summary Application of Machine Learning (ML) in the field of architecture is a worthwhile topic to discuss in the context of digital architecture. Authors propose to extend this discussion, presenting an integrated ML pipeline built with the state-of-the-art data science tools. To investigate the affordances of such pipelines, an ML model being able to predict the environmental metrics of a generalized facade system is created. This approach is valid for arbitrary facades, as long as the proposed design could be discretized in the form analogous to the data generated for the ML model training. The presented experiment evaluates the precision of the sunlight hours and radiation values predictions, aiming at the application in the early design phases. Conducted investigation builds up on the knowledge embedded in the Grasshopper and Ladybug toolsets. Potential application of Convolutional Neural Networks and categorical datasets for classifications tasks to increase the precision of the ML models have been identified. Possibility to extend the approach beyond the workspace of Rhino and Grasshopper is suggested. Further research outlook, investigating the data pattern recognition capabilities in relation to the three-dimensional forms discretized as multidimensional arrays, is stated.

title Machine learning in the discipline of architecture: A review on the research trends between 2014 and 2020
source International Journal of Architectural Computing 2023, Vol. 21 - no. 1, pp. 23–41
summary Abstract Through the recent technological developments within the fourth industrial revolution, artificial intelligence (AI) studies have had a huge impact on various disciplines such as social sciences, information communication technologies (ICTs), architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). Regarding decision-making and forecasting systems in particular, AI and machine learning (ML) technologies have provided an opportunity to improve the mutual relationships between machines and humans. When the connection between ML and architecture is considered, it is possible to claim that there is no parallel acceleration as in other disciplines. In this study, and considering the latest breakthroughs, we focus on revealing what ML and architecture have in common. Our focal point is to reveal common points by classifying and analyzing current literature through describing the potential of ML in architecture. Studies conducted using ML techniques and subsets of AI technologies were used in this paper, and the resulting data were interpreted using the bibliometric analysis method. In order to discuss the state-of-the-art research articles which have been published between 2014 and 2020, main subjects, subsets, and keywords were refined through the search engines. The statistical figures were demonstrated as huge datasets, and the results were clearly delineated through Sankey diagrams. Thanks to bibliometric analyses of the current literature of WOS (Web of Science), CUMINCAD (Cumulative Index about publications in Computer Aided Architectural Design supported by the sibling associations ACADIA, CAADRIA, eCAADe, SIGraDi, ASCAAD, and CAAD futures), predictable data have been presented allowing recommendations for possible future studies for researchers.

title Recipes for Waste-Tooling: Using Food Waste in Design
source SIGraDi 2020 [Proceedings of the 24th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISSN: 2318-6968] Online Conference 18 - 20 November 2020, pp. 962-967
summary In this research, we propose an alternate consumption cycle in which the traditional landfill waste disposal model is averted by developing design objects that are fabricated with household biowaste materials. Food decomposition in landfills not only wastes the energy and emissions input into the original production process, but also releases methane. By rerouting this waste for secondary use as novel design objects and tools, in this research we seek to prevent some amounts of household biowaste from reaching landfills. This process, that we call waste-tooling, repurposes food waste to make kitchen tools by employing different fabrication strategies.

title Parametric Modelling and Simulation of an Indoor Temperature Responsive Rotational Shading System Design
source D. Holzer, W. Nakapan, A. Globa, I. Koh (eds.), RE: Anthropocene, Design in the Age of Humans - Proceedings of the 25th CAADRIA Conference - Volume 1, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, 5-6 August 2020, pp. 579-588
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2020.1.579
summary We present a digital design strategy for developing an intelligent rotational shading system responsive to changes in indoor temperatures. The strategy was first modelled with an Arduino-based physical prototype, identifying the concept of "mapping" between building indoor air temperature and rotational movement (angle) of external solar shading. A virtual parametric modelling approach was then followed to test three methods of mapping: linear, quadratic and logarithmic. The aim was to examine the performative differences exhibited by the three mapping methods in terms of the total comfort hours and estimated cooling energy demand during summer months. A typical cellular office in the Arts Tower of University of Sheffield was chosen for the parametric modelling (Rhino-Grasshopper) and environmental simulation (Honeybee-Ladybug) of horizontal and vertical rotational shading system design. The simulation shows that the horizontal shading system rotating according to the linear mapping methods achieve greater total comfort hours with lower cooling energy demand in the case of Arts Tower in Sheffield, UK.

summary Spatial productivity is the first of the elements comprising sensMOD, a student elective that implemented a methodology addressing the exigent need of our time for transformation in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sector. The second and third elements of sensMOD are parts and interaction which focus attention on the nature of complexity and connectivity in our networked world. The paper proposes a methodology that was used to guide the teaching of an elective for third year architecture students at a UK university. Its wider purpose is to contribute to discussion concerning the dysfunctional state of an AEC sector that needs to consider its productivity as projections of wider networks of resource and energy relationships. Henri Lefebvre's spatial theory (1991) guides the narrative and formulation of sensMOD.

summary Building energy modelling (BEM) results are highly affected by the surrounding environment, due to the impact of solar radiation on the site. Hence, modelling the context is a crucial step in the design process. This is challenging when access to the geometrical data of the built and natural environment is unavailable as in remote villages. The acquisition of accurate data through conventional surveying proves to be costly and time consuming, especially in areas with a steep and complex terrain. Photogrammetry using drone-captured aerial images has emerged as an innovative solution to facilitate surveying and modeling. Nevertheless, the workflow of translating the photogrammetry output from data points to surfaces readable by BEM tools proves to be tedious and unclear. This paper presents a streamlined and reproducible approach for constructing accurate building models from photogrammetric data points to use for architectural design and energy analysis in early design stage projects.

title Urban strategy playground: Rethinking the urban planner’s toolbox
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 18 - no. 1, 20-40
summary This article presents the results of the Urban Strategy Playground research group. Over the last 5 years, the focus of an interdisciplinary team of researchers was the conception, implementation and evaluation of a decision-support system for inner-city urban and architectural planning. The overall aim of past and ongoing research is to enable planners to validate and compare possible planning measures based on objective criteria. The Urban Strategy Playground software framework is an expandable toolbox that supports planners in developing strategies, evaluating them and visually preparing them for political decision-making processes and public participation. Examples of implemented tools are the simulation and monitoring of building codes, analysis of key density indicators and green space provision, simulation of shading, building energy and noise dispersion. For visualising the planning results, the framework provides interfaces for rapid prototyping of haptic models, as well as web viewers and a connection to Augmented Reality applications. Core aspects of the system were evaluated through case studies in cooperation with urban planning offices, housing companies and municipalities, proving feasibility, high acceptance of the decision-support software, and need for more tailored tools.

title Influence of Uncertainties in Envelope and Occupant Parameters on the Reliability of Energy-Based Form Optimization of Office Buildings
source D. Holzer, W. Nakapan, A. Globa, I. Koh (eds.), RE: Anthropocene, Design in the Age of Humans - Proceedings of the 25th CAADRIA Conference - Volume 1, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, 5-6 August 2020, pp. 497-506

summary Building performance optimization is effective in finding optimal designs and improving building energy efficiency, but its reliability can be affected by uncertainties in input parameters. This paper conducts a reliability analysis on energy-based form optimization of office buildings under uncertainties in envelope and occupancy parameters. An optimization process involving Rhinoceros, EnergyPlus and genetic algorithms is first implemented. Then parametric studies of 644 scenarios involving 4 cities in different climates and 3 form variables are conducted. The results indicate that uncertainties in input parameters could lead to major unreliability of optimization results, including reductions up to 13% in energy saving achieved by optimization and descents up to 10% in energy efficiency compared with results before optimization. Moreover, the uncertainty in visual transmittance of windows is the most significant cause for the unreliability, followed by U-value of walls, while the uncertainty in occupant density and occupant schedule has limited influence. The results can help designers understand the uncertainty of which parameters should be controlled and to what extend optimization results can be trusted in various scenarios.

summary This paper presents an analysis of the output, impact, use and content of 1,860 papers that were published in the CAADRIA conference proceedings over the last 20+ years (from 1996 to 2019). The applied methodology is a blend of bibliometrics, webometrics and clustering with text mining. The bibliometric analysis leads to quantitative and qualitative results on three levels: (1) author, (2) article and (3) association. The most productive authors authored over 50 papers, and the top 20% authors have over 80 % of all citations generated by CAADRIA proceedings. The overall impact of CAADRIA may be characterised by nearly 2,000 known citations and by the h-index that is 17. The webometrics based on CumInCAD.org reveals that the CAADRIA papers served over 200 k users, which is a considerable visibility for scientific CAAD output. The keywords most frequently used by authors were digital fabrication, BIM and parametric, generative, computational design. Notably, 90% of the papers' descriptors are 2-grams. This study may be useful to researchers, educators and publishers interested in CAAD.

title Spatial analysis to create a walkability index. Case study: San Juan Street, Medellín
source SIGraDi 2020 [Proceedings of the 24th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISSN: 2318-6968] Online Conference 18 - 20 November 2020, pp. 433-440
summary To walk represents one of the main ways of commuting, either by necessity or pleasure, it is a guaranteed way for everyone and it contributes significantly to the health and well-being of people. However, Medellín´s urban space design is not planned to improve walking conditions. In this context, a spatial index was built based on the components that influence the urban scene, which allows to evaluate the walking experience, not only its possibility, on an axis of the city. It concludes how these variables prioritize other actions and strategies that must be taken into consideration to build a walkable city.

summary As we continue to discover the potential of social media data as an insightful source for academic research, the majority of previous work tends to focus on the density of socio-spatial relations as the foundation for understanding urban phenomena. This paper extended those approaches by introducing the concepts of diversity and inclusiveness through an investigation of the 'differences' within the networks of relations that are inherent to social media data. The author constructs a diversity measure based on the variety of home locations of social media user visitors to each geographical location in the city. This home location, in its turn, is derived from each user's digital spatio-temporal footprint. This proposed method demonstrates that through the visualization of this diversity measure, 'social hubs' (which are frequently visited by different groups of people) were able to be located that would otherwise be overlooked in conventional data analyses that focus only on density. As such, this research expands the usefulness of social media as a practical tool to help understand urban processes by making the concept of diversity - a key consideration in many planning and design contexts - measurable and mappable.

summary This study investigates the technological and methodological challenges in establishing an indeterministic approach to robotic fabrication that allows for a collaborative and creative design/fabrication process. The research objective enquires into how robotic processes in architecture can move from deterministic fabrication processes towards explorative and indeterministic design processes. To address this research objective, the study specifically explores how an architect and a robot can engage in a process of co-creation and co-evolution, that is enabled by a collaborative robotic arm equipped with an electric gripper and a web camera. Through a case-based experiment, of designing and constructing an adjustable façade system consisting of parallel wood lamellas, designer and robotic system co-create by means of interactive processes. The study will present and discuss the technological implementations used to construct the interactive robotic-based design process, with emphasis on the integration of visual analysis features in Grasshopper and on the benefits of establishing a state machine for interactive and creative robotic control in architecture.

summary There is a growing research direction that adopts an empirical approach to affective response in space, and aims at generating bodies of quantitative data regarding the correlations between spatial features and emotional states. This paper demonstrates a machine-learning driven computational framework that draws upon training data sets to predict the 'affective impact' of designed enclosures. For demonstration, it has been scripted as a Rhinoceros + Grasshopper based design tool that uses existing training data collected by the author. The data comprises of the spatial parameters of Enclosure Volume (V), Length/Width ratio (P) and Window Area/Total Internal Surface Area ratio (D) - and the corresponding emotional parameters of Valence and Arousal. The test values of these parameters are computed by defining the components of the test enclosure (walls, windows, floors and ceilings) in the script. Nonlinear regression components are run on the training datasets and the test input data is used to compute and display the real time predicted affective state on the circumplex model of affect.

summary The grading of knit changes its geometrical performance and steers membrane expansion. However, knit possesses challenges of material predictability and digital simulation, due to its multiscalar complexity and anisotropic properties. Taking as a challenge the lack of digital solutions incorporating CNC-knit performance into the design model, this paper presents a novel approach for the design-integrated simulation of graded knit, informed by an empirical dataset analysis in combination with genetic optimization algorithms. Here the simulation design tool reflects the differences of industrially knitted textile panel behavior through digital mesh grading. Diversified fabric stiffness is achieved by intertwining the yarn into variegated stitch types that steer the textile expansion under load. These are represented digitally as zoned quad meshes with each segment assigned a stiffness value. Mesh stiffness values are optimized by minimizing the distance between the point clouds and the digital mesh, which are documented through deviation colored maps. This work concludes that design properties—pattern topology, stitch ratio, pattern density—play an important role in textile panel performance under load. Stiffness values derived from the optimization are higher for shallower designs and lower for the deeper cones.

summary Many optimization tools are developed in line with the form-energy relationship to ensure energy efficiency in buildings. However, such studies with complex forms are very limited. Therefore, the MSO-2 model was developed. In this model, on the roof of the conceptual form, minimal surface is used, thus complex forms can be created. In this model, the conceptual form can be optimized (for one day) according to these objectives: increasing daylight in the space with maximum value limitation, reducing radiation on the roof, and enlarging floor surface area of the conceptual form with minimum value limitation. A test simulation was performed with this model. Thus, in order to find the most optimized form in multi-objective optimization, more generations could be produced in a short time and optimized conceptual forms, which were produced, could be tested for energy efficiency.

summary “Casting on a dump” focuses on finding accessible, low-tech fabrication methodologies that allow for the construction of parametrically designed nonstandard modular cast panels. Such an approach adopts a computational design framework using a single low-tech and low-energy fabrication device to create nonrepetitive volumetric panels cast in situ. The design input for these panels is derived from design preferences and environmental control data. The technique expands upon easy to fabricate and cast methods, targeting less-developed logistical settings worldwide, and thus responding to imminent needs related to climate, available resources, and the economy.

summary This study aims to better ascertain the influence that urbanistic parameters exert on the production of solar photovoltaic energy regarding different contexts in the city. Modifications implemented between the years of 2012 and 2016, especially on variables such as Maximum Lot Coverage, Floor Area Ratio, and Setbacks, have been evaluated through virtual models that cover areas in three different city districts. Amongst other implications, an increase in the area occupied by the buildings, as well as a decrease in the distance between them, occurred, causing more mutual shading and the loss of the photovoltaic potential associated with the building envelope.

summary To achieve Sustainable Development Goals, in addition to the switch to sustainable energy sources and energy-efficient buildings, transport offers a major lever for reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gases. The increasing demand for emission-free mobility (e.g. through electromobility) but also heat pumps has a direct impact on the electricity consumption of buildings and settlements. It is still difficult to simulate the effects and interactions of different measures as sector coupling concepts require comprehensible tools for ex ante evaluation of planning measures at the community level and the linking of domain-specific models (energy, transport). Using the municipality of Bruck an der Leitha (Austria) as an example, a digital twin based on an open data model (Bednar et al., 2020) is created for the development of methods, which can be used to simulate measures to improve the settlement structure within the municipality. Forecast models for mobility (Schmaus, 2019; Ritz, 2019) and the building stock are developed or applied and linked via the open data model to be able to run through development scenarios and variants. The forecasting and visualisation options created in the project form the basis for the ex-ante evaluation of measures and policies on the way to a Positive-Energy-District. By identifying and collecting missing data, data gaps are filled for the simulation of precise models in the specific study area. A digital, interactive 3D model is created to examine the forecast results and the different scenarios.

source SIGraDi 2020 [Proceedings of the 24th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISSN: 2318-6968] Online Conference 18 - 20 November 2020, pp. 569-576
summary In Colombia the last five years the average annual demand for air conditioning increased by 73%. One strategy to increase thermal comfort and reduce the use of cooling systems and energy consumption in buildings is the use of kinetic envelopes as an active response system to changes in the environment. However, there is little literature analyzing their performance and effects on buildings. This research analyses the operation of different envelope systems through digital modelling and simulation of environmental conditions. The aim is to generate a set of defined advantages in the use of kinetic envelopes for the context in the Caribbean region in Colombia.
