summary Can a virtual city game be built by both the public and computer-based on real-site data? In the current process of deepening global connectivity, requirements for an effective urban design are no longer limited to functions or aesthetics, but a smart, dynamic complex with multi-interactions of data, group behaviours, and physical space. This paper introduces the logic of swarm intelligence and particle system for proposing a new urban design methodology. The platforms range from simulations that quantify the impact of the disruptive interventions of city activities to communicable collaboration between different users in a UI system, which creates virtual connections between optimized urbanscape and users. In the design system, based on the context data, the computer firstly simulates and optimizes the existing 2D activity joints between the people and analyzed the current spatial connection nodes into certain design rules. Through optimal programming for spatial connection and data iterations, the activity connection structures in the second simulation are abstracted into a set of interactive 3D topographic. The final data-visualization results are presented as a co-building megacity in a virtual construction game. Users can choose the virtual building unit types and intuitively influence the future urbanscape decision through virtual construction.

title Machine learning in the discipline of architecture: A review on the research trends between 2014 and 2020

summary Abstract Through the recent technological developments within the fourth industrial revolution, artificial intelligence (AI) studies have had a huge impact on various disciplines such as social sciences, information communication technologies (ICTs), architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). Regarding decision-making and forecasting systems in particular, AI and machine learning (ML) technologies have provided an opportunity to improve the mutual relationships between machines and humans. When the connection between ML and architecture is considered, it is possible to claim that there is no parallel acceleration as in other disciplines. In this study, and considering the latest breakthroughs, we focus on revealing what ML and architecture have in common. Our focal point is to reveal common points by classifying and analyzing current literature through describing the potential of ML in architecture. Studies conducted using ML techniques and subsets of AI technologies were used in this paper, and the resulting data were interpreted using the bibliometric analysis method. In order to discuss the state-of-the-art research articles which have been published between 2014 and 2020, main subjects, subsets, and keywords were refined through the search engines. The statistical figures were demonstrated as huge datasets, and the results were clearly delineated through Sankey diagrams. Thanks to bibliometric analyses of the current literature of WOS (Web of Science), CUMINCAD (Cumulative Index about publications in Computer Aided Architectural Design supported by the sibling associations ACADIA, CAADRIA, eCAADe, SIGraDi, ASCAAD, and CAAD futures), predictable data have been presented allowing recommendations for possible future studies for researchers.

title CoBuilt 4.0: Investigating the potential of collaborative robotics for subject matter experts

summary Human-robot interactions can offer alternatives and new pathways for construction industries, industrial growth and skilled labour, particularly in a context of industry 4.0. This research investigates the potential of collaborative robots (CoBots) for the construction industry and subject matter experts; by surveying industry requirements and assessments of CoBot acceptance; by investing processes and sequences of work protocols for standard architecture robots; and by exploring motion capture and tracking systems for a collaborative framework between human and robot co-workers. The research investigates CoBots as a labour and collaborative resource for construction processes that require precision, adaptability and variability.Thus, this paper reports on a joint industry, government and academic research investigation in an Australian construction context. In section 1, we introduce background data to architecture robotics in the context of construction industries and reports on three sections. Section 2 reports on current industry applications and survey results from industry and trade feedback for the adoption of robots specifically to task complexity, perceived safety, and risk awareness. Section 3, as a result of research conducted in Section 2, introduces a pilot study for carpentry task sequences with capture of computable actions. Section 4 provides a discussion of results and preliminary findings. Section 5 concludes with an outlook on how the capture of computable actions provide the foundation to future research for capturing motion and machine learning.

summary Information extracted from aerial photographs is widely used in urban planning and design. An effective method for detecting buildings in aerial photographs is to use deep learning for understanding the current state of a target region. However, the building mask images used to train the deep learning model are manually generated in many cases. To solve this challenge, a method has been proposed for automatically generating mask images by using virtual reality 3D models for deep learning. Because normal virtual models do not have the realism of a photograph, it is difficult to obtain highly accurate detection results in the real world even if the images are used for deep learning training. Therefore, the objective of this research is to propose a method for automatically generating building mask images by using 3D models with textured aerial photographs for deep learning. The model trained on datasets generated by the proposed method could detect buildings in aerial photographs with an accuracy of IoU = 0.622. Work left for the future includes changing the size and type of mask images, training the model, and evaluating the accuracy of the trained model.

summary This paper presents research aimed at translating Ukiran Pasir Melela, traditional Balinese sand carving, into a new robotic-enabled framework for rapidly carving stiff but uncured cement sand blocks to create free-form and architecturally scalable unique volumetric elements. The research aims to reconsider vernacular materials and craft through their integration robotic manufacturing processes and how this activity can provide localized, low energy manufacturing solutions for building in the Anthropocene.Balinese sand carving shows potential advantages over current, and rather environmentally damaging, machining process primarily using soft materials state to make deep, smooth cuts into material with little torque. Transferring this manual and low-impact craft to robotic-enabled fabrication leverages heuristic knowledge developed over decades and opens possibilities for expanding and transforming these capabilities to increase the variability of potential future applications.

summary Smart Growth is an urban design movement initiated by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States (Smart Growth America, 2019). The regulations of Smart Growth control urban morphologies such as building height, use, position, section configurations, façade configurations, and materials, which have an explicit association with energy performances. This research aims to analyze and visualize the impact of Smart Growth developments on environmental performances. This paper presents a parametric modeling and simulation framework for Smart Growth developments that can model the potential community development scenarios, simulate the environmental footprints of each parcel, and visualize the results of modeling and simulation. We implemented and examined the proposed framework through a case study of two Smart Growth regulations: Columbia Unified Development Code (UDC) in Missouri (City of Columbia Missouri, 2017) and Overland Park Downtown Form-based Code (FBC) in Kansas City (City of Overland Park, 2017, 2019). Last, we discuss the implementation results, the limitations of the proposed framework, and the future work. We anticipate that the proposed method can improve stakeholders' understanding of how Smart Growth developments are associated with potential environmental footprints from an expeditious and thorough exploration of what-if scenarios of the multiple development schemes.

title The Age of Spiritual Machines: When Computers Exceed Human Intelligence

summary How much do we humans enjoy our current status as the most intelligent beings on earth? Enough to try to stop our own inventions from surpassing us in smarts? If so, we'd better pull the plug right now, because if Ray Kurzweil is right, we've only got until about 2020 before computers outpace the human brain in computational power. Kurzweil, artificial intelligence expert and author of The Age of Intelligent Machines, shows that technological evolution moves at an exponential pace. Further, he asserts, in a sort of swirling postulate, time speeds up as order increases, and vice versa. He calls this the "Law of Time and Chaos," and it means that although entropy is slowing the stream of time down for the universe overall, and thus vastly increasing the amount of time between major events, in the eddy of technological evolution the exact opposite is happening, and events will soon be coming faster and more furiously. This means that we'd better figure out how to deal with conscious machines as soon as possible--they'll soon not only be able to beat us at chess, they'll likely demand civil rights, and they may at last realize the very human dream of immortality. The Age of Spiritual Machines is compelling and accessible, and not necessarily best read from front to back--it's less heavily historical if you jump around (Kurzweil encourages this). Much of the content of the book lays the groundwork to justify Kurzweil's timeline, providing an engaging primer on the philosophical and technological ideas behind the study of consciousness. Instead of being a gee-whiz futurist manifesto, Spiritual Machines reads like a history of the future, without too much science fiction dystopianism. Instead, Kurzweil shows us the logical outgrowths of current trends, with all their attendant possibilities. This is the book we'll turn to when our computers

summary This paper provides a state-of-the-art of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the building industry. Two methods were used to find this new knowledge: a series of interviews with leading architecture, engineering, and software professionals; and a series of tests in which CFD software was evaluated using comparable criteria. The paper reports findings in technology, workflows, projects, current unmet needs, and future directions. In buildings, airflow is fundamental for heating and cooling, as well as occupant comfort and productivity. Despite its importance, the design of airflow systems is outside the realm of much of architectural design practice; but with advances in digital tools, it is now possible for architects to integrate air flow into their building design workflows (Peters and Peters 2018). As Chen (2009) states, “In order to regulate the indoor air parameters, it is essential to have suitable tools to predict ventilation performance in buildings.” By enabling scientific data to be conveyed in a visual process that provides useful analytical information to designers (Hartog and Koutamanis 2000), computer performance simulations have opened up new territories for design “by introducing environments in which we can manipulate and observe” (Kaijima et al. 2013). Beyond comfort and productivity, in recent months it has emerged that air flow may also be a matter of life and death. With the current global pandemic of SARS-CoV-2, it is indoor environments where infections most often happen (Qian et al. 2020). To design architecture in a post-COVID-19 environment will require an in-depth understanding of how air flows through space.

summary The R&D project ADAPTEX showcases a material-driven and computationally informed design approach to adaptive textile facades through the integration of shape memory alloy (SMA) as an actuator. The results exhibit thermally responsive and self-sufficient sun-shading solutions with innovative design potential that enhance the energy performance of the built environment. With regard to climate targets, an environmentally viable concept is proposed that reduces the energy required for climatization, is lightweight, and can function as a refurbishment system. Two concepts—ADAPTEX Wave and ADAPTEX Mesh—are being developed to be tested as full-scale demonstrators for facade deployment by an interdisciplinary team from architecture, textile design, facade engineering, and material research. The two concepts follow a material-driven, low-complexity design strategy and differ in type of kinetic movement, textile construction, integration of the SMA, reset force, and scale of permeability. In this paper, we describe the computational design process and tools to develop and design current and future prototypes and demonstrators, providing insights on the challenges and potentials of developing textiles with integrated shape memory alloys for architectural applications.

summary If we strive for a de-carbonized future, we need to think of buildings within a city as resources that can be re-used rather than being disposed of. Together with considerations on refurbishment options and future building materials, this gives a decision field for stakeholders which depends on the current "building stock" - the set of pre-existing buildings which are characterized e.g. by building period, location and material composition. Changes in that context are hard to argue for since (1.) some depend on statistics, other (2.) on the concrete neighborhood and thus the space in which buildings are embedded, yet again others on (3.) future extrapolations again dealing with both of the aforementioned environments. To date, there exists no tool that can handle this back-and-forth between different abstraction levels and horizons in time; nor is it possible to pursue such an endeavor without a proper framework. Which is why the authors of this paper are aiming to provide one, giving a model of change in the context of re-using material resource of the city, when faced with numerous abstraction levels (spatial or abstract; past, current or future) which have feedback loops between them. The paper focuses on a concrete case study in the city of Vienna, however, chances are high that this will apply to every other building stock throughout the world if enough data is available. As a matter of fact, this approach will ensure that argumentation can happen on multiple levels (spatial, statistical, past, now and future) but keeps its focus on making the building stock of a city a resource for sustainable development.

summary This paper presents findings of a survey conducted to assess students’ experiences within the online instruction stage of their architectural education during the lockdown period caused by the COVID-19 pandemic between March and June 2020. The study was conducted in two departments of architecture in both Cairo branches of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT), Egypt, with special focus on courses involving a CAAD component. The objective of this exploratory study was to understand students’ learning experiences within the online period, and to investigate challenges facing architectural education. A mixed methods study was used, where a questionnaire-based survey was developed to gather qualitative and quantitative data based on the opinions of a sample of students from both departments. Findings focus on the qualitative component to describe students’ experiences, with quantitative data used for triangulation purposes. Results underline students’ positive learning experiences and challenges faced. Insights regarding digital tool preferences were also revealed. Findings are not only significant in understanding an important event that caused remote architectural education in Egypt but may also serve as an important stepping-stone towards the future of design education in light of newly-introduced disruptive online learning technologies made necessary in response to lockdowns worldwide

title Solidarity through difference: Speculative participatory serious urban gaming (SPS-UG)

summary This article discusses the methodology and results of the Maslow’s Palace workshops project, which engages with current debates surrounding the democratisation of digital urban design technology and stakeholder decision making, through the implementation of a speculative oriented approach to serious gaming. The research explores how serious games might be used to help marginalised communities consider past, future and present community experiences, reconcile dissimilar assumptions, generate social capital building and design responses and prime participants for further long-term design engagement processes through a new approach called Speculative Participatory Serious Urban Gaming. Empirical material for this research was gathered from a range of case study workshops prepared with three landfill-based communities and external partners throughout 2017. Results show the approach helped participants develop shared norms, values and collective understandings of sensitive topics and develop ideas for future action through ‘collective tinkering.

summary Contemporary digital design and fabrication tools often present deterministic and pre-programmed workflows. This limits the potential for developing a deeper understanding of materials within the process. This paper presents an interactive and adaptive design-fabrication workflow where the user can actively take turns in the fabrication process. The proposed experimental setup utilizes paste extrusion additive manufacturing in tandem with real-time control of an industrial robotic arm. By incorporating a computer-vision based feedback loop, it captures momentary changes in the fabricated artifact introduced by the users to inform the digital representation. Using the updated digital representation, the proposed system can offer simple design hypotheses for the user to evaluate and adapt future toolpaths accordingly. This paper presents the development of the experimental setup and delineates critical concepts and their motivation.

summary OGOS+ is a GIS data-based tool, which would offer urban planners, architects, and researchers visualisations of potential building mass in the form of 3D models. It compares the height of existing buildings to the maximum permitted height by German zoning law and calculates the potential building mass. To ensure minimum building footprints it only calculates the densification potential on top of existing buildings. It summarises information of the building potential for future utilisation. The goal is an increase of urban density achieved with micro interventions.

summary The research developed in this paper is the workflow to create a self-supporting structure from sheet materials using robotic fabrication and computational tools. This research focuses on timber sheet materials, as timber is a material that can be altered in a variety of ways. Japanese timber connections were a strong influence for this research, due to its prolonged lifespan and sustainable advantages. In the past, timber fabrication techniques have been limited due to design limitations. This research explored how current technology, specifically parametric software combined with robotic fabrication, can create timber connections to connect sheet materials at different angles. This method was utilised to repurpose the concept of sheet materials towards a complex structure, which adopted the idea of mass customisation over mass production. This can help reshape the future of architecture through the use of advancing technology and sustainable assembly techniques using timber to timber joints.

In the wake of emergent digital technologies and novel material strategies, this research proposes a lightweight architectural solution using natural fiber-reinforced polymers (NFRP), which elicit interest for their inherent renewability as compared to high-performance yarns. Two associated fabrication techniques are deployed: tailored fiber placement (TFP) and coreless filament winding (CFW), both favored for their additive efficiencies granted by strategic material placement. A hypothesis is formed, postulating that their combination can leverage the standalone complexities of molds and frames by integrating them as active structural elements. Consequently, the TFP enables the creation of a 2D stiffness-controlled preform to be bent into a permanent scaffold for winding rigid 3D fiber bodies via CFW. A proof of concept is generated via the small-scale prototyping and testing of a stool, with results yielding a design of 1 kg capable of carrying 100 times its weight. Laying the groundwork for a scaled-up architectural proposal, the prototype instigates alterations to the process, most notably the favoring of a modular global design and lapped preform technique. The research concludes with a discussion on the resulting techno-implications for automation, deployment, material life cycle, and aesthetics, rekindling optimism towards future sustainable practices.

summary Non-structural or out-of-grade timber framing material contains a large proportion of visual and natural defects. A common strategy to recover usable material from these timbers is the marking and removing of defects, with the generated intermediate lengths of clear wood then joined into a single piece of fulllength structural timber. This paper presents a novel workflow that uses machine learning based image recognition and a computational decision-making algorithm to enhance the automation and efficiency of current defect identification and rejoining processes. The proposed workflow allows the knowledge of worker to be translated into a classifier that automatically recognizes and removes areas of defects based on image capture. In addition, a real-time optimization algorithm in decision making is developed to assign a joining sequence of fragmented timber from a dynamic inventory, creating a single piece of targeted length with a significant reduction in material waste. In addition to an industrial application, this workflow also allows for future inventory-constrained customizable fabrication, for example in production of non-standard architectural components or adaptive reuse or defect-avoidance in out-of-grade timber construction.

summary Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been proposed to be additional architectural design mediums for at least 25 years (Dagit, 1993). Despite rapid technical and technological development, it has not been adopted into architectural design practices as compared to academia and research. Surveys from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and Royal Institutes of British Architects (RIBA) demonstrate the state of architectural practices; 72% of architects and 65% of architects respectively are not using any kind of virtual, augmented, or mixed reality in their practices(RIBA and Microsoft, 2018; Hampson, 2020). In this paper, the authors investigate the state of practices, issues, challenges, and opportunities of the utilization of virtual, augmented, and mixed realities in six architectural practices in the Danish context. Three of the practices are large architectural practices, one medium-sized practice specializing in institutional, healthcare and cultural architecture, and one firm designing private family houses, kindergartens, daycares and places for people with disability and, one experimental design studio. All these practices have used VR/AR in their projects to various degrees. In recent years Danish architectural practices have been involved in various VR/AR-based exhibitions, demonstrations, and tool developments to promote the usage of the same in design practice. Through a set of qualitative interviews with personnel from key architectural practices, the authors would like to demonstrate the present state of practices. The investigation explores the usage of VR and AR in Danish architecture practices by identifying challenges and opportunities regarding skill levels, architectural typology, use cases, toolchains, and workflow and shows similarities and differences between traditional and VR-based design processes. The main findings show how VR/AR-based visualization helps architects to perceive spatiality and also ushers creativity through immersion and overlays.

summary The potential robotization of architecture, its fabrication and assembly impacts design education today. In the near future it will contribute to the emergence of the new forms of urbanization. Our design research is focusing on the small scale urban conditions and build fragments that make up intelligent city. It is undertaken by the multidisciplinary team of architects and mechatronics engineers in academic context. The ROBOtown is understood as an urban structure containing intelligent town fragments. It has to consider the participatory design process involving architecture, mechatronic, robotics and lessons derived from Industry 4.0.

summary This research project is about valuing the interdisciplinarity of architecture, using sources from different areas, from fiction and from the imaginary, but which are consistent with the discussions of production and criticism of current architecture. The article is based on the analysis of two short stories, one by the author Ray Bradbury and the other by the author PhilipK. Dick as guiding the parallels made with the historiographic theoretical field and the current context, in order to relate the themes and leave gaps for future discussions and possible future alternatives through architecture.
