summary Most residential high-rise apartments currently built to satisfy growing demands for housing, are predetermined and thus, are unable to respond to the increasingly diversifying forms of co-habitation. This research pursues alternative flexible approaches by building on Habraken's 'Open Building' paradigm, where permanent, polyvalent 'Support System' layouts are strategically designed to accommodate highly adaptable, user-driven 'Infill systems'. In this context, we adopt the participatory decision-making approach, by means of a computational framework that facilitates user-driven parcellations of entire buildings into apartments segments. The means is an algorithm that allocates numerous user-preference regarding size and position simultaneously - by searching for parcel permutations through a graph-syntax representation of floor plans. The research forms part of a larger project that aims to evaluate the resilience of mass housing for future uncertain demands.

title Recognizing Architectural Objects in Floor-plan Drawings Using Deep-learning Style-transfer Algorithms

summary This paper describes an approach of recognizing floor plans by assorting essential objects of the plan using deep-learning based style transfer algorithms. Previously, the recognition of floor plans in the design and remodeling phase was labor-intensive, requiring expert-dependent and manual interpretation. For a computer to take in the imaged architectural plan information, the symbols in the plan must be understood. However, the computer has difficulty in extracting information directly from the preexisting plans due to the different conditions of the plans. The goal is to change the preexisting plans to an integrated format to improve the readability by transferring their style into a comprehensible way using Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGAN). About 100-floor plans were used for the dataset which was previously constructed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport of Korea. The proposed approach has such two steps: (1) to define the important objects contained in the floor plan which needs to be extracted and (2) to use the defined objects as training input data for the cGAN style transfer model. In this paper, wall, door, and window objects were selected as the target for extraction. The preexisting floor plans would be segmented into each part, altered into a consistent format which would then contribute to automatically extracting information for further utilization.

summary For most of the architectural design problems, there are underlying mathematical sub-problems, they may require to consider for generating architectural layouts. One of these sub-problems is to satisfy adjacency constraints for obtaining an initial layout. But in the literature, there does not exist a mathematical procedure that can address any given adjacency requirements, i.e., there does not exist a tool for generating a floor plan corresponding to any given adjacency (planar) graph (there exist algorithms for constructing floor plans for planar triangulated graphs only). In this paper, we are going to present an algorithm that would generate a floor plan corresponding to any given planar graph. The larger aim of this research is to develop a user-friendly tool that can generate a variety of initial layouts corresponding to a given graph, which can be further modified by the architects/designers.

summary This paper focuses on the problem of lack of housing, due to fast urbanization processes and urban population growth, particularly in developing regions of the globe. The goal is to propose an alternative for planning housing settlements, using a computational-based approach, and having as a case study an existing Brazilian favela, Santa Marta. The paper proposes a strategy to bridge between the use of shape grammars from analysis to design, by performing changes on the rule level. The research includes the development of an analytical grammar that captures the physical features of the settlement and its subsequent transformation into a synthetic grammar that can generate urban configurations that keep key features of the original settlement while avoiding its flaws. The paper is focused on the grammatical transformations performed to the analytic grammar to obtain the synthetic grammar and its subsequent validation. Results show that the solutions generated by the synthetic grammar do have higher quality when compared to the case study. This strategy is proposed as a framework for the application of shape grammars in design.

summary In the early design phases, Life Cycle Assessment can assist project stakeholders in making informed decisions on choosing structural systems and materials with an awareness of environmental sustainability through their embodied carbon content; yet embodied carbon is difficult to quantify without detailed design information in the early design stages. In response, this paper proposes a novel data-driven tool, prior to the definition of floor plan layouts to perform embodied carbon evaluation of existing building designs based on a Bayesian Neural Network (BNN) regression. The BNN is built from data drawn from existing floor plans of residential buildings, and predicts material volume and embodied carbon from generic design parameters typical in the early design stage. Users will be able to interact with the tool in Grasshopper or as an online resource, input generic design parameters, and obtain comparative visualizations based on the choice of a construction system and its environmental sustainability in a 'shoebox' interface - a simplified three-dimensional representation of a building's primary spatial units generated with the tool.

summary Style transfer is a design technique that is based on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, which is an innovative way to generate new images with the intervention of style images. The output image will carry the characteristic of style image and maintain the content of the input image. However, the design technique is employed in generating 2D images, which has a limited range in practical use. Thus, the goal of the project is to utilize style transfer as a toolset for architectural design and find out the possibility for a 3D modeling design. To implement style transfer into the research, floor plans of different heights are selected from a given design boundary and set as the content images, while a framework of a truss structure is set as the style image. Transferred images are obtained after processing the style transfer neural network, then the geometric images are translated into floor plans for new structure design. After the selection of the tilt angle and the degree of density, vertical components that connecting two adjacent layers are generated to be the pillars of the structure. At this stage, 2D style transferred images are successfully transformed into 3D geometries, which can be applied to the architectural design processes. Generally speaking, style transfer is an intelligent design tool that provides architects with a variety of choices of idea-generating. It has the potential to inspire architects at an early stage of design with not only 2D but also 3D format.

summary The nature of the architectural design process can be described along the lines of the following representational devices: the plan and the model. Plans can be considered one of the oldest methods to represent spatial and aesthetic information in an abstract, 2D space. However, to be used in the design process of 3D architectural solutions, these representations are inherently limited by the loss of rich information that occurs when compressing the three-dimensional world into a two-dimensional representation. During the first Digital Turn (Carpo 2013), the sheer amount and availability of models increased dramatically, as it became viable to create vast amounts of model variations to explore project alternatives among a much larger range of different physical and creative dimensions. 3D models show how the design object appears in real life, and can include a wider array of object information that is more easily understandable by nonexperts, as exemplified in techniques such as building information modeling and parametric modeling. Therefore, the ground condition of this paper considers that the inherent nature of architectural design and sensibility lies in the negotiation of 3D space coupled with the organization of voids and spatial components resulting in spatial sequences based on programmatic relationships, resulting in an assemblage (DeLanda 2016). These conditions constitute objects representing a material culture (the built environment) embedded in a symbolic and aesthetic culture (DeLanda 2016) that is created by the designer and captures their sensibilities.

summary In the past few years, more architects and engineers start thinking about the application of machine learning algorithms in the architectural design field such as building facades generation or floor plans generation, etc. However, due to the relatively slow development of 3D machine learning algorithms, 3D architecture form exploration through machine learning is still a difficult issue for architects. As a result, most of these applications are confined to the level of 2D. Based on the state-of-the-art 2D image generation algorithm, also the method of spatial sequence rules, this article proposes a brand-new strategy of encoding, decoding, and form generation between 2D drawings and 3D models, which we name 2D-3D Form Encoding WorkFlow. This method could provide some innovative design possibilities that generate the latent 3D forms between several different architectural styles. Benefited from the 2D network advantages and the image amplification network nested outside the benchmark network, we have significantly expanded the resolution of training results when compared with the existing form-finding algorithm and related achievements in recent years

summary The development of information technologies has resulted in a strong return of interest in the concept of automating the design process. Most of the attempts such as works of Hersey and Freedman, Duarte or the PRISM application are based on shape grammars. Another approach is evolutionary simulations in concept creation augmentation such as works of Dogan, Saratsis and Reinhart or Nahara and Terzidis.This study examines to what extent evolutionary algorithms can be used to automate early stages of residential multi-family building architectural design. To facilitate informed decision-making, a tool capable of analysing a building plot and proposing the best fitting building shape was designed and tested with Polish legal regulations taken into consideration.A script generating, analysing, and evolutionally optimising a 3D model of the apartment building, was developed. All models met the basic legal conditions and were optimised by four criteria - view obstruction, insolation, maximal allowed floor area built and building compactness. The script was later used on selected building plots producing thousands of solutions. The best performing solutions were selected and presented together with their calculated parameters.

summary During the early design phase, spatial designers search for design references to develop design ideas. In this process, the level of detail (LoD) of design references can significantly influence the quality of design outcomes. However, previous studies have only suggested guidelines indicating that abstract references are useful in the early design phase without the degree of LoD. In response, this study aims to identify the impact of LoD of design references on design outcomes during the design concept development. To this end, we proposed three different reference types (abstract, hybrid, and concrete), and conducted experiments to assess the creativity and efficiency of the design outcome per LoD type. We also developed the FPRT (Floor Plan Retrieving Tool) system along with 7,842 existing residential floor plans for the experiments. The results of the study showed that there is a significant difference in design outcomes depending on the LoD types.

summary When drawing architectural plans, designers should always define every detail, so the images can contain enough information to support design. This process usually costs much time in the early design stage when the design boundary has not been finally determined. Thus the designers spend a lot of time working forward and backward drawing sketches for different site conditions. Meanwhile, Machine Learning, as a decision-making tool, has been widely used in many fields. Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) is a model frame in machine learning, specially designed to learn and generate image data. Therefore, this research aims to apply GAN in creating architectural plan drawings, helping designers automatically generate the predicted details of apartment floor plans with given boundaries. Through the machine learning of image pairs that show the boundary and the details of plan drawings, the learning program will build a model to learn the connections between two given images, and then the evaluation program will generate architectural drawings according to the inputted boundary images. This automatic design tool can help release the heavy load of architects in the early design stage, quickly providing a preview of design solutions for architectural plans.

title Developing a fabrication workflow for irregular sawlogs

summary In this article, we suggest using contemporary manufacturing technologies to integrate material properties with architectural design tools, revealing new possibilities for the use of wood in architecture. Through an investigative approach, material capacities and fabrication methods are explored and combined towards establishing new workflows and architectural expressions, where material, fabrication and result are closely interlinked. The experimentation revolves around discarded, crooked oak logs, doomed to be used as firewood due to their irregularity. This project treats their diverging shapes differently by offering unique processing to each log informed by its particularities. We suggest here a way to use the natural forms and properties of sawlogs to generate new structures and spatial conditions. In this article, we discuss the scope of this approach and provide an example of a workflow for handling the discrete shapes of natural sawlogs in a system that involve the collection of material, scanning/digitisation, handling of a stockpile, computer analysis, design and robotic manufacturing. The creation of this specific method comes from a combination of investigation of wood as a material, review of existing research in the field, studies of the production lines in the current wood industry and experimentation through our in-house laboratory facilities. As such, the workflow features several solutions for handling the complex and different shapes and data of natural wood logs in a highly digitised machining and fabrication environment. This up-cycling of discarded wood supply establishes a non-standard workflow that utilises non-standard material stock and leads to a critical articulation of today’s linear material economy. The project becomes part of an ambition to reach sustainable development goals and technological innovation in global and resource-intensive architecture and building industry.

summary Despite recent approaches to enable the mass customization of double curved façade panels, there still exist challenges including waste reduction, accuracy, surface continuity, economic feasibility, and workflow disintegration. This paper proposes a computational approach for the design and fabrication of materially informed double curved façade panels with complex geometry. This approach proposes an optimized workflow to generate customizable double curved panels with complex geometry and different material properties, and optimize fabrication workflow for waste reduction. This workflow is applied to four different fabrication techniques: (1) vacuum forming, (2) clay extrusion, (3) sectioning, and (4) tessellation. Four experiments are introduced to apply surface rationalization and optimization using Rhino and Grasshopper scripting. Upon simulating each of the four design-to-fabrication techniques through different iterations, the experiment results demonstrated how the proposed workflows produced optimized surfaces with higher levels of accuracy and reduced waste material, customized per type of material and surface complexity.

summary Generative design methods may involve a complex design space with an overwhelming number of alternatives with their form and design performance data. Existing research addresses this complexity by introducing various techniques for simplification through clustering and dimensionality reduction. In this study, we further analyze the relevant literature on design space simplification and exploration to identify their potentials and gaps. We find that the potentials include: alleviating the choice overload problem, opening up new venues for interrelating design forms and data, creating visual overviews of the design space and introducing ways of creating form-driven queries. Building on that, we present the first prototype of a design analytics dashboard that combines coordinated and interactive visualizations of design forms and performance data along with the result of simplifying the design space through hierarchical clustering.

summary The Saltatur (Dancer in Latin) demonstrates innovative research in the design and fabrication of a prefab structure consisting of spatial concrete nodes assembled in a compression-only configuration. The compression-only body is kept in equilibrium using the post-tensioning steel rods at the top and the bottom of the structure, supporting an ultra-thin glass structure on its top. A node-based assembly was considered as a method of construction. An innovative detailing was developed that allows locking each member in its exact location in the body, obviating the need for a particular assembly sequence. A bespoke steel connection transfers the tensile forces between the concrete members effectively. Achieving a high level of efficiency in utilizing concrete for spatial systems requires a robust and powerful structural design and fabrication approach that has been meticulously exhibited in this project. The structural form of the project was developed using a three-dimensional geometry-based structural design method known as 3D Graphic Statics with precise control over the magnitude of the lateral forces in the system. The entire concrete body of the structure is held in compression by the tension ties at the top and bottom of the structure with no horizontal reactions at the supports. This particular internal distribution of forces in the form of the compression-only body reduces the bending moment in the system and, therefore, the required mass to span such a distance.

Such an approach adopts a computational design framework using a single low-tech and low-energy fabrication device to create nonrepetitive volumetric panels cast in situ. The design input for these panels is derived from design preferences and environmental control data. The technique expands upon easy to fabricate and cast methods, targeting less-developed logistical settings worldwide, and thus responding to imminent needs related to climate, available resources, and the economy.

summary This paper focuses on developing a novel geo-computational methodology for automating the generation of design options for district planning. The knowledge contribution focuses on the ability of the planners and designers to interact with and override the automated process. This approach is referred to as "agile automated modelling". The approach is demonstrated through a case study in which three adjacent districts are generated with a total area of approximately 1300 hectares. An automated modelling process is implemented based on a set of core planning principles established by the planners. The automated process generates street networks, land parcels, and 3-dimensional urban models. The process is broken down into three steps and users are then able to intervene at the end of every step to override and modify the outputs. This aims to help planners and designers to iteratively generate and assess various planning outcomes.

summary This article presents the parametric design and modeling in BIM of curved walls for 3d-printed construction in concrete, seeking to manage the reduction of materials and construction execution times, and enhance its architectural expression. The process described here is structured in the following phases: (i) conceptual preliminary design exploration, defining formal parameters in Revit, (ii) parametric modeling with Dynamo and Revit, (iii) integration of structural validation and printing programming of the robotic arm, and examples of execution with 3D-printed construction.

summary In digital design-to-fabrication workflows in architecture, in which digitally controlled machines perform complex fabrication tasks, all design decisions are typically made before production. In such processes, the formal definition of the final shape is explicitly inscribed into the design model by means of corresponding step-by-step machine instructions. The increasing use of augmented reality (AR) technologies for digital fabrication workflows, in which people are instructed to carry out complex fabrication tasks via AR interfaces, creates an opportunity to question and adjust the level of detail and the nature of such explicit formal definitions. People’s cognitive abilities could be leveraged to integrate explicit machine intelligence with implicit human knowledge and creativity, and thus to open up digital fabrication to intuitive and spontaneous design decisions during the building process. To address this question, this paper introduces open-ended Prototype-as-Artefact fabrication workflows that examine the possibilities of designing and creative choices while building in a human-robot collaborative setting. It describes the collaborative assembly of a complex timber structure with alternating building actions by two people and a collaborative robot, interfacing via a mobile device with object tracking and AR visualization functions. The spatial timber assembly being constructed follows a predefined grammar but is not planned at the beginning of the process; it is instead designed during fabrication. Prototype-as-Artefact thus serves as a case study to probe the potential of both intuitive and rational aspects of building and to create new collaborative work processes between humans and machines.
