summary In this paper, we propose a geometry-based generative design method to generate and optimize a floor structure with funicular building members. This method challenges the antiquated column system, which has been used for more than a century. By inputting the floor plan with the positions of columns, designers can generate a variety of funicular supporting structures, expanding the choice of floor structure designs beyond simply columns and beams and encouraging the creation of architectural spaces with more diverse design elements. We further apply machine learning techniques (artificial neural networks) to evaluate and optimize the structural performance and constructability of the funicular structure, thus finding the optimal solutions within the almost infinite solution space. To achieve this, a machine learning model is trained and used as a fast evaluator to help the evolutionary algorithm find the optimal designs. This interdisciplinary method combines computer science and structural design, providing flexible design choices for generating floor structures.

summary In this paper, we present a speculative design concept for a mycelium-based living bio-hybrid architectural system. The system combines inoculated lignocellulosic substrates with soil-based 3d printed structures that function as growth scaffolds, material boundaries and spatial organisers. The primary objective of the system is to exploit mycelium as a living remediator of contaminated sites, in the form of architectural proposition. The feasibility of this concept is investigated in two ways: 1) material composition development and process control parameters for soil-based 3d printing, 2) the synthesis of printed prototypes to determine geometric and environmental parameters for promoting colonisation of mycelium and supporting its role as both structural binder and 'Mycorestoration' agent. This work is contextualised with reference to the state-of-the-art in order to identify the research gap and articulate the contribution of a mycelium-based remediating architecture. The merits and limits of the experimental results are reflected upon and trajectories of further investigation outlined.

summary Using an integrated workflow with parametric design, Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) and Fast Fluid Dynamic (FFD) simulations, structural analysis and optimization, this paper evaluates the relative suitability of CFD and FFD simulations for Aerodynamic Shape Optimization (ASO). Specifically, it applies RBFOpt, a model-based optimization algorithm, to the ASO of a supertall high-rise. The paper evaluates the accuracy of the CFD and FDD simulations relative to a slower, more exact CFD simulation, and the performance of the model-based optimization algorithm relative to CMA-ES, an evolutionary algorithm. We conclude that FFD is useful for relative comparisons, such as for optimization, but less accurate than CFD in terms of absolute quantities. Although results tend to be similar, CMA-ES performs less well than RBFOpt for both large and small numbers of simulations, and for both CFD and FFD. RBFOpt with FFD emerges as the most suitable method for conceptual design, as it is much faster and only slightly less effective than RBFOpt with CFD.

summary Deep learning is expected to offer new opportunities and a new paradigm for the field of architecture. One such opportunity is teaching neural networks to visually understand architectural elements from the built environment. However, the availability of large training datasets is one of the biggest limitations of neural networks. Also, the vast majority of training data for visual recognition tasks is annotated by humans. In order to resolve this bottleneck, we present a concept of a hybrid system—using both building information modeling (BIM) and hyperrealistic (photorealistic) rendering—to synthesize datasets for training a neural network for building object recognition in photos. For generating our training dataset, BIMrAI, we used an existing BIM model and a corresponding photorealistically rendered model of the same building. We created methods for using renderings to train a deep learning model, trained a generative adversarial network (GAN) model using these methods, and tested the output model on real-world photos. For the specific case study presented in this paper, our results show that a neural network trained with synthetic data (i.e., photorealistic renderings and BIM-based semantic labels) can be used to identify building objects from photos without using photos in the training data. Future work can enhance the presented methods using available BIM models and renderings for more generalized mapping and description of photographed built environments.

summary Every time an object is built, it creates a relationship with the ground. Architects have a full responsibility to design the building by taking the ground into consideration. In the field of architecture, using data mining to identify any unusual patterns or emergent architectural trends is a nascent area that has yet to be fully explored. Clustering techniques are an essential tool in this process for organising large datasets. In this paper, we propose a novel proof-of-concept workflow that enables a machine learning computer system to cluster aspects of an architect's building design style with respect to how the buildings in question relate to the ground. The experimental workflow in this paper consists of two stages. In the first stage, we use a database system to collect, organise and store several significant architectural precedents. The second stage examines the most well-known unsupervised learning algorithm clustering techniques which are: K-Means, K-Modes and Gaussian Mixture Models. Our experiments demonstrated that the K-means clustering algorithm method achieves a level of accuracy that is higher than other clustering methods. This research points to the potential of AI in helping designers identify the typological and topological characteristics of architectural solutions and place them within the most relevant architectural canons

summary This project aims to continue the correlative study between two fundamental entities of digital architecture: the object and the field. Following periods of experimentations on the ""field"" (materialization of flows of data through animation), the ""field of objects"" (parametricism), the ""object"" (OOO), we investigate the last possible interaction remaining: the ""object-field,"" by merging the formal characteristics of the object with the structural flow of its internal field. This investigation is achieved by exploring the high-resolution features of 3d printing in the design of autonomous architectural objects expressing materiality through topological optimization. The objects are generated by an iterative process of volumetric reduction, resulting in an ensemble of monoliths. Four of them are selected and analyzed through topological optimization in order to extract their internal fields. Next, a series of high-resolution algorithmic systems translate the structural information into 3d printed materiality. Of the four object-fields, one materializes, close to identical, the result of the optimization, giving the keystone to understanding the others. The second one expresses the structural flow through a 1mm voxel system, informed by the optimization, having the effect of stiffening the structure where it is needed and thus generating a new topography on the object. The last two explore the blur that this high-resolution can paradoxically create, with complete integration of the optimal structure in a transparent monolith. This is achieved by a vertex displacement algorithm, and the dissolution of the formal data of the monolith and the structural flows, through the mereological assembly of simple linear elements. For each object-field, a series of drawings was developed using specific algorithmic procedures derived from the peculiarities of their complex geometry. The drawings aim to catalyze coherence throughout the project, where similarities, hitherto kept apart by the multiple materialities, begin to dialogue.

title A framework for interactive human–robot design exploration

summary This study seeks to identify key aspects for increased integration of interactive robotics within the creative design process. Through its character as foundational research, the study aims to contribute to the advancement of new explorative design methods to support architects in their exploration of fabrication and assembly of an integrated performance-driven architecture. The article describes and investigates a proposed design framework for supporting an interactive human–robot design process. The proposed framework is examined through a 3-week architectural studio, with university master students exploring the design of a brick construction with the support of an interactive robotic platform. Evaluation of the proposed framework was done by triangulation of the authors’ qualitative user observations, quantitative logging of the students’ individual design processes, and through questionnaires completed after finishing the studies. The result suggests that interactive human–robot fabrication is a relevant mode of design with positive effect on the process of creative design exploration.

summary Algorithmic design (AD) uses algorithms to describe architectural designs, producing results that are visual by nature and greatly benefit from immersive visualization. Having this in mind, several approaches have been developed that allow architects to access and change their AD programs in virtual reality (VR). However, programming in VR introduces a new level of complexity that hinders creative exploration. Solutions based in visual programming offer limited parameter manipulation and do not scale well, particularly when used in a remote collaboration environment, while those based in textual programming struggle to find adequate interaction mechanisms to efficiently modify existing programs in VR. This research proposes to ease the programming task for architects who wish to develop and experiment with collaborative textual-based AD in VR, by bringing together the user-friendly features of visual programming and the flexibility and scalability of textual programming. We introduce an interface for the most common parametric changes that automatically generates the corresponding code in the AD program, and a hybrid programming solution that allows participants in an immersive collaborative design experience to combine textual programming with this new visual alternative for the parametric manipulation of the design. The proposed workflow aims to foster remote collaborative work in architecture studios, offering professionals of different backgrounds the opportunity to parametrically interact with textual-based AD projects while immersed in them.

summary Facade design is becoming increasingly complex, forcing architects to more frequently resort to analysis and optimization processes. However, these processes are time-consuming and require the coordination of multiple tools. Algorithmic Design (AD) has the potential to overcome these limitations through the use of algorithms implemented in Textual Programming Languages (TPLs) or Visual Programming Languages (VPLs). VPLs are more used in architecture due to their smoother learning curve and user-friendliness, but TPLs are better suited than VPLs for handling complex AD problems. To make TPLs more appealing to architects, we incorporated VPLs' features in the textual paradigm, namely, Visual Input Mechanisms (VIMs). In this paper, we propose an extension to an existing AD framework for the design exploration, analysis, and optimization of facades to support a TPL-based approach that handles VIMs.

summary In architectural design, evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithms (EMOA) have found use in numerous practical applications in which qualitative and quantitative aspects can be transformed into fitness functions to be optimized. This paper shows that they can be used in an architectural plan design process that starts from a more traditional approach. The benchmark case uses a novel construction system, called Ac.Ca. Building, with a vast architectural and technological database, arleady validated, to generate architectural plan for a residential towerbuilding with a parametric approach and EMOA. The proposed framework differs from past research because uses spatial units with high level of architectural and tecnological definition.

summary Algorithmic approaches are currently being introduced in many areas of human activity and architecture is no exception. However, designing with algorithms is a foreign concept to many and the inadequacy of current programming environments creates a barrier to the generalized adoption of Algorithmic Design (AD). This research aims to provide architects with a programming tool they feel comfortable with, while allowing them to fully benefit from AD's advantages in the creation of complex architectural models. We present Khepri.gh, a hybrid solution that combines Grasshopper, a visual programming environment, with Khepri, a flexible and scalable textual programming tool. Khepri.gh establishes a bridge between the visual and the textual paradigm, offering its users the best of both worlds while providing an extra set of advantages, including portability among CAD, BIM, and analysis tools.

summary This study examines the integration of space syntax into digital heritage practices to address key challenges in preserving historic urban landscapes. The research focuses on three primary issues: the lack of social and cultural integration, low user engagement, and insufficient interdisciplinary collaboration. The research question explores how space syntax can enhance the preservation of both spatial and cultural characteristics in heritage management. A systematic literature review was conducted across 5,694 documents published between 1983 and 2024, utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses methodology for rigorous data collection. The results reveal a substantial increase in relevant publications, with a 64% rise in the 1990s to 2000s and a 498% increase from 2000 to 2010. Geographic analysis shows significant contributions from Italy (16.6%) and China (13.9%). Keyword and thematic analyses highlight the growing intersection of space syntax with urban heritage preservation and cultural management. Key findings include the ability of space syntax to improve environmental management (r = 0.62, p < 0.01), digital modeling accuracy (85% by 2020), and community. The research advances heritage conservation by integrating space syntax with digital practices, proposing a framework for sustainable urban development with future focus on real-time monitoring and sustainable planning.

summary As a form of visual reasoning, sketching is a human cognitive activity instrumental to architectural design. In the process of sketching, abstract sketches invoke new mental imageries and subsequently lead to new sketches. This iterative transformation is repeated until the final design emerges. Artificial Intelligence and Deep Neural Networks have been developed to imitate human cognitive processes. Amongst these networks, the Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (cGAN) has been developed for image-to-image translation and is able to generate realistic images from abstract sketches. To mimic the cyclic process of abstracting and imaging in architectural concept design, a Cyclic-cGAN that consists of two cGANs is proposed in this paper. The first cGAN transforms sketches to images, while the second from images to sketches. The training of the Cyclic-cGAN is presented and its performance illustrated by using two sketches from well-known architects, and two from architecture students. The results show that the proposed Cyclic-cGAN can emulate architects' mode of visual reasoning through sketching. This novel approach of utilising deep neural networks may open the door for further development of Artificial Intelligence in assisting architects in conceptual design.

summary Non-structural or out-of-grade timber framing material contains a large proportion of visual and natural defects. A common strategy to recover usable material from these timbers is the marking and removing of defects, with the generated intermediate lengths of clear wood then joined into a single piece of fulllength structural timber. This paper presents a novel workflow that uses machine learning based image recognition and a computational decision-making algorithm to enhance the automation and efficiency of current defect identification and rejoining processes. The proposed workflow allows the knowledge of worker to be translated into a classifier that automatically recognizes and removes areas of defects based on image capture. In addition, a real-time optimization algorithm in decision making is developed to assign a joining sequence of fragmented timber from a dynamic inventory, creating a single piece of targeted length with a significant reduction in material waste. In addition to an industrial application, this workflow also allows for future inventory-constrained customizable fabrication, for example in production of non-standard architectural components or adaptive reuse or defect-avoidance in out-of-grade timber construction.

The platform includes communicating complex architectural project requirements; solution space exploration using different micro-tasks like sketching, 2D and 3D CAD; design selection; and design review as an evolutionary process. The architectural crowdsourcing model underlying the platform is contextualized in the state-of-the-art research on creative crowdsourcing methods and is supported by relevant evidence from empirical experiments. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the method to generate architectural artifacts by harnessing the skills, talents, and experience of architects and the opinions and values of the stakeholders.

summary In this paper we document progress towards an architectural framework for adaptive and distributed robotically assisted construction. Drawing from state-of-the-art reinforcement learning techniques, our framework allows for a variable number of robots to adaptively execute simple construction tasks. The paper describes the framework, demonstrates its potential through simulations of pick-and-place and spray-coating construction tasks conducted by a fleet of drones, and outlines a proof-of-concept experiment. With these elements the paper contributes to current research in architectural and construction robotics, particularly to efforts towards more adaptive and hybrid human-machine construction ecosystems. summary This paper explores and reflects on an integrative computational design thinking approach, which requires the melding of computation, design and theory as a conceptual framework, to be implemented in architectural education. Until now, digital design education is typically based on the introduction of digital tools and plugins at university courses and the subsequent application of these tools to design tasks of limited architectural complexity. At this time, technological advancement has not been matched by a comparable advancement in computational design thinking. The paper describes in detail a novel conceptual framework for course setup that illustrates the using of computational design as a manner of thinking in patterns of interaction across various scales, reaching from building design to regional planning. This approach was subsequently tested in a series of master-level studios, the results of which will be presented as case studies in this paper.

summary The 2020 pandemic has laid bare the ambiguous value of the virtual proximity that distributed computing enables. The remote interaction it ushered in at an unprecedented scale also spawned social isolation, which is symbolically underscored by the reliance of this form of connectivity on individuals’ discrete digital identification. This cyber-spatial dualism may be called ‘discrete continuity,’ and it already appeared in architectural thought in the 1960s with the advent of cybernetics and the first computers. The duality resurfaced in the 1990s in virtual projects, when architectural software was first widely commercialized, and it reappeared in built form in the past decade. This paper sheds light on the architectural aspects of this conceptual duality by identifying the use of discreteness and continuity in the theories of two Japanese architects, Hiroshi Hara (b.1936) and his former student, Kengo Kuma (b.1954), in their attempts to combine the two topological conditions as metaphors of societal structures. They demonstrate that the onset of the current condition, while new in its pervasiveness, has been latent in architectural thinking for several decades. This paper examines Hara’s and Kuma’s theories in light of the author’s interviews with the architects, their writings, and specific projects that illustrate metaphoric translations of topological terms into social structures, reflected in turn in the organization of urban schemes and building parts. While Hara’s and Kuma’s respective implementations are poles apart visually and materially, they share the idea that the discrete continuity of contemporary urban experience ought to be reflected in architecture. This link between their ideas has previously been overlooked.
