summary To achieve Sustainable Development Goals, in addition to the switch to sustainable energy sources and energy-efficient buildings, transport offers a major lever for reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gases. The increasing demand for emission-free mobility (e.g. through electromobility) but also heat pumps has a direct impact on the electricity consumption of buildings and settlements. It is still difficult to simulate the effects and interactions of different measures as sector coupling concepts require comprehensible tools for ex ante evaluation of planning measures at the community level and the linking of domain-specific models (energy, transport). Using the municipality of Bruck an der Leitha (Austria) as an example, a digital twin based on an open data model (Bednar et al., 2020) is created for the development of methods, which can be used to simulate measures to improve the settlement structure within the municipality. Forecast models for mobility (Schmaus, 2019; Ritz, 2019) and the building stock are developed or applied and linked via the open data model to be able to run through development scenarios and variants. The forecasting and visualisation options created in the project form the basis for the ex-ante evaluation of measures and policies on the way to a Positive-Energy-District. By identifying and collecting missing data, data gaps are filled for the simulation of precise models in the specific study area. A digital, interactive 3D model is created to examine the forecast results and the different scenarios.

summary This paper investigates an interactive and adaptive control system for kinetic architectural applications with a distributed sensing and actuation network to control modular fiber-reinforced composite components. The aim of the project was to control the actuation of a foldable lightweight structure to generate programmatic changes. A server parses input commands and geometric feedback from embedded sensors and online data to drive physical actuation and generate a digital twin for real-time monitoring. Physical components are origami-like folding plates of glass and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, developed in parallel research. Accelerometer data is analyzed to determine component geometry. A component controller drives actuators to maintain or move towards desired positions. Touch sensors embedded within the material allow direct control, and an online user interface provides high-level kinematic goals to the system. A hierarchical control system parses various inputs and determines actuation based on safety protocols and prioritization algorithms. Development includes hardware and software to enable modular expansion. This research demonstrates strategies for embedded networks in interactive kinematic structures and opens the door for deeper investigations such as artificial intelligence in control algorithms, material computation, as well as real-time modeling and simulation of structural systems.

title Generating architectural plan with evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithms: a benchmark case with an existent construction system

summary In architectural design, evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithms (EMOA) have found use in numerous practical applications in which qualitative and quantitative aspects can be transformed into fitness functions to be optimized. This paper shows that they can be used in an architectural plan design process that starts from a more traditional approach. The benchmark case uses a novel construction system, called Ac.Ca. Building, with a vast architectural and technological database, arleady validated, to generate architectural plan for a residential towerbuilding with a parametric approach and EMOA. The proposed framework differs from past research because uses spatial units with high level of architectural and tecnological definition.

summary The construction industry is a major source of carbon, and the main culprit is concrete. In addition, productivity for the construction sector is poor, and concrete construction in particular is labour intensive, slow, and costly. This paper introduces ongoing research addressing these two fundamental issues. First, by developing an integrated framework for automating manufacturing of reinforced concrete building elements through computation and robotic technology, and second by adapting such framework to the specific technical and socio- economic contexts of Colombian construction, specifically for social housing.

summary This paper proposes a Reinforcement Learning (RL) based design approach that augments existing algorithmic generative processes through the emergence of a form of artificial design intuition. The research presented in the paper is embedded within a highly speculative research project, Artificial Agency, exploring the operation of Machine Learning (ML) in generative design and digital fabrication. After describing the inherent limitations of contemporary generative design processes, the paper compares the three fundamental types of machine learning frameworks in terms of their characteristics and potential impact on generative design. A theoretical framework is defined to demonstrate the methodology of integrating RL with existing generative design procedures, which is further explained with a Random Walk based experimental design example. The paper includes detailed RL definitions as well as critical reflections on its impact and the effects of its implementation. The proposed artificial intuition within this generative approach is currently being further developed through a series of ongoing and proposed research trajectories noted in the conclusion. The ambition of this research is to deepen the integration of intention with machine learning in generative design.

summary Data-driven Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology has brought new tools to efficiently deal with the tension between the real and the virtual environments in the field of Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operation (AECO). For historic assets, BIM represents a paradigm shift, enabling better decision-making about preventive maintenance, heritage management, and interpretation. The potential application of the Historic-BIM is creating a digital twin of the asset. This paper deals with the concept of a virtual environment for the consolidation and dissemination of heritage information. Here we show the process of creating interactive virtual environments for the Pampulha Modern Ensemble designed by Oscar Niemeyer in the 1940s, and the workflow to their dissemination in an AR visualization APP. Our results demonstrate the APP feasibility to the Pampulha's building interpretation.

summary Social indicators are fundamental tools for measuring social facts, and their use has the potential to facilitate broad access to information. In 2020, the World experienced the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic, which impacted the socio-spatial reality of cities around the world in several aspects and deepened social inequalities. As part of a coping Covid-19 project by ArqPET, the Somar Platform, this paper presents a mapping process of the spread of Covid-19 in Fortaleza during the four months after its arrival. The mapping, which aims to inform public policies and provides documents that support the demand for adequate housing and sanitary infrastructure in the neglected spaces of the city, relates the spread of the virus to social indicators and uses database technology to optimize its productions.

summary Healthcare design practice has shown increasing interest in the assessment of design alternatives from a human-centered approach, focusing on organizational performance, patient health, and wellness outcomes, in addition to building performance. The goal of this research is to advance building analytics by identifying, defining and implementing computational human-centered design metrics. The knowledge is extracted from an exhaustive literature review in the field of evidence-based design (EBD), which has studied the associations between building features and the occupants’ outcomes but has not yet consolidated the findings into metrics and implications for design practice in a systematic manner. In consultation with industry experts, we have prioritized the evaluation aspects and developed a weighted evaluation framework for assessment of various design options. The developed metrics that input building parameters and output potential health and performance outcomes are implemented in a a parametric environment utilizing add-ons accordingly, and using an ambulatory clinic designed by Perkins&Will as a case study.

summary Waning of vigorous discourses about the idea of space as essence in architectural design concurred with the emergence of digital architecture. The notion of space was replaced with the underlying notion of form facilitating optimization of performances and form-generation in digital design ever since. Within the context of digital architecture, the current research investigates a formal method to reintroduce spatial aspects, based on dynamics of architectural space in relation to form, into digital design processes. Accordingly, a computational framework is devised employing the idea of space as dynamic field conditions, in order to capture dynamic interrelation of architectural space with architectural form. That is, spatial dynamics are regarded as data embedded in architectural space, that can imply operational aspects of spatial experiences and / or stimulate corporeal engagements with experiential space, as concepts as action potentials and affordances do (Rasmussen 1964). As a result, the research aims to contribute to the body of knowledge that endeavour to systematize architectural sensibilities that are implicit in design processes by externalization utilizing computation.

summary In recent years, digital fabrication projects have explored how to best present complex spatial patterns. These patterns are generated by a series of function clusters and need to be separated into reasonable working sequences for workers. In the stage between design and fabrication, designers and workers typically spend considerable time communicating with each other and prototyping models in order to understand the complex geometry and joint methods of fabrication works. Through the potential of mixed reality technology, this paper proposes a novel form of co-existing interactive workflow that helps designers understand the morphing status of material composition and assists workers in achieving desired results. We establish this co-existing workflow mechanism as an interface between design and reality that includes a HoloLens display, a parametric algorithm, and gesture control identification. This paper challenges the flexibility between the virtual and reality and the interaction between precise parameters and natural gestures within an automation process.

summary This study investigates the technological and methodological challenges in establishing an indeterministic approach to robotic fabrication that allows for a collaborative and creative design/fabrication process. The research objective enquires into how robotic processes in architecture can move from deterministic fabrication processes towards explorative and indeterministic design processes. To address this research objective, the study specifically explores how an architect and a robot can engage in a process of co-creation and co-evolution, that is enabled by a collaborative robotic arm equipped with an electric gripper and a web camera. Through a case-based experiment, of designing and constructing an adjustable façade system consisting of parallel wood lamellas, designer and robotic system co-create by means of interactive processes. The study will present and discuss the technological implementations used to construct the interactive robotic-based design process, with emphasis on the integration of visual analysis features in Grasshopper and on the benefits of establishing a state machine for interactive and creative robotic control in architecture.

summary Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecologies in the marine world. They are the habitat to tens of thousands of different marine species. However, these wildlife environments are endangered across the globe. Recent research estimates that around 75 percent of the remaining coral reefs are currently under threat. In 2018 after a devastating storm, Hong Kong lost around 80% of its existing corals. Consequently, a team consisting of marine biologists and architects at The University of Hong Kong has developed a series of performative structures that have been deployed in the city's waters in July 2020, intending to aid new coral growth over the coming years. The project was commissioned by the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department (AFCD) and is part of an ongoing active management measure for coral restoration in Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park in Hong Kong. The following objectives were defined as part of the design and fabrication research of the project. To develop a design strategy that builds on the concept of biomimicry to allow for complex spaces to occur that would provide attributes against the detachment of the inserted coral fragment, hence could enhance a diverse marine life specific to the context of the cities water conditions. To generate an efficient printing path that accommodates the specific morphological design criteria and ensures structural integrity and the functional aspects of the design. To develop an efficient fabrication process with a DIW 3D printing methodology that considers warping, shrinkage, and cracking in the clay material. The research team developed a method that combined an algorithmic design approach for the design of different geometries with a digital additive manufacturing process utilizing robotic 3D clay printing. The overall fabrication strategy for the complex and large pieces sought to ensure structural longevity, optimize production time, and tackle the involved double-sided printing method. Overall, 128 tiles were printed, covering roughly 40sqm of the seabed.

summary This paper presents an holistic approach to the digital design and fabrication of fungi- and algae-based biopolymers, based on studies and simulations of material properties and post-fabrication behavior. The research is motivated by the problem of plastic waste, the need to create more sustainable manufacturing processes, and the opportunity for material composition and organization to be informed by performance, leading to homogenous, complex and integral architectural elements for temporary architecture of agricultural shading systems. The paper details design and specification methods for functionally graded biopolymer panels, as well as fabrication methods through the making of prototypical built elements. The research details parallel trajectories of: material exploration made out of renewable and biodegradable resources available and abundant in every habitat on the earth; advancement in tools and methods for in-situ robotic additive manufacturing of viscous bio-polymers; development of the strategy for functional grading of the material properties to optimize site specificity and material distribution, and to reduce building material waste. It presents comparative material characterizations, an integrated simulation-based approach to support the process of programming localized performance, and architectural application tested via full-scale prototypes.

summary Considering the energy effi ciency and comfort levels of dwellings, stricter legislation will be applied towards 2020. To reach these requirements, an insight into the energy effi ciency becomes essential from the start of a design. However, the uptake of building simulation tools by architects and students to evaluate the energy performance during the architectural design process remains very limited, mainly due to the complexity of these tools. Therefore, this research aims at early design support through an easy-to-use application adapted to the modelling logic of a designer. As architects often use simple CAAD design tools for design exploration, a prototype was established in Google SketchUp. In this context, the paper presents the development of a support tool for low-energy dwellings in early design phases, allowing designers to quickly assess the thermal comfort and energy performance of early design alternatives.

title Motivation-Based Performance Design in Early Predicted Building Water Use

summary There is a lack of impactful tools or guidance for assessing water consumption or where there can be considerable savings from water capture. While there are many online calculators, spreadsheets, and models for considering predicted building water use, none of them introduce learning through motivation in the process. Gamification has been recognized in the literature to support motivation using design elements to promote behavior change and performance to a specific activity. The authors propose the use of simple design elements within an modified building performance methodology that can drive awareness and inform the decision-making process relative to the program.

summary This project proposes to implement space group symmetries as a novel descriptive framework for architectural assemblies. To date there is scant examination within architectural computation of this system used to describe the 230 unique configurations of symmetry elements and operations repeating in three dimensions. This research changes this by developing HORTA, a component library for the application of the space groups within Grasshopper. This ongoing project builds a language of arrangement and connectivity from the unambiguous spatial logic and descriptive efficiency of the space groups. This is particularly useful in defining forms for digital fabrication and autonomous assembly at the scale of a material subunit—broadly defined as “bricks.” However, it is not limited to this—HORTA has potential for application across scales, wherever control of repetition and combination with a minimal instruction set is useful. The result is not a tool for a singular design process or specific formal outcomes, but a new system for describing aggregations that inherently balance novelty and predictability. With HORTA, aggregations can be proposed that are composed of a finite but scalable number of possible subunits. Inherently symmetrical, any increase in complexity is realized as an increase in rotations and frequencies of similar subunits rather than an increase in unique unit variants. HORTA theorizes that this previously underexplored area of computation can open sophistication not just in forms but in the description of aggregations with minimal instruction sets, resulting in new methods for the calculation and fabrication of architecture.

title Digital soil: Robotically 3D-printed granular bio-composites

summary Organic granular materials offer a valid alternative for non-biodegradable composites widely adopted in building construction and digital fabrication. Despite the need to find alternatives to fuel-based solutions, current material research in architecture mostly supports strategies that favour predictable, durable and homogeneous solutions. Materials such as soil, due to their physical properties and volatile nature, present new challenges and potentials to change the way we manufacture, built and integrate material systems and environmental factors into the design process. This article proposes a novel fabrication framework that combines high-resolution three-dimensional- printed biodegradable materials with a novel robotic-additive manufacturing process for soil structures. Furthermore, the research reflects on concepts such as affordance and tolerance within the field of digital fabrication, especially in regards to bio-materials and robotic fabrication. Soil as a building material has a long tradition. New developments in earth construction show how earthen buildings can create novel, adaptive and sustainable structures. Nevertheless, existing large-scale earthen construction methods can only produce highly simplified shapes with rough geometrical articulations. This research proposes to use a robotic binder-jetting process that creates novel organic bio-composites to overcome such limitations of common earth constructions. In addition, this article shows how biological polymers, such as polysaccharides-based hydrogels, can be used as sustainable, biodegradable binding agents for soil aggregates. This article is divided into four main sections: architecture and affordance; tolerance versus precision; water-based binders; and robotic fabrication parameters. Digital Soil envisions a shift in the design practice and digital fabrication that builds on methods for tolerance handling. In this context, material and geometrical properties such as material porosity, hydraulic conductivity and natural evaporation rate affect the architectural resolution, introducing a design process driven by matter. Digital Soil shows the potential of a fully reversible biodegradable manufacturing process for load-bearing architectural elements, opening up new fields of application for sustainable material systems that can enhance the ecological potential of architectural construction.

summary Ubiquitous computing enables us to decipher the biosphere’s anthropogenic dimension, what we call the Urbansphere (Pasquero and Poletto 2020). This machinic perspective unveils a new postanthropocentric reality, where the impact of artificial systems on the natural biosphere is indeed global, but their agency is no longer entirely human. This paper explores a protocol to design the Urbansphere, or what we may call the urbanization of the nonhuman, titled DeepGreen. With the development of DeepGreen, we are testing the potential to bring the interdependence of digital and biological intelligence to the core of architectural and urban design research. This is achieved by developing a new biocomputational design workflow that enables the pairing of what is algorithmically drawn with what is biologically grown (Pasquero and Poletto 2016). In other words, and more in detail, the paper will illustrate how generative adversarial network (GAN) algorithms (Radford, Metz, and Soumith 2015) can be trained to “behave” like a Physarum polycephalum, a unicellular organism endowed with surprising computational abilities and self-organizing behaviors that have made it popular among scientist and engineers alike (Adamatzky 2010) (Fig. 1). The trained GAN_Physarum is deployed as an urban design technique to test the potential of polycephalum intelligence in solving problems of urban remetabolization and in computing scenarios of urban morphogenesis within a nonhuman conceptual framework.

summary This paper addresses the use of BIM for code verification and automatic validation of the Architectural Design of Airports (ADA). In Brazil, the evaluation and approval of ADA are carried out by INFRAERO. Currently, designs are evaluated manually, resulting in errors and long evaluation time. To deal with this problem, a conceptual framework for automated ADA assessment with Code Checking is proposed. The method used was Design Science Research, with the proposal of an artifact. The partial results show the importance of establishing protocols for BIM modeling, based on IFC as an important tool for automated assessment with code checking.
