summary Architecture Digital Platforms are capable of creating buildings that provide comfort that meets human thermal, acoustic and visual needs. However, some building technologies can choose the physical energy arena of the building on the expense of the mentioned aspects of human comfort. Nevertheless, aspects like emotional and psychological human comfort exist in limited studies practiced in interior design, or in active design of public spaces and on the landscape and urban scale. It is not mandatory in building design: How different spaces affect humans and what makes an environment stressful or not. Study gathers literature theoretically and categorizes it per topic: 1) Affective computing Introduction and uses, 2) Human responses to different stimulus and environments, 3) Factors that affect humans, 4) Technologies like brain imaging and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) that are used to measure human anxiety levels, as well as blood pressure and other indications on the person’s well-being, and some 5) Case Studies. Affective computing can be an addition to different pre- design analysis made to a project. Different areas of comfort like space dimensions, height, colour and shape can be the start of coding “Human Comfort” analysis software. Study has been restricted to previous research, and can be expanded further to experimentation. Future work aims to code it into Building Information Modelling Software.

summary Re-coding post-war Syria is an ongoing research and data platform, focused on innovation and collecting comprehensive, infrastructural and socioeconomic analytics, synchronization data, by using AI driven to give a more transparent image of innovating a new methodology to regenerate the future of post-war smart cities into advanced and sustainable urban environments in a smarter way (Fig. 1). The pressure to achieve a rapid Post-war smart city without clear strategy and comprehensive analysis of all aspects will cause a particularly catastrophic collapse in the interconnected social structure, services, education and health care system, leaving a long-term impact on the society. This paper presents the current status of the Research & Documentation methodology in the Data Collection phase by the objective investigations conducted through a series of local and international workshops species developed in this research called “Re-Coding“, offering consequent direct ground surveys, statistics and documentation study of the targeted areas, merging professionalism and youth power with local community to detect an open source data used as a tool to re-generate a precarious area towards a new methodology.

title KPI-Driven Parametric Design of Urban Systems

summary We present a framework for data-driven algorithmic generation and post-evaluation of alternative urban developments. These urban developments are framed by a strategic placement of diverse urban typologies whose spatial configurations follow design recommendations outlined in existing building and zoning regulations. By using specific rule-based generative algorithms, different spatial arrangements of these urban typologies, forming building blocks, are derived and visualized, given the aforementioned spatial, legal, and functional regulations. Once the envisioned urban configurations are generated, these are evaluated based on a number of aspects pertaining to spatial, economic, and thermal (environmental) dimensions, which are understood as the key performance indicators (KPIs) selected for informed ranking and evaluation. To facilitate the analysis and data-driven ranking of derived numeric KPIs, we deployed a diverse set of analytical techniques (e.g., conditional selection, regression models) enriched with visual interactive mechanisms, otherwise known as the Visual Analytics (VA) approach. The proposed approach has been tested on a case study district in the city of Vienna, Austria, offering real-world design solutions and assessments.

summary Most of the traditional studies on urban morphology are based on aerial views. However, the 2D plane model fails to describe the height information of buildings and the relation of buildings and the urban external space. An urban section is another map of an urban area. Through a series of continuous vertical urban slices, the city texture can be transformed into planar linear information containing height and width information. This paper proposes several indicators to describe a series of urban section slices and uses a three-dimensional coordinate mapping method Sectionmatrix to quantify and analyze the relation between the physical geometrical indicators and urban form from the section perspective. Through the case analysis of multiple residential blocks in Nanjing, China, the results showed that Sectionmatrix is convenient and efficient. Sectionmatrix relates the geometrical properties to the spatial characteristics of urban areas and provides a new way to classify, map and define building typologies. This new classification method reveals the tortuosity and complexity of residential blocks. By bridging the gap between quantity and form, the research also suggests other possible applications of Sectionmatrix as a control instrument and test framework for entire cities planning and design.

summary Our research team develops sustainable and inclusive typologies of micro-architecture. These micro-architectures, aided by cutting-edge technologies, give room to more inclusiveness and functional-ductility. We are convinced that nothing is static, there is not just a single possible future. Because of that, we generate real/virtual architectures that do not respond only to a single type of user, place or use. In this case, we introduce a typological model focused on health and wellness services, currently under development by parametric design. Located in the city of Córdoba, Argentina and placed near public parks (where many citizens practice sports and recreational outdoor activities)). We use energy-efficient local technology to power devices that adapt to local weather; moreover, the equipment provides performance data via audio, visual and tactile outputs, and in adjustable-position devices.

summary The forthcoming popularization of Self-driving Vehicles (SDVs) suggests a significant challenge in urban planning, as it enables new mobility patterns for urban citizens. While manufacturers have been developing visionary scenarios where cars become rentable mobile activity spaces, the impact of SDVs on the urban context is unclear. Through the analysis of the new social and technological functionalities developed by car manufacturers, and the projection of these functions into spatial scenarios of use within urban case study site, this paper explores the potential for the redesign of urban streetscapes to reclaim open spaces for pedestrian experiences and urban culture.

summary The dynamics of COVID-19 spread have been studied from an epidemiological perspective, at city, country, and global scales (Rabajante, 2020, Ma, 2020, and Giuliani et al., 2020), although after two years of the pandemic we know that viruses spread mostly through built environments. This study is part of the Spatiotemporal Modeling of COVID-19 spread in buildings research (Gomez, Hadi, and Kemenova et al., 2020 and 2021), which proposes a multidimensional model that integrates spatial configurations, temporal use of spaces, and virus characteristics into one multidimensional model. This paper presents a specific branch of this model that analyzes the behavioral parameters, such as vaccination, masking, and mRNA booster rates, and compares them to reducing room occupancy. We focused on human behavior, specifically human interactions within six feet. We utilized the multipurpose simulation software, AnyLogic, to quantify individual exposure to the virus, in the high school building by Perkins and Will. The results show how the most effective solution, reducing the occupancy rates or redesigning layouts, being the most impractical one, is as effective as 80% of the population getting a third boost.

summary The focus of the article is the impact of urban geometry and greenery on the surface temperature in a city and the Urban Heat Islands (UHI) effect. The research problem discussed in the article is to define optimal combination of such parameters as urban geometry, greenery and the LST to enhance the temperature comfort and reduce the UHI effect. The methodology combines CAD and GIS environments. Vector data of 1:10000 scale, from the National Database of Topographic Objects (BDOT10k) is used to analyse urban structure. GIS data include rasters derived from remote sensing: Land Surface Temperature (LST), Digital Surface Model (DSM) and Digital Terrain Model (DTM). The analysis covers areas in Szczecin and Gdynia, two mid-sized cities in Poland. The results indicate a more distinct dependence of LST on greenery parameters than on buildings. The main contribution of the article is the development of a uniform data grid based on CAD and GIS data, allowing for an objective analysis of the citys temperature comfort based on the parameters of buildings, greenery and LST.

summary Faced with the complexity of manual and intuitive management of urban rules in architectural and urban design, this paper offers a collaborative and digital human-computer approach. It aims to have an Authorized Bounding Volume (ABV) which uses the best target values of urban rules. It is a distributed constraint optimization problem. The ABV Generative Model uses multi-agent systems. It offers an intelligent system of urban morphology able to transform the urban rules, on a given plot, into a morphological delimitation permitted by the planning regulations of a city. The overall functioning of this system is based on two approaches: construction and supervision. The first is conducted entirely by the machine and the second requires the intervention of the designer to collaborate with the machine. The morphological translation of urban rules is sometimes contradictory and may require additional external relevance to urban rules. Designer arbitration assists the artificial intelligence in accomplishing this task and solving the problem. The Human-Computer collaboration is achieved at the appropriate time and relies on the degree of constraint satisfaction with fitness function. The resolution of the distributed constraint optimization problem is not limited to an automatic generation of urban rules, but involves also the production of multiple optimal-ABV conditioned both by urban constraints as well as relevance, chosen by the designer.

summary Positioned at the intersection of the computational modes of design and production, this research explains the principles and applications of a novel fabrication-informed geometric system called nesting. Applying the nesting fabrication method, the authors reimage the construction of complex forms by proposing geometric arrangements that lessen material waste and reduce production time, transportation cost, and storage space requirements. Through this method, appearance and performance characteristics are contingent on fabrication constraints and material behavior. In this study, the focus is on developing design rules for this method and investigating the main parameters involved in dividing the global geometry of a complex volume into stackable components when the first component in the stack gives shape to the second. The authors introduce three different strategies for nesting fabrication: 2D, 2.5D, and 3D nesting. Which of these strategies can be used depends on the geometrical needs of the design and available tools and materials. Next, by revisiting different fabrication approaches, the authors introduce readers to the possibility of large-scale objects with considerable overhangs without the need for nearly any temporary support structures. After establishing a workflow starting with the identification of geometric rules of nesting and ending with fabrication limits, this work showcases the proposed workflow through a series of case studies, demonstrating the feasibility of the suggested method and its capacity to integrate production constraints into the design process. Traversing from pragmatic to geometrical concerns, the approach discussed here offers an integrated approach supporting functional, structural, and environmental matters important when turning material, technical, assembly, and transportation systems into geometric parameters.

summary Current approaches to smart cities have focused on implementing technologies to harvest and analyse data through sensors and artificial intelligence to improve urban performance from the top-down. However, cities are complex systems of interconnected layers that change at different speeds. More persistent layers, like networks and occupation, must have smartness embedded in them through smarter design processes. In recent years, there has been an increase in digital tools for urban design, applying computational design methods and data analytics strategies, enabling collaborative and evidence-based approaches that support sustainable urban design. A critical evaluation of their potential to inform design is necessary to aid practitioners to choose and adopt these novel strategies and tools in practice. This paper presents a critical review of selected data-driven design cloud platforms, focusing on data-driven urban design approaches that can enable the use of ICTs to steer cities into a smarter future from the bottom-up.

summary Digital instruments are among the means of production of architecture. This improved productivity and reduced errors and inaccuracies in architectural design; however, in the case of parametric design, there is the risk of mistaking tools that may improve the overall quality of architecture for an approach that, as intrinsically scientific, guarantees quality architecture. This misunderstanding may characterise students’ first experience with parametric modelling. Therefore, a workshop has been developed as a seed to unfold the formal potentiality of parametric modelling with limited methodological bias and to inform on what to expect from parametric modelling. The workshop results show a preference for some parametric strategies over others. This tendency can be linked to those morphologies that, due to collective bias, are perceived as parametric; Consequently, the importance of working simultaneously on technical competence and cultural aspects of parametric architecture emerges as a necessity.

summary At the beginning of the twenty-first century, a discipline at the intersection of digital art and science explores how natural and artificial species are affected, coexist, and feed back to humans based on multi-scalar hybrid models. They embody types of surveillance entities or non-human custodians, and serve as inspiration for another generation of designs produced ten years later, the case studies that are presented here. This paper explains the design and parametric fundamentals of a digital architecture installation at the University of Alicante (Spain 2021) using CNC models and the TouchDesigner programming environment. The installation contains a clan of technological-virtual hybrid species, non-human custodians, which: (a) strengthen the Proposal’s discourse on the recognition of legal identity of the Mar Menor lagoon (Southeast Spain); (b) incorporate reactive designs; (c) help raise awareness of the effect of human actions on the lagoon’s ecology and nearby streams. The viewpoint is not anthropocentric, because it adopts the perspective of the foraging fish species or the oxygen-seeking algae species, among others, in order to reveal the deterioration processes. In most cases, the result is a sort of synaesthetic conversation that interweaves light, sound, movement and data.

summary Studies on the university campus commonly consider its spatial particularities in comparison to the city. However, the university debate about mobility also addresses urban-related challenges, like those posed by the dependence on vehicles and incentives for active mobility. Considering internal mobility, this work explores Wi-Fi connections from a Brazilian public university to trace community trajectories and population density on campus. We adopted objective data from the built environment for the application of a walkability index. The procedures were performed using GIS and the results shared for visualization in the Kepler.gl application. The results include walkability indices for different campus sectors. The discussion focuses on the potential use of the index in promoting a more integrated and less automobile-dependent campus.

title Affective Cartographies for Smarter Cities

summary This paper focuses on the study of affective and digital cartographies and on relating them systematically with their design applications. The research is based on the Design Science Research strategy, through the following logical structure: (1) Problem identification; (2) Communication; (3) Definition of the objective of the solution; (4) Artifact design, development and implementation; (5) Demonstration and Evaluation. The results presented correspond to phases (1), (2) and structuring of (3). The categorization was based on the principles: (a) dynamism (dynamic vs. static), (b) responsiveness (immediate vs. non-immediate), (c) implementation domain (hard vs. soft), and (d) affective aspect (quantitative vs. qualitative). This was synthesized in a chart, which was submitted to the analysis of a group of 4 experts from a public urban planning entity, and possible applications of affective cartographies in urban projects were obtained. Those were confronted with reality from the overlapping of the problems listed with the synthesis chart, positioning such cartographies as to their vocations.

summary Plenty of challenges all over the world are affecting the urban development of spaces in the cities, especially those of heritage sites; these urban spaces provide various ambiances that appeal to the senses. Although surrounded open spaces in heritage sites are full of rich, deep knowledge that plays an active role in the community perceptions, it has been recently neglected. A contribution is paid to the combination of digital technologies to help in preserving those spaces. Its integrated use could exponentially increase the effectiveness of conservation strategies of ancient buildings. GIS technology became a usual documentation tool for heritage managers, conservators, restorers, architects, archaeologists, painters, and all other categories of experts involved in cultural heritage activities. Consequently, the GIS has faced strong criticism as it is a tool for documentation without engaging in the public environment and the users’ needs; as a result, GIS cannot help in any enhancing process as it does not have any idea about the needs of the users. This paper analyses public uses efficiency in heritage public spaces in Cairene context using public participation geographic information system (PPGIS) methodology, as it gives attention to the term “user” to include the “public” incorporating the concept of “public participation” commonly used in planning. An online survey was set up, based on Google Maps, where respondents were asked to place and rate twenty-five items on an interactive map done by (ARCGIS 10.4). These items were based on the criteria of placemaking to make those spaces full of creative ambiance to be more attractive and useful to the communities. Finally, 200 valid surveys have been collected and mapped 1500 opinions have been mapped. The Results of this research show that PPGIS is an effective tool in measuring the efficiency of those heritage public spaces, which may be valuable for future planning.

summary A radical and rapid change in the world in the time of COVID19 pandemic powerfully brings the new era of digitalisation, and the 4th generation of the industrial revolution of Internet of Things (IoT) into practice. This raises many questions regarding the future smart city’s development in Arab region: Are our cities ready for such a rapid transformation towards this digital era? Do cities have adequate infrastructure for this? What are the guidelines required to achieve Smart City (SC) models in the Arab region? The aim of this research is to assess the status quo of the new developed cities in the Arab region as models of smart cities and indicate the factors that prove their maturity and readiness for the future digital transformation in the post-pandemic era. The research methodology is an application tool on two case studies, to prove that the features and characteristics of the existing on-ground initiatives and programmes support the digitalisation movement in these two cities. The research findings are a paving roadmap for the decision makers towards efficiently functioning models for sustainable SCs in the Arab region.

summary Based on the concepts of Sustainable Urbanism and performance-based design, this work proposes the development of a neighborhood in the city of Sao José dos Campos (SJC), Sao Paulo-Brazil. The performance-based design method was used through parametric algorithmic tools - such as Grasshopper - for construction, analysis and the urban design multicriteria optimization. Five optimization functions were used: walkability, sunset view, radiation in hot periods, minimum hours of sun exposition and maximum number of floors. The use of optimization software accommodates the numerous conflicting requirements of the model. The results obtained are a systematization of the process and a system that allows various urban solutions based on numerical performance criteria. The selected solutions achieved walkability indicators greater than 80%.

summary The paper aims to analyse the parameters for dimensioning the urban block in the context of the ongoing debate over Rio de Janeiro's new Master Plan (PLC N°44/2021). The analysis focuses on three main points: (1) the definition of the block, (2) the discrepancies found in this regard in the land parcelling system, and (3) the limitations that gated communities impose on the parameterisation of the block. The paper briefly relates the role of the master plan in Brazilian urban policy. Next, it points out the arguments that emerged during the public hearings over the new proposed master plan regarding block sizing. Then, it analyses Rio's urban law framework and the literature regarding the city's road network, cul-de-sac structures and gated communities, supported by the blocks and the streets georeferenced maps available at the Rio's Municipality and the Open Street Maps platform. Finally, it discusses the analysis outcomes with the arguments that emerged during the public hearings regarding block sizing.

summary Among many legal processes and political issues that hinder the Land Regularization of informal urban settlements, the delay in the production of technical documents (blueprints and descriptive memorials) and the number of errors in the systematization of information stand out. Thus, this work presents an information design methodology, aiming to optimize the documentation process through Geographic Information Systems (GIS). As a result, there was an average reduction in the production time of blueprints and memorials when compared to previous experiences of standard documentation. Errors that were still persistent were found exactly in processes that were not yet automated and needed a certain degree of mechanization. Therefore, even though the legal and political challenges seem insurmountable and need to be on the agenda, it is important to project possibilities for the technical barriers to the regularization of informal settlements, to which information design can contribute.
