title Beyond Embodiment - An Existential Project of Digital Tectonics in the Posthumanist Discourses

summary The paper is a theoretical review on the nature of tectonic expressions in the context of digital design and construction. By investigating the origin of digital tectonics as a methodological exploration to dissolve the oppositional relationship between the digital and the tectonic, the paper identifies the lack of focus on the essential task of tectonic expression-constructing embodied experience on the building form. Therefore, the paper firstly reviews how tectonic expression is understood in its traditional sense, particularly within its indispensable relationship to human body in order to construct the empathic perception of structural dynamics. Then, the paper reveals the disassociation between human body and tectonic form in the posthumanist mode of design-to-construction of the digital age. Further, by articulating the dynamic nature of embodiment in the posthumanist scenario where the body is constantly reconstructed by the technocultural conext of the living environment, the paper proposes a theoretical model arguing for a reinterpretation of both the nature and the task of digital tectonics in order to reclaim the embodied experience in the digital age. Digital tectonics becomes an existential project that must be designed within its mutual determining relationship with the historical-cultural construction of the body-self.

title Big Data vs Smart Data on the Generation of Floor Plans with Deep Learning

summary Due to the progressive growth of data dimensionality, addressing how much data and time is required to train deep learning models has become an important research topic. Thus, in this paper, we present a benchmark for generating floor plans with Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks in which we compare 10 trained models on a dataset of 80.000 samples, the models use different data dimensions and hyper-parameters on the training phase, beyond this objective, we also tested the capability of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to reduce the dataset noise. The models' assessment was made on more than 6 million with the Frétche Inception Distance (FID). The results show that such models can rapidly achieve similar or even better FID results if trained with 800 images of 512x512 pixels, in comparison to high dimensional datasets of 256x256 pixels, however, using CNNs to enhance data consistency reproduced optimal results using around 27.000 images.

title Reinforcement Learning for Architectural Design-Build - Opportunity of Machine Learning in a Material-informed Circular Design Strategy

summary This paper discusses the potentials of reinforcement learning in game engine for design, implementation, and construction of architecture. It inaugurates a new design tool that promotes a material-informed design-build workflow for architectural design and construction industries that achieves a comprehensive circular economy. As a proof of concept, it uses the project Reform Standard, a machine-learning-based searching system that designs new shell structures composed of existing wasted materials, as a demonstration to discuss how reinforcement learning, machine vision and automated searching algorithm in the game engine can promote a material-aware design and converts wastes into construction materials. The demonstrator project sorts and transforms irregular chunks of wasted broken plastics into a new form. Instead of recycling those wastes in an energy-intensive process, the game engine is capable of finding the intricacy and new machine-oriented aesthetics in those otherwise neglected wastes. Furthermore, future research directions such as robotic-aided construction are discussed by exposing the potentials and problems in the demonstrated project. Finally, the future circular strategy is discussed beyond the demonstrated tests and local uses. The standardization of material, legislation and material lifecycle needs to be comprehensively considered and designed by architects and designers during conceptual design phase.

summary Immersive Virtual Reality (iVR) systems hold a promise to affect design behavior by allowing users to experience presence, as they are embodied in the digital display. However, the lack of research articulating how embodiment enabling media change design behavior limits integrating iVR systems in design pedagogy with a well-defined framework. This paper presents the preliminary results from a case study of a work in progress comparing the communication patterns of critique sessions in an architecture studio in two kinds of media: iVR and non-immersive desk-crits. We employed protocol analysis methods to track the distribution of conversational turns and the first occurrence of design issues emerging over the different media. Results show that compared to non-immersive critiques, the iVR had a lower number of conversational turns and an increase in the first occurrence generated by students, indicating support in a learner-centered activity. Elucidating the effect of the communication medium on design behavior provides an empirical foundation for its inclusion in a design theory that encapsulates embodied cognition.

summary Architecture Digital Platforms are capable of creating buildings that provide comfort that meets human thermal, acoustic and visual needs. However, some building technologies can choose the physical energy arena of the building on the expense of the mentioned aspects of human comfort. Nevertheless, aspects like emotional and psychological human comfort exist in limited studies practiced in interior design, or in active design of public spaces and on the landscape and urban scale. It is not mandatory in building design: How different spaces affect humans and what makes an environment stressful or not. Study gathers literature theoretically and categorizes it per topic: 1) Affective computing Introduction and uses, 2) Human responses to different stimulus and environments, 3) Factors that affect humans, 4) Technologies like brain imaging and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) that are used to measure human anxiety levels, as well as blood pressure and other indications on the person’s well-being, and some 5) Case Studies. Affective computing can be an addition to different pre- design analysis made to a project. Different areas of comfort like space dimensions, height, colour and shape can be the start of coding “Human Comfort” analysis software. Study has been restricted to previous research, and can be expanded further to experimentation. Future work aims to code it into Building Information Modelling Software.

summary This paper addresses the importance and development of cultural transformations involving the design process in architecture and the advent of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in civil construction activities and how its implementation in a coordinated, collaborative and interoperable way contributes to a diagnosis of Clash Detection between diferentes design projects, before building construction, saving excessive costs and rework. Taking as its main reference the BIM Maturity Matrix of Succar (2009), the proposed BIM Project Integration Maturity Matrix contributes to the awareness of bringing designers and builders closer to design activities, to encourage the integration of design processes involving the building, to consolidate an environment of ease of communication between participants, the organization of documentation and, above all, prioritize the compatibility between projects to avoid conflicts, excess costs and rework, resulting in a higher quality of the final project.

summary The academy aims to understand and insert digital technologies in the collaborative, interdisciplinary and innovative process. Thus, the process of this project aims to develop an itinerant space that enables integration between academics and the community, associated with digital technologies, making it essential as a precursor of knowledge, innovation and social well-being. Based on concepts from Smart City and Smart Campus, as it addresses a phenomenon of development intrinsic to technological processes in pursuit of environmental quality, it appropriates of digital manufacturing tools as a programmatic production model. Inspired by the generation of physical objects from digital models along the lines of Wikihouse, a modular architectural executive method was developed as an alternative for flexibility and movement. At the end of the process, there is the conception of the TEC-House, idealized as an itinerant modular space, based on anthropometric parameters where function determines the way they integrate, constituting modifying places.

summary The paper describes the findings of the applied research project by Institute Integrative Design (currently ICDP) HGK FHNW and ERNE AG Holzbau to design and manufacture prefabricated wooden façades in the collaborative design manner between architects and industry. As such, it is an attempt to respond to the current interdisciplinary split in the construction, which blocks innovation and promotes standardized inefficient building solutions. Within this project, we apply three innovations in the industrial setup that result in the integrated design-to-production process of individualized, cost-efficient and well-crafted façades. The collaborative design approach is a method in which architect, engineer and manufacturer start exchange on the early stage of the project during the collaborative design workshops. Digital design and fabrication tools enable architects to generate a large scope of façade variations within production feasibility of the manufacturer and engineers to prepare files for robotic production. Novel multi-robot fabrication processes, developed with the industrial partner, allows for complex façade assembly. This paper introduces the concept of digital craftsmanship, manifested in a mixed fabrication system, which intelligently combines automated and manual production to obtain economic feasibility and highest aesthetic quality. Finally, we describe the design and fabrication of the project demonstrator consisting of four intricate façades on a modular office building, inspired by local traditional solutions, which validate the developed methods and highlight the architectural potential of the presented approach.

summary Fused deposition modelling (FDM) 3D printing of formworks for concrete has the potential to increase geometric freedom in concrete construction. However, one major limitation of FDM printed formworks is that they are fragile and often cannot support the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the concrete. The research project 'Eggshell' combines robotic 3D printing of formwork with the casting of a fast-hardening concrete to reduce hydrostatic pressure to a minimum. Eggshell can be used to fabricate architectural-scale building components; however, knowledge of the influence formwork geometry has on the hydrostatic pressure resistance is still sparse, resulting in unexpected breakages of the formwork. This paper presents an empirical study into the breakage behaviour of FDM printed formworks when subjected to hydrostatic pressure. Firstly, the study aims to give a first insight into the breakage behaviour of formworks with a constant cross-section by casting a self-compacting concrete into the formwork until breakage. Then, we investigate if three-dimensional patterning of the formwork can have a beneficial effect on the breakage behaviour. Finally, the preliminary results are validated through the fabrication of two full-scale columns. The empirical results point towards the fact that sharp corners in formworks are weaker compared to rounded corners. Although the presented results are still preliminary, they mark an important step in the development of reliable design and fabrication strategies using 3D printed formworks.

summary This paper is based on two main concepts: Concept Design and Artificial Intelligence (A.I.). According to Leach (2021), people are surrounded by A.I. in various aspects of daily life. This circumstance highlights the importance of creative professionals to interpret A.I. as a Design tool. The objective of this paper is to evaluate how A.I. can be used in early stages of the ideation process for the development of an artifact. The methodological framework is exploratory-descriptive and was developed through a case study. The practical contribution is to exemplify the simultaneous use of AI and Design tools in a simulation of the creative phase of a furniture project, this result was diagrammed to represent a systematization of where each tool fits into the creative process. The theoretical contribution is to add to the debate around this subject.

summary The vast majority of children's environments are planned and organized considering the perceptions of adults. Co-design is an important tool for adding users to design process. The objective of this work is to include children in the design process of a Pocket Park, using methods and tools to support Co-design. The work was structured based on literature review, Focus Group, Culture Maker, Digital Fabrication and Prototyping. Two online synchronous workshops were held with 23 students and 2 primary school teachers. A survey indicated that the collaborative project has a great contribution in the design process of urban spaces. Promotes assertive communication between those involved, welcoming their ideas in a flexible way. It also indicates that Digital Fabrication and Prototyping equipment are important vehicles in the construction of objects that facilitate communication during the design process, such as toys present in children's daily lives. Finally, there was a rich exchange of information and learning during the design process.

summary The Co-design method has great relevance in the inclusion of different classes of users in the Design Process (DP), such as Visually Impaired People (PwDS) and children. This work indicates results of three Co-design dynamics. Focus Group, guided tour, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and workshops were carried out, as strategies for the inclusion of different users in the DP. The process of designing an inclusive signage board for PwDS is presented. Next, the project of inclusive playgrounds for visually impaired children. Finally, an activity carried out with basic education students, combining new technologies in the child's learning process. Participants were encouraged to express their knowledge through different tools that adapted to their reality. The results show the importance of including different methods, tools and resources to support the DP. In addition, Digital Fabrication and Prototyping are techniques that enhance Co-design, as they act as congratulators for communication between the designer and users.

summary The Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) launched the Cultural History Project in 2021 to mark the 40th anniversary of the organization and the 41st anniversary of the conference. This initiative has provided an opportunity to reflect upon the legacy and trends of the organization as a method for considering its future. The Cultural History Project began with an open-access digital archive of the organization’s Proceedings and Quarterlies and evolved into a larger discourse about how the ACADIA community values and promotes forms of computational knowledge. A summary essay included in the 2021 Proceedings (Image 2) reflects on what the archive reveals about ACADIA and its “habits”. Habits are settled tendencies or practices, especially ones that are difficult to relinquish. The term implies repetition, perhaps unconscious, that becomes normalized through its reiteration. The 2023 ACADIA Conference, “Habits of the Anthropocene,” marks the 43rd anniversary of the conference and the 42nd anniversary of ACADIA as an organization. What are the computational habits we need to identify, recall, question, break, and replace with new (or perhaps old) ways of thinking and working?

summary Among many legal processes and political issues that hinder the Land Regularization of informal urban settlements, the delay in the production of technical documents (blueprints and descriptive memorials) and the number of errors in the systematization of information stand out. Thus, this work presents an information design methodology, aiming to optimize the documentation process through Geographic Information Systems (GIS). As a result, there was an average reduction in the production time of blueprints and memorials when compared to previous experiences of standard documentation. Errors that were still persistent were found exactly in processes that were not yet automated and needed a certain degree of mechanization. Therefore, even though the legal and political challenges seem insurmountable and need to be on the agenda, it is important to project possibilities for the technical barriers to the regularization of informal settlements, to which information design can contribute.

summary Social indicators are fundamental tools for measuring social facts, and their use has the potential to facilitate broad access to information. In 2020, the World experienced the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic, which impacted the socio-spatial reality of cities around the world in several aspects and deepened social inequalities. As part of a coping Covid-19 project by ArqPET, the Somar Platform, this paper presents a mapping process of the spread of Covid-19 in Fortaleza during the four months after its arrival. The mapping, which aims to inform public policies and provides documents that support the demand for adequate housing and sanitary infrastructure in the neglected spaces of the city, relates the spread of the virus to social indicators and uses database technology to optimize its productions.

summary Parasympathy is an interactive spatial experience operating as an extension of visitors’ minds. By integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI), wearable technologies, affective computing (Picard 1995; Picard 2003), and neuroscience, this project blurs the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres and empowers users’ brains to solicit positive changes from their spaces based on their real-time biophysical reactions and emotions.

The objective is to deploy these technologies in support of the wellbeing of the community especially when related to social matters such as inclusion and social justice in our built environment. Consequently, this project places the users’ emotions at the very center of its space by performing real-time responses to the emotional state of the individuals within the space.

summary The COVID-19 pandemic has made most schools, universities, and gathering spaces fully virtual. Commonly used communication platforms such as Zoom, Skype, and Microsoft Teams are limited in recreating physical interactions and offer mostly static interfaces with limited occasions for spontaneous encounters. This project creates a space that seeks to address this issue, first through the digitization of familiar physical spaces, and then through their augmentation via WebXR technologies[1]. A gamification strategy is adopted, where users can virtually learn, collaborate and socialize through personalized avatars within a dynamic and multi-sensorial digital environment. In this paper, we present a completed prototype that is currently being tested at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. The school of architecture has been digitized and experientially augmented thanks to an asymmetrical system that offers rich modalities of interaction through different platforms. The project builds upon the wide experiential potential of digital platforms, otherwise not possible in reality, and implements a customized multi-modal user interface (Reeves et al. 2004).

summary Short Stack is a bare minimal structure using only laminated sheets of structural metal decking for all elements of its structure and enclosure. The project operates under a simple principle. Structural metal decking is a one-way system that resists loads well in one direction, but not in the other. When this decking is stacked into rotated sections and tensioned together, the resultant sandwich of corrugated metal is resistant to loading in every direction. These sandwiches become walls, floors, and roofs to a temporary structure. The compounded effect at the edges of the rotated and cropped decking is one of filigree or an ornamental articulation. The sandwich, which is mostly hollow due to the section of the decking, provides a sense of airy lightness that is at odds with its bulky mass. The structure, therefore, teeters between being unexpectedly open and at once heavy. The economy of the project is in its uniformity and persistent singularity. By maintaining a single palette of material and using a plasma cutting CNC bed to cut each section of the decking, the structure is simply assembled. The digital intelligence that lies underneath the apparent formal simplicity of the project is two-fold. Firstly, each sheet of metal decking is different from the next. Because of the locations of bolt-holes and constant variability of rotation and cropping of each sheet, it is a project that expresses uniformity rather than articulation through discretization. Secondly, the project appears solid and monolithic but is hollowed structurally to minimize the weight of the assembly. Parametric tools are implemented to maximize material efficiencies by hollowing the interior of each sandwich for load optimization. The project is presently in prototyping and documentation and will go into construction in Spring 2021 on a site in downtown Denver.

summary Children's playgrounds or also called playgrounds are open spaces, the basis for children's recreation. Important for the inclusion and mobility of visually impaired children in the social environment, through inclusive urban facilities that stimulate new experiences for their cognitive development. In this context, the use of Co-design with visually impaired people, in the design processes of children's playgrounds, assumes an importance for an inclusive project based on their experiences. Thus, it aimed to promote a project together, to provide more comfort and safety to users. It presents as main results as better colors, materials and types of toys for children with visual impairment to be competent in a playground including from the application of methods, tools and resources in the Co-design process.

summary In the manufacturing process, the production of standardized prefabricated components is highly efficient, which can benefit the demand for mass production of standardized architecture after World War II. However, overstandardized architecture sometimes cannot satisfy the demand for uniqueness in an architecture project. At this time, bespoke components began to be used to solve the over-simplification of aesthetics of architecture. Besides, with the help of digital fabrication, bespoke components could achieve mass customization in architecture. The research designs two joints: prefabricated aluminum joints and bespoke aluminum joints, which aims to develop bespoke joints to aluminum components with ornamental characteristics and become a part of architecture with practical function and ornamental function. Furthermore, in the process of generating bespoke joints, improve the deficiency when conducting lost-foam casting.
