summary The article proposes to explore the concepts of storytelling (Lupton, 2020 and Xavier, 2015) and ubiquity (Santaella, 2013 and Santos, 2021) applied to the design of natural and invisible interfaces (Benyon, 2011). With Natural Interface it is possible to interact with devices directly, without needing the help of a mouse or keyboard. To do so, it presents as a case study the project “Criatura de Luz” (2015), by Estúdio Guto Requena, carried out to compose the new facade of the WZ Hotel (Sao Paulo). The purpose of this research is to understand the role of the designer in the creation of interfaces that are not only interactive, but that begin to propose immersive and ubiquitous narratives in design projects and the method for this analysis will be the case study from the design perspective as storytelling proposed by Lupton (2020). The aim is to do exploratory research to provide greater familiarity with the problem.

title Human Behavior Simulations to Determine Best Strategies for Reducing COVID-19 Risk in Schools

summary The dynamics of COVID-19 spread have been studied from an epidemiological perspective, at city, country, and global scales (Rabajante, 2020, Ma, 2020, and Giuliani et al., 2020), although after two years of the pandemic we know that viruses spread mostly through built environments. This study is part of the Spatiotemporal Modeling of COVID-19 spread in buildings research (Gomez, Hadi, and Kemenova et al., 2020 and 2021), which proposes a multidimensional model that integrates spatial configurations, temporal use of spaces, and virus characteristics into one multidimensional model. This paper presents a specific branch of this model that analyzes the behavioral parameters, such as vaccination, masking, and mRNA booster rates, and compares them to reducing room occupancy. We focused on human behavior, specifically human interactions within six feet. We utilized the multipurpose simulation software, AnyLogic, to quantify individual exposure to the virus, in the high school building by Perkins and Will. The results show how the most effective solution, reducing the occupancy rates or redesigning layouts, being the most impractical one, is as effective as 80% of the population getting a third boost.

title Programming complex 3D meshes. A generative approach based on shape grammars.

summary This article summarizes the results of art based research developed thanks to a grant by the PUCP University of Lima in 2021-2022. An open source generative solution will be described, based on generative grammars, to create very complex and programmable 3D meshes. Analyzing hundreds of models generated with these algorithms, a solution was found based on the idea of “intelligent meshes”, which change their behavior during the modeling process. This is done using tags, or vertices identifiers, that, like genes, describe the topological characteristics of each vertex and its generative development during the process. Tags can be programmed interactively editing its data with tools provided by the interface or using generative grammars that allow an incredible variety of complex forms and stimulate the user creativity. The research findings also elucidate some important conceptual issues, like the importance of original technology development to defend cultural identity.

summary There are severe environmental and ecological issues once we evaluate the architecture industry with LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), such as emission of CO2 caused by necessary high temperature for producing cement and significant amounts of Construction Demolition Waste (CDW) in deteriorated and obsolete buildings. One of the ways to solve these problems is Bio-Material. CELLULOSE and CHITON is the 1st and 2nd abundant substance in nature (Duro-Royo, J.: Aguahoja_ProgrammableWater-based Biocomposites for Digital Design and Fabrication across Scales. MIT, pp. 1–3 (2019)), which means significantly potential for architectural dimension production. Meanwhile, renewability and biodegradability make it more conducive to the current problem of construction pollution. The purpose of this study is to explore Cellulose Based Biomaterial and bring it into architectural scale additive manufacture that engages with performance in the material development, with respect to time of solidification and control of shrinkage, as well as offering mechanical strength. At present, the experiments have proved the possibility of developing a cellulose-chitosan- based composite into 3D-Printing Construction Material (Sanandiya, N.D., Vijay, Y., Dimopoulou, M., Dritsas, S., Fernandez, J.G.: Large-scale additive manufacturing with bioinspired cellulosic materials. Sci. Rep. 8(1), 1–5 (2018)). Moreover, The research shows that the characteristics (Such as waterproof, bending, compression, tensile, transparency) of the composite can be enhanced by different additives (such as xanthan gum, paper fiber, flour), which means it can be customized into various architectural components based on Performance Directional Optimization. This solution has a positive effect on environmental impact reduction and is of great significance in putting the architectural construction industry into a more environment-friendly and smart state.

summary Several research projects (Gramazio et al. 2014; Willmann et al. 2015; Helm et al. 2017; Adel et al. 2018; Adel Ahmadian 2020) have investigated the use of automated assembly technologies (e.g., industrial robotic arms) for the fabrication of nonstandard timber structures. Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

summary This research aims to explore the quantitative relationship between urban planning decisions and the health status of residents. By modeling the Point of Interest (POI) data and the geographic distribution of health-related outcomes, the research explores the critical factors in urban planning that could influence the health status of residents. It also informs decision-making regarding a healthier built environment and opens up possibilities for other data-driven methods. The data source constitutes two data sets, the POI data from OpenStreetMap, and the PLACES: Local Data for Better Health dataset from CDC. After the data is collected and joined spatially, a machine learning method is used to select the most critical urban features in predicting the health outcomes of residents. Several machine learning models are trained and compared. With the chosen model, the prediction is evaluated on the test dataset and mapped geographically. The relations between factors are explored and interpreted. Finally, to understand the implications for urban design, the impact of modified POI data on the prediction of residents' health status is calculated and compared. This research proves the possibility of predicting resident's health from urban conditions with machine learning methods. The result verifies existing healthy urban design theories from a different perspective. This approach shows vast potential that data could in future assist decision-making to achieve a healthier built environment.

summary We present a framework for data-driven algorithmic generation and post-evaluation of alternative urban developments. These urban developments are framed by a strategic placement of diverse urban typologies whose spatial configurations follow design recommendations outlined in existing building and zoning regulations. By using specific rule-based generative algorithms, different spatial arrangements of these urban typologies, forming building blocks, are derived and visualized, given the aforementioned spatial, legal, and functional regulations. Once the envisioned urban configurations are generated, these are evaluated based on a number of aspects pertaining to spatial, economic, and thermal (environmental) dimensions, which are understood as the key performance indicators (KPIs) selected for informed ranking and evaluation. To facilitate the analysis and data-driven ranking of derived numeric KPIs, we deployed a diverse set of analytical techniques (e.g., conditional selection, regression models) enriched with visual interactive mechanisms, otherwise known as the Visual Analytics (VA) approach. The proposed approach has been tested on a case study district in the city of Vienna, Austria, offering real-world design solutions and assessments.

summary When programming robotic assembly processes, it is often necessary to create a sequential list of actions. Some actions are robotic motions (requiring motion trajectory), and some are for controlling external equipment, such as grippers and fastening tools. The act of planning these actions and motion trajectories is called Task Planning and Motion Planning. Existing literature in robotics explored many different planning algorithms for planning a single trajectory to planning a complete sequence of tasks where continuity is maintained [Garrett et al, 2021]. Many application literature focused on the TAMP for service robots, medical robots, and self-driving cars, while there are few examples for architectural applications. For digital fabrication and automated construction, the planning method has to be adapted to the needs of architectural assemblies and the scale of construction [Leung et al, 2021]. Some of the unique challenges are the highly bespoke workpiece and assembly geometry, the large workpiece (e.g., long beams), and a dense collision environment. This three-day hybrid workshop addressed the needs of the architectural robotics community to use industrial robotic arms to assemble highly bespoke objects. The objects do not have any repetitive parts or assembly targets. The workshop leaders shared their experiences using industrial robots to construct large-scale timber structures. One of the most useful techniques is the recently published “Flowchart Planning Method,” where task sequence is planned using a flowchart, and motion trajectories are planned in a second pass [Huang et al, 2021].

summary MindSculpt enables users to generate a wide range of hybrid geometries in Grasshopper in real-time simply by thinking about those geometries. This design tool combines a non-invasive brain–computer interface (BCI) with the parametric design platform Grasshopper, creating an intuitive design workflow that shortens the latency between ideation and implementation compared to traditional computer-aided design tools based on mouse-and-keyboard paradigms. The project arises from transdisciplinary research between neuroscience and architecture, with the goal of building a cyber-human collaborative tool that is capable of leveraging the complex and fluid nature of thinking in the design process. MindSculpt applies a supervised machine-learning approach, based on the support vector machine model (SVM), to identify patterns of brain-waves that occur in EEG data when participants mentally rotate four different solid geometries. The researchers tested MindSculpt with participants who had no prior experience in design, and found that the tool was enjoyable to use and could contribute to design ideation and artistic endeavors.

summary Today, the living environment is much more complex due to rapid urbanization and cities hardly can bear increasing crowds. This evolving environment together with the change in living habits, put a strain on the shoulders of architects and engineers to find faster and more effective solutions towards flexible and responsive design in future city scenarios. Modular design is one of the most suitable solutions since it is based on interchangeable components that facilitate different combinations and activities responding to emerging needs and demands without demolishing a whole edifice. There are many available algorithms defining rules for the automated generation of modular building units but mainly designed for top-down solutions. This paper proposes an evolutionary approach aiming to find topological relations among the units based on a specific architectural program concerning environmental performance. Environmental conditions define the rules for the growth of units on site. The algorithm produces an automatic layout through a set of positioning rules for units organized around a core depending on a branching system. In this sense, this paper contributes to showing how rule-based modular growth on-site is shaped with environmental and architectural concerns for future city scenarios.

summary “Unfolding” is a pavilion comprised of six lightweight structures designed for the London Design Biennale 2021. “UnFolding” examines the potential for using engineered timber with digital tools to produce flexible interiors. The pavilion is folded through kerfing methods into fractal-based structures. Extensive research, testing and sample fabrication to acquire optimal flexibility of different timber members through kerf patterns was accomplished for the project.

summary At the beginning of the twenty-first century, a discipline at the intersection of digital art and science explores how natural and artificial species are affected, coexist, and feed back to humans based on multi-scalar hybrid models. They embody types of surveillance entities or non-human custodians, and serve as inspiration for another generation of designs produced ten years later, the case studies that are presented here. This paper explains the design and parametric fundamentals of a digital architecture installation at the University of Alicante (Spain 2021) using CNC models and the TouchDesigner programming environment. The installation contains a clan of technological-virtual hybrid species, non-human custodians, which: (a) strengthen the Proposal’s discourse on the recognition of legal identity of the Mar Menor lagoon (Southeast Spain); (b) incorporate reactive designs; (c) help raise awareness of the effect of human actions on the lagoon’s ecology and nearby streams. The viewpoint is not anthropocentric, because it adopts the perspective of the foraging fish species or the oxygen-seeking algae species, among others, in order to reveal the deterioration processes. In most cases, the result is a sort of synaesthetic conversation that interweaves light, sound, movement and data.

summary Point cloud processing has come a long way in the past years. Advances in computer vision (CV) and machine learning (ML) have enabled its automated recognition and processing. However, few of those developments have made it through to the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. Here, optimizing those workflows can reduce time spent on early-phase projects, which otherwise could be spent on developing innovative design solutions. Simplifying the processing of building point cloud scans makes it more accessible and therefore, usable for design, planning and decision-making. Furthermore, automated processing can also ensure that point clouds are processed consistently and accurately, reducing the potential for human error. This work is part of a larger effort to optimize early-phase design processes to promote the reuse of vacant buildings. It focuses on technical solutions to automate the reconstruction of point clouds into a digital twin as a simplified solid 3D element model. In this paper, various ML approaches, among others KPConv Thomas et al. (2019), ShapeConv Cao et al. (2021) and Mask-RCNN He et al. (2017), are compared in their ability to apply semantic as well as instance segmentation to point clouds. Further it relies on the S3DIS Armeni et al. (2017), NYU v2 Silberman et al. (2012) and Matterport Ramakrishnan et al. (2021) data sets for training. Here, the authors aim to establish a workflow that reduces the effort for users to process their point clouds and obtain object-based models. The findings of this research show that although pure point cloud-based ML models enable a greater degree of flexibility, they incur a high computational cost. We found, that using RGB-D images for classifications and segmentation simplifies the complexity of the ML model but leads to additional requirements for the data set. These can be mitigated in the initial process of capturing the building or by extracting the depth data from the point cloud.

summary This study explores the integration of biomimicry into design processes by providing a closer look at architectural practice and research and proposes a categorization of bio-inspired paradigms. Noticeable clusters within biomimetic approaches in architecture that share common principles are investigated throughout the research via a series of built examples that are considered to have biological phenomena as inspiration sources. Bio-inspired design processes are investigated via a categorization to detect the depth of analogical transfer and multiplicity. The paper sets out to present the issues concerning the analogical distance, multiplicity of approaches, and the decrease in the gap between nature and human-made phenomena.

title A Data-Driven Participatory Decision Model Proposal in the Context of Urban Vibrancy

summary This paper focuses on the vibrancy of urban environments in the context of liveability. The objective is to explore the interrelationships of activity determinants what attracts visitors to support vibrancy decisions. The research questions how to uncover the relationships among vibrancy parameters and how to utilize the relation network for decision support. We utilize Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) for relational analysis and support with expert participation for an efficient decision-making. In this way, we expect to develop a causal by calibrating the data-driven BBN network. The results show that the user density has direct relationship with public open space, place rate, activity diversity, landmarks’ visitation rate cultural attributes, and accessibility; indirect relationship with time diversity, activity diversity and density. The results support the arguments on the importance of activity diversity in space and time, and intense urban pattern within the attractiveness public spaces for urbanity.

The initial prototypes of the designed 3D printer have been tested with a specific focus on rotational movement mechanism and developing G-code solutions. The results of the low fidelity prototyping process are discussed in the context of stability of the system, usability of the proposed tool, sufficiency of step motor torque, distance between nozzle and the printing surface, producibility with reasonable budget, and flexibility. The distinctive feature of this study, unlike robot-aided additive manufacturing applications, is that it can be achieved with a low budget. The study is expected to be useful for designers who are interested in designing bespoke additive manufacturing solutions for double-curved and spherical geometries.

summary Due to climate change and the problematic amount of waste and CO2 emissions in the construction industry, non-human organisms and sustainable solutions are key motivators of the study. This paper focuses on developing a bioreceptive (Guillitte, 1995) composite suitable for additive manufacturing, composed to support growth of various organisms. It investigates key properties which have shown to be beneficial for promoting biological growth, such as water absorption, water permeability, humidity, and surface texture. The study evaluates the effect of two groups of clay-based waste additives, wooden sawdust (Arslan, et al., 2021) and sediment material sourced from local tunnel excavation in Prague. Simultaneously the need for intelligent reintegration and waste use is prevalent. Additive fabrication offers the ability to test a variety of composites and (re-)integrate them into the manufacturing processes. Current approach explores how to design artificial environments/skins for greenery and small life with the potential to improve both diversity and survivability while maintaining a better climate in its immediate surroundings. Bioreceptive design has the potential to improve the quality of the urban environment and bring new aesthetic influences into it (Cruz and Beckett 2016, p. 51-64).

summary With the increasing population growth of human beings, the world is being threatened by the water scarcity problem, causing insecurity in water accessibility. Therefore, a deliberated water management gains fatal importance. In addition, the awareness of the issue through education, specifically in the early ages, plays a crucial role in this path. This research considers the water issue of Istanbul in its content. However, regarding the target audience, which is the kids, it uses a novel approach to tackle the problem. The paper proposes a visually enriched and nonlinear, serious game for the children to teach them about the importance of water and its impact on the planet, specific to Istanbul. The game is inspired by National Geographic Turkey's documentary named 25 Liters: In Pursuit of Water, asking the players to survive in a drought situation in the future. It aims to change the kid's lifestyle to revive the country's in-danger future.

summary This paper investigates the role technology and neuroscience play in aiding the design process and making meaningful connections between people and nature. Using two workshops as a vehicle, the team introduced advanced technologies and Quantified Self practices that allowed people to use neural data and pattern recognition as feedback for the design process. The objective is to find clues to natural elements of human perception that can inform the design to meet goals for well-being. A pattern network of geometric shapes that achieve a higher level of monitored meditation levels and point toward a positive emotional valence is proposed. By referencing biological forms found in nature, the workshops utilized an algorithmic process that explored how nature can influence architecture. To measure the impact, the team used FaceOSC for capture and an Artificial Neural Network for micro-expression recognition, and a MindWave sensor manufactured by NeuroSky, which documented the human response further. The methodology allowed us to establish a boundary logic, ranking geometric shapes that suggested positive emotions and a higher level of monitored meditation levels. The results pointed us to a deeper level of understanding relative to geometric shapes in design. They indicate a new way to predict how well-being factors can clarify and rationalize a more intuitive design process inspired by nature.

summary Close-range photogrammetry, due to the possibilities offered by the technological evolution of acquisition tools and, above all, the relative original challenges posed to surveyors and the theory of measurements, deserve constant critical attention. The new opportunities to detect and represent reality are mostly focused on historical architecture, referring to consequent orders of magnitude and restitution scales. On the other hand, the formalization of relevant practices for very small objects is not frequently addressed. In recent tests carried out using two Dino-Lite handheld digital microscope models, polarized light digital microscopes generally used in medical and industrial fields, we proved the potential of using these imaging systems also for Cultural Heritage documentation, highlighting, however, some issues related to the depth of field and the consequent acquisition geometry. Therefore, this study aims to solve these problems, increasing the performance of microscopic photogrammetry by optimizing the acquisition procedures with the design of custom accessories for micro-photogrammetry (e.g. a calibrated plate). These developments will be carried out as part of a technology transfer agreement with the Dino-Lite company pointed to codify a protocol for high accuracy photogrammetric documentation of small artefacts.
