summary One can argue that data is the 'new oil'. Yet more important than the sheer quantity of data is the question, in the context of architecture and design, how data is represented in design, as this is becoming a more relevant question to the architecture profession. We argue that data, in particular n-dimensional, is often hidden even in BIM models. Hence we propose a new way of understanding the space by (1) generate and integrate space analytics data using space syntax method as well as space usage data and (2) visualise the data using t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbour Embedding (t-SNE), an unsupervised learning and dimensionality reduction tool to help intuitively display high dimensions of data. This approach may help to discover the 'hidden layers' of the building information that may be otherwise omitted. This investigation, its proposed hypothesis, methodology, implications, significance and evaluation are presented in the paper.

summary The hybridization of architectural, biological and robotic agencies Situated in the field of architectural biodesign, InterspeciesForms explores a closer relationship between the fungus Pleurotus ostreatus and the designer in the creation of form. The intention of hybridizing mycelia’s agency of growth with architectural design intention is to generate novel, non-indexical crossbred designed outcomes that evolve preconceived notions of architectural form. Mycelium are threadlike fibrous root systems made up of hyphae, that form the vegetative part of a fungus (Jones 2020). Known as the hackers of the wood wide web (Simard 1997) mycelia form complex symbiotic relationships with other species that inhabit our earth. Michael Lim states “Fungi redefine resourcefulness, collaboration, resilience and symbiosis” (Lim 2022, p. 14). When wandering around the forest to connect with other species or searching for food, fungi form elaborate and entangled networks by spreading their hyphal tips. Shown in Figure 1, this living labyrinth results in the aesthetic formation of an intricate web. Due to the organisms ability to determine the most effective direction of growth, communicate with its surrounding ecosystem, and connect with other species, fungi are indeed an intelligent species with a unique aesthetic that must not be ignored. In drawing on these concepts, I refer to the organism’s ability to search for, tangle, and digest its surroundings as ‘mycelia agency of growth’. It is this specific behavioral characteristic that is the focus of this research, with which I, as the architect, set out to co-create and hybridize with.

summary The paper reports the formulation, the design, and the results of a serious game developed for structuring negotiations concerning the redevelopment of a university campus with various stakeholders. The main aim of this research was to formulate the redevelopment planning problem as an abstract and discrete decision-making problem involving multiple actions, multiple actors with preconceived gains and losses with respect to the comprising actions, and decisions as combinations of actions. Using fictitious and yet realistic scenarios and stakeholders as simulation, the results evidence how different levels of democratic participation and different modes of moderation can affect reaching a consensus and present in a mathematical characterisation of a consensus as a state of equilibrium. The small set of actions and actors enabled a chance to compute a theoretically optimal state of consensus, where the efficiency and the effectiveness of different modes of moderation and participatory rights could be observed and analysed.

summary As one of the most important areas in the Palace Museum, Beijing, China, the Hall of Mental Cultivation had suffered from overcrowding of visitors before it was closed in 2016 for conservation. Preparing for the reopening in 2020, the Palace Museum decided to take the chance and initiate finer-grained tourism management in the Hall. This research intends to provide an audio-guided touring program by dynamically evaluating the Tourism Carrying Capacity (TCC) with the highlight spots in the Hall, to operate the touring program spatiotemporally. Framing an optimization problem for the touring program, an agent-based simulator, Thunderhead Pathfinder, originally developed for evacuation in the emergency, is utilized to verify the performance of the touring system. The simulation shows that the proposed touring program could precisely fit all the key requirements to improve the visitors' experience, to guarantee heritage safety, and to ensure more efficient management.

summary This paper presents findings of a survey conducted to assess students’ experiences within the online instruction stage of their architectural education during the lockdown period caused by the COVID-19 pandemic between March and June 2020. The study was conducted in two departments of architecture in both Cairo branches of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT), Egypt, with special focus on courses involving a CAAD component. The objective of this exploratory study was to understand students’ learning experiences within the online period, and to investigate challenges facing architectural education. A mixed methods study was used, where a questionnaire-based survey was developed to gather qualitative and quantitative data based on the opinions of a sample of students from both departments. Findings focus on the qualitative component to describe students’ experiences, with quantitative data used for triangulation purposes. Results underline students’ positive learning experiences and challenges faced. Insights regarding digital tool preferences were also revealed. Findings are not only significant in understanding an important event that caused remote architectural education in Egypt but may also serve as an important stepping-stone towards the future of design education in light of newly-introduced disruptive online learning technologies made necessary in response to lockdowns worldwide

summary Architects have long sought to create spaces that can relate to or even induce specific emotional conditions in their users, such as states of relaxation or engagement. Dynamic or calming qualities were given to these spaces by controlling form, perspective, lighting, color, and materiality. The actual impact of these complex design decisions has been challenging to assess, from both quantitative and qualitative standpoints, because neural empathic responses, defined in this paper by feature indexes (FIs) and mind indexes (MIs), are highly subjective experiences. Recent advances in the fields of virtual procedural environments (VPEs) and virtual reality (VR), supported by powerful game engine (GE) technologies, provide computational designers with a new set of design instruments that, when combined with brain-computing interfacing (BCI) and eye-tracking (E-T) hardware, can be used to assess complex empathic reactions. As the COVID-19 health crisis showed, virtual social interaction becomes increasingly relevant, and the social catalytic potential of VPEs can open new design possibilities. The research presented in this paper introduces the cyber-physical design of such an affective computing system. It focuses on how relevant empathic data can be acquired in real time by exposing subjects within a dynamic VR-based VPE and assessing their emotional responses while controlling the actual generative parameters via a live feedback loop. A combination of VR, BCI, and E-T solutions integrated within a GE is proposed and discussed. By using a VPE inside a BCI system that can be accurately correlated with E-T, this paper proposes to identify potential morphological and lighting factors that either alone or combined can have an empathic effect expressed by the relevant responses of the MIs.

summary This paper investigates an interactive and adaptive control system for kinetic architectural applications with a distributed sensing and actuation network to control modular fiber-reinforced composite components. The aim of the project was to control the actuation of a foldable lightweight structure to generate programmatic changes. A server parses input commands and geometric feedback from embedded sensors and online data to drive physical actuation and generate a digital twin for real-time monitoring. Physical components are origami-like folding plates of glass and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, developed in parallel research. Accelerometer data is analyzed to determine component geometry. A component controller drives actuators to maintain or move towards desired positions. Touch sensors embedded within the material allow direct control, and an online user interface provides high-level kinematic goals to the system. A hierarchical control system parses various inputs and determines actuation based on safety protocols and prioritization algorithms. Development includes hardware and software to enable modular expansion. This research demonstrates strategies for embedded networks in interactive kinematic structures and opens the door for deeper investigations such as artificial intelligence in control algorithms, material computation, as well as real-time modeling and simulation of structural systems.

summary The quality of an urban space significantly influences the habitability of a city. In an era where buildings are becoming more and more "intelligent", outdoor space needs to evolve to make it more welcoming and to allow it to be shared and appropriate, capable of expanding opportunities and functionality for the inhabitant who lives in it. In this context the COGITO project, is exploring ways to extend the cognitive logic typical of intelligent buildings to the urban space. We propose to appropriate the model developed in COGITO and apply it in a case study of the city of Medellin.

summary This paper presents an analysis of the output, impact, use and content of 1,860 papers that were published in the CAADRIA conference proceedings over the last 20+ years (from 1996 to 2019). The applied methodology is a blend of bibliometrics, webometrics and clustering with text mining. The bibliometric analysis leads to quantitative and qualitative results on three levels: (1) author, (2) article and (3) association. The most productive authors authored over 50 papers, and the top 20% authors have over 80 % of all citations generated by CAADRIA proceedings. The overall impact of CAADRIA may be characterised by nearly 2,000 known citations and by the h-index that is 17. The webometrics based on CumInCAD.org reveals that the CAADRIA papers served over 200 k users, which is a considerable visibility for scientific CAAD output. The keywords most frequently used by authors were digital fabrication, BIM and parametric, generative, computational design. Notably, 90% of the papers' descriptors are 2-grams. This study may be useful to researchers, educators and publishers interested in CAAD.

summary Flexo.In-Form. is a prototype derived from an experimental exercise to verify the structural effort of active flexion. Bending behavior is used as a design tool applied to structures that base their geometry on the elastic deformation of flat elements. Through "Integrative Processes" and a "Performance-Oriented Design Approach", the operational relationship between active mechanical mechanisms, material performance and geometric design has been enhanced. The proposed geometric and material optimization process extends the experiences with physical models of complex shapes through computational numerical calculation and its possibilities of simulation and digital evaluation.

summary In the stage of prototype practice, the maker mainly works by himself, but it needs to test and adapt to find correct fabrication method when maker didn’t have clearly fabrication description. Therefore, rapid prototyping is very important in the prototype practice of the maker. “Design- Fabrication-Assembly” (DFA)- an integration prototyping process which helps designers in creating kinetic skin by following a holistic process. However, DFA lacks a medium for communication between design, fabrication and assembly status. This paper proposes a solution called co-existing Fabrication System (CoFabs) by combining multiple sensory components and visualization feedbacks. We combine mixed reality (MR) and the concept of digital twin (DT)–a device that uses a virtual interface to control a physical mechanism for fabrication and assembly. By integrating virtual and physical, CoFab allows designers using different methods of observation to prototype more rigorously and interactively correct design decisions in real-time.

summary The paper presents a model for decentralizing building information modelling, through implementing its infrastructure using the decentralized web. We discuss the shortcomings of BIM in terms of its infrastructure, with a focus on tracing identities of design authorship in this collective design tool. In parallel we examine the issues with BIM in the cloud and propose a decentralized infrastructure based on the Ethereum blockchain and the Interplanetary filesystem (IPFS). A series of computing nodes, that act as nodes on the Ethereum Blockchain, host disk storage with which they participate in a larger storage pool on the Interplanetary Filesystem. This storage is made available through an API is used by architects and designers creating and editing a building information model that resides on the IPFS decentralised storage. Through this infrastructure central servers are eliminated, and BIM libraries and models can be shared with others in an immutable and transparent manner. As such Architecture practices are able to exploit their intellectual property in novel ways, by making it public on the internet. The infrastructure also allows the decentralised creation of a resilient global pool of data that allows the participation of computation agents in the creation and simulation of BIM models.

summary There has been a growing interest in living materials and fabrication processes including the use of bacteria, algae, fungi, and yeast to offer sustainable alternatives to industrial materials synthesis. Microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a biomineralization process that has been widely researched to solve engineering problems such as concrete cracking and to strengthen soils. MICP can also be used as an alternative to cement in the fabrication of building materials and, because of the unique process of living fabrication, if we see bacteria as our design collaborators, new types of fabrication and processes may be possible. The process of biomineralization is inherently different from traditional fabrication processes that use casting or molding. Its properties are influenced by the active bacterial processes that are connected to the casting environment. Understanding and working with interrelated factors enables a novel casting approach and the exploration of a range of form types and materials of variable consistencies and structure. We report on an experiment with partial control of mineralization through the design of different experimental vessels to direct and influence the cementation process of sand. In order to capture the form of the calcification in these experiments, we have analyzed the results using three-dimensional imaging and a technique that excavates the most friable material from the cast in stages. The resulting scans are used to reconstruct the cementation timeline. This reveals a hidden fabrication/growth process. These experiments offer a different perspective on form finding in material fabrication.

summary This article presents a didactic experience carried out with the use of a BIM tool in the Thermal Environmental Comfort discipline of the graduate course in Architecture and Urbanism of a private Higher Education Institution in the city of Salvador-Bahia. Starting in 2020, students began designing solar protection devices using a geometric model in Revit. The method described in Annex I of the Technical Regulation on the Quality of Energy Efficiency Level in Residential Buildings (RTQ-R) was applied. The results obtained showed a better understanding by the students about the importance of correctly sizing solar protection devices for different orientations.

summary The World is experiencing a rapid surge in urban population, in addition to fast urbanization processes. Contemporary cities witness the rise of numerous urban and social problems, leading to the emergence of informal settlements. Still, computational and parametric resources have increasingly been adopted in novel approaches to urban planning and design. These resources can be used in informal settlements to improve urban quality without losing their essential features. This paper describes a teaching experience in the context of a design studio that uses shape grammars and parametric tools to design for an informal settlement context in Ahmedabad, India.

summary The material balance of the Earth is being challenged. The year 2020 was marked as the year when the total weight of human-made materials globally surpassed the weight of all life on Earth, while it is estimated that in the years to come the growth rate of mass added to the anthroposphere will increase exponentially (Elhacham et al., 2020). In this context of hypergrowth coupled with the climate emergency, the growing rate of urbanization and the increasing social and political awareness on the matters of the Anthropocene, the topics of resource depletion or insufficiency are being reframed. This keynote lecture at ACADIA 2023 highlights the importance of redefining resources and is introducing a new cultural, design and construction paradigm. Operating from an abundance mindset rather than from scarcity (Gausa et al., 2020) presents a new paradigm, particularly relevant in the design and production of the built environment. This approach expands the definition of resources, encompassing raw, non-raw, renewable, and recyclable materials. Shifting attention to the Anthroposphere as a source rather than just a destination for processed goods has the potential to disrupt linear design patterns and enhance circularity in cities and the built environment.

summary In this presentation, the reflections about the application of an innovative cathedra experience for the formation of industrial designers will be exposed. It revolved around the development of what the cathedra team defines as "reactive devices", highlighting the role of the design into an educational proposal that is based on the principles of Maker culture. In this experience converge knowledge from different areas of knowledge, through a synergy of conventional and disruptive technologies that allow novel approaches of capture, analyze and understanding of the reality in the searching of a design for the transformation.

summary This research project, conducted at the University of Montreal School of Architecture, presents an innovative approach to the construction of reticulated structures, focusing on the development and application of a novel, ultralight aluminum node. The node, constructed from a folded, laser-cut, 1-mm aluminum sheet, is designed to accommodate wooden linear members with varied rectangular sections, making it adaptable to bespoke geometries and low valence nodes. This innovative design offers a solution to the long-standing challenge in the construction industry of balancing cost, customization, and weight for reticulated structures through novel node designs (Abdelwahab and Tsavdaridis 2019; Dyvik et al. 2023; Chilton 2007; Rochas 2014; Hassani et al. 2020).

summary The global request of energy politics and actions against climate change, reiterate the importance of promoting the nearly zero-energy buildings (nZEB), taking into account environmental habitability and comfort; therefore, this type of buildings has to include a process, design, and construction, intelligent. Accordingly, the present research shows a methodology for the design of almost zero-energy housing, by using BIM under an environment of extreme collaboration; evaluating energy consumption and active solar generation. Thus, the proposed methodology allows optimizing the processes related to design time, level of geometric development, and the application and evaluation of sustainability strategies, to achieve nearly zero-energy housing within the city Concepcion Chile.
