summary Re-coding post-war Syria is an ongoing research and data platform, focused on innovation and collecting comprehensive, infrastructural and socioeconomic analytics, synchronization data, by using AI driven to give a more transparent image of innovating a new methodology to regenerate the future of post-war smart cities into advanced and sustainable urban environments in a smarter way (Fig. 1). The pressure to achieve a rapid Post-war smart city without clear strategy and comprehensive analysis of all aspects will cause a particularly catastrophic collapse in the interconnected social structure, services, education and health care system, leaving a long-term impact on the society. This paper presents the current status of the Research & Documentation methodology in the Data Collection phase by the objective investigations conducted through a series of local and international workshops species developed in this research called “Re-Coding“, offering consequent direct ground surveys, statistics and documentation study of the targeted areas, merging professionalism and youth power with local community to detect an open source data used as a tool to re-generate a precarious area towards a new methodology.

title Affective Cartographies for Smarter Cities

summary This paper focuses on the study of affective and digital cartographies and on relating them systematically with their design applications. The research is based on the Design Science Research strategy, through the following logical structure: (1) Problem identification; (2) Communication; (3) Definition of the objective of the solution; (4) Artifact design, development and implementation; (5) Demonstration and Evaluation. The results presented correspond to phases (1), (2) and structuring of (3). The categorization was based on the principles: (a) dynamism (dynamic vs. static), (b) responsiveness (immediate vs. non-immediate), (c) implementation domain (hard vs. soft), and (d) affective aspect (quantitative vs. qualitative). This was synthesized in a chart, which was submitted to the analysis of a group of 4 experts from a public urban planning entity, and possible applications of affective cartographies in urban projects were obtained. Those were confronted with reality from the overlapping of the problems listed with the synthesis chart, positioning such cartographies as to their vocations.

summary A radical and rapid change in the world in the time of COVID19 pandemic powerfully brings the new era of digitalisation, and the 4th generation of the industrial revolution of Internet of Things (IoT) into practice. This raises many questions regarding the future smart city’s development in Arab region: Are our cities ready for such a rapid transformation towards this digital era? Do cities have adequate infrastructure for this? What are the guidelines required to achieve Smart City (SC) models in the Arab region? The aim of this research is to assess the status quo of the new developed cities in the Arab region as models of smart cities and indicate the factors that prove their maturity and readiness for the future digital transformation in the post-pandemic era. The research methodology is an application tool on two case studies, to prove that the features and characteristics of the existing on-ground initiatives and programmes support the digitalisation movement in these two cities. The research findings are a paving roadmap for the decision makers towards efficiently functioning models for sustainable SCs in the Arab region.

summary Nowadays, ICT-based participatory design methods, techniques and tools are increasingly used across the globe. A majority of these are employed in high-income “developed” countries with advanced democratic systems which aim at including citizens; desires, needs, proposals as valuable input in city-making processes. In contrast, in the Global South, only a limited number of ICT-based practices aim to empower the citizens in urban design and planning at higher instances. There is a need for deeper research into how citizens can be involved in urban design in developing countries like Turkey situated in between the Global North and the South. In this context, this research will focus on Istanbul, Turkey as a key case. Different than the developed world context, enabling ICT-based participation in Turkey has a wide range of challenges. Among those are the lack of open and governmental data and transparency, the unwillingness of the policymakers to promote and employ participatory design, top-down approaches are the other weak points of these countries. Responding to these challenges, the aims of this study are: 1) to critically address the weaknesses and requirements of existing urban development practices in developing countries with a focus on Turkey, Istanbul and 2) to discuss the possible potentials of ICT-based participation tools and techniques to involve citizens in city-making processes.

summary Precinct-level pedestrian simulation often requires moderate to high-level modelling skills with a steep learning curve, and is usually non-flexible, time-consuming and exclusive of the broader public community. Confronting these problems, our research investigates a novel and agile workflow to test precinct pedestrian behaviours by melding agent-based simulation (ABM) and responsive real-time form modelling mechanisms within accessible visualisation of city and precinct environments in a game engine, Unity 3D. We designed an agent system prototype of configurable and interoperable nodes that may be placed in an urban modelling scenario. Realtime CSG, a fast polygon-based modelling plugin, is also introduced to our workflow where users can use the evidence observed when running a scenario to quickly adjust the street morphology and buildings in response. In this process, end users are kept in the design loop and may make critical adjustments, whereby a responsive, collective, informed design agenda for our built environments can inform more detailed outcomes of pedestrian behaviour and action and promote more efficient collaborations for both professionals and local communities.

summary In the field of urban architecture and design, augmented reality (AR)-based landscape visualization is useful for building consensus among stakeholders at the design stage. An integrated AR and drone method can visualize future and past landscapes from an aerial perspective but has to address the problem of occlusion, where a 3D virtual model is displayed in front of the real-world objects. In this study, we propose an AR and drone integrated landscape visualization method to handle occlusion by linking the drone's location information in the real world and the camera in the virtual world. The method uses a 3D model of an existing building, which is part of the city model, to represent the 3D model of the design target as if the target were behind the existing building in the real world. Users can use the perspective of the drone, which flies along a set route, to examine the future landscape with high accuracy, as visualized using AR with occlusion handling.

summary Our research team develops sustainable and inclusive typologies of micro-architecture. These micro-architectures, aided by cutting-edge technologies, give room to more inclusiveness and functional-ductility. We are convinced that nothing is static, there is not just a single possible future. Because of that, we generate real/virtual architectures that do not respond only to a single type of user, place or use. In this case, we introduce a typological model focused on health and wellness services, currently under development by parametric design. Located in the city of Córdoba, Argentina and placed near public parks (where many citizens practice sports and recreational outdoor activities)). We use energy-efficient local technology to power devices that adapt to local weather; moreover, the equipment provides performance data via audio, visual and tactile outputs, and in adjustable-position devices.

summary This article describes a study on the 1930 Extension – Remodeling – Beautification Plan of the city of Rio de Janeiro, elaborated by Alfred Agache but only partially built, and its influences on the city. The research is divided in two stages: the first comprises the examination of primary and secondary sources in order to obtain a better understanding of the Plan, including the geolocation of the information gathered; the second involves the elaboration of this information in a 3D model and its visualization in two different Augmented Reality systems for public consultation by students and researchers.

summary The dynamics of COVID-19 spread have been studied from an epidemiological perspective, at city, country, and global scales (Rabajante, 2020, Ma, 2020, and Giuliani et al., 2020), although after two years of the pandemic we know that viruses spread mostly through built environments. This study is part of the Spatiotemporal Modeling of COVID-19 spread in buildings research (Gomez, Hadi, and Kemenova et al., 2020 and 2021), which proposes a multidimensional model that integrates spatial configurations, temporal use of spaces, and virus characteristics into one multidimensional model. This paper presents a specific branch of this model that analyzes the behavioral parameters, such as vaccination, masking, and mRNA booster rates, and compares them to reducing room occupancy. We focused on human behavior, specifically human interactions within six feet. We utilized the multipurpose simulation software, AnyLogic, to quantify individual exposure to the virus, in the high school building by Perkins and Will. The results show how the most effective solution, reducing the occupancy rates or redesigning layouts, being the most impractical one, is as effective as 80% of the population getting a third boost.

summary The COVID-19 pandemic generated great changes in world societies, and Brazilian cities felt strongly the effects of the disease in physical and social aspects. Thus, this article seeks to describe a work experience involving COVID-19 data for use in urban planning analyses. Its main methodology is the treatment of data about the pandemic in the city of Fortaleza and georeferencing these to generate urban readings. The work resulted in a shapefile file that could be shared among those who wanted to research how the dissemination of the new coronavirus was influenced by specific urban issues in the city of Fortaleza, in addition to generating learning for the students involved in the process. From this it was possible to observe the importance of discussions both on urban policies and the importance of data in urban planning models adopted in the country in view of the new pandemic situation.

summary This interdisciplinary work, which integrates teaching, research and extension, incorporated students from 5 Latin American universities of Architecture and different Design Degrees. The experience that was developed in the first semester of 2021, during the Covid-19 pandemic, deals with the contribution that design and digital media can make to the social problems of local communities. Through the collaborative design of artifacts, interfaces, spaces and representations that articulate the natural, the artificial and the digital, the objective was to value and make visible the natural and cultural heritage of "La Boca", a coastal neighborhood of the city of Santa Fe, located in the flood valley of the Paraná River. Innovative ideas were provided to drive sustainable development processes through proposals that rescue the knowledge and resources of the place using digital mediations. The article analyzes the conceptual bases, methodology and results of this difficult but original experience.

summary The focus of the article is the impact of urban geometry and greenery on the surface temperature in a city and the Urban Heat Islands (UHI) effect. The research problem discussed in the article is to define optimal combination of such parameters as urban geometry, greenery and the LST to enhance the temperature comfort and reduce the UHI effect. The methodology combines CAD and GIS environments. Vector data of 1:10000 scale, from the National Database of Topographic Objects (BDOT10k) is used to analyse urban structure. GIS data include rasters derived from remote sensing: Land Surface Temperature (LST), Digital Surface Model (DSM) and Digital Terrain Model (DTM). The analysis covers areas in Szczecin and Gdynia, two mid-sized cities in Poland. The results indicate a more distinct dependence of LST on greenery parameters than on buildings. The main contribution of the article is the development of a uniform data grid based on CAD and GIS data, allowing for an objective analysis of the citys temperature comfort based on the parameters of buildings, greenery and LST.

summary Architecture Digital Platforms are capable of creating buildings that provide comfort that meets human thermal, acoustic and visual needs. However, some building technologies can choose the physical energy arena of the building on the expense of the mentioned aspects of human comfort. Nevertheless, aspects like emotional and psychological human comfort exist in limited studies practiced in interior design, or in active design of public spaces and on the landscape and urban scale. It is not mandatory in building design: How different spaces affect humans and what makes an environment stressful or not. Study gathers literature theoretically and categorizes it per topic: 1) Affective computing Introduction and uses, 2) Human responses to different stimulus and environments, 3) Factors that affect humans, 4) Technologies like brain imaging and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) that are used to measure human anxiety levels, as well as blood pressure and other indications on the person’s well-being, and some 5) Case Studies. Affective computing can be an addition to different pre- design analysis made to a project. Different areas of comfort like space dimensions, height, colour and shape can be the start of coding “Human Comfort” analysis software. Study has been restricted to previous research, and can be expanded further to experimentation. Future work aims to code it into Building Information Modelling Software.

summary This article approaches the theme of digital collage as a technique of graphic representation in Architecture and Urbanism emerging in cyberculture. The main objective is to highlight the underlying logic of digital collage as a representation language of contemporary architecture and urbanism projects. From a methodological point of view, this article is the result of qualitative, exploratory and descriptive research. In addition to the literature review on collage as an artistic and architectural expression, and its incorporation into digital culture, a study of multiple cases was carried out, taking as empirical object the graphic production of ten architecture and urbanism offices from different parts of the world. Finally, it appears that digital collages are consistent with the hybrid contemporary reality and create new poetics capable of representing the semantic and communicative dimension of architecture and urbanism design.

title A comparative analysis of the digital re-constructions of muqarnas systems: The case study of Sultanhani muqarnas in Central Anatolia

summary This paper presents a comparative case study on the digital modeling workflows of a particular muqarnas system. After the literature review and the definition of the context, several digital modeling workflows were described as element-based, tessellation-based and block-based workflows by using computer-aided design and parametric modeling software. As the case study of this research, these workflows were tested on a muqarnas design located at the Sultanhani Caravanserai in Central Anatolia. Then, workflows were compared according to three qualities: analytical, generative, and performative. The outcomes of element-based workflow has more analytical solutions for the study, where tessellation-based workflow has more generative potential and block-based workflow is more performative.

summary This article aims to identify and analyze inductive aspects (those which go from particular instances to the general configuration) present in ideation phases of digital design projects (such as apps, websites and tools for companies’ internal communications), with special emphasis on how induction occurs in creative processes. Using a qualitative methodological approach, the analysis is based on in-depth, semi-structured interviews with digital designers, on a literature review on the subjects of creativity and classic design method, as well as on a design documentary. Research findings suggest the importance of combining the use of verbal and visual communication resources in group dynamics; the need for designers to be highly proficient in the tools and techniques used while generating new alternatives, regardless of their physical/analogical or virtual/digital nature; and to allocate, whenever possible, ample time to explore ideas in order to push the limits of each project being developed.

summary COVID-19 was a sanitary crisis of international impact. However, its effects weren’t experienced equally. In Fortaleza, epidemiological reports (2021;2022) point to different infection patterns between high Human Development Index (HDI) and low HDI neighborhoods, which surfaced the hypothesis that certain territories’ characteristics could correlate to COVID-19 data. This article describes a phase of a three-phase research, whose objective is to identify correlations between urban and demographic (UD) data to COVID-19 data. To this, a literature review was done to select seven UD variables and four COVID-19 ones, then, Spearman’s correlation was applied in four pandemic time frames (TF). Results show that literacy rates, monthly income and energy have either low or moderate positive correlations with contamination rates in most TF. However, they’ve shown low or moderate correlations with lethality rates in three TF. Population density showed low positive correlations to either lethality rates or total number of deaths in three TF.

title BIO-FADEN 2.0 Pavilion: Experimental Study of Algorithmic-Generative Design and Digital Fabrication with 3D Printing of a Bionic Pavilion Prototype in the Midwest Region of Brazil

summary This research has as main objective to determine the possibilities and limitations of digital design and digital fabrication by 3D printing of a prototype of bionic pavilion with non-Euclidean geometric shapes in reduced size inspired by fruits present in the MidWest Region of Brazil. The work was structured in 3 stages: Rationale, Materials and Logistic, and Experimentation. The Rationale consisted of a literature review on the concepts of: bionics, generative-algorithmic design, digital fabrication, 3D printing and prototyping. The Materials and Logistics stage consisted of the presentation and classification into categories of materials and the logistics that were usedTthe experiment consisted of 4 phases: Graphic code and 3D digital modeling of the bionic pavilion; operationalization of digital fabrication; selection of 3D printing digital fabrication technology and; digital fabrication by 3D printing. The main result of the research is that digital technologies - rhinoceros 5.0 software, grasshopper software - allow to design a prototype of a pavilion of complex shape or of small size inspired by natural structures.

title Architecture and Neuroscience: Green Areas Contributions to Hospitalized Patients’ Homeostasis

summary Hospitalization is, for the patient, a neuropsychophysiological stressor, thus pertinent theories point to architectural stimuli as a tool for the homeostasis restoration and consequent well-being. Furthermore, they compile advantages to the patients’ treatment and highlight, mainly, the natural environments benefits, which is elucidated by the Biophilia theory. Through literature review and analysis of applied research in national and international hospitals, extracted from indexing databases of scientific production in the 2000-2020 timeframe, it was found that these areas [a] promote stimuli that enhance emotions and positive feelings; [b] act to restore stress and anxiety; [c] reduce pain, analgesic intake and length of stay; and [d] increase patient satisfaction. By sharing the results of this research, the objective is, in addition to stimulating future research on the organism behavior in the environments, to indicate perspectives for hospital ambiences.

summary Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS), which have emerged with mass customization in the industry, allow the tool or system parameters to be adjusted in a controlled manner to produce customized products. Although the reconfigurable manufacturing systems have been applied in building and construction for waste, time, and cost reduction in producing specific mold forms at a prototype level, their utilization in additive manufacturing (extrusion) has not been explored. This paper presents, initial steps of ongoing research on the development of reconfigurable tools and workflow by transforming the tool's rigid parts with controlled parametric movable parts. The clay extruder tool used in crafts is transformed into a reconfigurable extruder tool that allows making customized forms. In the experimental setup, die combinations and tool head rotations are examined with the proposed Extrusion-based Making Grammar (EbMG). Produced forms illustrate the variations of the design space in relation to the rule sets. Here, a rule-based approach is found to be efficient for controlling the making parameters. This study explored the potentials of transforming a rigid craft tool into a customizable tool that allow the generation of product variation. It presents the preliminary stage of transforming craft tools into further digital craft tools.
