title A Generative Material System of Clay Components-The Porosity Language

summary Compared with the pre-determined architecture design based on standard elements, the underlying structure of nature is more like a complex system. Porosity language, for example, which is inspired by nature, has been widely applied in the architecture context. Through the analysis of the underlying methodologies of topology in each case, the strategy is to illustrate how clay components can achieve this natural porosity language. With the help of parametric topology, the report will clearly show how the innovative language of clay components is inspired, optimized and applied. As the background of the literature, natural porosity and examples of existing cavity wall made by clay components will be compared and analyzed in Sect. 1. In Sect. 2, Steven Hall’s porous methodology will be considered as the primary topological reference. The parametric iteration topology will be stated explicitly in Sect. 3, which will direct the randomness of porosity form to the balance between structural stability and the aesthetic value. In the last chapter, different architecture applications will be studied through the supporting of micro-climate simulation.

title Can the subaltern speak?

summary How could design be used as a method of interrogation for addressing larger cultural, social, or political issues? How could we explore the possibility of using emerging technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence in order to subvert the status quo? The project presented in this paper is inspired by the historical masks, known as Niqab, worn by the Bandari women from southern Iran. It has been said that these masks were developed during Portuguese colonial rule as a way to protect the wearer from the gaze of slave masters looking for pretty women. In this project two robotic masks seemingly begin to develop their own language to communicate with each other, blinking their eyelashes in rapid succession, using Morse code generated by artificial intelligence (AI). The project draws on a Facebook experiment where two AI bots began to develop their own language. It also draws on an incident when an American soldier used his eyes to blink the word “TORTURE” using Morse code during his captivity in Vietnam, and stories of women using code to report domestic abuse during the COVID-19 lockdown. Here the “wink” of the sexual predator is subverted into a language to protect women from the advances of a predator. Through the lens of the design methodology that is referred to as “critical making,” this project bridges AI, interactive design, and critical thinking. Moreover, while most feminist discourse takes a Eurocentric view, this project addresses feminism from a non-Western perspective.

summary Legibility is a core concept in spatial cognition theories since Kevin Lynch published The Image of the City in 1960. It is the ability of a city to be interpreted and easily used, travelled and enjoyed, from the pedestrian's perspective. Following a proposal in the participatory budget process of the city of Bilbao, we wrote a technical report to improve the urban legibility of the city and facilitate wayfinding through innovations in signage. This paper aims to present this project, which is an application of computational methods to measure urban legibility that resulted in a proposal for a new wayfinding strategy for Bilbao. The method is based on GIS data, and it simulates urban processes using dedicated algorithms, allowing us to perform two analyses that resulted in two overlapping maps: a heat map of decision points and a map of visual openings. It allowed us to perceive common urban elements that can help to decide both the location of the wayfinding signage and how it should provide the relevant information. In addition, the research introduces the concept of anticipation points, as a complement to the existing idea of decision points.

summary This paper presents a novel human-machine collaborative approach to automatic quality-control of Glass-Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) molds directly on the factory floor. The framework introduces Industry 4.0 technologies to enhance the ability of skilled craftsmen to make molds through the provision of horizontal feedback regarding dimensional tolerances. Where digital tools are seldom used in the fabrication of GFRC molds, and expert craftsmen are not digital experts, our implementation of automated registration and feedback processes enables craftsmen to be integrated into and gain value from the digital production chain. In this paper, we describe the in-progress framework, Precision Partner, which connects 3d scanning and point cloud registration of geometrically complex and varied one off elements to factory floor dimensional feedback. We firstly introduce the production context of GFRC molds, as well as industry standards for production feedback. We then detail our methods, and report the results of a case study that tests the framework on the case of a balcony element.

summary In this experimental research project we report on the manufacturing process of the first full-size 3D printed concrete structure in our country. The house was 3D printed by an ABB IRB 6700 robot whose range we made fit with the requirements for transportation size and also, its range determined the size and geometry of the house. During the transformation process from sketch to code we involved students to apply computational design methods. We designed the main load bearing structure which had to be thinnest and lightest possible together with its insulation features and printability. We were aware of the world-wide research in this field started by NASA centennial Challenge called 3D-printed-habitat [Roman,2020] as well as start-ups derived from this research [1,2,3,4]. During the project, we investigated the following matters: (1) the relationship between geometry of the wall in model and in practice (2), setting of the robot and the mixture; and (3) stress test of the wall. With the results of the test we aimed at contribution to standardisation of 3D printed structures in ISO/ASTM 52939:2021. The finalized structure, named "Prvok", was made to prove printability of the mixture and stability of the design.

summary As part of an ongoing research on the study of digital tools envisioning innovation in the design process, this article intends to demonstrate how analogical and digital design thinking techniques can improve and expand the range of creative methodologies in the context of an undergraduate architectural design studio. The approach presented builds on the improvement of a theoretical-didactic model during three strategies, each aiming at different steps of the design process. The first one explores analog design thinking techniques on the initial concept decisions, the following demonstrates the joint use of parametric and BIM tools as an alternative resource for generating complex forms, and the last one presents BIM technology as a pedagogical instrument for learning a constructive system. Thus, besides presenting the methods, instruments, products, and results generated, this paper will also discuss the gains and difficulties faced, appointing a new approach to undergo in the future.

summary Improving speech intelligibility in classrooms enhances information dissemination, institutional knowledge capture, and quality of learning experience. While off-the-shelf solutions are available for acoustically retrofitting existing learning spaces, they do not allow for a fine-tuned context-specific intervention. However, this possibility is enabled through bespoke digital manufacturing informed by advanced digital simulations. In this research we explore and synchronize architecture, acoustics, computation, and fabrication for the making of better sound environments. We present performance-driven design-to-manufacture (DTM) workflows for sound-scattering brick elements. We reimagine the brick as an acoustically active geometry capable of modulating the sound experience in a university classroom by improving speech intelligibility. We contextualize our research within existing methods of digital performance-based design and robotic fabrication processes, namely wire cutting and pick-and-place applications. We then detail digital methods that combine heuristics and acoustic simulation to design the bricks within the 3D modeling environment, as well as describe the processes of robotic oscillating wire cutting and adaptive pick-and-place developed for the execution of the full-scale demonstrator. Finally, we report on the results of the acoustic analysis performed on the full-scale demonstrator in situ and laboratory measurements of a representative demonstrator which validates our design hypothesis.

summary Agent-based models rely on decentralized decision making instantiated in the interactions between agents and the environment. In the context of generative design, agent-based models can enable decentralized geometric modelling, provide partial information about the generative process, and enable fine-grained interaction. However, the existing agent-based models originate from non-architectural problems and it is not straight-forward to adapt them for spatial design. To address this, we introduce a method to create custom spatial agents that can satisfy architectural requirements and support fine-grained interaction using multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL). We focus on a proof of concept where agents control spatial partitions and interact in an environment (represented as a grid) to satisfy custom goals (shape, area, adjacency, etc.). This approach uses double deep Q-network (DDQN) combined with a dynamic convolutional neural-network (DCNN). We report an experiment where trained agents generalize their knowledge to different settings, consistently explore good spatial configurations, and quickly recover from perturbations in the action selection.

summary Over the past few decades, architectural practice and, consequently, the design studio have been increasingly challenged. Indeed, the development of digital tools and parametric design, in particular, has given rise to a new type of architectural knowledge. Among the IJAC publications over the past three years, we highlight the current diversity of vocabulary used to discuss this knowledge and develop why we focus our study on conceptual knowledge. We then report a learning situation through studio design education. This paper finally presents the steps developed to measure this knowledge and hypothesizes on the future work needed in order to have relevant quantitative results. The purpose of this paper is to observe the evolution of students' understanding when shifting from a traditional teacher-student relationship to an engaging learning environment, considering the specificities of parametric, and not to suggest a strict method to follow when learning parametric. This could guide teachers to adapt to their own situations.

summary An analysis of AI in design literature, compiled from almost 200 publications from the 1980s onwards. The majority of the sources are proceedings from various conferences. This work is inspired by the Ten Problems for AI in Design (Gero 1991) workshop report, which listed the problems to be tackled in design with AI. Almost 30 years since the publication, it seems most of the Ten Problems cannot be considered solved or even addressed. One of this paper's goals is to identify, categorize and examine the bottlenecks in the adoption of AI in design. The collected papers were analysed to obtain the following data: Problem, Tool, Solution, Stage and Future work. The conclusions drawn from the analysis are used to define a range of existing problems with AI adoption, further illustrated with an update to the Ten Problems. Ideally this paper will spark a discussion on the quality of research, methodology and continuity in research.

summary Net-to-gross efficiency is defined as the ratio of net area to a gross area of a building. Net-to-gross efficiency will determine the quantity of leasable building area. On the other side, the effectiveness of the spatial distribution of a floor plan design must follow the value of net-to-gross efficiency. Therefore in the context of office design, there are two challenges need to be improved: 1) to get an optimum value of efficiency, architects need to assign the amount and size of the office units which can be effectively arranged, and 2) to fulfill high net-to-gross efficiency value that usually set out at minimal 85%. This paper aims to apply the packing algorithm as a strategy to achieve optimum net-to-gross efficiency and generating spatial configuration of office units that fit with the result. Our study experimented with series of models and simulations consisting of three stages that start from finding net-to-gross efficiency, defining office unit profiles based on preferable office space units, and applying the packing algorithm to get an optimum office net-to-gross efficiency. Computational processes using physics engine and optimization solvers have been utilized to generate design layouts that have minimal spatial residues, hence increasing the net-to-gross ratio.

summary We present a digital design strategy for developing an intelligent rotational shading system responsive to changes in indoor temperatures. The strategy was first modelled with an Arduino-based physical prototype, identifying the concept of "mapping" between building indoor air temperature and rotational movement (angle) of external solar shading. A virtual parametric modelling approach was then followed to test three methods of mapping: linear, quadratic and logarithmic. The aim was to examine the performative differences exhibited by the three mapping methods in terms of the total comfort hours and estimated cooling energy demand during summer months. A typical cellular office in the Arts Tower of University of Sheffield was chosen for the parametric modelling (Rhino-Grasshopper) and environmental simulation (Honeybee-Ladybug) of horizontal and vertical rotational shading system design. The simulation shows that the horizontal shading system rotating according to the linear mapping methods achieve greater total comfort hours with lower cooling energy demand in the case of Arts Tower in Sheffield, UK.

title Optimization and Prediction of Design Variables Driven by Building Energy Performance—A Case Study of Office Building in Wuhan

summary This research focuses on the energy performance of office building in Wuhan. The research explored and predicted the optimal solution of design variables by Multi-Island Genetic Algorithm (MIGA) and RBF Artificial neural networks (RBF-ANNs). Research analyzed the cluster centers of design variable by K-means cluster method. In the study, the RBF-ANNs model was established by 1,000 simulation cases. The RMSE (root mean square error) of the RBF-ANNs model in different energy aspects does not exceed 15%. Comparing to the reference case (the largest energy consumption case in the optimization), the 214 elite cases in RBF-ANNs model save at least 37.5% energy. By the cluster centers of the design variables in the elite cases, the study summarized the benchmark of 14 design variables and also suggested a building energy guidance for Wuhan office building design.

title BIM Maturity Index: Analysis and Comparison of Architecture Office’s BIM Performance in Porto Alegre

summary This study evaluated the BIM Maturity Levels of architecture offices in Porto Alegre (Brazil) by adapting the method developed by Succar (2009). It was carried out by applying a questionary in face-to-face interviews and converting the qualitative data obtained into quantitative, ultimately generating the BIM Maturity Index: a percentage number that can be classified and compared. The preliminary results indicate a significant discrepancy in BIM competences between the case studies while reasserting challenges faced by them in a regional scope: the scarcity of external stakeholders appropriately inserted on the BIM process and the undersupplied BIM knowledge offered in academic courses.

summary Building performance optimization is effective in finding optimal designs and improving building energy efficiency, but its reliability can be affected by uncertainties in input parameters. This paper conducts a reliability analysis on energy-based form optimization of office buildings under uncertainties in envelope and occupancy parameters. An optimization process involving Rhinoceros, EnergyPlus and genetic algorithms is first implemented. Then parametric studies of 644 scenarios involving 4 cities in different climates and 3 form variables are conducted. The results indicate that uncertainties in input parameters could lead to major unreliability of optimization results, including reductions up to 13% in energy saving achieved by optimization and descents up to 10% in energy efficiency compared with results before optimization. Moreover, the uncertainty in visual transmittance of windows is the most significant cause for the unreliability, followed by U-value of walls, while the uncertainty in occupant density and occupant schedule has limited influence. The results can help designers understand the uncertainty of which parameters should be controlled and to what extend optimization results can be trusted in various scenarios.

title Developing a fabrication workflow for irregular sawlogs

summary In this article, we suggest using contemporary manufacturing technologies to integrate material properties with architectural design tools, revealing new possibilities for the use of wood in architecture. Through an investigative approach, material capacities and fabrication methods are explored and combined towards establishing new workflows and architectural expressions, where material, fabrication and result are closely interlinked. The experimentation revolves around discarded, crooked oak logs, doomed to be used as firewood due to their irregularity. This project treats their diverging shapes differently by offering unique processing to each log informed by its particularities. We suggest here a way to use the natural forms and properties of sawlogs to generate new structures and spatial conditions. In this article, we discuss the scope of this approach and provide an example of a workflow for handling the discrete shapes of natural sawlogs in a system that involve the collection of material, scanning/digitisation, handling of a stockpile, computer analysis, design and robotic manufacturing. The creation of this specific method comes from a combination of investigation of wood as a material, review of existing research in the field, studies of the production lines in the current wood industry and experimentation through our in-house laboratory facilities. As such, the workflow features several solutions for handling the complex and different shapes and data of natural wood logs in a highly digitised machining and fabrication environment. This up-cycling of discarded wood supply establishes a non-standard workflow that utilises non-standard material stock and leads to a critical articulation of today’s linear material economy. The project becomes part of an ambition to reach sustainable development goals and technological innovation in global and resource-intensive architecture and building industry.

summary Several research projects (Gramazio et al. 2014; Willmann et al. 2015; Helm et al. 2017; Adel et al. 2018; Adel Ahmadian 2020) have investigated the use of automated assembly technologies (e.g., industrial robotic arms) for the fabrication of nonstandard timber structures. Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

summary The degree of geometric complexity a concrete element can assume is directly linked to our ability to fabricate its formwork. Additive manufacturing allows fabrication of freeform formwork and expands the design possibilities for concrete elements. In particular, fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing of thermoplastic is a useful method of formwork fabrication due to the lightweight properties of the resulting formwork and the accessibility of FDM 3D printing technology. The research in this area is in early stages of development, including several existing efforts examining the 3D printing of a single material for formwork— including two medium-scale projects using PLA and PVA. However, the performance of 3D printed formwork and its geometric complexity varies, depending on the material used for 3D printing the formwork. To expand the existing research, this paper reviews the opportunities and challenges of using 3D printed thermoplastic formwork for fabricating custom concrete elements using multiple thermoplastic materials. This research cross-references and investigates PLA, PVA, PETG, and the combination of PLA-PVA as formwork material, through the design and fabrication of nonstandard structural concrete columns. The formwork was produced using robotic pellet extrusion and filament-based 3D printing. A series of case studies showcase the increased geometric freedom achievable in formwork when 3D printing with multiple materials. They investigate the potential variations in fabrication methods and their print characteristics when using different 3D printing technologies and printing materials. Additionally, the research compares speed, cost, geometric freedom, and surface resolution.

summary Many optimization tools are developed in line with the form-energy relationship to ensure energy efficiency in buildings. However, such studies with complex forms are very limited. Therefore, the MSO-2 model was developed. In this model, on the roof of the conceptual form, minimal surface is used, thus complex forms can be created. In this model, the conceptual form can be optimized (for one day) according to these objectives: increasing daylight in the space with maximum value limitation, reducing radiation on the roof, and enlarging floor surface area of the conceptual form with minimum value limitation. A test simulation was performed with this model. Thus, in order to find the most optimized form in multi-objective optimization, more generations could be produced in a short time and optimized conceptual forms, which were produced, could be tested for energy efficiency.

summary Designing for extraterrestrial life is a very up-to-date issue. However, there are many constraints in this kind of designs. Designs that provide the best solution can only be obtained by identifying these constraints very well. In this study, a design concept was developed for life in Mars by considering various constraints. This design consists of a kinetic system with pneumatic structure. The preliminary scheme of this structure, which was planned to produce as a prototype, was discussed in the scope of this study.
