summary Driven by the statement: what if buildings could think, this work continues with another inquiry, what would happen if the building elements knew how to grow, regardless of the material they are made of, or if that building could respond throughout history to different challenges or structural needs. Therefore, this paper considers studying other structures evolved in time, such as trees and their predefined laws of growth. The construction elements could then be developed, responding to future scenarios, having the capacity to grow in volume, conserving their material properties, as a dynamic organism. This work presents a parametric approach, which, with the help of FEA, will stimulate the growth of the cross-section of a tree stem as if it were the cross-section of a building element.

summary Designing for extraterrestrial life is a very up-to-date issue. However, there are many constraints in this kind of designs. Designs that provide the best solution can only be obtained by identifying these constraints very well. In this study, a design concept was developed for life in Mars by considering various constraints. This design consists of a kinetic system with pneumatic structure. The preliminary scheme of this structure, which was planned to produce as a prototype, was discussed in the scope of this study.

summary In parametric design-oriented elective courses given in the architecture departments, most of the parametric designs generally remain at the modeling stage and cannot pass to the design application stage. In this study, this situation was determined as a research problem. Therefore, an experimental method within the scope of the parametric design course was considered. The applied method was discussed and the result product was evaluated. The applied method not only overcame the research problem, but also helped students to develop creativity and collaborative competency.

summary Forms in nature have been emerging in response to different requirements, in a complex and dynamic ecosystem. Architects and designers have usually used references from nature for their projects; in industrial design education, the use of nature’s referents allows to expand the morphological possibilities for product design and systems. In this paper, a methodological proposal for the abstraction and morphological transformation of nature’s patterns is presented, highlighting the advantages of parametric design and additive manufacturing technologies for morphological experimentation, in the context of the first application case of morphology research subject in the Industrial Design program at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana.

summary This article presents the parametric design and modeling in BIM of curved walls for 3d-printed construction in concrete, seeking to manage the reduction of materials and construction execution times, and enhance its architectural expression. The process described here is structured in the following phases: (i) conceptual preliminary design exploration, defining formal parameters in Revit, (ii) parametric modeling with Dynamo and Revit, (iii) integration of structural validation and printing programming of the robotic arm, and examples of execution with 3D-printed construction.

title Parametric modeling as a supporting tool for teaching in a technical drawing course

summary Despite the complexity of parametric modeling, used potentially to generate non-standard geometries, this paper presents a simple approach to adopt this tool as a support for teaching technical drawing contents. This experimental study was applied in a technical and high school education context, focusing on three subjects: 1) irregular polyhedra, 2) points in descriptive geometry, and 3) line in descriptive geometry. Exercises were implemented before and after the parametric experience with students, and the answers to both scenarios were compared. The results addressed to the efficiency of parametric modeling as a supporting tool in the teaching/learning process.

summary This paper is derived from a research through the creative practice, that aims at the conception of an artwork that reflects on the relationship between the human being, technology and nature. This is shown through the creation process of Lapsus Tropicus, an installation whose origin lies in the hypothesis of what would happen if a glitch -a computer error - began to transform a specific ecosystem. The research took into account the conceptual, formal and technical aspects of an artistic process that dialogues with references such as art, design, architecture, science fiction and key historical moments in the development of science.

summary A renewed interest in stereotomy, narrowly entwined with digital technologies, has allowed for the recovery and proposal of new techniques and expressions in this building approach. A new classification scheme for stereotomy research allows for the framing of various aspects related to this discipline, including a newly developed fabrication system specially tailored for the wedge-shaped voussoirs. This fabrication system is based in a reusable mould which may assume an infinite number of geometries, avoiding the wasteful discarding of material found in subtractive strategies. The usage of a mould also allows for more sustainable materials to be employed, catering to current challenges. The strategies subject for demonstration in this project rely on various bottom-up approaches, which involve particle physic simulations such as a hanging model to compute an optimal stereo-funicular shape, or spring mechanisms to find optimal coplanar solutions. The proposed mechanisms work in a parametric algorithmically environment, able to handle dozens of uniquely different voussoirs at the same time. Together with the automatic translation to fabrication data, the proposed shape complexity would hardly be built with classic tools. The Tamandua Vault project has the purpose of exemplifying the possibilities of an updated stereotomy, while its design demonstrates current strategies that may be employed in the resolution of complex geometrical problems and bespoke fabrication of construction components for stereotomy.

summary This paper addresses the development of parametric components based on BIM (Building Information Modeling) tools and their application for the teaching of architecture and urban designs, in a discipline focused on housing typology. As a didactic and research method, the use of industrialized building technologies in steel and precast concrete for production efficiency and low maintenance is associated with the idea of the studio as a laboratory for verification and experimentation. The system was improved for two years, and provided students with greater constructive control, basic feedback on the budget, and mastery of representation, while they investigated alternative design concepts and new components.

summary School buildings are currently one of the largest portions of planning and building projects in Germany. In order to reflect the continuous developments in school building construction with constantly changing spatial requirements, an approach to analyse, derive and combine patterns of schools is proposed to adapt school typologies accordingly. Therefore, the topology is analysed, concerning interconnection methods, such as adjacency, accessibility, depth, and flow. The geometric analysis of e.g. room sizes or spatial proportions is enhanced by including grouping of rooms, estimated room clusters, or room shapes. Furthermore, text-matching is used to determine e.g. room program fulfilment, or assigning functional room descriptions to predefined room types, revealing huge differences of terms throughout time and architects. First results of the analyses show a relevant correlation between spatial proportion and room types.

summary Following the proliferation of linear perspective during the Renaissance, the hegemony of the vantage point was often problematically used to signify the patron’s dominance. During the mannerist era, we witnessed the creation of elaborate rooms, painted in architectural linear perspective establishing the illusionary space of faraway lands - a measure of optic imperialism wherein the conquests of the west played out in the domestic decoration of the elite later provided to the public as a societal spectacle in the form of the panorama. Within these architectural illusions, or Quadratura as they were named in Italy, lies the most notable and justifiable critique of design by vantage point, the question ‘which vantage point is privileged?’ History not surprisingly reveals that the typical vantage point was most problematically centered at one and three-quarter meters above the ground – coincident with five centimeters below the average height of a human European male. The design of architectural form through view or spatial image has arguably perpetuated this act of optic bias. This project addresses this problematic practice of design by vantage point by utilizing motion sensors to liberate the virtual space of a canonic example of quadrature from its confines within a singular vantage point. The authors digitally modeled the projective space of Andrea Pozzo’s vision for the Church of Sant’Ignazio di Loyola in Rome, scaled and fit to a gallery space outfitted with a canvas to inform a ceiling plane. Anamorphic images of the virtual heavenly space, as seen through the canvas ceiling picture plane, were created from the digital model and encoded to the individual moments in the room. Individuals who moved through the gallery were followed by the illusion of the heavenly space, creating a live l’oeil distortion.

summary The separation between architectural design teaching and structural education corroborates the division of labor in professional practice that cannot support the development of dialectical relations between architects and engineers. Thus, the proposal of hybridization between architectural design teaching and structural education developed in this article presupposes a shift from the centrality given to the plastic and spatial principles of the architectural form to the development of approaches that are oriented towards the recognition of the material and constructive questions which aided by the parametric and structural behavior simulation tools allow the development of complex relationships based on tectonic procedural logic.

summary This article describes an analysis of the morphological changes between 2005 and 2020 in the Vila Cabral neighborhood, located on the outskirts of the Brazilian city of Campina Grande. The research was developed in two different analytical scenarios, adopting the algorithmic- parametric computational implementation as a methodology, and applying the following procedures: (i) formal decomposition of a sample of the urban fabric; (ii) visibility graph analysis (VGA); (iii) analysis of the diversity of uses and (iv) analysis of urban density (populational and built). The study demonstrated that the association of different urban analysis tools strengthens decision-making in the context of evidence-based urban design.

summary Algorithmic design (AD) uses algorithms to describe architectural designs, producing results that are visual by nature and greatly benefit from immersive visualization. Having this in mind, several approaches have been developed that allow architects to access and change their AD programs in virtual reality (VR). However, programming in VR introduces a new level of complexity that hinders creative exploration. Solutions based in visual programming offer limited parameter manipulation and do not scale well, particularly when used in a remote collaboration environment, while those based in textual programming struggle to find adequate interaction mechanisms to efficiently modify existing programs in VR. This research proposes to ease the programming task for architects who wish to develop and experiment with collaborative textual-based AD in VR, by bringing together the user-friendly features of visual programming and the flexibility and scalability of textual programming. We introduce an interface for the most common parametric changes that automatically generates the corresponding code in the AD program, and a hybrid programming solution that allows participants in an immersive collaborative design experience to combine textual programming with this new visual alternative for the parametric manipulation of the design. The proposed workflow aims to foster remote collaborative work in architecture studios, offering professionals of different backgrounds the opportunity to parametrically interact with textual-based AD projects while immersed in them.

summary In architectural design, evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithms (EMOA) have found use in numerous practical applications in which qualitative and quantitative aspects can be transformed into fitness functions to be optimized. This paper shows that they can be used in an architectural plan design process that starts from a more traditional approach. The benchmark case uses a novel construction system, called Ac.Ca. Building, with a vast architectural and technological database, arleady validated, to generate architectural plan for a residential towerbuilding with a parametric approach and EMOA. The proposed framework differs from past research because uses spatial units with high level of architectural and tecnological definition.

summary This paper presents the bioinformed design of tensegrities based in the application of configurative logics of biotensegrities. Its purpose is to accomplish dynamic tensegrities, potentially applicable in the design of innovative technological devices. This article presents the analysis and design of three types of models: a) the Universal Tensegrity Joints introduced by Fuller, b) the Abstract Dynamic Units, and c) Bioinformed Dynamic Units. The methodology is based on simulating movements with parametric modeling in Rhinoceros software, with the usage of Grasshopper and Kangaroo plugins. Thus, a first classification of UDAs and the first phase of UDB models for leg and shoulder were obtained.

summary Due to constant technological developments, society’s priorities and cultural perspectives have changed, requiring a redefinition of experiences in education. In the field of architecture teaching, the transition from CAD (Computer-Aided Design) to the design systems in other digital media, such as the parametric design, can be observed. This article aims to demonstrate two analog-digital experiences in an architecture school. The methodology consisted of dividing the activities into three stages: analog, logical, and digital. The results are described through quantitative and qualitative data acquired in the experiences. The data allowed toreflect on the strategies adopted, lessons learned, and futures challenges.

title The Evolution of CAADRIA Conferences - A Bibliometric Approach

summary This paper presents an analysis of the output, impact, use and content of 1,860 papers that were published in the CAADRIA conference proceedings over the last 20+ years (from 1996 to 2019). The applied methodology is a blend of bibliometrics, webometrics and clustering with text mining. The bibliometric analysis leads to quantitative and qualitative results on three levels: (1) author, (2) article and (3) association. The most productive authors authored over 50 papers, and the top 20% authors have over 80 % of all citations generated by CAADRIA proceedings. The overall impact of CAADRIA may be characterised by nearly 2,000 known citations and by the h-index that is 17. The webometrics based on CumInCAD.org reveals that the CAADRIA papers served over 200 k users, which is a considerable visibility for scientific CAAD output. The keywords most frequently used by authors were digital fabrication, BIM and parametric, generative, computational design. Notably, 90% of the papers' descriptors are 2-grams. This study may be useful to researchers, educators and publishers interested in CAAD.
