summary In a systems building experiment, we explored how directly manipulating non-parametric geometries can be used together with a real-time parametric performance analytics for informed design decision-making in the early phases of design. This combination gives rise to a design process where considerations that would traditionally take place in the late phases of design can become part of the early phases. The paper presents FlowUI, a prototype tool for performance-driven design that is developed in a collaboration with our industry partner as part of our design analytics research program. The tool works with and responds to changes in the design modeling environment, processes the design data and presents the results in design (data) analytics interfaces. We discuss the system's design intent and its overall architecture, followed by a set of suggestions on the comparative analysis of design solutions and design reports generation as integral parts of design exploration tasks.

summary In the context of contemporary environment and society, the architectural form optimization based on Environmental performance-driven design is a method by using environmental performance data to optimize the architectural form. Its value lies in dealing with the interaction between architecture and environment, and developing architecture with environmental sustainability. This thesis summarizes the similarities and differences between performance-driven form design and traditional bionic form design. The traditional bionic design separates the bionic object from its complex living environment, and its simple imitation tends to fall into the local rather than the global optimum. However, performancedriven design is different from bionic design. It advocates environmental factors as a driving factor rather than a confrontational factor. It is a systematic global optimal method for studying architectural form. This paper puts forward the specific architectural form optimization simulation process based on the performance-driven thought. Taking the multilayer parking building design of the riparian zone on the south bank of Chongqing as an example, the parametric design method is used to obtain architectural optimization form adapted to the environment.

summary In intelligent epoch, automatic parameter design systems reduce the requirements of the skills needed to create objects. The creator only needs to select the most perceptual primitive form to automatically generate the data system that iterates to the most efficient solution. In this paper, a method of combining performance driven optimization with parametric design is proposed. The iterative evolution is under the control of performance loop and fabrication loop, which makes all the data provided by parametric design in a practical project available for exploring structural analysis and digital prefabrication. Related to the case of surface steel structure, parametric optimization is not limited to a set of shape types or design problems, it would be based on the generality and built-in characteristics of parametric modelling environment in the most convenient and flexible way. (Rolvink et al. 2010)And the given parameters would be fed back on geometric structure, performance indicators, and design variables, so that designers can easily and effectively coordinate and try different solutions. The system transforms the generated data into machine language so that the process including design, analysis, manufacturing, and construction can maintain the orthogonal persistence of the data.

title Integrating expertise and parametric analysis for a data-driven decision-making practice
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 18 - no. 4, 424–440
summary This study explores the integration of expert design intuition and parametric data analysis. While traditional professional design expertise helps to rapidly frame relevant aspects of the design problem and produce viable solutions, it has limitations in addressing multi-criteria design problems with conflicting objectives. On the other hand, parametric analysis, in combination with data analysis methods, helps to construct and analyze large design spaces of potential design solutions and tradeoffs, within a given frame. We explore a process whereby expert design teams propose a design using their current intuitive and analytical methods. That design is then further optimized using parametric analysis. This study specifically explores the specification of geometric and material properties of building envelopes for two typically conflicting objectives: daylight quality and energy consumption. We compare performance of the design after initial professional design exploration, and after parametric analysis, showing consistently significant performance improvement after the second process. The study explores synergies between intuitive and systematic design approaches, demonstrating how alignment can help expert teams efficiently and significantly improve project performance.

summary The paper presents a model for decentralizing building information modelling, through implementing its infrastructure using the decentralized web. We discuss the shortcomings of BIM in terms of its infrastructure, with a focus on tracing identities of design authorship in this collective design tool. In parallel we examine the issues with BIM in the cloud and propose a decentralized infrastructure based on the Ethereum blockchain and the Interplanetary filesystem (IPFS). A series of computing nodes, that act as nodes on the Ethereum Blockchain, host disk storage with which they participate in a larger storage pool on the Interplanetary Filesystem. This storage is made available through an API is used by architects and designers creating and editing a building information model that resides on the IPFS decentralised storage. Through this infrastructure central servers are eliminated, and BIM libraries and models can be shared with others in an immutable and transparent manner. As such Architecture practices are able to exploit their intellectual property in novel ways, by making it public on the internet. The infrastructure also allows the decentralised creation of a resilient global pool of data that allows the participation of computation agents in the creation and simulation of BIM models.

summary Healthcare design practice has shown increasing interest in the assessment of design alternatives from a human-centered approach, focusing on organizational performance, patient health, and wellness outcomes, in addition to building performance. The goal of this research is to advance building analytics by identifying, defining and implementing computational human-centered design metrics. The knowledge is extracted from an exhaustive literature review in the field of evidence-based design (EBD), which has studied the associations between building features and the occupants’ outcomes but has not yet consolidated the findings into metrics and implications for design practice in a systematic manner. In consultation with industry experts, we have prioritized the evaluation aspects and developed a weighted evaluation framework for assessment of various design options. The developed metrics that input building parameters and output potential health and performance outcomes are implemented in a a parametric environment utilizing add-ons accordingly, and using an ambulatory clinic designed by Perkins&Will as a case study.

summary Reports show that numerous heritage sites are in danger due to conflicts and heritage mismanagement in many parts of the world. Experts have resorted to digital tools to attempt to conserve and preserve endangered and damaged sites. To that end, in this applied research, we aim to develop a deep learning framework applied to the decaying tangible heritage of Historic Cairo, known as “The City of a Thousand Minarets.” The proposed framework targets Cairo’s historic minaret styles as a test case study for the broader applications of deep learning in digital heritage. It comprises recognition and segmentation tasks, which use a deep learning semantic segmentation model trained on two data sets representing the two most dominant minaret styles in the city, Mamluk (1250–1517 CE) and Ottoman (1517–1952 CE). The proposed framework aims to classify these two types using images. It can help create a multidimensional model from just a photograph of a historic building, which can quickly catalog and document a historic building or element. The study also sheds light on the obstacles preventing the exploration and implementation of deep learning techniques in digital heritage. The research presented in this paper is a work-in-progress of a larger applied research concerned with implementing deep learning techniques in the digital heritage domain.

summary Generative design methods may involve a complex design space with an overwhelming number of alternatives with their form and design performance data. Existing research addresses this complexity by introducing various techniques for simplification through clustering and dimensionality reduction. In this study, we further analyze the relevant literature on design space simplification and exploration to identify their potentials and gaps. We find that the potentials include: alleviating the choice overload problem, opening up new venues for interrelating design forms and data, creating visual overviews of the design space and introducing ways of creating form-driven queries. Building on that, we present the first prototype of a design analytics dashboard that combines coordinated and interactive visualizations of design forms and performance data along with the result of simplifying the design space through hierarchical clustering.

source Werner, L and Koering, D (eds.), Anthropologic: Architecture and Fabrication in the cognitive age - Proceedings of the 38th eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, TU Berlin, Berlin, Germany, 16-18 September 2020, pp. 361-370
summary A renewed interest in stereotomy, narrowly entwined with digital technologies, has allowed for the recovery and proposal of new techniques and expressions in this building approach. A new classification scheme for stereotomy research allows for the framing of various aspects related to this discipline, including a newly developed fabrication system specially tailored for the wedge-shaped voussoirs. This fabrication system is based in a reusable mould which may assume an infinite number of geometries, avoiding the wasteful discarding of material found in subtractive strategies. The usage of a mould also allows for more sustainable materials to be employed, catering to current challenges. The strategies subject for demonstration in this project rely on various bottom-up approaches, which involve particle physic simulations such as a hanging model to compute an optimal stereo-funicular shape, or spring mechanisms to find optimal coplanar solutions. The proposed mechanisms work in a parametric algorithmically environment, able to handle dozens of uniquely different voussoirs at the same time. Together with the automatic translation to fabrication data, the proposed shape complexity would hardly be built with classic tools. The Tamandua Vault project has the purpose of exemplifying the possibilities of an updated stereotomy, while its design demonstrates current strategies that may be employed in the resolution of complex geometrical problems and bespoke fabrication of construction components for stereotomy.

summary In the early design phases, Life Cycle Assessment can assist project stakeholders in making informed decisions on choosing structural systems and materials with an awareness of environmental sustainability through their embodied carbon content; yet embodied carbon is difficult to quantify without detailed design information in the early design stages. In response, this paper proposes a novel data-driven tool, prior to the definition of floor plan layouts to perform embodied carbon evaluation of existing building designs based on a Bayesian Neural Network (BNN) regression. The BNN is built from data drawn from existing floor plans of residential buildings, and predicts material volume and embodied carbon from generic design parameters typical in the early design stage. Users will be able to interact with the tool in Grasshopper or as an online resource, input generic design parameters, and obtain comparative visualizations based on the choice of a construction system and its environmental sustainability in a 'shoebox' interface - a simplified three-dimensional representation of a building's primary spatial units generated with the tool.

summary Data-driven Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology has brought new tools to efficiently deal with the tension between the real and the virtual environments in the field of Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operation (AECO). For historic assets, BIM represents a paradigm shift, enabling better decision-making about preventive maintenance, heritage management, and interpretation. The potential application of the Historic-BIM is creating a digital twin of the asset. This paper deals with the concept of a virtual environment for the consolidation and dissemination of heritage information. Here we show the process of creating interactive virtual environments for the Pampulha Modern Ensemble designed by Oscar Niemeyer in the 1940s, and the workflow to their dissemination in an AR visualization APP. Our results demonstrate the APP feasibility to the Pampulha's building interpretation.

summary In this paper, we present a procedure to derive algebraic parameters from geometrically described truncated hyperbolic paraboloid surfaces. The procedure uses parametric modelling and optimisation to converge on close algebraic approximations of hyperbolic paraboloid geometry through a successive breakdown of vast search spaces. We illustrate this procedure with its application to the surfaces of the 1958 Philips Pavilion designed by Le Corbusier and Iannis Xenakis. This application yielded previously unavailable parametric data of this building in algebraic form. It highlights the power of the parametric design and optimisation toolkit, both in terms of automated search and epistemological enablement.

title Application of a Vertical Effective Crank–Slider Approach in Reconfigurable Buildings through Computer-Aided Algorithmic Modelling
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2024.1.421
source Kontovourkis, O, Phocas, MC and Wurzer, G (eds.), Data-Driven Intelligence - Proceedings of the 42nd Conference on Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe (eCAADe 2024), Nicosia, 11-13 September 2024, Volume 1, pp. 421–430
summary Elementary robotics mechanisms based on the effective crank–slider and four–bar kinematics methods have been applied in the past to develop architectural concepts of reconfigurable structures of planar rigid-bar linkages (Phocas et al., 2020; Phocas et al., 2019). The applications referred to planar structural systems interconnected in parallel to provide reconfigurable buildings with rectangular plan section. In enabling structural reconfigurability attributes within the spatial circular section buildings domain, a vertical setup of the basic crank–slider mechanism is proposed in the current paper. The kinematics mechanism is integrated on a column placed at the middle of an axisymmetric circular shaped spatial linkage structure. The definition of target case shapes of the structure is based on a series of numerical geometric analyses that consider certain architectural and construction criteria (i.e., number of structural members, length, system height, span, erectability etc.), as well as structural objectives (i.e., structural behavior improvement against predominant environmental actions) aiming to meet diverse operational requirements and lightweight construction. Computer-aided algorithmic modelling is used to analyze the system's kinematics, in order to provide a solid foundation and enable rapid adaptation for mechanisms that exhibit controlled reconfigurations. The analysis demonstrates the implementation of digital parametric design tools for the investigation of the kinematics of the system at a preliminary design stage, in avoiding thus time-demanding numerical analysis processes. The design process may further provide enhanced interdisciplinary performance-based design outcomes.

summary Official data on informal settlements are outdated, scarce, and sometimes nonexistent. Also, existing digital tools to produce spatial data on urban form are not prepared to deal with their degree of heterogeneity. We then propose a method to obtain, structure and analyze georeferenced data, aiming to support participatory planning of precarious settlements in Brazil. The results include mapping basic elements of urban form and also automatic extraction of urban parameters. The method proved relevant to allow not only the collaboration between team members but also the dialogue with community members, revealing its role in fostering a transformative design process.

summary Recent developments in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including drone delivery services and air taxis, are revolutionizing urban transport, leading to a new field of research referred to as Urban Air Mobility (UAM). While several contemporary efforts to computationally model future scenarios for UAM exist, in this paper we argue that these models tend to be narrowly conceived as air-space design and management tools and provide little information on ground-level impacts. This paper describes an ongoing effort to create UAM modelling tools useful specifically to urban designers as part of a push toward integration of urban airspace design with ground-level master-planning. Current functions permit designers to visualize drone-fleet origin-corridor-destination routes, generate a strategic model of UAM noise, and compare tradeoffs between UAM system efficiency and noise.

summary In the front-loaded project workflow, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) design requires precision from the beginning of the design phase. Leveraging insights from as-built drawings during the early design stage can be beneficial to design enhancement. This study proposes a GAN (Generative Adversarial Networks)-based system which populates the fire extinguishing (FE) system onto the architectural drawing image as its input. An algorithm called Pix2Pix with the improved loss function enabled such generation. The algorithm was trained by the dataset, which includes pairs of as-built building plans with and without FE equipment. A novel index termed Piping Coverage Rate was jointly proposed to evaluate the obtained results. The system produces the output within 45 seconds, which is drastically faster than the conventional manual workflow. The system realizes the prompt engineering study learned from past as-built information, which contributes to further the data-driven decision making.

summary Taking the Syrian city of Homs as its point of departure, this paper aims to suggest some first components of a parametric urban design approach to post-conflict reconstruction focused on scenario building. From analyses of social, physical and environmental infrastructures and theoretical positions on environmentally and socially sustainable urban design in the Middle Eastern culture and climate, a framework and some initial tests for a parametric 3D urban model developed in CityEngine are presented. With the intended purpose of providing a tool capable of visualising modifiable urban design scenarios along with relevant associated data, the presented work focuses on the smallest scale of a model encompassing scales from the district level to the level of the urban block, with some relevant architectural features relating to social and environmental qualities.

summary In the era of three-dimensional (3D) informatics, the 3D point cloud modeling algorithm has the potential to further develop. In this study, we attempt to eliminate the limitations of the traditional reverse modeling method and directly turn point cloud data into the material for innovative architectural design by integrating 3D point cloud modeling into the CAD/CAM platform(Rhino/Grasshopper) most widely used by parametric designers. In this way, the randomly ordered point cloud model can be regenerated and reordered according to the designer's requirements. In addition, point cloud data can be spatially segmented and morphologically evolved according to the designer's preferences to construct a 3D model with higher efficiency and more dynamic real-time adjustment compared with the triangular mesh model. Moreover, when a computer vision technique is integrated into the point cloud design process, the point cloud model can be further used to more efficiently achieve rapid visualization, artisticization, and form adjustment. Therefore, point cloud modeling can not only be applied to the spatial structure presentation of building information modeling(BIM) but also can provide further opportunities for creative architectural design.

summary Artificial Intelligence (AI), based on interpretation of data, influences various professions including architectural design today. Although research on integrating conceptual design with Machine Learning (ML) algorithms as a subset of the AI has been investigated previously, there is not a framework towards integration of architectural geometry with material properties and structural performance data towards decision making in the early-design phase. Undertaking performance simulations require significant amount of computation power and time. The aim of this research is to integrate ML algorithms into design process to achieve time efficiency and improve design results. The proposed workflow consists of three stages, including generation of the parametric model; running structural performance simulations to collect the data, and operating the ML algorithms, including Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Non-Linear Regression (NLR) and Gaussian Mixture (GM) for undertaking different tasks. The results underlined that the system generates relatively fast solutions with accuracy. Additionally, ML algorithms can assist generative design processes.
