summary This paper provides an overview of "Architasker", a large-scale crowdsourcing approach, platform, and method that enables a collaborative professional architectural design process in collaboration with a community of stakeholders. The platform includes communicating complex architectural project requirements; solution space exploration using different micro-tasks like sketching, 2D and 3D CAD; design selection; and design review as an evolutionary process. The architectural crowdsourcing model underlying the platform is contextualized in the state-of-the-art research on creative crowdsourcing methods and is supported by relevant evidence from empirical experiments. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the method to generate architectural artifacts by harnessing the skills, talents, and experience of architects and the opinions and values of the stakeholders.

summary This paper explores and reflects on an integrative computational design thinking approach, which requires the melding of computation, design and theory as a conceptual framework, to be implemented in architectural education. Until now, digital design education is typically based on the introduction of digital tools and plugins at university courses and the subsequent application of these tools to design tasks of limited architectural complexity. At this time, technological advancement has not been matched by a comparable advancement in computational design thinking. The paper describes in detail a novel conceptual framework for course setup that illustrates the using of computational design as a manner of thinking in patterns of interaction across various scales, reaching from building design to regional planning. This approach was subsequently tested in a series of master-level studios, the results of which will be presented as case studies in this paper.

summary Extrusion based three-dimensional additive manufacturing technology forms objects by driving the material through a nozzle depositing a linear structure through vector-building blocks called roads. In a common 3-axis system, the roads are stacked layer upon layer for forming the final object. However, forming overhanging geometry in this way requires additional support structures increasing material usage and effective printing time. The paper presents a novel Horizontal forming (HF) approach and method for forming overhanging geometry, HF is a new extrusion-based AM approach that allows rapid and stable forming of horizontal structures without additional support in 3-axis systems. This approach can provide new design and manufacturing possibilities for extrusion AM, with emphasis on medium and large-scale AM. HF can affect the outcome's aesthetic and mechanical properties. Moreover, it can significantly accelerate the production process and reduce material waste. The present paper maps the influence of various parameters employed in the HF method, providing a deeper understanding of the printing process. Additionally, it explores and demonstrates the potential functional and aesthetic characteristics that can be achieved with HF for industrial design and architectural products.

summary This paper outlines a framework for building cognition that emphasises the role of architectural movement.The framework is relevant for a new type of building that is digitally augmented and autonomous, and that relates to occupants in novel ways. Based on an embodied view of cognition, the framework might serve a complementary approach to integrating building cognition in the overall building design. The significance of architectural movement in this context is unpacked and evaluated in this paper using the Villa Girasole, a historic work of kinetic architecture near Verona in Italy. The villa serves as a filter to investigate movement through three key concepts of the framework: acting out, coupling, and exteriorisation. The paper proposes that architectural movement might enable an interdependency between building, occupant, and environment that is critical for establishing a form of highly specific building cognition.

title Resilient by design: Informing pandemic-safe building redesign with computational models of resident congestion

summary This paper describes a computational design-support tool created in response to safe-distancing measures enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The tool was developed for a specific use case: understanding congestion in crowded migrant worker dormitories that experienced high rates of COVID-19 transmission in 2020. Building from agent-based and network-based computational simulations, the tool presents a hybrid method for simulating building resident movements based on known or pre-determined schedules and likely itineraries. This hybrid method affords the design tool a novel approach to simultaneous exploration of spatial and temporal design scenarios. The paper demonstrates the use of the tool on an anonymised case study of a high-density migrant worker dormitory, comparing results from a baseline configuration against design variations that modify dormitory physical configuration and schedule. Comparisons between the design scenarios provide evidence for reflections on pandemic-resilient design and operation strategies for dor- mitories. A conclusions section considers the extent to which the model and case study results are applicable to other dense institutional buildings and describes the paper’s contributions to general understanding of configurational and operational aspects of resilience in the built environment.

summary Changes in the media through which design proceeds are often associated with the emergence of novel design practices and new subjectivities. While the dynamic between design tools and design practices is complex and nondeterministic, there are moments when rapid development in one of these areas catalyzes changes in the other. The nascent integration of machine learning (ML) processes into computer-aided design suggests that we are in just such a moment. It is in this context that an undergraduate research studio was conducted at UC Berkeley in the spring of 2020. By introducing novice students to a set of experimental tools (Steinfeld 2020) and processes based on ML techniques, this studio seeks to uncover those original practices or new subjectivities that might thereby arise. We describe here a series of small design projects that examine the applicability of such tools to early-stage architectural design. Specifically, we document the integration of several conditional text-generation models and conditional image-generation models into undergraduate architectural design pedagogy, and evaluate their use as “creative provocateurs” at the start of a design. After surveying the resulting student work and documenting the studio experience, we conclude that the approach taken here suggests promising new modalities of design authorship, and we offer reflections that may serve as a useful guide for the more widespread adoption of machine-augmented design tools in architectural practice.

summary This paper focuses on developing a novel geo-computational methodology for automating the generation of design options for district planning. The knowledge contribution focuses on the ability of the planners and designers to interact with and override the automated process. This approach is referred to as "agile automated modelling". The approach is demonstrated through a case study in which three adjacent districts are generated with a total area of approximately 1300 hectares. An automated modelling process is implemented based on a set of core planning principles established by the planners. The automated process generates street networks, land parcels, and 3-dimensional urban models. The process is broken down into three steps and users are then able to intervene at the end of every step to override and modify the outputs. This aims to help planners and designers to iteratively generate and assess various planning outcomes.

title Solidarity through difference: Speculative participatory serious urban gaming (SPS-UG)

summary This article discusses the methodology and results of the Maslow’s Palace workshops project, which engages with current debates surrounding the democratisation of digital urban design technology and stakeholder decision making, through the implementation of a speculative oriented approach to serious gaming. The research explores how serious games might be used to help marginalised communities consider past, future and present community experiences, reconcile dissimilar assumptions, generate social capital building and design responses and prime participants for further long-term design engagement processes through a new approach called Speculative Participatory Serious Urban Gaming. Empirical material for this research was gathered from a range of case study workshops prepared with three landfill-based communities and external partners throughout 2017. Results show the approach helped participants develop shared norms, values and collective understandings of sensitive topics and develop ideas for future action through ‘collective tinkering.

summary This paper presents an active analysis and research approach for design workshops at the Faculty of Architecture at UMNSH. The proposed scheme for final year design studio demands students to participate in the confrontation of reality to understand first-hand through databases; the complex problems of contemporary society and its relationship with the habitat. In order to understand the diverse emergent phenomena of the city, a collaborative work is implemented for the development of a database, occupation maps and territorial dynamics on a micro scale. From the evidence supported by data, students articulate design strategies and specific territorial actions.

summary Algorithmic design (AD) uses algorithms to describe architectural designs, producing results that are visual by nature and greatly benefit from immersive visualization. Having this in mind, several approaches have been developed that allow architects to access and change their AD programs in virtual reality (VR). However, programming in VR introduces a new level of complexity that hinders creative exploration. Solutions based in visual programming offer limited parameter manipulation and do not scale well, particularly when used in a remote collaboration environment, while those based in textual programming struggle to find adequate interaction mechanisms to efficiently modify existing programs in VR. This research proposes to ease the programming task for architects who wish to develop and experiment with collaborative textual-based AD in VR, by bringing together the user-friendly features of visual programming and the flexibility and scalability of textual programming. We introduce an interface for the most common parametric changes that automatically generates the corresponding code in the AD program, and a hybrid programming solution that allows participants in an immersive collaborative design experience to combine textual programming with this new visual alternative for the parametric manipulation of the design. The proposed workflow aims to foster remote collaborative work in architecture studios, offering professionals of different backgrounds the opportunity to parametrically interact with textual-based AD projects while immersed in them.

summary In architectural design, evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithms (EMOA) have found use in numerous practical applications in which qualitative and quantitative aspects can be transformed into fitness functions to be optimized. This paper shows that they can be used in an architectural plan design process that starts from a more traditional approach. The benchmark case uses a novel construction system, called Ac.Ca. Building, with a vast architectural and technological database, arleady validated, to generate architectural plan for a residential towerbuilding with a parametric approach and EMOA. The proposed framework differs from past research because uses spatial units with high level of architectural and tecnological definition.

summary As a form of visual reasoning, sketching is a human cognitive activity instrumental to architectural design. In the process of sketching, abstract sketches invoke new mental imageries and subsequently lead to new sketches. This iterative transformation is repeated until the final design emerges. Artificial Intelligence and Deep Neural Networks have been developed to imitate human cognitive processes. Amongst these networks, the Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (cGAN) has been developed for image-to-image translation and is able to generate realistic images from abstract sketches. To mimic the cyclic process of abstracting and imaging in architectural concept design, a Cyclic-cGAN that consists of two cGANs is proposed in this paper. The first cGAN transforms sketches to images, while the second from images to sketches. The training of the Cyclic-cGAN is presented and its performance illustrated by using two sketches from well-known architects, and two from architecture students. The results show that the proposed Cyclic-cGAN can emulate architects' mode of visual reasoning through sketching. This novel approach of utilising deep neural networks may open the door for further development of Artificial Intelligence in assisting architects in conceptual design.

summary This paper describes an approach of recognizing floor plans by assorting essential objects of the plan using deep-learning based style transfer algorithms. Previously, the recognition of floor plans in the design and remodeling phase was labor-intensive, requiring expert-dependent and manual interpretation. For a computer to take in the imaged architectural plan information, the symbols in the plan must be understood. However, the computer has difficulty in extracting information directly from the preexisting plans due to the different conditions of the plans. The goal is to change the preexisting plans to an integrated format to improve the readability by transferring their style into a comprehensible way using Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGAN). About 100-floor plans were used for the dataset which was previously constructed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport of Korea. The proposed approach has such two steps: (1) to define the important objects contained in the floor plan which needs to be extracted and (2) to use the defined objects as training input data for the cGAN style transfer model. In this paper, wall, door, and window objects were selected as the target for extraction. The preexisting floor plans would be segmented into each part, altered into a consistent format which would then contribute to automatically extracting information for further utilization.

summary Globally, the built environment is inequitable. And while construction automation is often heralded as the solution to labor shortages and the housing crisis, such methods tend to focus on technology, neglecting the wider socioeconomic contexts. Automated Architecture (AUAR), a spinoff of AUAR Labs at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, asserts that a values-centered, decentralized approach to automation centered around local communities can begin to address this material hegemony. The paper introduces and discusses AUAR’s platform-based framework, Discrete Automation, which subverts the status quo of automation that excludes those who are already disadvantaged into an inclusive network capable of providing solutions to both the automation gap and the assembly problem. Through both the wider context of existing modular housing platforms and issues of the current use of automated technologies in architectural production, Discrete Automation is discussed through the example of Block Type A, a discrete timber building system, which in conjunction with its combinatorial app constitutes the base of a community-led housing platform developed by AUAR. Built case studies are introduced alongside a discussion of the applied methodologies and an outlook on the platform’s potential for scalability in an equitable, sustainable manner.

summary Non-structural or out-of-grade timber framing material contains a large proportion of visual and natural defects. A common strategy to recover usable material from these timbers is the marking and removing of defects, with the generated intermediate lengths of clear wood then joined into a single piece of fulllength structural timber. This paper presents a novel workflow that uses machine learning based image recognition and a computational decision-making algorithm to enhance the automation and efficiency of current defect identification and rejoining processes. The proposed workflow allows the knowledge of worker to be translated into a classifier that automatically recognizes and removes areas of defects based on image capture. In addition, a real-time optimization algorithm in decision making is developed to assign a joining sequence of fragmented timber from a dynamic inventory, creating a single piece of targeted length with a significant reduction in material waste. In addition to an industrial application, this workflow also allows for future inventory-constrained customizable fabrication, for example in production of non-standard architectural components or adaptive reuse or defect-avoidance in out-of-grade timber construction.

summary Parametric modeling systems are widely used in architectural design. Their use for designing complex built environments raises important practical challenges when composed by multiple people with diverse interests and using mostly unverified computational modules. Through a case study, we investigate possible concerns identifiable from a real-world collaborative design setting and how such concerns can be revealed through interactive data visualizations of parametric models. We then present our approach for resolving these concerns using a design analytic workflow for examine their reliability and validity. We summarize the lessons learnt from the case study, such as the importance of an abundance of test cases, reproducible design instances, accessing and interacting with data during all phases of design, and seeking high cohesion and decoupling between design geometry and evaluation components. We suggest a systematic integration of design modeling and analytics for enhancing a reliable design decision-making.

summary There is a persistent need among Hong Kong Architecture students to develop greater aptitude for critical and design thinking. The mechanics of criticality entail observation, reflection and the development of a knowledgeable response. This important process aligns with a tool-based iterative design research approach, where a cycle of action, observation, reflection, and reaction can take place. In order to complement fundamentals in architectural design, a focus on tools and tool-making approaches toward the development of a critical architectural proposal needs to be incorporated into core curriculum. Through the integration of robotics, automation and computational design approaches into the design studio environment, tool making for producing architectural media (drawings and models) can most effectively be explored. With an emphasis on design and programming tools for component fabrication and assembly, students can develop their own criterion for evaluation as a knowledge-based response to their investigations and proposed architectural systems.

summary The paper presents design-integrated methods for high-resolution specification and prediction of functionally graded wood-based thermal responsive composites, using machine learning. The objective is the development of new circular design workflow, employing robotic fabrication, in order to predict fabrication files linked to material performance and design requirements, focused on application for intrinsic responsive and adaptive architectural surfaces. Through an experimental case study, the paper explores how machine learning can form a predictive design framework where low-resolution data can solve material systems at high resolution. The experimental computational and prototyping studies show that the presented image-based machine learning method can be adopted and adapted across various stages and scales of architectural design and fabrication. This in turn allows for a design-per-requirement approach that optimizes material distribution and promotes material economy.

summary This project presents a Realtime Architecture Platform applied in a telepresence design studio to design and construct the CollabWood prototype. The platform, developed by the authors, enables an open workflow to collaborate and design in unity. It provides a persistent online environment for real-time architectural production. The work method is based on the concept of collaborative objects and distributed designers. These collaborative objects are the shared content: discrete parts, prefabs, or blocks that enable interaction, communication, and collaboration between its users and owners. The distributed designers can contribute by instantiating these collaborative objects. Users placing an object react to the local neighboring conditions and therefore add their embodied design decision to the global architecture. The users get immersed in digital proximity by communicating through the integrated chat or digital calls, discussing strategies, debating design intentions, analyzing the built structure, and scanning for improvements. This pervasive collaboration lays the foundation for a democratization of the design process. As a proof of concept, this method was implemented with 20 students in a telepresence design studio. The participants embraced the real-time workflow and applied the collaborative tool throughout the semester from different locations and time zones. Using the platform to design the CollabWood prototype in real-time collaboratively was realized as a 1:1 project with local, accessible material and AR technology for assembly. The global pandemic accelerated the importance of collaboration. Realtime Architecture Platform’s response of providing an accessible common platform for real-time interaction, design, and collaboration can be regarded as a first step towards how we might work together in the future.

summary This research posits an innovative process of embedding carbon fibre as the primary structure within large-scale polymer 3D printed intricate architectural forms. The design and technical implications of this research are explored and demonstrated through two proto-architectural projects, Cloud Affects and Unclear Cloud, developed by the RMIT Architecture Snooks Research Lab. These projects are designed through a tectonic approach that we describe as a super composite – an approach that creates a compression of tectonics through algorithmic selforganisation and advanced manufacturing. Framed within a critical view of the lineage of polymer 3D printing and high tech fibres in the field of architectural design, the research outlines the limitations of existing robotic processes employed in contemporary carbon fibre fabrication. In response, the paper proposes an approach we describe asInfused Fibre Reinforced Plastic (IFRP) as a novel fabrication method for intricate geometries. This method involves 3D printing of sacrificial formwork conduits within the skin of complex architectural forms that are infused with continuous carbon fibre structural elements. Through detailed observation and critical review of Cloud Affects and Unclear Cloud (Fig. 2), the paper assesses innovations and challenges of this research in areas including printing, detailing, structural analysis and FEA modelling. The paper notes how these techniques have been refined through the iterative design of the two projects, including the development of fibre distribution mapping to optimise the structural performance.
