summary Contemporary agent-based pedestrian simulations offer great potential to evaluate architectural and urban design proposals in terms of medical risks, crowd safety, and visitor comfort. Nevertheless, due to their relative computational heaviness and complicated input-parameters, pedestrian simulations are not employed during the design process commonly. Simulation results significantly impact planning decisions, especially when they are already available in the early design phases. This paper analyzes the requirements of pedestrian simulations for early planning stages, such as seamless integration into iterative and collaborative design processes, interactivity, and appropriate visualization of results. For this purpose, we combine two existing projects: a high-accuracy pedestrian simulation and the CDP//Collaborative Design Platform. To adapt the simulation method to the requirements of early planning stages, we investigate interactions that blend intuitively with the design process and enable multiple users to interact simultaneously. We simplify simulations input parameters to match the level of detail of the early design phases. The simulation model is adapted to facilitate continuous and spontaneous interactions. Furthermore, we develop visualization techniques to support initial design negotiations and present strategies for compensating computation time and giving constant feedback to a dynamic design process.

summary In the search for proposals and solutions related to the design of architectural envelopes, such as vertical gardens, there is data that shows that these strategies favor the improvement of the thermal capacity of these architectural skins (Oberndorfer et al., 2007). By means of passive strategies, this research aims to applied innovation in the development of a prototype of a bio-receptive surface that generates the favorable conditions for the proliferation development of vegetative agents, using concrete as a supporting base and modifying their pH levels with the objective of generating a balance for the proliferation of bryophytes. Through iterative experimental processes, a relationship between shape, surface and material composition is sought to generate a surface that produces bio-receptivity conditions.

summary Microalgae are a sustainable source of unique properties with potential for various applications. Biofuel production has led to the use of them as bioreactors on an architectural scale. Most of these efforts cannot manage the output due to the lack of intelligent control and monitoring over environmental micro-scale growth. This research presents the possibility of control and monitoring over the bio-energy retrieved through micro-organisms in bio-reactors, specifically the growth environments computation. To achieve monitoring, three dimensions of the medium culture captured by cameras, and with the advantage of image processing, the picture frames pixel values measured. In this process, we use the Python OpenCV Library as an image processing reference. Finally, a specifically developed algorithm analyses the calculated 3d-matrix. By changing the environmental parameters, control happens by directly recognizing changes in density and outputs. This researchs computational process has proposed a novel approach for controlling particle-based environments to reach the desired functions of microorganisms, This approach can use in a wide range of cases as a method.

summary With the increase in labor costs, more and more robot constructions appear in building construction and spatial structure fabrication. There are many robots working on large-scale objects. When the reach range of the robot cannot meet the requirements, so an external axis is needed. The external axis is usually a linear motion device, which can significantly increase the operating range of the robotic arm. In actual construction, it is also widely used. This article introduces a 3d printing coffee bar project. Because this project is of a large scale and needs to be printed at one time, the XYZ external axis was used in this project to complete the task. Inspired by this project, this article study several methods of optimizing the motion of external axes in large-scale construction. Finally, we chose to use the Fourier series as the most suitable method to optimize the printing path and programed this method as a component of FUROBOT for more convenient use. This article explains the principle of this method in detail. Finally, this article uses a 3D printing example to illustrate the precautions in actual use.

summary Nowadays, climate problems, such as urban ventilation, heat island effect are becoming increasingly serious. Performance-oriented buildings that respond positively to the environment are constructing a sustainable future of the living environment. This research introduces an autonomous Self-Formation Wind Tunnel (SFWT) platform based on 120 dynamic grid mechanical devices, and its building cluster morphology generation workflow in the conceptual design stage, for the rapid and mass formation experiments. The Self-formation wind tunnel plat-form, which has the advantages of both perceptive and real-time data, is able to use the techniques of machine learning to provide a new design paradigm, from environmental performance to physical morphology.

summary The use of StyleGAN algorithms proposes a novel approach in the investigation of architectural images. Even though graphical outcomes produced by StyleGAN algorithms are far from being architectural spaces, they might become a starting point in the creative process of architectural projects. By creating a database of specific categories of architectural images located in certain contexts, significant findings might emerge regarding their categorization in accordance to the style of a culture. This research analyzes the architectural images that result from implementing StyleGAN algorithms in a database of images of Chilean houses built between the years 2010 and 2020 and selected as finalist of the ´Project of the Year´ from international viewers and curators of the most viewed architectural website of the world. Our findings suggest that Chilean houses have two distinctive elements strongly influenced by human bias: the proportion of voids in the architectural-like generative volume and the integration of vegetation or landscape.

summary The paper is a theoretical review on the nature of tectonic expressions in the context of digital design and construction. By investigating the origin of digital tectonics as a methodological exploration to dissolve the oppositional relationship between the digital and the tectonic, the paper identifies the lack of focus on the essential task of tectonic expression-constructing embodied experience on the building form. Therefore, the paper firstly reviews how tectonic expression is understood in its traditional sense, particularly within its indispensable relationship to human body in order to construct the empathic perception of structural dynamics. Then, the paper reveals the disassociation between human body and tectonic form in the posthumanist mode of design-to-construction of the digital age. Further, by articulating the dynamic nature of embodiment in the posthumanist scenario where the body is constantly reconstructed by the technocultural conext of the living environment, the paper proposes a theoretical model arguing for a reinterpretation of both the nature and the task of digital tectonics in order to reclaim the embodied experience in the digital age. Digital tectonics becomes an existential project that must be designed within its mutual determining relationship with the historical-cultural construction of the body-self.

summary From parametric shape finding to digital shape generation, the discussion of generative design has never stopped in recent years. As an important watershed of building intelligence, generative design method has dual significance of scheme selection and building performance optimization in digital architectural design workflow. In this paper, the generative design method for the layout of residential buildings is studied. The pix2pix network, a kind of generative adversarial network, is used to learn the layout method of residential buildings in Shanghai. The generated layout uses Octopus, a genetic algorithm tool of Grasshopper, to generate the volume and optimize the sunshine hours and other performance parameters. In the generation process, different training sample sets and Pareto genetic algorithm optimization are used to realize the control of building density, plot ratio and height limit. This method can meet the real application scenarios in the early stage of architectural design to a certain extent, and has more expansibility, providing ideas for the generative design method of building group.

summary In recent years, additive manufacturing and 3D printing technologies have been increasingly used in the field of construction engineering. 3D Concrete printing is a kind of laminated printing method using concrete extrusion technique. Concrete has the advantages of high compressive strength, low deformation, and excellent durability, and has high application value in the construction field. However, as a brittle material, concrete has limited tensile and flexural strength. For beam like components, it is difficult to fully exert the compressive performance of the material relying solely on itself, so it is difficult to apply to the bending member. The experimental case introduced in this paper combined the prestressing system with concrete printing technology. A post-tensioning prestressing system suitable for prefabricated concrete 3D printing components, which combined the excellent tensile properties of steel bars with the compressive performance of the 3D concrete printed part was proposed.

summary This article presents a didactic experience carried out with the use of a BIM tool in the Thermal Environmental Comfort discipline of the graduate course in Architecture and Urbanism of a private Higher Education Institution in the city of Salvador-Bahia. Starting in 2020, students began designing solar protection devices using a geometric model in Revit. The method described in Annex I of the Technical Regulation on the Quality of Energy Efficiency Level in Residential Buildings (RTQ-R) was applied. The results obtained showed a better understanding by the students about the importance of correctly sizing solar protection devices for different orientations.

summary Lack of affordable housing is a worldwide problem. Rapid urbanization, rural exodus, and poor governance policies have contributed to the problem and, in response, low-income populations resort to self-construction. The result are informal settlements located predominantly in marginalized urban areas (United Nations, 2015) that develop with neither urban infrastructure nor compliance with building and planning codes (Lall et al., 2006; Patel et al., 2018; United Nations Human Settlements Programme, 2012) and, consequently, offer a poor-quality built environment. The goal of this paper is to methodologically identify physical aspects of such built environments that could be improved. We evaluate a case study, the Santa Marta favela in Brazil, using a holistic housing-quality assessment tool and local building and planning codes as reference. Our results identify the physical characteristics with lower quality standards in the case study and demonstrate the efficacy of the methodology introduced for this purpose.

summary The purpose of this experience consisted of linking two methodologies usually used exclusively in the study of the design operation in the university academic environment: working with cardboard models and augmented reality. The methodology used consisted of work in groups based on skills to build cardboard models, to model in 3D, and to work with augmented reality. They developed interior space designs through the interaction of physical models (made of cardboard) and observed models on those physical models through systems equipped with applications to view augmented reality. Among the main results of this experience are the possibility of interacting with dynamic objects modeled in 3D in the physical field of the cardboard model, and the successful integration of two work methodologies (analog and digital), at least in one of the stages of the design operation.

The proposal found its starting point in the registration of a current situation in which the architectural project is crossed by issues alien to a discipline whose principles are deeply speculative. Retrograde problems product of a conservative historical revival and emerging positions of political correctness trends distorting disciplinary purposes in proposals that have consolidated a desolate, unimaginative and banal disciplinary panorama. The KPY 1139 workshop proposed to return to the sources of a joyfully projective discipline, investigating the bases of the most eloquent projective narrative: science fiction cinema.

summary The paper aims to analyse the parameters for dimensioning the urban block in the context of the ongoing debate over Rio de Janeiro's new Master Plan (PLC N°44/2021). The analysis focuses on three main points: (1) the definition of the block, (2) the discrepancies found in this regard in the land parcelling system, and (3) the limitations that gated communities impose on the parameterisation of the block. The paper briefly relates the role of the master plan in Brazilian urban policy. Next, it points out the arguments that emerged during the public hearings over the new proposed master plan regarding block sizing. Then, it analyses Rio's urban law framework and the literature regarding the city's road network, cul-de-sac structures and gated communities, supported by the blocks and the streets georeferenced maps available at the Rio's Municipality and the Open Street Maps platform. Finally, it discusses the analysis outcomes with the arguments that emerged during the public hearings regarding block sizing.

title From the Vertical to the Horizontal: 3D Printing Without the Requirement of Formwork

summary The objective of this article is to develop a methodology to print self-supporting, synclastic and anticlastic double curved surfaces tending to the horizontal from the vertical without requiring formwork. To achieve this goal the following was studied, fist place, the definition, the stresses and behaviors of double curved surfaces. Second place, he performance and applications of 3D printing in the construction area, in three companies of this field. From the bibliographic review, the variables are identified to propose an algorithm to print synclastic and anticlastic surfaces in 3d. Finally, the feasibility of the method to print these types of surfaces in 3d was proven by printing four prototypes which confirmed the proper operation of the algorithm, along with showing aspects to improve at the time of printing.

summary The Covid-19 health crisis has turned spontaneous “informal street markets” into dangerous hotspots for the spread of Covid-19 due to the formation of crowds of people. These informal markets are due to a lack of state planning and regulation, a reality that exists throughout Latin America. This research aims to analyse these spaces through a methodology for computational validation that uses an agent-based model (ABM) for the abstraction and simulation of the displacement of people (moving agents) and their behaviour in the spatial configuration of the area (static agents), identifying an aggregated score in each simulation with the purpose of designing urban interventions that reduce the probability of forming crowds. The paper presents the proposed methodology and the ABM with a preliminary validation by simulating two spatial configurations with two hypothetical scenarios (analyses with 10 and 50 agents) and comparing their aggregated scores, showing a correlation between spatial configuration with the formation of crowds.

summary This communication informs about the development of a low-cost clay extrusion mechanism, adapted to a 3d printer, which will be used to support the study and practice of architecture in the context of a research laboratory. We believe that this research is a contribution to the 3D printing community and architectural academic environment. We understand that this project makes a valuable contribution to the academic environment by promoting the production of knowledge in the “do it yourself” way by allowing the acquisition of “know how” in a procedural way. There is an effort in making our extruder mechanism replicable by whoever is interested in understanding how the system works.

summary In the next 25 years, the elderly population will increase on average to 65 thousand people annually in Chile (INE, 2018). Their independent living is jeopardized partially for diminished visual capacity that difficult spatial perception. Although light does not correct vision impairment, adequate light levels can respond to the needs of older people as preventing visual errors. This study evaluates daylighting availability in an assisting living residence in a southern city in Chile. A quantitative approach resulted in the identification of envelope-retrofit strategies that allow achieving recommended levels of natural lighting, particularly in shared spaces where residents spend most of the day. The results show that it would be possible to achieve better light availability, as it also allows for a better understanding of the contributions of the building envelope. Finally, the study outlines recommendations for future retrofits that meet requirements for visual comfort for a growing senior population.

summary In a country with continental dimensions like Brazil, air transport plays a strategic role in the development of the country. In recent years, initiatives have been promoted to boost the development of air transport, among which the BIM BR strategy stands out, instituted by decree n-9.983 (2019), decree n-10.306 (2020) and more recently, the publication of the airport design manual (SAC, 2021). In this context, this work presents partial results of a doctoral research based on the Design Science Research (DSR) method for the application of Machine Learning (ML) techniques in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) subarea, aiming to support SAC airport project analysts in the phase of project evaluation. Based on a set of training and test data corresponding to airport projects, two ML algorithms were trained. Preliminary results indicate that the use of ML algorithms enables a new scenario to be explored by teams of airport design analysts in Brazil.

title Digital Disobedience and Other Futures: Figurations of Futuristic Home Devices

summary The article presents and discusses the experience of a workshop held online in 2020 as part of the DigitalFUTURES event. The proposal found its starting point in the register of a world in the midst of a pandemic crisis. The general objective of the workshop was the construction of a design thinking capable of acting on the domestic by means of a disobedience projected towards a possible future. In this framework, digital disobedience became an exercise in critically questioning certain ambiguities of digital interfaces in their everyday omnipresence. By adopting a decolonial sight on design through an epistemology from the South, it was possible to achieve at alternative figurations of futures. These figurations led to the design of a series of futuristic domestic devices capable of exploring disobedient scenarios of domestic dwelling.
