summary This research presents a machine learning-based interactive design method for the creation of customized inserts that improve the fit of the PPE 3M 1863 and 3M 8833 respiratory face masks. These two models are the most commonly used by doctors and professionals during the recent covid19 pandemic. The proper fit of the mask is crucial for their performance. Characteristics and fit of current leading market brands were analyzed to develop a parametric design software workflow that results in a 3D printed insert customized to specific facial features and the mask that will be used. The insert provides a perfect fit for the respirator mask. Statistical face meshes were generated from an anthropometric database, and 3D facial scans and photos were taken from 200 doctors and nurses on an NHS trust hospital. The software workflow can start from either a 2D image of the face (picture) or a 3D mesh taken from a scanning device. The platform uses machine learning and a parametric design workflow based on key performance facial parameters to output the insert between the face and the 3M masks. It also generates the 3d printing file, which can be processed onsite at the hospital. The 2D image approach and the 3D scan approach initializing the system were digitally compared, and the resultant inserts were physically tested by 20 frontline personnel in an NHS trust hospital. Finally, we demonstrate the criticality of proper fit on masks for doctors and nurses and the versatility of our approach augmenting an already tested product through customized digital design and fabrication.

summary This project focuses on how real-time motion interaction caused by people could put potential drivers for parametric design innovation, which would enhance the link between form trigger and result. Begin with discussing of background in interactive digital design, this article starts from three aspects in turn. First, the shape generating method based on a mesh geometric data format is discussed, which is the precondition of this research. Then, several kinds of behavior interaction are selected to be the input data which directly or indirectly trigger and affect this responsive shape formation process mentioned in the former part. In the last part, this research will summarize and propose a complete set of interactive behavior-oriented responsive digital prototyping design and propose several corresponding application scenarios.

summary Additive Manufacturing in Construction (AMC) envisions a possible alternative for predominantly manual construction with various benefits. In addition to the well-known extrusion-based implementations of AMC, other techniques have been developed to meet various visual and functional requirement. However, the application of Additive Manufacturing (AM) into construction projects has to be carefully evaluated, especially during the early phases of architectural design when important decisions are made. From this point, this work devised an AMC-Oriented Design Decision Support System (DDSS) to identify suitable building components which can be manufactured with specific AM methods. In such a DDSS, knowledge base and decision-making strategy are both critical. To this end, principle of leveraging Semantic Web techniques and Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methodologies will be addressed. At the current stage of our research, pre-printed building components using concrete material are considered during the decision support process.

summary As the concerns for pedestrian safety in station design are growing, multi-agent simulation becomes more widely used nowadays. While the difference between inputs in regard to their impacts on simulation outputs needs further research, previous studies fail to provide a global analysis of it in complex environments with limited computation resources. Therefore, regression-based SRC and revised Morris Method are employed in a sensitivity analysis of train station platform simulations. Results show that preference for escalators and alighting rate are influential parameters to all three concerned outputs while the standard deviation of walking speed is negligible. Given that most simulation users have limited time and resources, this paper provides a list of parameters that deserve the time and effort to calibrate together with a factor fixing method that can be applied in similar scenarios. In this way, simulation users can lower the uncertainty of train station simulations more efficiently.

summary In this paper, a novel synthetic workflow is presented for procedural generation of room relation graphs of floor plans from structured architectural datasets. Different from classical floor plan generation models, which are based on strong heuristics or low-level pixel operations, our method relies on parsing vectorized floor plans to generate their intended organizational graph for further graph-based deep learning. This research work presents the schema for the organizational graphs, describes the generation algorithms, and analyzes its time/space complexity. As a demonstration, a new dataset called CubiGraph5K is presented. This dataset is a collection of graph representations generated by the proposed algorithms, using the floor plans in the popular CubiCasa5K dataset as inputs. The aim of this contribution is to provide a matching dataset that could be used to train neural networks on enhanced floor plan parsing, analysis and generation in future research.

summary The explosion of geolocation data and data-based algorithms has the potential to analyze sophisticated urban areas and foster a more robust urban model. To better collect and organize the city data, this paper introduces a city-scale spatial database called ArchiBase, built upon Java and web APIs of open source databases. With hierarchical, layered, and regularly-updated spatial data defined by relation table, ArchiBase allows indexing and geometric searching of the entire city and supports applications and extensions for different cities. This research is from a graduate urban design course aiming to renew Prato, an industrial city in Italy. ArchiBase first creates the base version of Prato from multiple data sources, then illustrates the usability and expandability through three simple applications. The use of ArchiBase can better interpret future cities and demonstrate the unparalleled opportunities of collaboration and remote work for urban researchers and designers.

summary Cities are growing fast and facing unprecedented challenges as urban populations grow and resources are becoming scarce. A citys master planning involves a series of decision-making processes and requires knowledge from various domains. Urban planners are seeking computational support. We present a use case of land use type or building function allocations informed by urban energy performance as a pilot demonstrator for a semantic-web approach to these challenges. The software used for energy performance assessment was the City Energy Analyst. Using a quarter in downtown Singapore as an example, the results indicated 70% to 80% residential supplemented by other land use types favours efficient use of district cooling systems and photovoltaic panels. Urban planners may use the results to narrow down the search space of land use type ratios for the selected mixed-use area in Singapore. The use case serves as a pilot demonstrator for a broader research scope, the project Cities Knowledge Graph. To support master planning, the project aims to build an extendable plat-form to integrate more datasets and evaluation software for various urban qualities and domains.

summary Nowadays, climate problems, such as urban ventilation, heat island effect are becoming increasingly serious. Performance-oriented buildings that respond positively to the environment are constructing a sustainable future of the living environment. This research introduces an autonomous Self-Formation Wind Tunnel (SFWT) platform based on 120 dynamic grid mechanical devices, and its building cluster morphology generation workflow in the conceptual design stage, for the rapid and mass formation experiments. The Self-formation wind tunnel plat-form, which has the advantages of both perceptive and real-time data, is able to use the techniques of machine learning to provide a new design paradigm, from environmental performance to physical morphology.

summary As Chinese cities entering a so-called organic renewal era, building projects runs with much more constraints from high-density and high-rise surroundings. Such a situation makes the technical review in any urban planning bureau time-consuming and error-prone, which conflicts with the developers profits and citizens rights. This study introduces a preliminary system being developed for the planning bureau of Huangpu District, Shanghai. It has covered 21 code items among 44 computational ones of the local planning codes last year, which automatically generates technical reviews upon developers submissions. Due to the feasible level of BIM application in domestic projects, a set of strategic approaches, such as the standardization of CAD drawings and the reconstruction of an internal building information model, are adopted rather than developing the system on any BIM platform directly. Two examples of technical reviews about distance-checking between buildings and length-checking of facades are demonstrated, in which officers reached confidential judgments in seconds rather than several days conventionally.

summary The signage design of any large-scale transportation building is vital to its passengers wayfinding experiences. Firstly, a set of passengers paths should be re-designed by signage designers according to the latest requirements, which always deviates from the initial ones in large-scale projects or inevitably updates during a long-term running. Afterwards, the path design has to be transformed into the layout and content of signboards manually. It is a time-consuming and error-prone process. This study introduces a human-computer hybrid workflow keeping the flexible path design in the hands of designers and leaving the following procedures to an algorithm, which automatically generates signboard contents ready for construction. It is proved efficient with more than 3000 signboards in the project of PVG Airport, Shanghai. Furthermore, the designer got an opportunity to optimize his path design through various alternatives, which impossible traditionally.

summary Commercial complexes play an important role in contemporary cities, with elevators, escalators, and other paths on which people do not take natural movement in it. We consider them as spatial hyperlinking paths, which is originated from the webs hyperlinking technology. This paper studies the path network system in Taikoo Li, Sanlitun, Beijing, in three steps. Firstly, The path system is transformed into a network model, and its spatial network distribution is characterized using betweenness centrality. Secondly, a deep learning approach is used to measure the peoples flow at the selected 102 observation points. Then a multiple linear regression(MLR) analysis is conducted using the flow data as dependent variable. And there are 7 independent variables in three types, including betweenness centrality C, H1 and H2 that related to spatial hyperlinks, and B1, F1, F2, and F3 that related to floors. Thirdly, analyzing the MLR model.There are two conclusions. First, using multiple independent variables is better than one variable to fit the peoples flow distribution using the regression model. Second, escalators have the effect of enhancing peoples flow, while elevators have the opposite effect.

summary The cognition of Regionalism in architecture has transferred from the surface to the essence, from the building appearance to space. Modern Chinese-style houses have sprung up all over the country these years but always fail to find back the main characteristic of space in traditional residences. Therefore, the paper focuses on the question of 'what are the main features of the space in traditional Chinese residence', proposing 5 spatial quantification indexes for residential space and a score evaluation method to measure Chinese-style matching degree (Mch) with the help of a modified graph map generation method. 10 traditional Chinese houses and 16 built-up modern Chinese-style houses are taken as samples for empirical research. The paper also puts forward a hypothesis testing model for architects, which can quickly check the Chinese-style matching degree of the scheme and strongly support the design process.

summary The paper based on microclimate environment of the site takes the optimized design of rural building form to help the rural revitalization and sustainable development. The reconstructed house project in Baihua Village of Tangchi Town in Anhui Province is taken as the research case to discuss the form optimization strategies. Based on the principle of passive priority and active optimization, the building in Baihua Village is analyzed by field investigation and numerical simulation. First, the outdoor environment is interpreted by using Weather Tool software to offer a building form proposal. Then, with the drawing software CAD, ecological building simulation software Ecotect, and green building analysis software PKPM, the optimization strategy analysis of healthy building form was carried out to verify the optimal solution of building form based on Chinas national standards. Finally, this paper summarized and improved the rural building optimization design system for a healthy microclimate environment. The results of this paper are hoped to use for the contemporary rural architectural form design.
