summary This paper addresses the development of parametric components based on BIM (Building Information Modeling) tools and their application for the teaching of architecture and urban designs, in a discipline focused on housing typology. As a didactic and research method, the use of industrialized building technologies in steel and precast concrete for production efficiency and low maintenance is associated with the idea of the studio as a laboratory for verification and experimentation. The system was improved for two years, and provided students with greater constructive control, basic feedback on the budget, and mastery of representation, while they investigated alternative design concepts and new components.

summary This paper emphasizes feedback from a pedagogical experiment in the context of teaching collaboration and design to multidisciplinary teams. A digital collaboration tool, a multi-touch table and collaboration software, was used as a support for discussion and decision-making for weekly project review meetings. The experiment participants' feedback on the use and usability of the digital collaboration tool highlights the potential for the use of synchronous collaboration technology and project-based learning for higher-level education. It also highlights the need for a transition towards implementation of digital tools at project review sessions.

summary From the view of concepts related to emotions and feelings treated in the field of cognitive - behavioral neuroscience and its relation with the teaching-learning processes, this paper searches to analyze educational strategies that can contribute to the field of emergency synchronous remote teaching architectural design. Methodologically, the bibliographical research of exploratory nature is related to an experience of investigation about pedagogical methods of teaching architectural design in a postgraduate course, developed, in the second semester of 2020, during the period of emergency synchronous remote teaching due to the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus.We seek to comprehend the benefits and limits of remote emergency teaching practices of architectural design, looking at factors such as emotions and feelings as important mediation tools on teaching-learning processes.

summary There is a persistent need among Hong Kong Architecture students to develop greater aptitude for critical and design thinking. The mechanics of criticality entail observation, reflection and the development of a knowledgeable response. This important process aligns with a tool-based iterative design research approach, where a cycle of action, observation, reflection, and reaction can take place. In order to complement fundamentals in architectural design, a focus on tools and tool-making approaches toward the development of a critical architectural proposal needs to be incorporated into core curriculum. Through the integration of robotics, automation and computational design approaches into the design studio environment, tool making for producing architectural media (drawings and models) can most effectively be explored. With an emphasis on design and programming tools for component fabrication and assembly, students can develop their own criterion for evaluation as a knowledge-based response to their investigations and proposed architectural systems.

summary The INTERCOM project propounds a cloud-based collaboration platform for digital planning processes in architecture. The concept is based on an openBIM approach and ensures open access for all partners involved. At its core it provides IFC-based and model-related online tools for planning, communication and collaboration. The interaction with the model and the exchange with other project partners takes place in real-time via a model-related chat and BCF exports. In addition, the integration of e-learning modules (e.g. video tutorials, wikis, project documents) encourages problem solving through further education. Especially the integration of communication and collaboration tools is supposed to enhance the decision making throughout the design process and become a key factor for a successful and coordinated BIM process. Primarily INTERCOM has been developed as a prototype for teaching BIM in interdisciplinary teams. Subsequently, the application can also be adopted for professional practice. The paper evaluates previous experiences from BIM cloud teaching and discusses the conception and development of the proposed collaborative platform.

summary As part of an ongoing research on the study of digital tools envisioning innovation in the design process, this article intends to demonstrate how analogical and digital design thinking techniques can improve and expand the range of creative methodologies in the context of an undergraduate architectural design studio. The approach presented builds on the improvement of a theoretical-didactic model during three strategies, each aiming at different steps of the design process. The first one explores analog design thinking techniques on the initial concept decisions, the following demonstrates the joint use of parametric and BIM tools as an alternative resource for generating complex forms, and the last one presents BIM technology as a pedagogical instrument for learning a constructive system. Thus, besides presenting the methods, instruments, products, and results generated, this paper will also discuss the gains and difficulties faced, appointing a new approach to undergo in the future.

summary Teaching about cities and planning involves complexities of understanding urban development in space and time, evolution and transformation of cities, urban politics, actors and stakeholders. Delivering efficient ways of teaching, is very important for educators, particularly among lecturers at universities who work with urban planning and design. Games can be used as educational tools and role-playing games can capture the political struggle of different actors and stakeholders involved in planning processes. Games can enable students to experience urban development and take roles of different actors and stakeholders in the planning and development processes and practice the art of negotiations in urban politics. Two educational games were written for the planning courses at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. Since 2011, 17 games were played in different courses. Data from the evaluation forms was collected on 14 games and 277 students answered questions. This paper analyses the evaluation forms and the comments of the students who took part in the games and discusses gaming as an educational tool. The experiences with role-playing planning games are very positive. These ratings occurs consistently in each game that was played with very small variations.

title Developing a fabrication workflow for irregular sawlogs

summary In this article, we suggest using contemporary manufacturing technologies to integrate material properties with architectural design tools, revealing new possibilities for the use of wood in architecture. Through an investigative approach, material capacities and fabrication methods are explored and combined towards establishing new workflows and architectural expressions, where material, fabrication and result are closely interlinked. The experimentation revolves around discarded, crooked oak logs, doomed to be used as firewood due to their irregularity. This project treats their diverging shapes differently by offering unique processing to each log informed by its particularities. We suggest here a way to use the natural forms and properties of sawlogs to generate new structures and spatial conditions. In this article, we discuss the scope of this approach and provide an example of a workflow for handling the discrete shapes of natural sawlogs in a system that involve the collection of material, scanning/digitisation, handling of a stockpile, computer analysis, design and robotic manufacturing. The creation of this specific method comes from a combination of investigation of wood as a material, review of existing research in the field, studies of the production lines in the current wood industry and experimentation through our in-house laboratory facilities. As such, the workflow features several solutions for handling the complex and different shapes and data of natural wood logs in a highly digitised machining and fabrication environment. This up-cycling of discarded wood supply establishes a non-standard workflow that utilises non-standard material stock and leads to a critical articulation of today’s linear material economy. The project becomes part of an ambition to reach sustainable development goals and technological innovation in global and resource-intensive architecture and building industry.

title A Teaching Methodology for Parametric Design: A Case Study with Parametric Bench

In this study, this situation was determined as a research problem. Therefore, an experimental method within the scope of the parametric design course was considered. The applied method was discussed and the result product was evaluated. The applied method not only overcame the research problem, but also helped students to develop creativity and collaborative competency.

summary This paper details an experimental project developed in an academic and pedagogical environment, aiming to bring together visual arts and computer science coursework in the creation of an interactive installation for a live event at The J. Paul Getty Museum. The result incorporates interactive visuals based on the user’s movements and facial expressions, accompanied by synthetic texts generated using machine learning algorithms trained on the museum’s art collection. Special focus is paid to how advances in computing such as Deep Learning and Natural Language Processing can contribute to deeper engagement with users and add new layers of interactivity.

title Machinic Interpolations: A GAN Pipeline for Integrating Lateral Thinking in Computational Tools of Architecture

summary In this paper, we discuss a new tool pipeline that aims to re-integrate lateral thinking strategies in computational tools of architecture. We present a 4-step AI-driven pipeline, based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), that draws from the ability to access the latent space of a machine and use this space as a digital design environment. We demonstrate examples of navigating in this space using vector arithmetic and interpolations as a method to generate a series of images that are then translated to 3D voxel structures. Through a gallery of forms, we show how this series of techniques could result in unexpected spaces and outputs beyond what could be produced by human capability alone.

summary A renewed interest in stereotomy, narrowly entwined with digital technologies, has allowed for the recovery and proposal of new techniques and expressions in this building approach. A new classification scheme for stereotomy research allows for the framing of various aspects related to this discipline, including a newly developed fabrication system specially tailored for the wedge-shaped voussoirs. This fabrication system is based in a reusable mould which may assume an infinite number of geometries, avoiding the wasteful discarding of material found in subtractive strategies. The usage of a mould also allows for more sustainable materials to be employed, catering to current challenges. The strategies subject for demonstration in this project rely on various bottom-up approaches, which involve particle physic simulations such as a hanging model to compute an optimal stereo-funicular shape, or spring mechanisms to find optimal coplanar solutions. The proposed mechanisms work in a parametric algorithmically environment, able to handle dozens of uniquely different voussoirs at the same time. Together with the automatic translation to fabrication data, the proposed shape complexity would hardly be built with classic tools. The Tamandua Vault project has the purpose of exemplifying the possibilities of an updated stereotomy, while its design demonstrates current strategies that may be employed in the resolution of complex geometrical problems and bespoke fabrication of construction components for stereotomy.

summary The irreversible imprint of humankind on Earth calls for revisiting current construction practices. This paper forwards a vision for post-Anthropocene, large-scale, architectural, and landscape construction. This vision relates to transforming natural terrains into architecture using on-site robotic tools and enabling greater sustainability through increased sensibility. Despite advancements in large-scale digital fabrication in architecture, the field still mainly focuses on the production of objects. The proposed vision aims to advance theory and practice towards territorial scale digital fabrication of environments. Three notions are proposed: material-aware construction, large-scale customization, and integrated fabrication. These aspects are demonstrated through research and teaching projects. Using scale models, they explore the deployment of robotic tools toward reforming, stabilizing, and reconstituting soil in an architectural context. Together, they propose a theoretical ground for in situ digital fabrication for a new era, relinking architecture to the terrains upon which it is formed.

summary This paper addresses ergonomic drawbacks in NASA’s modular Multi-Mission Space Exploration Vehicle’s (MMSEV) latest prototype, 2B’s nosecone, to propose new iteration based on considerations such as mass minimization, visibility maximization, and structural integrity. With 2B as a benchmark, and using computational tools typically used in the AEC industry to carry out FEA analysis, comparisons are made with potential design changes. The numerical and visual data such as weight, and stress distribution, provided by the benchmark analysis, served as metrics for comparison and redesign. In turn, this design development exercise attempts to bring together the different design approaches to design, held by human- factors designers and structural engineers.

summary School buildings are currently one of the largest portions of planning and building projects in Germany. In order to reflect the continuous developments in school building construction with constantly changing spatial requirements, an approach to analyse, derive and combine patterns of schools is proposed to adapt school typologies accordingly. Therefore, the topology is analysed, concerning interconnection methods, such as adjacency, accessibility, depth, and flow. The geometric analysis of e.g. room sizes or spatial proportions is enhanced by including grouping of rooms, estimated room clusters, or room shapes. Furthermore, text-matching is used to determine e.g. room program fulfilment, or assigning functional room descriptions to predefined room types, revealing huge differences of terms throughout time and architects. First results of the analyses show a relevant correlation between spatial proportion and room types.

summary To achieve Sustainable Development Goals, in addition to the switch to sustainable energy sources and energy-efficient buildings, transport offers a major lever for reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gases. The increasing demand for emission-free mobility (e.g. through electromobility) but also heat pumps has a direct impact on the electricity consumption of buildings and settlements. It is still difficult to simulate the effects and interactions of different measures as sector coupling concepts require comprehensible tools for ex ante evaluation of planning measures at the community level and the linking of domain-specific models (energy, transport). Using the municipality of Bruck an der Leitha (Austria) as an example, a digital twin based on an open data model (Bednar et al., 2020) is created for the development of methods, which can be used to simulate measures to improve the settlement structure within the municipality. Forecast models for mobility (Schmaus, 2019; Ritz, 2019) and the building stock are developed or applied and linked via the open data model to be able to run through development scenarios and variants. The forecasting and visualisation options created in the project form the basis for the ex-ante evaluation of measures and policies on the way to a Positive-Energy-District. By identifying and collecting missing data, data gaps are filled for the simulation of precise models in the specific study area. A digital, interactive 3D model is created to examine the forecast results and the different scenarios.

summary This paper presents an ethnographic pilot study into the design and application of digital design tools in a leading Shanghai-based architecture and engineering firm. From a participant observer's point of view, we employ qualitative research methods to enquire the conditions and experiences entailed in day-to-day collaborative activities in conjunction with the custom-development of digital design tools in advanced practice. The described initial ethnographic enquiry lasted for six weeks. While previous studies tended to favour post-rationalised and outcome-focused reports into toolmaking for design, we observe through participant observation that daily collaboration in practice is multi-faceted and overwhelmingly more complex. This paper further portrays and reflects on the concomitant opportunities and challenges of participant observation as a research method that can bridge academia and practice. We argue that, in order to appreciate and to inform digital design toolmaking practices, it is essential to recognise the richness of practice, in and of itself.

summary The separation between architectural design teaching and structural education corroborates the division of labor in professional practice that cannot support the development of dialectical relations between architects and engineers. Thus, the proposal of hybridization between architectural design teaching and structural education developed in this article presupposes a shift from the centrality given to the plastic and spatial principles of the architectural form to the development of approaches that are oriented towards the recognition of the material and constructive questions which aided by the parametric and structural behavior simulation tools allow the development of complex relationships based on tectonic procedural logic.

summary This article describes an analysis of the morphological changes between 2005 and 2020 in the Vila Cabral neighborhood, located on the outskirts of the Brazilian city of Campina Grande. The research was developed in two different analytical scenarios, adopting the algorithmic- parametric computational implementation as a methodology, and applying the following procedures: (i) formal decomposition of a sample of the urban fabric; (ii) visibility graph analysis (VGA); (iii) analysis of the diversity of uses and (iv) analysis of urban density (populational and built). The study demonstrated that the association of different urban analysis tools strengthens decision-making in the context of evidence-based urban design.

summary Throughout COVID 19 Pandemic since 2020, it was necessary to generate instructional strategies including digital platforms for creative processes in architecture. This article exposes an experience that integrates pedagogical, operational, and technical dimensions in architecture virtual teaching. A pedagogical methodology was designed and implemented, fusing User Experience (UX) and Extended Reality (XR) during the architectural design process in a virtual experimental studio. The use of UX-XR as a designing-reviewing strategy in architecture, positively impacted the creative experience of both students and reviewers by enriching the perception of the space and interactively simulating the user experience. A friendly, fun, and socially inclusive environment was generated for learning architecture using synthetic media and Multiuser Virtual Environments (MUVEs). The successful results of the students’ projects by phase are shown, revealing the significance of combining UX and XR, incorporating the metaverse as a canvas to review, recreate, interact, and assess architectural designs.
