tensioning steel rods at the top and the bottom of the structure, supporting an ultra-thin glass structure on its top. A node-based assembly was considered as a method of construction. An innovative detailing was developed that allows locking each member in its exact location in the body, obviating the need for a particular assembly sequence. A bespoke steel connection transfers the tensile forces between the concrete members effectively. Achieving a high level of efficiency in utilizing concrete for spatial systems requires a robust and powerful structural design and fabrication approach that has been meticulously exhibited in this project. The structural form of the project was developed using a three-dimensional geometry-based structural design method known as 3D Graphic Statics with precise control over the magnitude of the lateral forces in the system. The entire concrete body of the structure is held in compression by the tension ties at the top and bottom of the structure with no horizontal reactions at the supports. This particular internal distribution of forces in the form of the compression-only body reduces the bending moment in the system and, therefore, the required mass to span such a distance.

summary “Casting on a dump” focuses on finding accessible, low-tech fabrication methodologies that allow for the construction of parametrically designed nonstandard modular cast panels. Such an approach adopts a computational design framework using a single low-tech and low-energy fabrication device to create nonrepetitive volumetric panels cast in situ. The design input for these panels is derived from design preferences and environmental control data. The technique expands upon easy to fabricate and cast methods, targeting less-developed logistical settings worldwide, and thus responding to imminent needs related to climate, available resources, and the economy.

summary Deep learning is expected to offer new opportunities and a new paradigm for the field of architecture. One such opportunity is teaching neural networks to visually understand architectural elements from the built environment. However, the availability of large training datasets is one of the biggest limitations of neural networks. Also, the vast majority of training data for visual recognition tasks is annotated by humans. In order to resolve this bottleneck, we present a concept of a hybrid system—using both building information modeling (BIM) and hyperrealistic (photorealistic) rendering—to synthesize datasets for training a neural network for building object recognition in photos. For generating our training dataset, BIMrAI, we used an existing BIM model and a corresponding photorealistically rendered model of the same building. We created methods for using renderings to train a deep learning model, trained a generative adversarial network (GAN) model using these methods, and tested the output model on real-world photos. For the specific case study presented in this paper, our results show that a neural network trained with synthetic data (i.e., photorealistic renderings and BIM-based semantic labels) can be used to identify building objects from photos without using photos in the training data. Future work can enhance the presented methods using available BIM models and renderings for more generalized mapping and description of photographed built environments.

summary The concrete industry is responsible for 8% of the global CO2 emissions. Therefore, using concrete in more complex and optimized shapes can have a significant benefit to the environment. Digital fabrication with concrete aims to overcome the geometric limitations of standardized formworks and thereby reduce the ecological footprint of the building industry. One of the most significant material economy potentials is in structural slabs because they represent 85% of the weight of multi-story concrete structures. To address this opportunity, Fast Complexity proposes an automated fabrication process for highly optimized slabs with ornamented soffits. The method combines reusable 3D-printed formwork (3DPF) and 3D concrete printing (3DCP). 3DPF uses binder-jetting, a process with submillimetre resolution. A polyester coating is applied to ensure reusability and smooth concrete surfaces otherwise not achievable with 3DCP alone. 3DPF is selectively used only where high-quality finishing is necessary, while all other surfaces are fabricated formwork-free with 3DCP. The 3DCP process was developed interdisciplinary at ETH Zürich and employs a two-component material system consisting of Portland cement mortar and calcium aluminate cement accelerator paste. This fabrication process provides a seamless transition from digital casting to 3DCP in a continuous automated process. Fast Complexity selectively uses two complementary additive manufacturing methods, optimizing the fabrication speed. In this regard, the prototype exhibits two different surface qualities, reflecting the specific resolutions of the two digital processes. 3DCP inherits the fine resolution of the 3DPF strictly for the smooth, visible surfaces of the soffit, for which aesthetics are essential. In contrast, the hidden parts of the slab use the coarse resolution specific to the 3DCP process, not requiring any formwork and implicitly achieving faster fabrication. In the context of an increased interest in construction additive manufacturing, Fast Complexity explicitly addresses the low resolution, lack of geometric freedom, and limited reinforcement options typical to layered extrusion 3DCP, as well as the limited customizability in concrete technology.

summary In digital design-to-fabrication workflows in architecture, in which digitally controlled machines perform complex fabrication tasks, all design decisions are typically made before production. In such processes, the formal definition of the final shape is explicitly inscribed into the design model by means of corresponding step-by-step machine instructions. The increasing use of augmented reality (AR) technologies for digital fabrication workflows, in which people are instructed to carry out complex fabrication tasks via AR interfaces, creates an opportunity to question and adjust the level of detail and the nature of such explicit formal definitions. People’s cognitive abilities could be leveraged to integrate explicit machine intelligence with implicit human knowledge and creativity, and thus to open up digital fabrication to intuitive and spontaneous design decisions during the building process. To address this question, this paper introduces open-ended Prototype-as-Artefact fabrication workflows that examine the possibilities of designing and creative choices while building in a human-robot collaborative setting. It describes the collaborative assembly of a complex timber structure with alternating building actions by two people and a collaborative robot, interfacing via a mobile device with object tracking and AR visualization functions. The spatial timber assembly being constructed follows a predefined grammar but is not planned at the beginning of the process; it is instead designed during fabrication. Prototype-as-Artefact thus serves as a case study to probe the potential of both intuitive and rational aspects of building and to create new collaborative work processes between humans and machines.

summary A radiatively cooled translucent building skin is developed for desert climates, constructed out of pockets of high heat-capacity liquids. The liquids are contained by a wavelength-selective membrane enclosure, which is transmissive in the infrared range of electromagnetic radiation but reflective in the shortwave range, and therefore prevents overheating from solar radiation and at the same time allows for passive cooling through exposure of its thermal mass to the desert sky. To assess the relationship between the form and performance of this envelope design, we develop a feedback loop between computational simulations, analytical models, and physical tests. We conduct a series of simulations and bench-scale experiments to determine the thermal behavior of the proposed skin and its cooling potential. Several materials are considered for their thermal storage capacity. Hydrogel cast into membrane enclosures is tested in real climate conditions. Slurry phase change materials (PCM) are also considered for their additional heat storage capacity. Challenges of membrane welding patterns and nonuniform expansion of the membrane due to the weight of the enclosed liquid are examined in both digital simulations and physical experiments. A workflow is proposed between the radiation analysis based on climate data, the formfinding simulations of the elastic membrane under the liquid weight, and the thermal storage capacity of the overall skin.

summary Architects have long sought to create spaces that can relate to or even induce specific emotional conditions in their users, such as states of relaxation or engagement. Dynamic or calming qualities were given to these spaces by controlling form, perspective, lighting, color, and materiality. The actual impact of these complex design decisions has been challenging to assess, from both quantitative and qualitative standpoints, because neural empathic responses, defined in this paper by feature indexes (FIs) and mind indexes (MIs), are highly subjective experiences. Recent advances in the fields of virtual procedural environments (VPEs) and virtual reality (VR), supported by powerful game engine (GE) technologies, provide computational designers with a new set of design instruments that, when combined with brain-computing interfacing (BCI) and eye-tracking (E-T) hardware, can be used to assess complex empathic reactions. As the COVID-19 health crisis showed, virtual social interaction becomes increasingly relevant, and the social catalytic potential of VPEs can open new design possibilities. The research presented in this paper introduces the cyber-physical design of such an affective computing system. It focuses on how relevant empathic data can be acquired in real time by exposing subjects within a dynamic VR-based VPE and assessing their emotional responses while controlling the actual generative parameters via a live feedback loop. A combination of VR, BCI, and E-T solutions integrated within a GE is proposed and discussed. By using a VPE inside a BCI system that can be accurately correlated with E-T, this paper proposes to identify potential morphological and lighting factors that either alone or combined can have an empathic effect expressed by the relevant responses of the MIs.

summary Print-Cast Concrete investigates concrete 3D printing utilizing robotically fabricated recyclable green sand molds for the fabrication of thin shell architecture. The presented process expedites the production of doubly curved concrete geometries by replacing traditional formwork casting or horizontal corbeling with spatial concrete arching by developing a three-dimensional extrusion path for deposition. Creating robust non-zero Gaussian curvature in concrete, this method increases fabrication speed for mass customized elements eliminating two-part mold casting by combining robotic 3D printing and extrusion casting. Through the casting component of this method, concrete 3D prints have greater resolution along the edge condition resulting in tighter assembly tolerances between multiple aggregated components. Print-Cast Concrete was developed to produce a full-scale architectural installation commissioned for Exhibit Columbus 2019. The concrete 3D printed compression shell spanned 12 meters in length, 5 meters in width, and 3 meters in height and consisted of 110 bespoke panels ranging in weight of 45 kg to 160 kg per panel. Geometrical constraints were determined by the bounding box of compressed sand mold blanks and tooling parameters of both CNC milling and concrete extrusion. Using this construction method, the project was able to be assembled and disassembled within the timeframe of the temporary outdoor exhibit, produce <1% of waste mortar material in fabrication, and utilize 60% less material to construct than cast-in-place construction. Using the sand mold to contain geometric edge conditions, the Print-Cast technique allows for precise aggregation tolerances. To increase the pavilions resistance to shear forces, interlocking nesting geometries are integrated into each edge condition of the panels with .785 radians of the undercut. Over extruding strategically during the printing process casts the undulating surface with accuracy. When nested together, the edge condition informs both the construction logic of the panel’s placement and orientation for the concrete panelized shell.

summary This project aims to continue the correlative study between two fundamental entities of digital architecture: the object and the field. Following periods of experimentations on the ""field"" (materialization of flows of data through animation), the ""field of objects"" (parametricism), the ""object"" (OOO), we investigate the last possible interaction remaining: the ""object-field,"" by merging the formal characteristics of the object with the structural flow of its internal field. This investigation is achieved by exploring the high-resolution features of 3d printing in the design of autonomous architectural objects expressing materiality through topological optimization. The objects are generated by an iterative process of volumetric reduction, resulting in an ensemble of monoliths. Four of them are selected and analyzed through topological optimization in order to extract their internal fields. Next, a series of high-resolution algorithmic systems translate the structural information into 3d printed materiality. Of the four object-fields, one materializes, close to identical, the result of the optimization, giving the keystone to understanding the others. The second one expresses the structural flow through a 1mm voxel system, informed by the optimization, having the effect of stiffening the structure where it is needed and thus generating a new topography on the object. The last two explore the blur that this high-resolution can paradoxically create, with complete integration of the optimal structure in a transparent monolith. This is achieved by a vertex displacement algorithm, and the dissolution of the formal data of the monolith and the structural flows, through the mereological assembly of simple linear elements. For each object-field, a series of drawings was developed using specific algorithmic procedures derived from the peculiarities of their complex geometry. The drawings aim to catalyze coherence throughout the project, where similarities, hitherto kept apart by the multiple materialities, begin to dialogue.

summary Following the proliferation of linear perspective during the Renaissance, the hegemony of the vantage point was often problematically used to signify the patron’s dominance. During the mannerist era, we witnessed the creation of elaborate rooms, painted in architectural linear perspective establishing the illusionary space of faraway lands - a measure of optic imperialism wherein the conquests of the west played out in the domestic decoration of the elite later provided to the public as a societal spectacle in the form of the panorama. Within these architectural illusions, or Quadratura as they were named in Italy, lies the most notable and justifiable critique of design by vantage point, the question ‘which vantage point is privileged?’ History not surprisingly reveals that the typical vantage point was most problematically centered at one and three-quarter meters above the ground – coincident with five centimeters below the average height of a human European male. The design of architectural form through view or spatial image has arguably perpetuated this act of optic bias. This project addresses this problematic practice of design by vantage point by utilizing motion sensors to liberate the virtual space of a canonic example of quadrature from its confines within a singular vantage point. The authors digitally modeled the projective space of Andrea Pozzo’s vision for the Church of Sant’Ignazio di Loyola in Rome, scaled and fit to a gallery space outfitted with a canvas to inform a ceiling plane. Anamorphic images of the virtual heavenly space, as seen through the canvas ceiling picture plane, were created from the digital model and encoded to the individual moments in the room. Individuals who moved through the gallery were followed by the illusion of the heavenly space, creating a live l’oeil distortion.

summary With a specific focus on robotic stereotomy, two full-scale vault structures were designed to explore the potential of self-standing building structures made from interlocking components; these structures were fabricated with a track-mounted industrial-scale robot (ABB 4600). To respond to the economic affordances of robotic subtractive cutting, all uniquely shaped structural modules came from one block of material (48"" x96"" x36""). Through the discretization of curvilinear tessellated vault surfaces into a limited number of uniquely shaped modules with embedded form-fitting connectors, the project exhibited the potential for programming a robot to cut ruled surfaces to produce freeform shells of any kind. Representing nearly zero-waste construction, the developed technology can potentially be used for self-supporting emergency shelters and field medical clinics, facilitating easy shipping and speedy assembly. Without using any scaffolding, a few people can erect and dismantle an entire mortar-free structure at the construction site. The disassembled structure occupies minimal space in storage, and the structure’s pieces can be transported to the site in stacks. Robot milling is a common technique for removing material to transform a block into a sculptural shape. Unlike milling techniques that produce significant waste, we used a hotwire that sliced through a Geofoam block to create almost no waste pieces. Since the front side of every module was concurrent with the backside of the next one, such a decision allowed to operate just one cut per front side of each module. In this case, by having three cuts, two neighboring modules were fabricated. The form of the structure and its modules emerged from the constraints of the fabrication technique, aiming to establish a feedback loop between geometry, material, simulation, and tool. By cross-referencing geometric data across Grasshopper, a customized tessellation script was made to breakdown a vault into its modular ruled surface constructs.

summary Form{less} focuses on the creation of complex thin-shell concrete forms using robotically thermoformed plastic molds. Typically, similar molds would be created using the vacuum forming process, producing direct replications of the pattern. Creating molds with this process is not only time- and material-intensive but also costly if customization is involved. Thin-shell concrete forms often require a labor-intensive process of manually finishing the open-face surface. The devised process of thermoforming two nested molds allows the concrete to be cast in between, with finished surfaces on both sides. Molds made with polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) allow the formwork to be reused and recycled. The research and fabrication work include the development of heating elements and the creation of the robotic process for forming the PETG. The PETG is manipulated via a robotic arm, with a custom magnetic end effector. The integration of robotics not only enables precision for manufacturing but also allows for replicability with unrestricted threedimensional deformation. The repeatable process allows for rapid prototyping and geometric customization. Design options are then simulated computationally using SuperMatterTools, enabling further design exploration of this process without the need for extensive physical prototyping. This research aims to develop a process that allows for the creation of complex geometries while reducing the amount of material waste used for concrete casting. The novelty of the process created by dynamically forming PETG allows for quick production of formwork that is both customizable and replicable. This method of creating double-sided building components is simulated at various scales of implementation.

summary This paper reviews and explores the topological properties of surface disclinations applied to elastic sheets and suggests how these properties may be reproduced at an architectural scale. A variety of surface disclinations and their translation from digital and physical formfinding processes to thin plywood prototypes are discussed. Initial phases of this research have been focused on the bending behavior of various sheet disclination types and have studied a variety of computational form-finding techniques that demonstrate this behavior in an architectural workflow. Several large-scale prototypes of architectural disclinations were produced to test the scalability of topologically induced surface curvature, discussed within the context of bending-active plate structures.

summary Algorithmic design (AD) uses algorithms to describe architectural designs, producing results that are visual by nature and greatly benefit from immersive visualization. Having this in mind, several approaches have been developed that allow architects to access and change their AD programs in virtual reality (VR). However, programming in VR introduces a new level of complexity that hinders creative exploration. Solutions based in visual programming offer limited parameter manipulation and do not scale well, particularly when used in a remote collaboration environment, while those based in textual programming struggle to find adequate interaction mechanisms to efficiently modify existing programs in VR. This research proposes to ease the programming task for architects who wish to develop and experiment with collaborative textual-based AD in VR, by bringing together the user-friendly features of visual programming and the flexibility and scalability of textual programming. We introduce an interface for the most common parametric changes that automatically generates the corresponding code in the AD program, and a hybrid programming solution that allows participants in an immersive collaborative design experience to combine textual programming with this new visual alternative for the parametric manipulation of the design. The proposed workflow aims to foster remote collaborative work in architecture studios, offering professionals of different backgrounds the opportunity to parametrically interact with textual-based AD projects while immersed in them.

summary This paper investigates an interactive and adaptive control system for kinetic architectural applications with a distributed sensing and actuation network to control modular fiber-reinforced composite components. The aim of the project was to control the actuation of a foldable lightweight structure to generate programmatic changes. A server parses input commands and geometric feedback from embedded sensors and online data to drive physical actuation and generate a digital twin for real-time monitoring. Physical components are origami-like folding plates of glass and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, developed in parallel research. Accelerometer data is analyzed to determine component geometry. A component controller drives actuators to maintain or move towards desired positions. Touch sensors embedded within the material allow direct control, and an online user interface provides high-level kinematic goals to the system. A hierarchical control system parses various inputs and determines actuation based on safety protocols and prioritization algorithms. Development includes hardware and software to enable modular expansion. This research demonstrates strategies for embedded networks in interactive kinematic structures and opens the door for deeper investigations such as artificial intelligence in control algorithms, material computation, as well as real-time modeling and simulation of structural systems.

summary Climate change continues to have noticeable and accelerated impacts on various territories. Previously predictable and recognizable patterns used by humans and nonhumans alike are perpetually being altered, turning localized signals into noise and effectively disrupting indigenous modes of life. While the use of certain technologies such as data collection, machine learning, and automation can render these otherwise patternless information streams into intelligible content, they are generally associated as being “territorializing,” as an increase in resolution generally lends itself to control, exploitation, and colonization. Contrarily, indigenous groups with long-lasting relationships that have evolved over time have distinct ways of reading and engaging with their contexts, developing sustainable practices that, while effective, are often overlooked as being compatible with contemporary tools. This paper examines how the use of traditionally territorializing technologies can be paired with indigenous knowledge and protocols in order to operate between signal and noise, rendering perverse changes in the landscape comprehensible while also presenting their applications as a facet for sociopolitical, cultural, and ecological adaptation. A methodology defined as “decoding” and “recoding” presents four distinct case studies in the Arctic, addressing various scales and targets with the aim of disrupting current trends in order to grant and/or retain autonomy through what can be read as a form of preservation via augmented adaptation.

summary This paper discusses novel methods for and advantages of integrating augmented reality (AR) and photogrammetry in hand clay-sculpting workflows. These techniques permit nontrained users to achieve higher precision during the sculpting process by holographically overlaying instructions from digital 3D source geometry on top of the sculpting material. By employing alternative notational systems in design implementation methods, the research positions itself in a postdigital context aimed at humanizing digital technologies. Throughout history, devices have been developed to increase production, such as Henry Dexter’s 1842 “Apparatus for Sculptors” for marble sculpting. Extrapolating from this, the workflow presented in this paper uses AR to overlay extracted information from 3D models directly onto the sculptor’s field of vision. This information can then become an AR-driven guidance system that assists the sculptor. Using the Microsoft HoloLens, holographic instructions are introduced in the production sequence, connecting the analog sculpture fabrication directly with a digital environment, thus augmenting the craftspeople’s agency. A series of AR-aided sculpting methods were developed and tested in a demonstrator case study project that created a small-scale clay copy of Henry Moore’s Sheep Piece (1971–1972). This paper demonstrates how user-friendly software and hardware tools have lowered the threshold for end users to develop new methods that straightforwardly facilitate and improve their crafts’ effectiveness and agency. This shows that the fusion of computational design technology and AR visualization technology can innovate a specific craft’s design and production workflow, opening the door for further application developments in more architecture-specific fabrication contexts.
