title Affective Computing for Generating Virtual Procedural Environments Using Game Technologies

summary Architects have long sought to create spaces that can relate to or even induce specific emotional conditions in their users, such as states of relaxation or engagement. Dynamic or calming qualities were given to these spaces by controlling form, perspective, lighting, color, and materiality. The actual impact of these complex design decisions has been challenging to assess, from both quantitative and qualitative standpoints, because neural empathic responses, defined in this paper by feature indexes (FIs) and mind indexes (MIs), are highly subjective experiences. Recent advances in the fields of virtual procedural environments (VPEs) and virtual reality (VR), supported by powerful game engine (GE) technologies, provide computational designers with a new set of design instruments that, when combined with brain-computing interfacing (BCI) and eye-tracking (E-T) hardware, can be used to assess complex empathic reactions. As the COVID-19 health crisis showed, virtual social interaction becomes increasingly relevant, and the social catalytic potential of VPEs can open new design possibilities. The research presented in this paper introduces the cyber-physical design of such an affective computing system. It focuses on how relevant empathic data can be acquired in real time by exposing subjects within a dynamic VR-based VPE and assessing their emotional responses while controlling the actual generative parameters via a live feedback loop. A combination of VR, BCI, and E-T solutions integrated within a GE is proposed and discussed. By using a VPE inside a BCI system that can be accurately correlated with E-T, this paper proposes to identify potential morphological and lighting factors that either alone or combined can have an empathic effect expressed by the relevant responses of the MIs.

summary Legibility is a core concept in spatial cognition theories since Kevin Lynch published The Image of the City in 1960. It is the ability of a city to be interpreted and easily used, travelled and enjoyed, from the pedestrian's perspective. Following a proposal in the participatory budget process of the city of Bilbao, we wrote a technical report to improve the urban legibility of the city and facilitate wayfinding through innovations in signage. This paper aims to present this project, which is an application of computational methods to measure urban legibility that resulted in a proposal for a new wayfinding strategy for Bilbao. The method is based on GIS data, and it simulates urban processes using dedicated algorithms, allowing us to perform two analyses that resulted in two overlapping maps: a heat map of decision points and a map of visual openings. It allowed us to perceive common urban elements that can help to decide both the location of the wayfinding signage and how it should provide the relevant information. In addition, the research introduces the concept of anticipation points, as a complement to the existing idea of decision points.

summary This paper introduces a new perspective on methodological requirements in building design related to questions of sustainability, where stakeholders ought to look at design in an integrated way when economy, society, and technical components are embedded in an ecological holistic perspective. To bind these different aspects together and face complexity, while the goal is to reach sustainability, Holistic Building Design (HBD) is drawn on existing concepts of systems thinking (ST), integrated design processes (IDP), and application of innovative technologies through building information modeling (BIM). The main aim of this approach is to involve deeper in all aspects of sustainable building design. The methodology is introduced and empirically practiced in a master's level course, and a general overview besides the first results of this on-going process are presented in this paper. It is observed that the HBD framework could significantly influence the understanding of the design process and enhancing it by iterative decision-making and turning the focus on the early design stage.

summary This paper embraces the future-open, anti-humanist sensibility of cyborgism from a societal perspective and locates the origin of the ongoing historical transformation of human identities and ways of life in the technology-induced transformation of societal communication dynamics. The evolution of language, and later of writing systems, is identified as crucial empowering engines of human productive cooperation and cultural evolution. Equally crucial for collective human selftransformation is the ever-evolving construction of artificial environments. Built environments are as much a human universal as language and all societal evolution depends on them as frames within which an increasingly complex social order can emerge and evolve. They constitute an indispensable material substrate of societal evolution. These built environments do not only function as physical ordering channels but also operate as information-rich spatio-visual languages, as a form of writing. This insight opens up the project of architectural semiology as task to radically upgrade the communicative capacity of the built environment via deliberate design efforts that understand the design of built environments primarily as the design of an eloquent text formulated by an expressive architectural language. The paper ends with a critical description of a recent academic design research project illustrating how such a semiological project can be conceived. Extrapolating from this leads the authors to speculate about a potentially far-reaching, new medium of communication and means of societal integration, facilitating a ‘cyborg super-society’.

summary Since the age of humanism, both on the easel and our screens, the production of the architectural image has been conventionally governed by one individual, whom we might refer to as the drafter. As the primary author sitting in the chair of the vantage point, the drafter occupies the privileged position, for whom the translation between the second and third dimensions establishes an approximate realism. The viewers, or secondary participants, by contrast, are relegated to a subordinate position, subject to the residual distortions of the drafter’s vision, based on their relative vantage points. While perhaps cynical, our current condition does not share the same philosophical positivistic optimism of the Renaissance, nor the ideal faith in humanity that empowered the democratic universalisms of modernity. Rather, it is formed from an ambiguous inquiry into creating a new sense of truth, brought forth by the proliferation and amplification of multiple individual ‘perspectives.’ In his conclusion to The Projective Cast, Evans illustrates ten ‘transitive spaces’ of geometric projection towards the generation and representation of a designed object. The fifth “transitive space” describes the space between a building or object and its defined perspectival representations. Evans observes that this path typically follows the progression from the object to a photo or a drawing and is rarely reversed. This project and machine designed for an exhibition seeks to establish a new procedure for generating design, neither subjectively from a personal static individual point nor objectively in the round for all to experience equally. Instead, a new machine establishes form as the hybrid of multiple responsive perspectives wherein all viewers are simultaneously the generator of projective form and the receiver of distorted images.

summary From the epidemiological perspective, previous research methods of COVID-19 are generally based on classical statistical analysis. As a result, spatial information is often not used effectively. This paper uses image-based neural networks to explore the relationship between urban spatial risk and the distribution of infected populations, and the design of urban facilities. We take the Spatio-temporal data of people infected with new coronary pneumonia before February 28 in Wuhan in 2020 as the research object. We use kriging spatial interpolation technology and core density estimation technology to establish the epidemic heat distribution on fine grid units. We further examine the distribution of nine main spatial risk factors, including agencies, hospitals, park squares, sports fields, banks, hotels, Etc., which are tested for the significant positive correlation with the heat distribution of the epidemic. The weights of the spatial risk factors are used for training Generative Adversarial Network models, which predict the heat distribution of the outbreak in a given area. According to the trained model, optimizing the relevant environment design in urban areas to control risk factors effectively prevents and manages the epidemic from dispersing. The input image of the machine learning model is a city plan converted by public infrastructures, and the output image is a map of urban spatial risk factors in the given area.

summary The paper presents a model for decentralizing building information modelling, through implementing its infrastructure using the decentralized web. We discuss the shortcomings of BIM in terms of its infrastructure, with a focus on tracing identities of design authorship in this collective design tool. In parallel we examine the issues with BIM in the cloud and propose a decentralized infrastructure based on the Ethereum blockchain and the Interplanetary filesystem (IPFS). A series of computing nodes, that act as nodes on the Ethereum Blockchain, host disk storage with which they participate in a larger storage pool on the Interplanetary Filesystem. This storage is made available through an API is used by architects and designers creating and editing a building information model that resides on the IPFS decentralised storage. Through this infrastructure central servers are eliminated, and BIM libraries and models can be shared with others in an immutable and transparent manner. As such Architecture practices are able to exploit their intellectual property in novel ways, by making it public on the internet. The infrastructure also allows the decentralised creation of a resilient global pool of data that allows the participation of computation agents in the creation and simulation of BIM models.

title Developing a fabrication workflow for irregular sawlogs

summary In this article, we suggest using contemporary manufacturing technologies to integrate material properties with architectural design tools, revealing new possibilities for the use of wood in architecture. Through an investigative approach, material capacities and fabrication methods are explored and combined towards establishing new workflows and architectural expressions, where material, fabrication and result are closely interlinked. The experimentation revolves around discarded, crooked oak logs, doomed to be used as firewood due to their irregularity. This project treats their diverging shapes differently by offering unique processing to each log informed by its particularities. We suggest here a way to use the natural forms and properties of sawlogs to generate new structures and spatial conditions. In this article, we discuss the scope of this approach and provide an example of a workflow for handling the discrete shapes of natural sawlogs in a system that involve the collection of material, scanning/digitisation, handling of a stockpile, computer analysis, design and robotic manufacturing. The creation of this specific method comes from a combination of investigation of wood as a material, review of existing research in the field, studies of the production lines in the current wood industry and experimentation through our in-house laboratory facilities. As such, the workflow features several solutions for handling the complex and different shapes and data of natural wood logs in a highly digitised machining and fabrication environment. This up-cycling of discarded wood supply establishes a non-standard workflow that utilises non-standard material stock and leads to a critical articulation of today’s linear material economy. The project becomes part of an ambition to reach sustainable development goals and technological innovation in global and resource-intensive architecture and building industry.

summary Generative design methods may involve a complex design space with an overwhelming number of alternatives with their form and design performance data. Existing research addresses this complexity by introducing various techniques for simplification through clustering and dimensionality reduction. In this study, we further analyze the relevant literature on design space simplification and exploration to identify their potentials and gaps. We find that the potentials include: alleviating the choice overload problem, opening up new venues for interrelating design forms and data, creating visual overviews of the design space and introducing ways of creating form-driven queries. Building on that, we present the first prototype of a design analytics dashboard that combines coordinated and interactive visualizations of design forms and performance data along with the result of simplifying the design space through hierarchical clustering.

summary Generative design has been explored to produce unprecedented geometries, nevertheless design constraints are, in most cases, second-graded in the computational process. In this paper, reinforcement learning is deployed in order to explore the potential of generative design satisfying design objectives. The aim is to overcome the three issues identified in the state of the art: topological inconsistency, less variations in style and unpredictability in design. The goal of this paper is to develop a machine learning framework, which works as an intellectual design interpreter capable of codifying an input geometry to form a new geometry. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method can generate a family of tables of unique aesthetics, satisfying topological consistency under given constraints.

summary Deep learning is expected to offer new opportunities and a new paradigm for the field of architecture. One such opportunity is teaching neural networks to visually understand architectural elements from the built environment. However, the availability of large training datasets is one of the biggest limitations of neural networks. Also, the vast majority of training data for visual recognition tasks is annotated by humans. In order to resolve this bottleneck, we present a concept of a hybrid system—using both building information modeling (BIM) and hyperrealistic (photorealistic) rendering—to synthesize datasets for training a neural network for building object recognition in photos. For generating our training dataset, BIMrAI, we used an existing BIM model and a corresponding photorealistically rendered model of the same building. We created methods for using renderings to train a deep learning model, trained a generative adversarial network (GAN) model using these methods, and tested the output model on real-world photos. For the specific case study presented in this paper, our results show that a neural network trained with synthetic data (i.e., photorealistic renderings and BIM-based semantic labels) can be used to identify building objects from photos without using photos in the training data. Future work can enhance the presented methods using available BIM models and renderings for more generalized mapping and description of photographed built environments.

summary This paper details an experimental project developed in an academic and pedagogical environment, aiming to bring together visual arts and computer science coursework in the creation of an interactive installation for a live event at The J. Paul Getty Museum. The result incorporates interactive visuals based on the user’s movements and facial expressions, accompanied by synthetic texts generated using machine learning algorithms trained on the museum’s art collection. Special focus is paid to how advances in computing such as Deep Learning and Natural Language Processing can contribute to deeper engagement with users and add new layers of interactivity.

summary In digital design-to-fabrication workflows in architecture, in which digitally controlled machines perform complex fabrication tasks, all design decisions are typically made before production. In such processes, the formal definition of the final shape is explicitly inscribed into the design model by means of corresponding step-by-step machine instructions. The increasing use of augmented reality (AR) technologies for digital fabrication workflows, in which people are instructed to carry out complex fabrication tasks via AR interfaces, creates an opportunity to question and adjust the level of detail and the nature of such explicit formal definitions. People’s cognitive abilities could be leveraged to integrate explicit machine intelligence with implicit human knowledge and creativity, and thus to open up digital fabrication to intuitive and spontaneous design decisions during the building process. To address this question, this paper introduces open-ended Prototype-as-Artefact fabrication workflows that examine the possibilities of designing and creative choices while building in a human-robot collaborative setting. It describes the collaborative assembly of a complex timber structure with alternating building actions by two people and a collaborative robot, interfacing via a mobile device with object tracking and AR visualization functions. The spatial timber assembly being constructed follows a predefined grammar but is not planned at the beginning of the process; it is instead designed during fabrication. Prototype-as-Artefact thus serves as a case study to probe the potential of both intuitive and rational aspects of building and to create new collaborative work processes between humans and machines.

summary A renewed interest in stereotomy, narrowly entwined with digital technologies, has allowed for the recovery and proposal of new techniques and expressions in this building approach. A new classification scheme for stereotomy research allows for the framing of various aspects related to this discipline, including a newly developed fabrication system specially tailored for the wedge-shaped voussoirs. This fabrication system is based in a reusable mould which may assume an infinite number of geometries, avoiding the wasteful discarding of material found in subtractive strategies. The usage of a mould also allows for more sustainable materials to be employed, catering to current challenges. The strategies subject for demonstration in this project rely on various bottom-up approaches, which involve particle physic simulations such as a hanging model to compute an optimal stereo-funicular shape, or spring mechanisms to find optimal coplanar solutions. The proposed mechanisms work in a parametric algorithmically environment, able to handle dozens of uniquely different voussoirs at the same time. Together with the automatic translation to fabrication data, the proposed shape complexity would hardly be built with classic tools. The Tamandua Vault project has the purpose of exemplifying the possibilities of an updated stereotomy, while its design demonstrates current strategies that may be employed in the resolution of complex geometrical problems and bespoke fabrication of construction components for stereotomy.

summary The new construction that is projected to take place between 2020 and 2040 plays a critical role in embodied carbon emissions. The change in material selection is inversely proportional to the budget as the project progresses. Given the fact that early-stage design processes often do not include environmental performance metrics, there is an opportunity to investigate a toolset that enables early-stage design processes to integrate this type of analysis into the preferred workflow of concept designers. The value here is that early-stage environmental feedback can inform the crucial decisions that are made in the beginning, giving a greater chance for a building with better environmental performance in terms of its life cycle. This paper presents the development of a tool called LearnCarbon, as a plugin of Rhino3d, used to educate architects and engineers in the early stages about the environmental impact of their design. It facilitates two neural networks trained with the Embodied Carbon Benchmark Study by Carbon Leadership Forum, which learns the relationship between building geometry, typology, and construction type with the Global Warming potential (GWP) in tons of C02 equivalent (tCO2e). The first one, a regression model, can predict the GWP based on the massing model of a building, along with information about typology and location. The second one, a classification model, predicts the construction type given a massing model and target GWP. LearnCarbon can help improve the building life cycle impact significantly through early predictions of the structure’s material and can be used as a tool for facilitating sustainable discussions between the architect and the client.

summary The irreversible imprint of humankind on Earth calls for revisiting current construction practices. This paper forwards a vision for post-Anthropocene, large-scale, architectural, and landscape construction. This vision relates to transforming natural terrains into architecture using on-site robotic tools and enabling greater sustainability through increased sensibility. Despite advancements in large-scale digital fabrication in architecture, the field still mainly focuses on the production of objects. The proposed vision aims to advance theory and practice towards territorial scale digital fabrication of environments. Three notions are proposed: material-aware construction, large-scale customization, and integrated fabrication. These aspects are demonstrated through research and teaching projects. Using scale models, they explore the deployment of robotic tools toward reforming, stabilizing, and reconstituting soil in an architectural context. Together, they propose a theoretical ground for in situ digital fabrication for a new era, relinking architecture to the terrains upon which it is formed.

summary This project aims to continue the correlative study between two fundamental entities of digital architecture: the object and the field. Following periods of experimentations on the ""field"" (materialization of flows of data through animation), the ""field of objects"" (parametricism), the ""object"" (OOO), we investigate the last possible interaction remaining: the ""object-field,"" by merging the formal characteristics of the object with the structural flow of its internal field. This investigation is achieved by exploring the high-resolution features of 3d printing in the design of autonomous architectural objects expressing materiality through topological optimization. The objects are generated by an iterative process of volumetric reduction, resulting in an ensemble of monoliths. Four of them are selected and analyzed through topological optimization in order to extract their internal fields. Next, a series of high-resolution algorithmic systems translate the structural information into 3d printed materiality. Of the four object-fields, one materializes, close to identical, the result of the optimization, giving the keystone to understanding the others. The second one expresses the structural flow through a 1mm voxel system, informed by the optimization, having the effect of stiffening the structure where it is needed and thus generating a new topography on the object. The last two explore the blur that this high-resolution can paradoxically create, with complete integration of the optimal structure in a transparent monolith. This is achieved by a vertex displacement algorithm, and the dissolution of the formal data of the monolith and the structural flows, through the mereological assembly of simple linear elements. For each object-field, a series of drawings was developed using specific algorithmic procedures derived from the peculiarities of their complex geometry. The drawings aim to catalyze coherence throughout the project, where similarities, hitherto kept apart by the multiple materialities, begin to dialogue.

summary This paper presents a completed research project that proposes a new approach for creating circular buildings through the use of biodegradable, in situ resources with the help of computational design and digital fabrication technologies. Common Reed (Phragmites Australis) is an abundantly available natural material found throughout the world. Reed is typically used for thatch roofing in Europe, providing insulation and a weather-tight surface. Elsewhere, traditional techniques of weaving and bundling reeds have long been used to create entire buildings. The use of a digital production chain was explored as a means towards expanding the potential of reed as a sustainable, locally produced, construction material. Following an iterative process of designing from the micro to the macro scale and by experimenting with robotic assembly, the result is a reed-based system in the form of discrete components that can be configured to create a variety of structures.

title A framework for interactive human–robot design exploration

summary This study seeks to identify key aspects for increased integration of interactive robotics within the creative design process. Through its character as foundational research, the study aims to contribute to the advancement of new explorative design methods to support architects in their exploration of fabrication and assembly of an integrated performance-driven architecture. The article describes and investigates a proposed design framework for supporting an interactive human–robot design process. The proposed framework is examined through a 3-week architectural studio, with university master students exploring the design of a brick construction with the support of an interactive robotic platform. Evaluation of the proposed framework was done by triangulation of the authors’ qualitative user observations, quantitative logging of the students’ individual design processes, and through questionnaires completed after finishing the studies. The result suggests that interactive human–robot fabrication is a relevant mode of design with positive effect on the process of creative design exploration.

summary Worldwide we produce billions of tonnes of waste per year, including a million tonnes of plastic waste. Currently, there are methods for recycling plastic, but these methods can be expensive and time-consuming, resulting in most of the plastic being thrown into the landfill. Because plastic does not fully degrade, it ends up in the ocean and other waterways, poisoning the water with toxins. The purpose of this research is to provide a solution to reducing plastic waste by creating an alternative method of recycling that utilises new technologies such as additive manufacturing, to create a building material that fits into the concept of the circular economy. The findings of this research explored the recycling of plastic by collecting plastic waste such as PLA (Polylactic Acid) from old 3D printed models and other sources. The plastic was recycled into filament for additive manufacturing (AM) and used to print a building component, establishing a foundational proof of concept for the use of recycled plastic as a potential building material.
