summary Climate change continues to have noticeable and accelerated impacts on various territories. Previously predictable and recognizable patterns used by humans and nonhumans alike are perpetually being altered, turning localized signals into noise and effectively disrupting indigenous modes of life. While the use of certain technologies such as data collection, machine learning, and automation can render these otherwise patternless information streams into intelligible content, they are generally associated as being “territorializing,” as an increase in resolution generally lends itself to control, exploitation, and colonization. Contrarily, indigenous groups with long-lasting relationships that have evolved over time have distinct ways of reading and engaging with their contexts, developing sustainable practices that, while effective, are often overlooked as being compatible with contemporary tools. This paper examines how the use of traditionally territorializing technologies can be paired with indigenous knowledge and protocols in order to operate between signal and noise, rendering perverse changes in the landscape comprehensible while also presenting their applications as a facet for sociopolitical, cultural, and ecological adaptation. A methodology defined as “decoding” and “recoding” presents four distinct case studies in the Arctic, addressing various scales and targets with the aim of disrupting current trends in order to grant and/or retain autonomy through what can be read as a form of preservation via augmented adaptation.

summary Globally, the built environment is inequitable. And while construction automation is often heralded as the solution to labor shortages and the housing crisis, such methods tend to focus on technology, neglecting the wider socioeconomic contexts. Automated Architecture (AUAR), a spinoff of AUAR Labs at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, asserts that a values-centered, decentralized approach to automation centered around local communities can begin to address this material hegemony. The paper introduces and discusses AUAR’s platform-based framework, Discrete Automation, which subverts the status quo of automation that excludes those who are already disadvantaged into an inclusive network capable of providing solutions to both the automation gap and the assembly problem. Through both the wider context of existing modular housing platforms and issues of the current use of automated technologies in architectural production, Discrete Automation is discussed through the example of Block Type A, a discrete timber building system, which in conjunction with its combinatorial app constitutes the base of a community-led housing platform developed by AUAR. Built case studies are introduced alongside a discussion of the applied methodologies and an outlook on the platform’s potential for scalability in an equitable, sustainable manner.

summary Aviation is in flux, experiencing 5.4% yearly growth over the last two decades. However, with COVID-19 aviation was hard hit. This, along with its contribution to global warming, has led to louder calls to limit its use. This situation emphasizes how urban planners and technologists could contribute to understanding and responding to this change. This paper explores a novel workflow of performing image-based machine learning (ML) on satellite images of over 1,000 world airports that were algorithmically collated using European Space Agency Sentinel2 API. From these, the top 350 United States airports were analyzed with land use parameters extracted around the airport using computer vision, which were mapped against their passenger footfall numbers. The results demonstrate a scalable approach to identify how easy and beneficial it would be for certain airports to expand or contract and how this would impact the surrounding urban environment in terms of pollution and congestion. The generic nature of this workflow makes it possible to potentially extend this method to any large infrastructure and compare and analyze specific features across a large number of images while being able to understand the same feature through time. This is critical in answering key typology-based urban design challenges at a higher level and without needing to perform on-ground studies, which could be expensive and time-consuming.

summary This paper presents a novel human-machine collaborative approach to automatic quality-control of Glass-Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) molds directly on the factory floor. The framework introduces Industry 4.0 technologies to enhance the ability of skilled craftsmen to make molds through the provision of horizontal feedback regarding dimensional tolerances. Where digital tools are seldom used in the fabrication of GFRC molds, and expert craftsmen are not digital experts, our implementation of automated registration and feedback processes enables craftsmen to be integrated into and gain value from the digital production chain. In this paper, we describe the in-progress framework, Precision Partner, which connects 3d scanning and point cloud registration of geometrically complex and varied one off elements to factory floor dimensional feedback. We firstly introduce the production context of GFRC molds, as well as industry standards for production feedback. We then detail our methods, and report the results of a case study that tests the framework on the case of a balcony element.

summary The quality of an urban space significantly influences the habitability of a city. In an era where buildings are becoming more and more "intelligent", outdoor space needs to evolve to make it more welcoming and to allow it to be shared and appropriate, capable of expanding opportunities and functionality for the inhabitant who lives in it. In this context the COGITO project, is exploring ways to extend the cognitive logic typical of intelligent buildings to the urban space. We propose to appropriate the model developed in COGITO and apply it in a case study of the city of Medellin.

summary Virtual prototypes enable performance simulation for building components. The presented research extended the application of generative design using virtual prototypes for interactive optimisation of structural nodes. User-interactivity contributed to the geometric definition of design spaces rather than the final geometric outcome, enabling another stage of generative design for the micro-structure of the structural node. In this stage, the micro-structure inside the design space was generated using fixed topology. In contrast to common optimisation strategies, which converge towards a single optimal outcome, the presented design exploration process allowed the regular review of design solutions. User-based selection guided the evolutionary process of design space exploration applying Online Classification. Another guidance mechanism called Shape Comparison introduced an intelligent control system using an inital image input as design reference. In this way, aesthetic guidance enabled the combined evaluation of quantitative and qualitative criteria in the custom-optimisation of structural nodes. Interactive node design extended the potential for shape variation of custom-optimized structural nodes by addressing the geometric definition of design spaces for multi-scalar structural optimisation.

title CREASE: Synchronous gait by minimizing actuation through folded geometry

summary The Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution promises the integration and synergy of disciplines to arrive at meaningful and comprehensive solutions. As computation and fabrication methods become pervasive, they present platforms for communication. Value exists in diverse disciplines bringing their approach to a common conversation, proposing demands, and potentials in response to entrenched challenges. Robotics has expanded recently as computational analysis, and digital fabrication methods are more accurate and reliable. Advances in functional microelectromechanical components have resulted in the design of new robots presenting alternatives to traditional ambulatory robots. However, most examples are the result of intense computational analysis necessitating engineering expertise and specialized manufacturing. Accessible fabrication methods like laminate techniques propose alternatives to new robot morphologies. However, most examples remain overly actuated without harnessing the full potential of folds for locomotion. Our research explores the connection between origami structures and kinematics for the generation of an ambulatory robot presenting efficient, controlled, and graceful gait with minimal use of components. Our robot ‘Crease’ achieves complex gait by harnessing kinematic origami chains rather than relying on motors. Minimal actuation activates the folds to produce variations in walk and direction. Integrating a physical iterative process with computational analysis, several prototypes were generated at different scales, including untethered ones with sensing and steering that could map their environment. Furthering the dialogue between disciplines, this research contributes not only to the field of robotics but also architectural design, where efficiency, adjustability, and ease of fabrication are critical in designing kinetic elements.

summary Automated processing, semantic enrichment and visual analytics methods for point clouds are often use-case specific for a given domain (e.g, for Facility Management (FM) applications). Currently, this means that applicable processing techniques, semantics and visual analytics methods need to be selected, generated or implemented by human domain experts, which is an error-prone, subjective and non-interoperable process. An ontology-driven analytics approach can be used to solve this problem by creating and maintaining a Knowledge Base, and utilizing an ontology for automatically suggesting optimal selection of processing and analytics techniques for point clouds. We present an approach of an ontology-driven analytics concept and system design, which supports smart representation, exploration, and processing of indoor point clouds. We present and provide an overview of high-level concept and architecture for such a system, along with related key technologies and approaches based on previously published case studies. We also describe key requirements for system components, and discuss the feasibility of their implementation within a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA).

title Developing a fabrication workflow for irregular sawlogs

summary In this article, we suggest using contemporary manufacturing technologies to integrate material properties with architectural design tools, revealing new possibilities for the use of wood in architecture. Through an investigative approach, material capacities and fabrication methods are explored and combined towards establishing new workflows and architectural expressions, where material, fabrication and result are closely interlinked. The experimentation revolves around discarded, crooked oak logs, doomed to be used as firewood due to their irregularity. This project treats their diverging shapes differently by offering unique processing to each log informed by its particularities. We suggest here a way to use the natural forms and properties of sawlogs to generate new structures and spatial conditions. In this article, we discuss the scope of this approach and provide an example of a workflow for handling the discrete shapes of natural sawlogs in a system that involve the collection of material, scanning/digitisation, handling of a stockpile, computer analysis, design and robotic manufacturing. The creation of this specific method comes from a combination of investigation of wood as a material, review of existing research in the field, studies of the production lines in the current wood industry and experimentation through our in-house laboratory facilities. As such, the workflow features several solutions for handling the complex and different shapes and data of natural wood logs in a highly digitised machining and fabrication environment. This up-cycling of discarded wood supply establishes a non-standard workflow that utilises non-standard material stock and leads to a critical articulation of today’s linear material economy. The project becomes part of an ambition to reach sustainable development goals and technological innovation in global and resource-intensive architecture and building industry.

summary The degree of geometric complexity a concrete element can assume is directly linked to our ability to fabricate its formwork. Additive manufacturing allows fabrication of freeform formwork and expands the design possibilities for concrete elements. In particular, fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing of thermoplastic is a useful method of formwork fabrication due to the lightweight properties of the resulting formwork and the accessibility of FDM 3D printing technology. The research in this area is in early stages of development, including several existing efforts examining the 3D printing of a single material for formwork— including two medium-scale projects using PLA and PVA. However, the performance of 3D printed formwork and its geometric complexity varies, depending on the material used for 3D printing the formwork. To expand the existing research, this paper reviews the opportunities and challenges of using 3D printed thermoplastic formwork for fabricating custom concrete elements using multiple thermoplastic materials. This research cross-references and investigates PLA, PVA, PETG, and the combination of PLA-PVA as formwork material, through the design and fabrication of nonstandard structural concrete columns. The formwork was produced using robotic pellet extrusion and filament-based 3D printing. A series of case studies showcase the increased geometric freedom achievable in formwork when 3D printing with multiple materials. They investigate the potential variations in fabrication methods and their print characteristics when using different 3D printing technologies and printing materials. Additionally, the research compares speed, cost, geometric freedom, and surface resolution.

summary The Perceptions of Depth and Distance are considered as two of the most important factors in Virtual Reality Environments, as these environments inevitability impact the perception of the virtual content compared with the one of real world. Many studies on depth and distance perceptions in a virtual environment exist. Most of them were conducted using Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) and less with large screen displays such as those of Cave Automatic Virtual Environments (CAVEs). In this paper, we make a comparison between the different aspects of perception in the architectural environment between CAVE systems and HMD. This paper clarifies the Virtual Object as an entity in a VE and also the pros and cons of using CAVEs and HMDs are explained. Eventually, just a first survey of the planned case study of the artificial port of the Trajan emperor near Fiumicino has been done as for COVID-19 an on-field experimentation could not have been performed.

summary The planning quality of refugee camps profoundly affects the people living there. Because of the short time span allotted to planners due to the state of emergency, camps are often poorly planned or not planned at all. This paper proposes tools and methods developed through computational modelling algorithms that can enhance the design procedure and provide instant feedback about the plan performance to the planner. The developed planning framework allows defining the planning guidelines which will be tested for compliance. The paper also shows case studies of analysing an existing refugee camp.

summary The cities are equipped with the data as a result of the individuals' sharings and application usage. This significant amount of data has the potential to reveal relations and support user-centric decision making. The focus of the research is to examine the relational factors of the neighborhoods' popularity by implementing a big data approach to contribute to the problem of urban areas' degradation. This paper presents an exploratory urban analysis for Eindhoven at the neighborhood level by considering variables of popularity: density and diversity of points of interest (POI), accessibility, and perceptual qualities. The multi-sourced data are composed of geotagged photos, the location and types of POIs, travel time data, and survey data. These different datasets are evaluated using BBN (Bayesian Belief Network) to understand the relationships between the parameters. The results showed a positive and relatively high connection between popularity - population change, accessibility by walk - density of POIs, and the feeling of safety - social cohesion. For further studies, this approach can contribute to the decision-making process in urban development, specifically in real estate and tourism development decisions to evaluate the land prices or the hot-spot touristic places.

summary In digital design-to-fabrication workflows in architecture, in which digitally controlled machines perform complex fabrication tasks, all design decisions are typically made before production. In such processes, the formal definition of the final shape is explicitly inscribed into the design model by means of corresponding step-by-step machine instructions. The increasing use of augmented reality (AR) technologies for digital fabrication workflows, in which people are instructed to carry out complex fabrication tasks via AR interfaces, creates an opportunity to question and adjust the level of detail and the nature of such explicit formal definitions. People’s cognitive abilities could be leveraged to integrate explicit machine intelligence with implicit human knowledge and creativity, and thus to open up digital fabrication to intuitive and spontaneous design decisions during the building process. To address this question, this paper introduces open-ended Prototype-as-Artefact fabrication workflows that examine the possibilities of designing and creative choices while building in a human-robot collaborative setting. It describes the collaborative assembly of a complex timber structure with alternating building actions by two people and a collaborative robot, interfacing via a mobile device with object tracking and AR visualization functions. The spatial timber assembly being constructed follows a predefined grammar but is not planned at the beginning of the process; it is instead designed during fabrication. Prototype-as-Artefact thus serves as a case study to probe the potential of both intuitive and rational aspects of building and to create new collaborative work processes between humans and machines.

summary In the scope of Industry 4.0, a framework is proposed to leverage the potential of articulating Augmented Reality and Robotic Manufacturing in the construction industry. The objective of such framework is to enable robots to learn how to perform tasks using direct interaction with human operators. As a first step, we established a connection between a robot and its trainer— or controller—in which the robot mirrors the operator’s actions. Augmented Reality hardware is used for capturing the trainer’s gestures and the surrounding environment. A digital tool was implemented using Grasshopper and additional plugins to control the process.

summary This project presents a novel fabrication-aware and performance-driven computational design method that facilitates the design and robotic fabrication of a wood shingle facade system. The research merges computational design, robotic fabrication, and building facade optimization into a seamless digital design-to-fabrication workflow. The research encompasses the following topics: (1) a constructive system integrating the rules, constraints, and dependencies of conventional shingle facades; (2) an integrative computational design method incorporating material, robotic fabrication, and assembly constraints; (3) an optimization method for facade sun shading; and (4) a digital design-to-fabrication workflow informing the robotic fabrication procedures. The result is an integrative computational design method for the design of a wood shingle facade. Environmental analysis and multi-objective optimization are coupled with a variable facade surface to produce several optimal design solutions that conform to the constraints of the robotic setup and constructive system. When applied to architectural design, the proposed integrative computational design method demonstrates significant improvements in facade sun-shading performance while also linking the digital design to the fabrication process.

summary The paper presents design-integrated methods for high-resolution specification and prediction of functionally graded wood-based thermal responsive composites, using machine learning. The objective is the development of new circular design workflow, employing robotic fabrication, in order to predict fabrication files linked to material performance and design requirements, focused on application for intrinsic responsive and adaptive architectural surfaces. Through an experimental case study, the paper explores how machine learning can form a predictive design framework where low-resolution data can solve material systems at high resolution. The experimental computational and prototyping studies show that the presented image-based machine learning method can be adopted and adapted across various stages and scales of architectural design and fabrication. This in turn allows for a design-per-requirement approach that optimizes material distribution and promotes material economy.

summary This paper explores and reflects on an integrative computational design thinking approach, which requires the melding of computation, design and theory as a conceptual framework, to be implemented in architectural education. Until now, digital design education is typically based on the introduction of digital tools and plugins at university courses and the subsequent application of these tools to design tasks of limited architectural complexity. At this time, technological advancement has not been matched by a comparable advancement in computational design thinking. The paper describes in detail a novel conceptual framework for course setup that illustrates the using of computational design as a manner of thinking in patterns of interaction across various scales, reaching from building design to regional planning. This approach was subsequently tested in a series of master-level studios, the results of which will be presented as case studies in this paper.

summary This research project was part of the design and construction of the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers (MEL) at the University of Virginia (UVA). The MEL was dedicated to an estimated 4,000 enslaved persons who worked at UVA between 1817 and 1865. The 80-foot-diameter memorial is a tapered toroidal shape composed of 75 stone blocks. This project demonstrates how computational design tools along with robotic digital fabrication can be used to achieve unique social and experiential effects in an architectural application. The memorial’s design was informed by an extensive community engagement process that clarified the importance of including a visual representation of enslaved people on the memorial. With this input, the eyes of Isabella Gibbons were selected to be used as a symbolic representation of triumph on the outer wall of the memorial. The MEL project could not rely solely on prior methods or existing software applications to design and fabricate this portrait due to four particularities of the project: material, geometry, representation, and scale. To address these challenges, the MEL design team employed an interdisciplinary collaborative process to develop an innovative parametric design technique: parametric photo V-carve. This technique allowed the MEL design team to render a large-scale photo-realistic portrait into stone. This project demonstrates how the synthesis of artistic motivations, computational design, and robotic digital fabrication can develop unique expressions that shape personal and cultural experiences.
