summary Built on a Situated Computations framework, this project explores preservation, reconfiguration, and presentation of heritage through immersive virtual experiences, and machine learning for new understandings and possibilities (Noel 2020; 2017; Leach and Campo 2022; Leach 2021). Using the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival - hereinafter referred to as Carnival - as a case study, Carnival + AI is a series of immersive experiences in design, culture, and artificial intelligence (AI). These virtual spaces create new digital modes of engaging with cultural heritage and reimagined designs of traditional sculptures in the Carnival (Noel 2021). The project includes three virtual events that draw on real events in the Carnival: (1) the Virtual Gallery, which builds on dancing sculptures in the Carnival and showcases AI-generated designs; (2) Virtual Jouvert built on Jouvert in Carnival with AI-generated Jouvert characters specific; and (3) Virtual Mas which builds on the masquerade.

title Sewing Pneumatic Textures - three-dimensional digital design based on the craft of dressmaking

summary This project explores a novel approach to digitally designing pneumatic membrane structures, utilizing traditional sewing methods from dressmaking. These sewn fabric manipulation techniques are commonly used to fit flat non-stretchy fabrics around the curvature of the body. The goal is to adapt these methods to create, shape, texture, and articulation on the pneumatic surfaces. This is in contrast with other research that is interested in creating smooth minimal surfaces with complex paneling patterns. The expression of textures explore engagement with tactility, addressing desires of playful touch and comfort within the built environment. Computer software for the fashion industry is used in the design process. The software has built in simulations and works with CAD-CAM software to produce patterns, which streamlines production and fabrication. The prototypes produced test the possibilities of these methods of sewing and the physical outputs for shape, tactility, and aesthetics.

summary The hybridization of architectural, biological and robotic agencies Situated in the field of architectural biodesign, InterspeciesForms explores a closer relationship between the fungus Pleurotus ostreatus and the designer in the creation of form. The intention of hybridizing mycelias agency of growth with architectural design intention is to generate novel, non-indexical crossbred designed outcomes that evolve preconceived notions of architectural form. Mycelium are threadlike fibrous root systems made up of hyphae, that form the vegetative part of a fungus (Jones 2020). Known as the hackers of the wood wide web (Simard 1997) mycelia form complex symbiotic relationships with other species that inhabit our earth. Michael Lim states Fungi redefine resourcefulness, collaboration, resilience and symbiosis (Lim 2022, p. 14). When wandering around the forest to connect with other species or searching for food, fungi form elaborate and entangled networks by spreading their hyphal tips. Shown in Figure 1, this living labyrinth results in the aesthetic formation of an intricate web. Due to the organisms ability to determine the most effective direction of growth, communicate with its surrounding ecosystem, and connect with other species, fungi are indeed an intelligent species with a unique aesthetic that must not be ignored. In drawing on these concepts, I refer to the organisms ability to search for, tangle, and digest its surroundings as mycelia agency of growth. It is this specific behavioral characteristic that is the focus of this research, with which I, as the architect, set out to co-create and hybridize with.

title Bridging Past and Present - Space syntax as a tool for digital heritage: A comprehensive literature review for integrating spatial analysis in heritage conservations

summary This study examines the integration of space syntax into digital heritage practices to address key challenges in preserving historic urban landscapes. The research focuses on three primary issues: the lack of social and cultural integration, low user engagement, and insufficient interdisciplinary collaboration. The research question explores how space syntax can enhance the preservation of both spatial and cultural characteristics in heritage management. A systematic literature review was conducted across 5,694 documents published between 1983 and 2024, utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses methodology for rigorous data collection. The results reveal a substantial increase in relevant publications, with a 64% rise in the 1990s to 2000s and a 498% increase from 2000 to 2010. Geographic analysis shows significant contributions from Italy (16.6%) and China (13.9%). Keyword and thematic analyses highlight the growing intersection of space syntax with urban heritage preservation and cultural management. Key findings include the ability of space syntax to improve environmental management (r = 0.62, p < 0.01), digital modeling accuracy (85% by 2020), and community. The research advances heritage conservation by integrating space syntax with digital practices, proposing a framework for sustainable urban development with future focus on real-time monitoring and sustainable planning.

summary In a climate where standard methods of construction are being challenged, developments in engineered timbers are allowing mass timber construction to be explored as a sustainable alternative to current building methods that can change the future of the built environment. Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is at the forefront of this evolution and, with the advancement in computational design and digital fabrication tools, there lies an opportunity to redefine standard construction. This project creates connections inspired by traditional Japanese joinery that have been adapted to be used for the panel construction of CLT structures. Using a combination of digital modelling and advanced digital fabrication, the project utilizes CLT offcuts as a primary connection material. The system not only reduces waste but also mitigates thermal bridging and lowers the number of connection points whilst increasing the ease of building and fabrication. Connection systems are designed and prototyped using a robotic arm and are then evaluated within the context of a building scale and considers large‐scale fabrication and on‐site assembly whilst continuing to focus on the reduction of waste.

summary The research work fueling this paper examines ?ptimal approaches for bridging design analysis and robotic spatial construction. In this context, the paper presents the development of a unified platform for managing a swarm of robotic fabrication agents. The goal is the development of a streamlined methodology that guides the conversion of a design model into construction data code that can be assigned to the robotic swarm for fabrication.The work focuses on bridging architectural design platforms and distributed automation processes, on the one hand, and on the other, it targets the development of a functional management tool for adjusting and optimizing fabrication. A crucial parameter considered is the monitoring and assessment of all stages of the proposed process. This involves a constant exchange of information between the various actors, such as the swarm agents, the construction data and the designer - user. As a result, the construction process is treated as a constant reassessment and re-adjustment of the design parameters rather than the linear result of the original set of construction data. Therefore, the proposed system cannot be described as reactive, but acts responsively in a ``sensible'' manner.

summary In this paper, we explore conditional generative adversarial networks (cGANs) as a new way of bridging the gap between design and analysis in contemporary architectural practice. By substituting analytical finite element analysis (FEA) modeling with cGAN predictions during the iterative design phase, we develop novel workflows that support iterative computational design and digital fabrication processes in new ways. This paper reports two case studies of increasing complexity that utilize cGANs for structural analysis. Central to both experiments is the representation of information within the data set the cGAN is trained on. We contribute a prototypical representational technique to encode multiple layers of geometric and performative description into false color images, which we then use to train a Pix2Pix neural network architecture on entirely digital generated data sets as a proxy for the performance of physically fabricated elements. The paper describes the representational workflow and reports the process and results of training and their integration into the design experiments. Last, we identify potentials and limits of this approach within the design processes.

summary In a complex urban scenario with a growing number of stakeholders and high dynamic developments, decision makers rely heavily on public data to make informed decisions. Often though, the available data is heterogeneous and stems from incomplete or inconsistent sources. The planning process, especially the definition of planning goals/needs, is often delayed due to time-consuming data procurement and assessment. This paper describes the development of the Cockpit Social Infrastructure (CoSI), a GIS-based planning support system that serves as an easy-access interface between Hamburgs Urban Data Platform GIS data infrastructure and the municipal planners for social infrastructure, bridging the gap between disciplines and facilitating communication and decision-making between stakeholders. CoSI takes full advantage of the UDP infrastructure and aims to introduce a city-wide tool for planners to conduct holistic, evidence-based planning, grounded in the latest and regularly updated statistical data. The paper outlines the project genesis and underlying technical and administrative structures.

summary Augmented Reality (AR) as a new technical tool has developed rapidly in the last few years and has now the potential of bridging the gap between holographic drawings and the real world. This paper addresses whether AR can guide unskilled labour on complex structure assembly and fabrication process. It contains three experiments developed with AR. The research aims to prove that with intuitive holographic instructions, AR helps to reduce the time spent in comparing 2D drawings to the real site during the assembly process, and therefore offers possibilities to improve the construction efficiency significantly. The research also paves the way for shell structures, considering the latest technology such as AR and AI, and gives emphasis on the communication between computer and human during the fabrication process through the physical model. It is an exploration of how people might change their mind or decisions can be changed in a real-time manner harmoniously using AI through AR.

summary This paper discusses novel methods for and advantages of integrating augmented reality (AR) and photogrammetry in hand clay-sculpting workflows. These techniques permit nontrained users to achieve higher precision during the sculpting process by holographically overlaying instructions from digital 3D source geometry on top of the sculpting material. By employing alternative notational systems in design implementation methods, the research positions itself in a postdigital context aimed at humanizing digital technologies. Throughout history, devices have been developed to increase production, such as Henry Dexters 1842 Apparatus for Sculptors for marble sculpting. Extrapolating from this, the workflow presented in this paper uses AR to overlay extracted information from 3D models directly onto the sculptors field of vision. This information can then become an AR-driven guidance system that assists the sculptor. Using the Microsoft HoloLens, holographic instructions are introduced in the production sequence, connecting the analog sculpture fabrication directly with a digital environment, thus augmenting the craftspeoples agency. A series of AR-aided sculpting methods were developed and tested in a demonstrator case study project that created a small-scale clay copy of Henry Moores Sheep Piece (19711972). This paper demonstrates how user-friendly software and hardware tools have lowered the threshold for end users to develop new methods that straightforwardly facilitate and improve their crafts effectiveness and agency. This shows that the fusion of computational design technology and AR visualization technology can innovate a specific crafts design and production workflow, opening the door for further application developments in more architecture-specific fabrication contexts.

summary This paper explores the application of computer vision and machine learning to streetlevel imagery of cities, reevaluating past theory linking urban form to human perception. This paper further proposes a new method for design based on the resulting model, where a designer can identify areas of a city tied to certain perceptual qualities and generate speculative street scenes optimized for their predicted saliency on labels of human experience. This work extends Kevin Lynchs Image of the City with deep learning: training an image classification model to recognize Lynchs five elements of the city image, using Lynchs original photographs and diagrams of Boston to construct labeled training data alongside new imagery of the same locations. This new city image revitalizes past attempts to quantify the human perception of urban form and improve urban design. A designer can search and map the data set to understand spatial opportunities and predict the quality of imagined designs through a dynamic process of collage, model inference, and adaptation. Within a larger practice of design, this work suggests that the curation of archival records, computer science techniques, and theoretical principles of urbanism might be integrated into a single craft. With a new city image, designers might see at the scale of the city, as well as focus on the texture, color, and details of urban life.

summary This practice-led research lies at the intersection of design, craft, materials science, and biology. Inspired by the responsive mechanism of plants biological actuators, and Nature's outstanding capacity of attaining maximal performances while using minimum resources. This thesis explores how to achieve a higher level of integration between the generation of form and behavior with its materialization and fabrication.This research proposes to endow a conventional laminar elastic material with unconventional behavior. Taking as inspiration plants biological actuators, which allows them to sense and adapt according to different environmental stimuli. We explored, developed, and fabricated a range of cellular structures (and in particular auxetics) that have out of the plane shape morphing capabilities, displaying a distinctive behavior in response to a design pattern (spatial cell arrangement) and an actuating force.The final design is a material/geometry-based actuator with reversible behavior, an active material with integrated tunable and responsive capacity which provides the capabilities to sense, adapt and respond to external stimuli within the structure of the material.

summary This paper presents research aimed at translating Ukiran Pasir Melela, traditional Balinese sand carving, into a new robotic-enabled framework for rapidly carving stiff but uncured cement sand blocks to create free-form and architecturally scalable unique volumetric elements. The research aims to reconsider vernacular materials and craft through their integration robotic manufacturing processes and how this activity can provide localized, low energy manufacturing solutions for building in the Anthropocene.Balinese sand carving shows potential advantages over current, and rather environmentally damaging, machining process primarily using soft materials state to make deep, smooth cuts into material with little torque. Transferring this manual and low-impact craft to robotic-enabled fabrication leverages heuristic knowledge developed over decades and opens possibilities for expanding and transforming these capabilities to increase the variability of potential future applications.

title Augmented drawn construction symbols: A method for ad hoc robotic fabrication

summary The global construction industry is one the least productive sectors over a 30-year period, which arguably could be related to virtually no implementation of digital and automation technologies within the construction industry. Construction processes arguably consist of expensive manual labor or manual operation of mechanized processes, where hand-drawn markings on work-objects or partly build structures are used to inform and steer the construction process or allows for ad hoc adjustments of elements. As such, the use of on-object, hand-drawn information is considered integral to the modus operandi of a plurality of construction trades, where timber construction and carpentry are of special interest. In contrast, emerging methods of digital production in timber construction implicitly or explicitly seek to eliminate the interpretive component to the construction work, imposing a top-down paradigm of file-to-factory execution. While such systems offer a performance increase compared to manual labor, it is notoriously sensitive to construction tolerances and requires a high level of specialism to be operated, which could alienate craft-educated workers. This research argues that developing methods for digital production compatible with on- site human interpretation and adaptation can help overcome these challenges. In addition, these methods offer the opportunity to increase the robustness and versatility of digital fabrication in the context of the construction site. The article reports on a new method titled augmented drawn construction symbols that through a visual communication system converts on-object hand-drawn markings to CAD drawings and sends them to a robotic system. The process is demonstrated on a full-scale prototypical robot setup.

summary The profession of a carpenter is changing significantly. Over the last 20-30 years, CNC-joinery machines became ready to penetrate the market and lead to a significant optimization of daily processes in these firms. In this case study, we take a closer look at the working techniques of a carpenter in the Bregenzerwald. This skilled craftsman found a way, of how to translate his expert knowledge on to a CNC-joinery machine. Instead of only following modern, simplified construction methods, he tried to revive historic methods and developed a way to translate his expertise. By scaling up on a technological basis, he was able to reintroduce the so-called 'Dovetail joint' and by that managed to erect the first proof of concept, a single-family house. This research shows, how a new integrated robot enables a way of manufacturing, that otherwise might not be affordable anymore. Benefits of this approach can be seen on a variety of economic and ecologic aspects. As mentioned by the carpenter, these results are encouraging, but for him, the real advantage is the increased empowerment to skill, craft and knowledge typical for his profession.

summary Recent advancements in robotics allow architects to explore the coupling of manual craft with digital tools. However, current methods remain limited in addressing high-skill, custom tasks involving material uncertainty. In this context, the paper presents three capacities that stand at the core of performing autonomous robotic craft. These include documenting the movements and gestures of local stone craftsmen; augmenting the robotic system with a custom end effector and a sensor toolkit; and enhancing the fabrication process through a protocol that translates the documented data to an autonomous process. The three capacities aid in preserving local crafts, expanding robotic tools with new capabilities, and enabling architectural fabrication with a broader range of materials.

summary This paper introduces ideas to use Mixed Reality (MR) technologies in craftsman's work of architecture.One of the backgrounds of this study is emerging technology of Mixed Reality becoming much easier to use recently with new devices such as Microsoft Hololens. Among many possible applications of this technique in architectural work, we particularly choose Japanese traditional timber joinery 'Kumiki' as a model case of complicated architectural work.We found that people need a certain sense of 3D recognition and knowledge about right order of assemble. That is what we can suggest for users with our MR guidance system named 'Holonavi' which can show appropriate information in 3D vision in real time. The aim of our research is to find useful knowledge about effective ways and sufficient information to guide users. As a conclusion, we found that guidance with MR technology gives users to have a recognition more effectively for take of right action when they are moving their viewpoint around the object and when they located in the range of reachable distance to the objects. It is the first achievement for use of 'Holonavi' to let people feel more fun to craft something by their hands aided by computer.

summary Bio-fabrication of materials opens up novel opportunities for designers to innovate the functional possibilities of the designed output through variations in fabrication processes. Literature has seen an increased interest in this emerging material design practice that has recently been defined as growing design (Myers 2012). Our research work expands on the definition of this emerging material design practice to engage digital design and fabrication procedures in the intersection of biology, craft, and design. The aim is to cultivate a new material typeknitted textile mycelium composite that has the capability to augment final material composite properties and provide formal freedom to designers. 3D CNC knitting enables the fabrication of knitted textile that has control over the specificity of each knit loop, opening up design possibilities to grade functional differentiation when the knitted textile is used as a sacrificial mold for the cultivation of mycelium composite. The research presents various design-to-fabrication workflows that facilitate working with the indeterminate nature of 3D-knitted membrane and the dynamic nature of cultivating mycelium composite growth. Two architecture-scale prototype units were fabricated and cultivated, demonstrating the range of design freedom for this new material type.

title Developing a fabrication workflow for irregular sawlogs

summary In this article, we suggest using contemporary manufacturing technologies to integrate material properties with architectural design tools, revealing new possibilities for the use of wood in architecture. Through an investigative approach, material capacities and fabrication methods are explored and combined towards establishing new workflows and architectural expressions, where material, fabrication and result are closely interlinked. The experimentation revolves around discarded, crooked oak logs, doomed to be used as firewood due to their irregularity. This project treats their diverging shapes differently by offering unique processing to each log informed by its particularities. We suggest here a way to use the natural forms and properties of sawlogs to generate new structures and spatial conditions. In this article, we discuss the scope of this approach and provide an example of a workflow for handling the discrete shapes of natural sawlogs in a system that involve the collection of material, scanning/digitisation, handling of a stockpile, computer analysis, design and robotic manufacturing. The creation of this specific method comes from a combination of investigation of wood as a material, review of existing research in the field, studies of the production lines in the current wood industry and experimentation through our in-house laboratory facilities. As such, the workflow features several solutions for handling the complex and different shapes and data of natural wood logs in a highly digitised machining and fabrication environment. This up-cycling of discarded wood supply establishes a non-standard workflow that utilises non-standard material stock and leads to a critical articulation of todays linear material economy. The project becomes part of an ambition to reach sustainable development goals and technological innovation in global and resource-intensive architecture and building industry.
