summary The research presented in this paper investigates the development of "3D printed ceramic green wall", a technological Nature Based Solution (NBS) aimed at regenerating urban areas by improving spatial quality and sustainability through clean and autonomous energy production. Building upon previous research, the challenge of this system is to adapt additive manufacturing processes of ceramic 3D printing with biophotovoltaic systems while simultaneously developing digital and cyber-physical frameworks to generate site and user responsive design and autonomous solutions that optimize system performance and energy generation. The paper explores the complex design negotiations between these drivers, focusing particularly on their performance optimization, and finally highlights the system potential as exemplified through a successful implementation of a 1:1 site responsive wall prototype.

summary Architects and urban designers use space allocation to develop layouts constrained by project-specific attributes of spaces and relations between them. The space allocation problem (SAP) is a general class of computable problems that eluded automation due to combinatorial complexity and diversity of architectural forms. In this paper, we propose a solution to the space allocation problem using reinforcement learning (RL). In RL, an artificial agent interacts with a simulation of the design problem to learn the optimal spatial organization of a layout using a feedback mechanism based on project-specific constraints. Compared to supervised learning, where the scope of the design problem is restricted by the availability of prior samples, we developed a general approach using RL to address novel design problems, represented as SAP. We integrated the proposed solution to SAP with numerous geometry modules, collectively defined as the space allocation techniques (SAT). In this implementation, the optimization and generative modules are decoupled such that designers can connect the modules in various ways to generate layouts with desired geometric and topological attributes. The outcome of this research is a user-friendly, freely accessible Rhino Grasshopper (C#) plugin, namely, the Design Optimization Toolset or DOTs, a compilation of the proposed SAT. DOTs allows designers to interactively develop design alternatives that reconcile project-specific constraints with the geometric complexity of architectural forms. We describe how professional designers have applied DOTs in space planning, site parcellation, massing, and urban design problems that integrate with performance analysis to enable a holistic, semi-automated design exploration.

summary Three decades past since the adoption of sustainability rating systems (SRS) by the Architecture Engineering and Construction industry (AEC) as standard methods for sustainable development evaluation. Nevertheless, these methods still suffer from a low adoption and implementation rate due to their manual, labor-intensive, expert dependent, and time-demanding process. The partial success of urban development evaluation puts forth the question: Are there faster, more accurate quantitative methods for advancing sustainability evaluation? The paper describes a prototype workflow for evaluating the performance of urban landscape design in a single digital workflow, based on ecological key indicator criteria. Grasshopper and Python parametric platforms were used to translate the criteria into quantitative spatial metrics. This study demonstrates optimized biomass measurement in two urban scales in line with the SITES rating system for landscape development: (XS) site development and (XL) neighborhood scale. The measured biomass density is used as a positive indication of ecosystem services capacity in the development site. The framework's quantitative workflow contributes to additional spatial feedbacks compared to the original numeric-based rating system method. Through these, composition and configuration metrics such as ecological connectivity, edge contrast, and patch shape can be visualized, measured, and compared. The metrics, which indicate performance characteristics of the design, generate new opportunities for data-rich sustainability evaluations of urban landscapes, using a single computer-aided workflow.

summary From the epidemiological perspective, previous research methods of COVID-19 are generally based on classical statistical analysis. As a result, spatial information is often not used effectively. This paper uses image-based neural networks to explore the relationship between urban spatial risk and the distribution of infected populations, and the design of urban facilities. We take the Spatio-temporal data of people infected with new coronary pneumonia before February 28 in Wuhan in 2020 as the research object. We use kriging spatial interpolation technology and core density estimation technology to establish the epidemic heat distribution on fine grid units. We further examine the distribution of nine main spatial risk factors, including agencies, hospitals, park squares, sports fields, banks, hotels, Etc., which are tested for the significant positive correlation with the heat distribution of the epidemic. The weights of the spatial risk factors are used for training Generative Adversarial Network models, which predict the heat distribution of the outbreak in a given area. According to the trained model, optimizing the relevant environment design in urban areas to control risk factors effectively prevents and manages the epidemic from dispersing. The input image of the machine learning model is a city plan converted by public infrastructures, and the output image is a map of urban spatial risk factors in the given area.

summary This paper is a critical essay on the role of intelligent systems in the 21st century and their usage in city optimization that planners and urban designers objectified control. Promulgated in the 2000s in urban design as a form of control, cybernetics became a useful tool and, today, with metropolitan epidemics, transportation, and information fluxes, this field became more visible in the expansion of parametric actions to control and surveil. This evidence had a clear paradox between the determinism of a transparent city and behaviorism of a black-box design, which is commonly sold – and controlled – as a smart city.

summary The main goal of this paper is to present a decision support tool that translates systemic thinking and dynamic patterns into an immersive computational design method and through improved communication and simulation of abstract and complex urban data enhances the planning processes dialogue between different stakeholders and supports decision-making processes. The author presents a multi-level immersive and tangible interface setup consisting of technical and conceptual elements that, as a whole, through the use of dynamic patterns visualise the interaction of distinctive agents in the Finnish Lapland. It addresses the lack of a holistic approach and incorporation of dynamic patterns in the planning process by proposing a decision support tool that uses the results from these investigations to inform decision-making in planning and design tasks.

summary The following paper talks about the studio project [Symbios]City, which is developed as a design research project in 2020–2021 Schumacher’ studio on social ecology of the graduate program in Architectural Association’s design research lab. The project aims to create an assemblage of social ecologies through a rich but cohesive multi-authored urban district. The primary ambition is to generate an urban area with a characterful, varied identity, that achieves a balanced order between unity and difference avoiding both the sterile and disorienting monotony of centrally planned modernist cities and the (equally disorienting) visual chaos of an agglomeration of utterly unrelated interventions as we find now frequently. Through a thorough research process, our project evolves mainly out of three principles that are taken into consideration for the development of our project: topological optimization, phenomenology, and ecology. By “ecology”, we understand it as a living network of information exchange. Therefore, every strategy we employ is not merely about reacting to the weather conditions, but instead it is an inquiry into the various ways we can exploit the latter, a translation of the weather conditions into spatial and programmatic properties. [Symbios]City therefore aims at developing a multi-authored urban area with a rich identity that achieves a balance between the various elements. [Symbios]City began formally from topological optimization, developed based on studies on ecology, and concluded the design following our phenomenological explorations, aiming at a complex design project that unifies the perception of all scales of design: from the platform to the skyscrapers.

summary This paper explores the application of computer vision and machine learning to streetlevel imagery of cities, reevaluating past theory linking urban form to human perception. This paper further proposes a new method for design based on the resulting model, where a designer can identify areas of a city tied to certain perceptual qualities and generate speculative street scenes optimized for their predicted saliency on labels of human experience. This work extends Kevin Lynch’s Image of the City with deep learning: training an image classification model to recognize Lynch’s five elements of the city image, using Lynch’s original photographs and diagrams of Boston to construct labeled training data alongside new imagery of the same locations. This new city image revitalizes past attempts to quantify the human perception of urban form and improve urban design. A designer can search and map the data set to understand spatial opportunities and predict the quality of imagined designs through a dynamic process of collage, model inference, and adaptation. Within a larger practice of design, this work suggests that the curation of archival records, computer science techniques, and theoretical principles of urbanism might be integrated into a single craft. With a new city image, designers might “see” at the scale of the city, as well as focus on the texture, color, and details of urban life.

summary Gusto 501 is a multi-level Infill Building on the footprint of an old car garage. Surrounded by an overpass and former factories, the restaurant and event spaces take the form of a ‘Hyper garage’ as a nod to its urban context. The interior is punctuated with standard terracotta blocks formed to create an intricate play of shadows during the day and embedded with LEDs to provide atmospheric illumination at night. The client's vision, our narrative, and the program demanded an innovative use of the primal material: terracotta. The scale of the project required the use of 3,700 blocks. Within the array wrapped around a 50ft tall interior volume, each block needed to be formed and sequenced uniquely to maintain structural integrity and interface with building systems, and express the sculptural qualities our team had designed. Standard approaches to the masonry could not achieve the effects our team was striving for - we had to develop our ground-up process to manufacture and install mass-customized masonry. The design process involved an algorithmic approach to a series of cuts and geometric manipulations to the blocks that allowed for near-endless combinations/configurations to create a dynamic interior facade system. Partisans, partnering with a terracotta block manufacturer, a local mason, and a masonry engineer, pursued simplifying production using wire cutter systems. Digital and physical mock-ups were then used to create a robust library of parameterized design criteria that optimized corbelling, grout thickness, weight, and fabrication complexity. Working sets of drawings were automated through a fully integrated BIM model, simplifying and speeding up installation. The challenge of marrying these processes with the physical realities of installation required another level of collaboration that included the masons themselves and the electricians who would eventually combine lighting systems into the sculpted block array.

summary To walk represents one of the main ways of commuting, either by necessity or pleasure, it is a guaranteed way for everyone and it contributes significantly to the health and well-being of people. However, Medellín´s urban space design is not planned to improve walking conditions. In this context, a spatial index was built based on the components that influence the urban scene, which allows to evaluate the walking experience, not only its possibility, on an axis of the city. It concludes how these variables prioritize other actions and strategies that must be taken into consideration to build a walkable city.

summary In this paper, I present the commercial, urban-scale gunshot detection system ShotSpotter in contrast with a range of ecological sensing examples which monitor animal vocalizations. Gunshot detection sensors are used to alert law enforcement that a gunshot has occurred and to collect evidence. They are intertwined with processes of criminalization, in which the individual, rather than the collective, is targeted for punishment. Ecological sensors are used as a “passive” practice of information gathering which seeks to understand the health of a given ecosystem through monitoring population demographics, and to document the collective harms of anthropogenic change (Stowell and Sueur 2020). In both examples, the ability of sensing infrastructures to “join up and speed up” (Gabrys 2019, 1) is increasing with the use of machine learning to identify patterns and objects: a new form of expertise through which the differential agendas of these systems are implemented and made visible. I trace the differential agendas of these systems as they manifest through varied components: the spatial distribution of hardware in the existing urban environment and / or landscape; the software and other informational processes that organize and translate the data; the visualization of acoustical sensing data; the commercial factors surrounding the production of material components; and the apps, platforms, and other forms of media through which information is made available to different stakeholders. I take an interpretive and qualitative approach to the analysis of these systems as cultural artifacts (Winner 1980), to demonstrate how the political and social stakes of the technology are embedded throughout them.

summary Urban spatial patterns that can enhance the city's cultural, social, environmental, material and structural performance advance beyond the old notions of design patterns by incorporating the digital design. Pattern books such as "A Pattern Language" are revisited and toolboxes /toolkits are used in contemporary urban designs by laboratories and offices. The aim of this paper is to analyze the particularities and congruencies between some systems of patterns, pattern books, toolboxes and toolkits aimed at small public spaces, also considering the context of digital culture. The methodology proposed is the construction of a taxonomy that relates and classifies these selected patterns, by these following steps: a) selecting of patterns applicable to small public spaces; b) classification of patterns by "type" (location, behavior, processes and design components) and by "driven designs" approach (data-driven design, performance-driven design, and material- driven design) and relation to the recurrences of patterns between the systems; c) making and inserting in the taxonomy platform a table of elements and connections; d) filtering by classes for analysis. From the results obtained in the visualizations, it is possible to consider a larger volume of "location" type patterns and a smaller volume in "processes" indicating a field that can be developed.

summary The building and its urban environment are complex and dynamic data systems. Designers, who make design decisions, need the design tools to simulate the built environment, to estimate the feasibility of the design. However, the static modeling software, widely used nowadays, restricts the linkage relationship between the actual data environment and the simulation model, which lacks the dynamic constraint relationship and the construction of the loop order. Different from traditional modeling and analysis tools, simulation games, with dynamic constraint rules and real-time feedback operations, provide a new way of thinking and a perspective to observe the urban, which makes the simulation game be seen as a simplified analog system, to some extent. Therefore, this paper plan to builds a city model, based on an urban design project of an urban district of Nanjing as an example, by using the Cities: Skylines, a city simulation game with priority of traffic and zoning concept. Based on this dynamic model, the next step will evaluate the original project and carry out further optimization operations in real-time.

summary If we strive for a de-carbonized future, we need to think of buildings within a city as resources that can be re-used rather than being disposed of. Together with considerations on refurbishment options and future building materials, this gives a decision field for stakeholders which depends on the current "building stock" - the set of pre-existing buildings which are characterized e.g. by building period, location and material composition. Changes in that context are hard to argue for since (1.) some depend on statistics, other (2.) on the concrete neighborhood and thus the space in which buildings are embedded, yet again others on (3.) future extrapolations again dealing with both of the aforementioned environments. To date, there exists no tool that can handle this back-and-forth between different abstraction levels and horizons in time; nor is it possible to pursue such an endeavor without a proper framework. Which is why the authors of this paper are aiming to provide one, giving a model of change in the context of re-using material resource of the city, when faced with numerous abstraction levels (spatial or abstract; past, current or future) which have feedback loops between them. The paper focuses on a concrete case study in the city of Vienna, however, chances are high that this will apply to every other building stock throughout the world if enough data is available. As a matter of fact, this approach will ensure that argumentation can happen on multiple levels (spatial, statistical, past, now and future) but keeps its focus on making the building stock of a city a resource for sustainable development.

summary This paper uses the digital software platform to build an intelligent multi-agent system. Through the classification of site elements, the Shanghai North Bund waterfront public space elements are classified into different systems such as transportation hub facilities, catering facilities, shopping facilities and leisure venues. The main population activities in this area are classified into different activities such as youth activities, elderly activities, and family activities through user behavior classification. Finally, the intelligent multi-agent particle swarm is built by the dynamic simulation component of grasshopper, and its individual behavior rules and group interaction rules are adjusted to form the crowd moving particle flow. The particle flow interacts with the classified site elements to derive a distribution pattern of population activity in different systems. Particle flow data information and particle distribution patterns after interactive simulation can be the support for urban design evaluation and optimization.

Because quantifying the urban form at the macroscale is difficult, most of the relevant studies neglect or simplify the diversity of urban built areas. Local climate zone (LCZ) classification systems can transform macro urban form into a theme map composed of different LCZ classes, and such LCZ maps represent an effective urban form mapping technique, especially for built areas. However, this method still fails to provide a quantitative representation of the spatial characteristics. In this paper, the LCZ map is treated as a matrix composed of different patches and landscape pattern indices are applied to quantify the urban form. Taking 8 Chinese cities as case studies, the results show that 4 landscape scale indices and 4 class scale indices can effectively quantify the spatial characteristics of the urban form, including the area, shape, aggregation, and diversity. The quantitative spatial characteristics can provide a reference for urban design and management.

title Negotiating human engagement and the fixity of computational design: Toward a performative design space for the differently-abled bodymind

summary Computational design affords agency: the ability to orchestrate the material, spatial, and technical architectural system. In this specific case, it occurs through enhanced, authored means to facilitate making and performance—typically driven by concerns of structural optimization, material use, and responsivity to environmental factors—of an atmospheric rather than social nature. At issue is the positioning of this particular manner of agency solely with the architect auteur. This abruptly halts—at the moment in which fabrication commences—the ability to amend, redefine, or newly introduce fundamentally transformational constituents and their interrelationships and, most importantly, to explore the possibility for extraordinary outcomes. When the architecture becomes a functional, social, and cultural entity, in the hands of the idealized abled-bodied user, agency—especially for one of an otherly body or mind—is long gone. Even an empathetic auteur may not be able to access the motivations of the differently-abled body and neuro- divergent mind, effectively locking the constraints of the design process, which creates an exclusionary system to those beyond the purview of said auteur. It can therefore be deduced that the mechanisms or authors of a conventional computational design process cannot eradicate the exclusionary reality of an architectural system. Agency is critical, yet a more expansive terminology for agent and agency is needed. The burden to conceive of capacities that will always be highly temporal, social, unpredictable, and purposefully unknown must be shifted far from the scope of the traditional directors of the architectural system. Agency, and who it is conferred upon, must function in a manner that dissolves the distinctions between the design, the action of designing, the author of design, and those subjected to it.

summary The Saltatur (Dancer in Latin) demonstrates innovative research in the design and fabrication of a prefab structure consisting of spatial concrete nodes assembled in a compression-only configuration. The compression-only body is kept in equilibrium using the post-tensioning steel rods at the top and the bottom of the structure, supporting an ultra-thin glass structure on its top. A node-based assembly was considered as a method of construction. An innovative detailing was developed that allows locking each member in its exact location in the body, obviating the need for a particular assembly sequence. A bespoke steel connection transfers the tensile forces between the concrete members effectively. Achieving a high level of efficiency in utilizing concrete for spatial systems requires a robust and powerful structural design and fabrication approach that has been meticulously exhibited in this project. The structural form of the project was developed using a three-dimensional geometry-based structural design method known as 3D Graphic Statics with precise control over the magnitude of the lateral forces in the system. The entire concrete body of the structure is held in compression by the tension ties at the top and bottom of the structure with no horizontal reactions at the supports. This particular internal distribution of forces in the form of the compression-only body reduces the bending moment in the system and, therefore, the required mass to span such a distance.

summary Gridshells are highly efficient, lightweight structures which can span long distances with minimal use of material (Vassallo & Malek 2017). One of the most promising and novel categories of gridshells are bending-active (elastic) systems (Lienhard & Gengnagel 2018), which are composed of flexible members (Kuijenhoven & Hoogenboom 2012). Timber elastic gridshells can be site-sprung or sequentially erected (geodesic). While a lot of research focus is on the site-sprung ones, the methods for design of sequentially-erected geodesic gridshells remained underdeveloped (Cichocka 2020). The main objective of the paper is to introduce a method of generating regular geodesic grid patterns on free-form surfaces and to examine its applicability to design structurally feasible geodesic gridshells. We adopted differential geometry methods of generating regular bidirectional geodesic grids on free-form surfaces. Then, we compared the structural performance of the regular and the irregular grids of the same density on three free-form surfaces. The proposed method successfully produces the regular geodesic grid patterns on the free-form surfaces with varying curvature-richness. Our analysis shows that gridshells with regular grid configurations perform structurally better than those with irregular patterns. We conclude that the presented method can be readily used and can expand possibilities of application of geodesic gridshells.

summary Elementary robotics mechanisms based on the effective crank–slider and four–bar kinematics methods have been applied in the past to develop architectural concepts of reconfigurable structures of planar rigid-bar linkages (Phocas et al., 2020; Phocas et al., 2019). The applications referred to planar structural systems interconnected in parallel to provide reconfigurable buildings with rectangular plan section. In enabling structural reconfigurability attributes within the spatial circular section buildings domain, a vertical setup of the basic crank–slider mechanism is proposed in the current paper. The kinematics mechanism is integrated on a column placed at the middle of an axisymmetric circular shaped spatial linkage structure. The definition of target case shapes of the structure is based on a series of numerical geometric analyses that consider certain architectural and construction criteria (i.e., number of structural members, length, system height, span, erectability etc.), as well as structural objectives (i.e., structural behavior improvement against predominant environmental actions) aiming to meet diverse operational requirements and lightweight construction. Computer-aided algorithmic modelling is used to analyze the system's kinematics, in order to provide a solid foundation and enable rapid adaptation for mechanisms that exhibit controlled reconfigurations. The analysis demonstrates the implementation of digital parametric design tools for the investigation of the kinematics of the system at a preliminary design stage, in avoiding thus time-demanding numerical analysis processes. The design process may further provide enhanced interdisciplinary performance-based design outcomes.
