title Automating Concrete Construction: Sustainable social housing in Colombia

summary The construction industry is a major source of carbon, and the main culprit is concrete. In addition, productivity for the construction sector is poor, and concrete construction in particular is labour intensive, slow, and costly. This paper introduces ongoing research addressing these two fundamental issues. First, by developing an integrated framework for automating manufacturing of reinforced concrete building elements through computation and robotic technology, and second by adapting such framework to the specific technical and socio- economic contexts of Colombian construction, specifically for social housing.

summary Social indicators are fundamental tools for measuring social facts, and their use has the potential to facilitate broad access to information. In 2020, the World experienced the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic, which impacted the socio-spatial reality of cities around the world in several aspects and deepened social inequalities. As part of a coping Covid-19 project by ArqPET, the Somar Platform, this paper presents a mapping process of the spread of Covid-19 in Fortaleza during the four months after its arrival. The mapping, which aims to inform public policies and provides documents that support the demand for adequate housing and sanitary infrastructure in the neglected spaces of the city, relates the spread of the virus to social indicators and uses database technology to optimize its productions.

title Blockchain Grammars for Validating the Design Process

summary This paper presents and develops the concept of Decentralised Autonomous Organisation (DAO) as a platform for collaboration, via a design scenario in which Blockchain (BC) technology is implemented for validation purposes. The envisioned scenario simulates designers proposing multiple solutions for a given task and adopting shape grammars and environmental analysis and regulations as design drivers. Proposed solutions are uploaded, stored, presented, and evaluated in a DAO in which the decision process gets validated via the reputation of the participants and its governance system. This study lays the foundation and ignites the development of a larger framework in which design collaboration and competition are fostered and results secured, impacting design value and financial transactions.

title Indicators for Urban Green (IUG): Proposal for a Computational Implementation

summary Due to the reality of the constructive densification process at urban areas in disproportion to urban vegetation cover, the aim of this paper is to formulate two indicators for measuring vegetated density. A proportion between vegetated density and built density was proposed. In order to develop a system of computational tools, an algorithmic-parametric framework called Indicators for Urban Green (IUG) was implemented. The focus is on the internal validation of the IUG through testing hypothetical urban situations. The proposed method leans on the premise of contributing to quanti-qualitative studies focused on mitigating the impacts of anthropogenic action caused at the microclimatic scale of cities.

title Standardization of Airport Architectural Design Projects BIM-based for Code Checking

summary This paper addresses the use of BIM for code verification and automatic validation of the Architectural Design of Airports (ADA). In Brazil, the evaluation and approval of ADA are carried out by INFRAERO. Currently, designs are evaluated manually, resulting in errors and long evaluation time. To deal with this problem, a conceptual framework for automated ADA assessment with Code Checking is proposed. The method used was Design Science Research, with the proposal of an artifact. The partial results show the importance of establishing protocols for BIM modeling, based on IFC as an important tool for automated assessment with code checking.

summary As digital design and fabrication are becoming increasingly prevalent, it is essential to consider how these technologies can be made more affordable and intuitively introduced to individual designers with limited computing skills. In this paper, we present an affordable personal robotic fabrication platform, PICA, consisting of a 3D printed robotic arm with a set of controller programs. The platform allows designers with limited computational design skills to assemble motors and 3D printed parts easily and to operate it in a code-free environment with direct manipulation through 3D modeling software. With the real-time communication between 3D modeling software and this robotic fabrication platform, PICA also allows designers to efficiently change the topological properties of geometry during the fabrication process. Based on a comparative observation of several application scenarios of using PICA among two groups of architecture students, the research can be summarized as follows: 1.) The project has proved to be an affordable approach to ease the materializing process when converting a designer's initial intent from digital space to a physical prototype. 2.) Designers could be facilitated by utilizing this robotic fabrication platform, especially during the period of conceptual design.

summary Even though interactive (Offermans et.al., 2013), adaptive (Viani et.al., 2017), and self-optimizable (Sun et.al., 2020) lighting systems are becoming readily available, designing system automations, and evaluating their impact on user experience significantly challenges designers. In this paper we demonstrate the use of a gaming engine as a platform for designing, simulating, and evaluating autonomous smart lighting behaviors. We establish the Human - Lighting System Interaction Framework, a computational framework for developing a Light Sculpting Engine and for designing occupant-system interactions. Our results include a. a method for combining in real-time lighting IES profiles into a single ‘combined’ profile - b. algorithms that optimize in real-time, lighting configurations - c. direct glare elimination algorithms, and d. system energy use optimization algorithms. Overall, the evolution from designing static building components to designing interactive systems necessitates the reconsideration of methods and tools that allow user experience and system performance to be tuned by design.

summary Globally, the built environment is inequitable. And while construction automation is often heralded as the solution to labor shortages and the housing crisis, such methods tend to focus on technology, neglecting the wider socioeconomic contexts. Automated Architecture (AUAR), a spinoff of AUAR Labs at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, asserts that a values-centered, decentralized approach to automation centered around local communities can begin to address this material hegemony. The paper introduces and discusses AUAR’s platform-based framework, Discrete Automation, which subverts the status quo of automation that excludes those who are already disadvantaged into an inclusive network capable of providing solutions to both the automation gap and the assembly problem. Through both the wider context of existing modular housing platforms and issues of the current use of automated technologies in architectural production, Discrete Automation is discussed through the example of Block Type A, a discrete timber building system, which in conjunction with its combinatorial app constitutes the base of a community-led housing platform developed by AUAR. Built case studies are introduced alongside a discussion of the applied methodologies and an outlook on the platform’s potential for scalability in an equitable, sustainable manner.

summary Forms in nature have been emerging in response to different requirements, in a complex and dynamic ecosystem. Architects and designers have usually used references from nature for their projects; in industrial design education, the use of nature’s referents allows to expand the morphological possibilities for product design and systems. In this paper, a methodological proposal for the abstraction and morphological transformation of nature’s patterns is presented, highlighting the advantages of parametric design and additive manufacturing technologies for morphological experimentation, in the context of the first application case of morphology research subject in the Industrial Design program at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana.

summary A renewed interest in stereotomy, narrowly entwined with digital technologies, has allowed for the recovery and proposal of new techniques and expressions in this building approach. A new classification scheme for stereotomy research allows for the framing of various aspects related to this discipline, including a newly developed fabrication system specially tailored for the wedge-shaped voussoirs. This fabrication system is based in a reusable mould which may assume an infinite number of geometries, avoiding the wasteful discarding of material found in subtractive strategies. The usage of a mould also allows for more sustainable materials to be employed, catering to current challenges. The strategies subject for demonstration in this project rely on various bottom-up approaches, which involve particle physic simulations such as a hanging model to compute an optimal stereo-funicular shape, or spring mechanisms to find optimal coplanar solutions. The proposed mechanisms work in a parametric algorithmically environment, able to handle dozens of uniquely different voussoirs at the same time. Together with the automatic translation to fabrication data, the proposed shape complexity would hardly be built with classic tools. The Tamandua Vault project has the purpose of exemplifying the possibilities of an updated stereotomy, while its design demonstrates current strategies that may be employed in the resolution of complex geometrical problems and bespoke fabrication of construction components for stereotomy.

summary This paper addresses the development of parametric components based on BIM (Building Information Modeling) tools and their application for the teaching of architecture and urban designs, in a discipline focused on housing typology. As a didactic and research method, the use of industrialized building technologies in steel and precast concrete for production efficiency and low maintenance is associated with the idea of the studio as a laboratory for verification and experimentation. The system was improved for two years, and provided students with greater constructive control, basic feedback on the budget, and mastery of representation, while they investigated alternative design concepts and new components.

summary In architectural design, evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithms (EMOA) have found use in numerous practical applications in which qualitative and quantitative aspects can be transformed into fitness functions to be optimized. This paper shows that they can be used in an architectural plan design process that starts from a more traditional approach. The benchmark case uses a novel construction system, called Ac.Ca. Building, with a vast architectural and technological database, arleady validated, to generate architectural plan for a residential towerbuilding with a parametric approach and EMOA. The proposed framework differs from past research because uses spatial units with high level of architectural and tecnological definition.

summary In the scope of Industry 4.0, a framework is proposed to leverage the potential of articulating Augmented Reality and Robotic Manufacturing in the construction industry. The objective of such framework is to enable robots to learn how to perform tasks using direct interaction with human operators. As a first step, we established a connection between a robot and its trainer— or controller—in which the robot mirrors the operator’s actions. Augmented Reality hardware is used for capturing the trainer’s gestures and the surrounding environment. A digital tool was implemented using Grasshopper and additional plugins to control the process.

summary Driven by the ecological crisis looming over the 21st century, the construction sector must urgently seek alternative design solutions to current building practices. In the wake of emergent digital technologies and novel material strategies, this research proposes a lightweight architectural solution using natural fiber-reinforced polymers (NFRP), which elicit interest for their inherent renewability as compared to high-performance yarns. Two associated fabrication techniques are deployed: tailored fiber placement (TFP) and coreless filament winding (CFW), both favored for their additive efficiencies granted by strategic material placement. A hypothesis is formed, postulating that their combination can leverage the standalone complexities of molds and frames by integrating them as active structural elements. Consequently, the TFP enables the creation of a 2D stiffness-controlled preform to be bent into a permanent scaffold for winding rigid 3D fiber bodies via CFW. A proof of concept is generated via the small-scale prototyping and testing of a stool, with results yielding a design of 1 kg capable of carrying 100 times its weight. Laying the groundwork for a scaled-up architectural proposal, the prototype instigates alterations to the process, most notably the favoring of a modular global design and lapped preform technique. The research concludes with a discussion on the resulting techno-implications for automation, deployment, material life cycle, and aesthetics, rekindling optimism towards future sustainable practices.

summary The project presented in this paper is part of a research project that investigates the reuse of waste cardboard as a building material for low-cost housing. The study combines craft-based production and digital-based tools. It implements a shape grammar formalism as a tool for structuring the design of a modular, customized house, including the generation of fabrication instructions for some building parts. In this paper, we present an implementation of the grammar for designing the floor plan of a single-story house.

summary This paper proposes instruments from the sustainable development framework for the construction of a sustainable product design undergraduated program guide. The methodology used was mixed: surveys, both quantitative and qualitative, focus groups and semi-structured virtual interviews were carried out. Information on the state of the art was collected and later served as input for the construction of the guide. The results showed a concern about the lack of academic spaces to train with skills and conscience about the topic. Likewise, these allowed the construction of this guide, where knowledge that promotes more sustainable consumption and production could be imparted.

summary This paper explores and reflects on an integrative computational design thinking approach, which requires the melding of computation, design and theory as a conceptual framework, to be implemented in architectural education. Until now, digital design education is typically based on the introduction of digital tools and plugins at university courses and the subsequent application of these tools to design tasks of limited architectural complexity. At this time, technological advancement has not been matched by a comparable advancement in computational design thinking. The paper describes in detail a novel conceptual framework for course setup that illustrates the using of computational design as a manner of thinking in patterns of interaction across various scales, reaching from building design to regional planning. This approach was subsequently tested in a series of master-level studios, the results of which will be presented as case studies in this paper.

summary This project presents a Realtime Architecture Platform applied in a telepresence design studio to design and construct the CollabWood prototype. The platform, developed by the authors, enables an open workflow to collaborate and design in unity. It provides a persistent online environment for real-time architectural production. The work method is based on the concept of collaborative objects and distributed designers. These collaborative objects are the shared content: discrete parts, prefabs, or blocks that enable interaction, communication, and collaboration between its users and owners. The distributed designers can contribute by instantiating these collaborative objects. Users placing an object react to the local neighboring conditions and therefore add their embodied design decision to the global architecture. The users get immersed in digital proximity by communicating through the integrated chat or digital calls, discussing strategies, debating design intentions, analyzing the built structure, and scanning for improvements. This pervasive collaboration lays the foundation for a democratization of the design process. As a proof of concept, this method was implemented with 20 students in a telepresence design studio. The participants embraced the real-time workflow and applied the collaborative tool throughout the semester from different locations and time zones. Using the platform to design the CollabWood prototype in real-time collaboratively was realized as a 1:1 project with local, accessible material and AR technology for assembly. The global pandemic accelerated the importance of collaboration. Realtime Architecture Platform’s response of providing an accessible common platform for real-time interaction, design, and collaboration can be regarded as a first step towards how we might work together in the future.
