summary In the study, the ant colony behavior was simulated to establish a parametric multi-agent system with independent consensus "Stigmergy" for interaction with the site. In the experiment, the initial points of the particles correspond to the key historical buildings, and the target points correspond to the important public space nodes. Edit and adjust the motion characteristics, search features, generation and disappearance characteristics of the simulated particles to obtain the main consensus particle swarm distribution and the distributed consensus particle swarm distribution. This form has a compliant or conflicting relationship with the existing urban environment. Using the contours of the self-consensus spatial form, the particle swarm density, and the pointing relationship between the particles and the building can provide a basis for the transformation and renewal of the existing urban environment, thus forming a spatial transformation strategy that more closely matches the user behavior in the space.

summary The extensive application of Python script provides a new opportunity for the research on spatial distribution of mass sports facilities. The traditional way to obtain geography information of POI is by the crawler of API open platform, which needs accurate search content. Therefore, it is difficult to obtain the geography information of the mass sports facilities, which do not have specific category name. The paper took Harbin City in China as an example, combined the social network address text crawler and map websites crawler, accurately obtained the geographic information of mass sports facilities, and used ArcGIS to realize the visualization of the spatial distribution information. Combined with the information of Harbin population distribution, the paper evaluated the quantity spatial distribution and type spatial distribution of mass sports facilities by Lorentz curve and Global Moran's I, aiming to evaluate the health service performance of existing mass sports facilities and provide reference for the design and planning of sports facilities. The paper draws the conclusion that the distribution of mass sports buildings in Harbin is relatively average with the population distribution and the clustering of sports function types of mass sports buildings is obvious.

summary Spatial characteristics are significant for urban form studies. Because quantifying the urban form at the macroscale is difficult, most of the relevant studies neglect or simplify the diversity of urban built areas. Local climate zone (LCZ) classification systems can transform macro urban form into a theme map composed of different LCZ classes, and such LCZ maps represent an effective urban form mapping technique, especially for built areas. However, this method still fails to provide a quantitative representation of the spatial characteristics. In this paper, the LCZ map is treated as a matrix composed of different patches and landscape pattern indices are applied to quantify the urban form. Taking 8 Chinese cities as case studies, the results show that 4 landscape scale indices and 4 class scale indices can effectively quantify the spatial characteristics of the urban form, including the area, shape, aggregation, and diversity. The quantitative spatial characteristics can provide a reference for urban design and management.

title Negotiating human engagement and the fixity of computational design: Toward a performative design space for the differently-abled bodymind

summary Computational design affords agency: the ability to orchestrate the material, spatial, and technical architectural system. In this specific case, it occurs through enhanced, authored means to facilitate making and performance—typically driven by concerns of structural optimization, material use, and responsivity to environmental factors—of an atmospheric rather than social nature. At issue is the positioning of this particular manner of agency solely with the architect auteur. This abruptly halts—at the moment in which fabrication commences—the ability to amend, redefine, or newly introduce fundamentally transformational constituents and their interrelationships and, most importantly, to explore the possibility for extraordinary outcomes. When the architecture becomes a functional, social, and cultural entity, in the hands of the idealized abled-bodied user, agency—especially for one of an otherly body or mind—is long gone. Even an empathetic auteur may not be able to access the motivations of the differently-abled body and neuro- divergent mind, effectively locking the constraints of the design process, which creates an exclusionary system to those beyond the purview of said auteur. It can therefore be deduced that the mechanisms or authors of a conventional computational design process cannot eradicate the exclusionary reality of an architectural system. Agency is critical, yet a more expansive terminology for agent and agency is needed. The burden to conceive of capacities that will always be highly temporal, social, unpredictable, and purposefully unknown must be shifted far from the scope of the traditional directors of the architectural system. Agency, and who it is conferred upon, must function in a manner that dissolves the distinctions between the design, the action of designing, the author of design, and those subjected to it.

summary The Saltatur (Dancer in Latin) demonstrates innovative research in the design and fabrication of a prefab structure consisting of spatial concrete nodes assembled in a compression-only configuration. The compression-only body is kept in equilibrium using the post-tensioning steel rods at the top and the bottom of the structure, supporting an ultra-thin glass structure on its top. A node-based assembly was considered as a method of construction. An innovative detailing was developed that allows locking each member in its exact location in the body, obviating the need for a particular assembly sequence. A bespoke steel connection transfers the tensile forces between the concrete members effectively. Achieving a high level of efficiency in utilizing concrete for spatial systems requires a robust and powerful structural design and fabrication approach that has been meticulously exhibited in this project. The structural form of the project was developed using a three-dimensional geometry-based structural design method known as 3D Graphic Statics with precise control over the magnitude of the lateral forces in the system. The entire concrete body of the structure is held in compression by the tension ties at the top and bottom of the structure with no horizontal reactions at the supports. This particular internal distribution of forces in the form of the compression-only body reduces the bending moment in the system and, therefore, the required mass to span such a distance.

summary Print-Cast Concrete investigates concrete 3D printing utilizing robotically fabricated recyclable green sand molds for the fabrication of thin shell architecture. The presented process expedites the production of doubly curved concrete geometries by replacing traditional formwork casting or horizontal corbeling with spatial concrete arching by developing a three-dimensional extrusion path for deposition. Creating robust non-zero Gaussian curvature in concrete, this method increases fabrication speed for mass customized elements eliminating two-part mold casting by combining robotic 3D printing and extrusion casting. Through the casting component of this method, concrete 3D prints have greater resolution along the edge condition resulting in tighter assembly tolerances between multiple aggregated components. Print-Cast Concrete was developed to produce a full-scale architectural installation commissioned for Exhibit Columbus 2019. The concrete 3D printed compression shell spanned 12 meters in length, 5 meters in width, and 3 meters in height and consisted of 110 bespoke panels ranging in weight of 45 kg to 160 kg per panel. Geometrical constraints were determined by the bounding box of compressed sand mold blanks and tooling parameters of both CNC milling and concrete extrusion. Using this construction method, the project was able to be assembled and disassembled within the timeframe of the temporary outdoor exhibit, produce <1% of waste mortar material in fabrication, and utilize 60% less material to construct than cast-in-place construction. Using the sand mold to contain geometric edge conditions, the Print-Cast technique allows for precise aggregation tolerances. To increase the pavilions resistance to shear forces, interlocking nesting geometries are integrated into each edge condition of the panels with .785 radians of the undercut. Over extruding strategically during the printing process casts the undulating surface with accuracy. When nested together, the edge condition informs both the construction logic of the panel’s placement and orientation for the concrete panelized shell.

summary Net-to-gross efficiency is defined as the ratio of net area to a gross area of a building. Net-to-gross efficiency will determine the quantity of leasable building area. On the other side, the effectiveness of the spatial distribution of a floor plan design must follow the value of net-to-gross efficiency. Therefore in the context of office design, there are two challenges need to be improved: 1) to get an optimum value of efficiency, architects need to assign the amount and size of the office units which can be effectively arranged, and 2) to fulfill high net-to-gross efficiency value that usually set out at minimal 85%. This paper aims to apply the packing algorithm as a strategy to achieve optimum net-to-gross efficiency and generating spatial configuration of office units that fit with the result. Our study experimented with series of models and simulations consisting of three stages that start from finding net-to-gross efficiency, defining office unit profiles based on preferable office space units, and applying the packing algorithm to get an optimum office net-to-gross efficiency. Computational processes using physics engine and optimization solvers have been utilized to generate design layouts that have minimal spatial residues, hence increasing the net-to-gross ratio.

summary In this study we compare the wayfinding behavior of occupants in virtual reality and built spaces. Results show significant differences related to the speed of navigation, geometry of movement, and frequency of stops and turns. summary In architectural design, evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithms (EMOA) have found use in numerous practical applications in which qualitative and quantitative aspects can be transformed into fitness functions to be optimized. This paper shows that they can be used in an architectural plan design process that starts from a more traditional approach. The benchmark case uses a novel construction system, called Ac.Ca. Building, with a vast architectural and technological database, arleady validated, to generate architectural plan for a residential towerbuilding with a parametric approach and EMOA. The proposed framework differs from past research because uses spatial units with high level of architectural and tecnological definition.

summary This research proposes a Spatiotemporal Modeling approach to understand the role of architecture, specifically the built environment, in the COVID-19 pandemic. The model integrates spatial and temporal parameters to calculate the probability of spread of and exposure to SARS-CoV-2 virus (responsible of COVID-19 disease) due to the combination of four aspects: Spatial configuration, organizational schedules, people’s behavior, and virus characteristics. Spatiotemporal Modeling builds upon the current models of building analytics for architecture combined with predictive models of COVID-19 spread. While most of the current research on COVID-19 spread focuses on mathematical models at regional scales and the CDC guidelines emphasizing on human behavior, our research focuses on the role of buildings in this pandemic, as the intermediate mechanism where human and social activities occur. The goal is to understand the most significant parameters that influence the virus spread within built environments, including human-to-human, fomite (surface-to-human), and airborne ways of transmission, with the purpose of providing a comprehensive parametric model that may help identify the most influential design and organizational decisions for controlling the pandemic. The proof-of-concept study is a healthcare facility.

summary We present a framework to generate intelligent spatial assemblies from sets of digitally encoded spatial parts designed by the architect with embedded principles of prefabrication, assembly awareness, and reconfigurability. The methodology includes a bespoke constraint-solving algorithm for autonomously assembling 3D geometries into larger spatial compositions for the built environment. A series of graph-based analysis methods are applied to each assembly to extract performance metrics related to architectural space-making goals, including structural stability, material density, spatial segmentation, connectivity, and spatial distribution. Together with the constraint-based assembly algorithm and analysis methods, we have integrated a novel application of deep reinforcement (RL) learning for training the models to improve at matching the multiperformance goals established by the user through self-play. RL is applied to improve the selection and sequencing of parts while considering local and global objectives. The user’s design intent is embedded through the design of partial units of 3D space with embedded fabrication principles and their relational constraints over how they connect to each other and the quantifiable goals to drive the distribution of effective features. The methodology has been developed over three years through three case study projects called ArchiGo (2017–2018), NoMAS (2018–2019), and IRSILA (2019-2020). Each demonstrates the potential for buildings with reconfigurable and adaptive life cycles.

summary As urban development enters the stock increment era , the demand of environmental quality in urban residential districts gradually improves, making the construction of livable residential environment an important direction of urban development. The improvement of livable environment is the inevitable result of this process and perceived density is an indispensable and important part. Among the statistical methods, preference study is the most commonly one to explore the subjective factors affecting preference. The experience of immersive virtual environment can provide a more appropriate analytical method better for traditional image selection. Different permeability of architectural interface has significant influences on the perception of space comfortability, crowding and fascination. In this paper, two existing enclosed residential districts are selected for case study. The factors closely related to perceived density, such as solid Wall, grille, glass, open space, greening, etc, are selected by using immersive virtual technology. Through the interviewees' evaluations of perceived density of the virtual environment, the relationship between building interface and the perceived density of the residential area will be established.

summary Given the benefits of fine mapping of large urban areas affordably, mobile environmental sensing technologies are becoming increasingly popular to complement the traditional stationary weather and air quality sensing stations. However the reliability and accuracy of low-cost mobile urban technologies is often questioned. This paper presents the design of a fast-response, autonomous and affordable Mobile Urban Sensing Technology (MUST) for the acquisition of high spatial resolution environmental data. Only when accurate neighborhood scale environmental data is affordable and accessible for architects, urban planners and policy makers, can design strategies to enhance urban health be effectively implemented. The results of an experimental air quality sensing campaign developed within Princeton University Campus is presented.

summary The dynamics of COVID-19 spread have been studied from an epidemiological perspective, at city, country, and global scales (Rabajante, 2020, Ma, 2020, and Giuliani et al., 2020), although after two years of the pandemic we know that viruses spread mostly through built environments. This study is part of the Spatiotemporal Modeling of COVID-19 spread in buildings research (Gomez, Hadi, and Kemenova et al., 2020 and 2021), which proposes a multidimensional model that integrates spatial configurations, temporal use of spaces, and virus characteristics into one multidimensional model. This paper presents a specific branch of this model that analyzes the behavioral parameters, such as vaccination, masking, and mRNA booster rates, and compares them to reducing room occupancy. We focused on human behavior, specifically human interactions within six feet. We utilized the multipurpose simulation software, AnyLogic, to quantify individual exposure to the virus, in the high school building by Perkins and Will. The results show how the most effective solution, reducing the occupancy rates or redesigning layouts, being the most impractical one, is as effective as 80% of the population getting a third boost.

summary In this paper, I present the commercial, urban-scale gunshot detection system ShotSpotter in contrast with a range of ecological sensing examples which monitor animal vocalizations. Gunshot detection sensors are used to alert law enforcement that a gunshot has occurred and to collect evidence. They are intertwined with processes of criminalization, in which the individual, rather than the collective, is targeted for punishment. Ecological sensors are used as a “passive” practice of information gathering which seeks to understand the health of a given ecosystem through monitoring population demographics, and to document the collective harms of anthropogenic change (Stowell and Sueur 2020). In both examples, the ability of sensing infrastructures to “join up and speed up” (Gabrys 2019, 1) is increasing with the use of machine learning to identify patterns and objects: a new form of expertise through which the differential agendas of these systems are implemented and made visible. I trace the differential agendas of these systems as they manifest through varied components: the spatial distribution of hardware in the existing urban environment and / or landscape; the software and other informational processes that organize and translate the data; the visualization of acoustical sensing data; the commercial factors surrounding the production of material components; and the apps, platforms, and other forms of media through which information is made available to different stakeholders. I take an interpretive and qualitative approach to the analysis of these systems as cultural artifacts (Winner 1980), to demonstrate how the political and social stakes of the technology are embedded throughout them.

In this study, we attempt to eliminate the limitations of the traditional reverse modeling method and directly turn point cloud data into the material for innovative architectural design by integrating 3D point cloud modeling into the CAD/CAM platform(Rhino/Grasshopper) most widely used by parametric designers. In this way, the randomly ordered point cloud model can be regenerated and reordered according to the designer's requirements. In addition, point cloud data can be spatially segmented and morphologically evolved according to the designer's preferences to construct a 3D model with higher efficiency and more dynamic real-time adjustment compared with the triangular mesh model. Moreover, when a computer vision technique is integrated into the point cloud design process, the point cloud model can be further used to more efficiently achieve rapid visualization, artisticization, and form adjustment. Therefore, point cloud modeling can not only be applied to the spatial structure presentation of building information modeling(BIM) but also can provide further opportunities for creative architectural design.

summary The use of StyleGAN algorithms proposes a novel approach in the investigation of architectural images. Even though graphical outcomes produced by StyleGAN algorithms are far from being architectural spaces, they might become a starting point in the creative process of architectural projects. By creating a database of specific categories of architectural images located in certain contexts, significant findings might emerge regarding their categorization in accordance to the style of a culture. This research analyzes the architectural images that result from implementing StyleGAN algorithms in a database of images of Chilean houses built between the years 2010 and 2020 and selected as finalist of the ´Project of the Year´ from international viewers and curators of the most viewed architectural website of the world. Our findings suggest that Chilean houses have two distinctive elements strongly influenced by human bias: the proportion of voids in the architectural-like generative volume and the integration of vegetation or landscape.

summary Though highly robust and economical, traditional lamella and reciprocal structural systems cannot adapt to surfaces with complex double curvature; as the timber members are standardized with no variation. Recent research has explored the use of computation for design, structural optimization, and use of robotic systems for the automated fabrication of timber joints. The disconnection between fabrication and assembly makes the construction of non-uniform double-curved reciprocal frames challenging, due to the required precise placement of discrete members with compound angle butt joints. This project investigates the use of robotic fabrication to cut and assemble a timber reciprocal frame assembly. A computational model was created to generate the double-curved reciprocal frame geometry. Within this computational framework, joint analysis, fabrication, and assembly were monitored and adjusted to meet limiting factors. An industrial robot was implemented as a bridge between the computational model and the physical construction. This paper presents a number of novel computational and robotic fabrication techniques in designing, cutting, and positioning. These techniques were explored through the robotic fabrication and assembly of a demonstrator - a double-curved reciprocal frame wall.

summary From the epidemiological perspective, previous research methods of COVID-19 are generally based on classical statistical analysis. As a result, spatial information is often not used effectively. This paper uses image-based neural networks to explore the relationship between urban spatial risk and the distribution of infected populations, and the design of urban facilities. We take the Spatio-temporal data of people infected with new coronary pneumonia before February 28 in Wuhan in 2020 as the research object. We use kriging spatial interpolation technology and core density estimation technology to establish the epidemic heat distribution on fine grid units. We further examine the distribution of nine main spatial risk factors, including agencies, hospitals, park squares, sports fields, banks, hotels, Etc., which are tested for the significant positive correlation with the heat distribution of the epidemic. The weights of the spatial risk factors are used for training Generative Adversarial Network models, which predict the heat distribution of the outbreak in a given area. According to the trained model, optimizing the relevant environment design in urban areas to control risk factors effectively prevents and manages the epidemic from dispersing. The input image of the machine learning model is a city plan converted by public infrastructures, and the output image is a map of urban spatial risk factors in the given area.

summary Three decades past since the adoption of sustainability rating systems (SRS) by the Architecture Engineering and Construction industry (AEC) as standard methods for sustainable development evaluation. Nevertheless, these methods still suffer from a low adoption and implementation rate due to their manual, labor-intensive, expert dependent, and time-demanding process. The partial success of urban development evaluation puts forth the question: Are there faster, more accurate quantitative methods for advancing sustainability evaluation? The paper describes a prototype workflow for evaluating the performance of urban landscape design in a single digital workflow, based on ecological key indicator criteria. Grasshopper and Python parametric platforms were used to translate the criteria into quantitative spatial metrics. This study demonstrates optimized biomass measurement in two urban scales in line with the SITES rating system for landscape development: (XS) site development and (XL) neighborhood scale. The measured biomass density is used as a positive indication of ecosystem services capacity in the development site. The framework's quantitative workflow contributes to additional spatial feedbacks compared to the original numeric-based rating system method. Through these, composition and configuration metrics such as ecological connectivity, edge contrast, and patch shape can be visualized, measured, and compared. The metrics, which indicate performance characteristics of the design, generate new opportunities for data-rich sustainability evaluations of urban landscapes, using a single computer-aided workflow.
