summary As a traditional building material, clay has been used by humans for a long time. From early civilisations, to the modern dependence on new technologies, the craft of clay making is commonly linked with the use of moulds, handmade creations, ceramic extruders, etc. (Schmandt and Besserat, 1977). Clay in the form of bricks is one of the oldest building materials known (Fernandes et al, 2010). This research expands the possibilities offered by standardised bricks by testing types of clay, forms, shapes, porosity, and structural methods. The traditional way of working with clay relies on human craftsmanship and is based on the use of semi-solid clay (Fernandes et al., 2010). However, there is little research on the use of clay slurry. With the rise of 3D printing systems in recent years, research and development has been emerging on using clay as a 3D printing filament (Gürsoy, 2018). Researchers have discovered that in order for 3D-printed clay slurry to solidify quickly to support the weight of the added layers during printing, curing agents such as lime, coal ash, cement, etc. have to be added to the clay slurry. After adding these substances, clay is difficult to be reused and can have a negative effect on the environment (Chen et al., 2021). In this study, a unique method for manufacturing clay elements of intricate geometries is proposed with the help of an internal skeleton that can be continuously reused. The study introduces the process of applying clay on a special structure through spraying and showcases how this method creates various opportunities for customisation of production.

summary In this experimental research project we report on the manufacturing process of the first full-size 3D printed concrete structure in our country. The house was 3D printed by an ABB IRB 6700 robot whose range we made fit with the requirements for transportation size and also, its range determined the size and geometry of the house. During the transformation process from sketch to code we involved students to apply computational design methods. We designed the main load bearing structure which had to be thinnest and lightest possible together with its insulation features and printability. We were aware of the world-wide research in this field started by NASA centennial Challenge called 3D-printed-habitat [Roman,2020] as well as start-ups derived from this research [1,2,3,4]. During the project, we investigated the following matters: (1) the relationship between geometry of the wall in model and in practice (2), setting of the robot and the mixture; and (3) stress test of the wall. With the results of the test we aimed at contribution to standardisation of 3D printed structures in ISO/ASTM 52939:2021. The finalized structure, named "Prvok", was made to prove printability of the mixture and stability of the design.

summary This research presents a new direction for freeform structure assembly and fabrication through the collaboration of 3D printing technology and Japanese wood joining technology. Full-scale, self-build prototyping is demonstrated without glue or metal fittings. Rather than relying on digital fabrication machines to match the architectural scale, this study utilizes the Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) with desktop 3D printers, which is the most widespread and inexpensive printing technology. By incorporating the perspectives of wood joinery and compact 3D printers, this study promotes a drastic change in 3D printed architectural production from a massive structure-oriented system to a module-oriented system. The project demonstrates how artisanal knowledge integrates with 3D printing architectural production by reconfiguring joint geometry, parametric modeling, fabrication, and assembly processes. We discuss our research process and final achievements, and we provide new ideas for architectural production using digital fabrication.

summary With the increase in labor costs, more and more robot constructions appear in building construction and spatial structure fabrication. There are many robots working on large-scale objects. When the reach range of the robot cannot meet the requirements, so an external axis is needed. The external axis is usually a linear motion device, which can significantly increase the operating range of the robotic arm. In actual construction, it is also widely used. This article introduces a 3d printing coffee bar project. Because this project is of a large scale and needs to be printed at one time, the XYZ external axis was used in this project to complete the task. Inspired by this project, this article study several methods of optimizing the motion of external axes in large-scale construction. Finally, we chose to use the Fourier series as the most suitable method to optimize the printing path and programed this method as a component of FUROBOT for more convenient use. This article explains the principle of this method in detail. Finally, this article uses a 3D printing example to illustrate the precautions in actual use.

summary This paper presents a new representation mode during ideation based on the use of immersive 3D sketches and their digital fabrication. This work explores freehand immersive 3D sketches of design objects printed at real scale. Freehand 3D vectors were optimized thanks to parametric geometries generated for 3D printing. Our approach aims to take advantage of real-scale immersive 3D sketches, while enriching the 3D perception of proportions and shapes by 3D printing the physical sketches. 3D printing usually requires high-level of 3D modeling skills and this can be challenging during ideation. This technique will allow to reduce the steps going from: 2D sketches – 3D modeling – fabrication to 3D sketches – 3D physical sketches. The hybridization of immersive life-size sketching and 3D printed life-sized sketches, could positively impact ideation by allowing a better grasp of the 3D shapes’ scales and proportions.

summary This research explores the use of generative design and computational simulations in the exploration of urban compositions based on traditional urban forms from North Africa. Upon the examination of these urban settlements, we discuss the relationship between traditional urban form and generative urbanism theory. We investigate several factors that allow these self-generated urban tissues to be highly adaptive to social, spatial, and environmental change. Following this, we formulate guidelines to reinterpret some of the characteristics of these urban forms. Built on these features, the simulation seeks to explore the generation of abstract urban forms and their optimization. In this regard, this experiment utilizes 3D and parametric design tools (Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper) to define a generative urban simulation and optimization model. It explores the use of algorithmic design methodology in the definition and optimization of the generated urban form. For this purpose, grid-based operations with base modules are used in conjunction with introverted urban blocks. We employ evolutionary algorithms and Pareto front methodology to visualize and rank a multitude of optimized results that are evaluated using three different and conflicting design objectives: sun exposure, physical accessibility, and urban density. The results are ranked and analyzed by comparing the outcomes of these different objective functions. The result of this study shows that it is possible to allow a degree of diversification of a myriad of urban configurations with a generative form-finding algorithm while still maintaining a rather commendable adaptability to various design constraints in the case of high-density settings. In this research, it is anticipated that an algorithmic design model is a fitting contemporary solution that can simulate the philosophy of a design made without a designer and offer a wide range of objective-based spatial solutions. It sets the stage for a discussion about the relevance of reinterpreting traditional urban forms from north Africa by designing a generative model that allows for self-organization.

summary As Chinese cities entering a so-called organic renewal era, building projects runs with much more constraints from high-density and high-rise surroundings. Such a situation makes the technical review in any urban planning bureau time-consuming and error-prone, which conflicts with the developers profits and citizens rights. This study introduces a preliminary system being developed for the planning bureau of Huangpu District, Shanghai. It has covered 21 code items among 44 computational ones of the local planning codes last year, which automatically generates technical reviews upon developers submissions. Due to the feasible level of BIM application in domestic projects, a set of strategic approaches, such as the standardization of CAD drawings and the reconstruction of an internal building information model, are adopted rather than developing the system on any BIM platform directly. Two examples of technical reviews about distance-checking between buildings and length-checking of facades are demonstrated, in which officers reached confidential judgments in seconds rather than several days conventionally.

summary Joints design is an essential step in the process of designing timber structures. Complex architectural topologies require thorough planning and scheduling, as it is necessary to consider numerous factors such as structural stability, fabrication capabilities, and ease of assembly. This paper introduces a novel approach to timber joints design that embed both fabrication and assembly considerations within the same model to avoid mistakes that might cause delays and further expenses. We developed a workflow that allows us to identify the fundamental data to describe a given joint geometry, machine-independent fabrication procedures, and the assembly sequence. Based on this, we introduce a comprehensive descriptive language called Joint Descriptive Model (JDM) that leverages industry standards to convert a joint into a usable output for both fabrication and assembly simulations. Finally, we suggest a seed of a joint’s library with some common joints.

summary Building's spatial structure described in a BIM model can be used for retrieving the information required for determining the shortest path within the building. The matrix method and the visibility method are the two main ways of dividing space into prime factors. Both are widely used to find the shortest path. In order to compare the performance of both methods, several tests were carried out with various versions of the floorplan modification (room area, the surface of internal walls, distance between the entrance, and exit in a straight line and within the boundary marked by walls of the maze). The results revealed significant differences between the visibility graph and the matrix method.

summary Positioned at the intersection of the computational modes of design and production, this research explains the principles and applications of a novel fabrication-informed geometric system called nesting. Applying the nesting fabrication method, the authors reimage the construction of complex forms by proposing geometric arrangements that lessen material waste and reduce production time, transportation cost, and storage space requirements. Through this method, appearance and performance characteristics are contingent on fabrication constraints and material behavior. In this study, the focus is on developing design rules for this method and investigating the main parameters involved in dividing the global geometry of a complex volume into stackable components when the first component in the stack gives shape to the second. The authors introduce three different strategies for nesting fabrication: 2D, 2.5D, and 3D nesting. Which of these strategies can be used depends on the geometrical needs of the design and available tools and materials. Next, by revisiting different fabrication approaches, the authors introduce readers to the possibility of large-scale objects with considerable overhangs without the need for nearly any temporary support structures. After establishing a workflow starting with the identification of geometric rules of nesting and ending with fabrication limits, this work showcases the proposed workflow through a series of case studies, demonstrating the feasibility of the suggested method and its capacity to integrate production constraints into the design process. Traversing from pragmatic to geometrical concerns, the approach discussed here offers an integrated approach supporting functional, structural, and environmental matters important when turning material, technical, assembly, and transportation systems into geometric parameters.

summary This paper presents an approach for reusable formwork for thin-shell, double-sided highly detailed surfaces based on binder jet 3D printing technology. Using binder jetting for reusable formwork outperforms the milled and 3D printed thermoplastic formwork in terms of speed and cost of fabrication, precision, and structural strength against deformation. The research further investigated the synergy of binder jetting sandstone formwork with glass-fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) to fabricate lightweight, durable, and highly detailed facade elements.We could demonstrate the feasibility of this approach by fabricating a minimal surface structure assembled from 32 glass-fiber reinforced concrete elements, cast with 4 individual formwork elements, each of them reused 8 times. By showing that 3D printed (3DP) formwork cannot only be used once but also for small series production we increase the field of economic application of 3D printed formwork. The presented fabrication method of formwork based on additive manufacturing opens the door to more individualized, freeform architecture.

summary The additive manufacturing process is gaining momentum in the construction industry with the rapid progression of large-scale 3D printed technologies. An established method of increasing the structural performance of concrete is by wrapping it with Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP). This paper proposes a novel additive process to fabricate a FRP formwork by dynamic layer winding of the FRP fabric with epoxy resin paired with an industrial scale robotic arm. A range of prototypes were fabricated to explore and study the fabrication parameters. Based on the systemic exploration, the limitations, the scope, and the feasibility of the proposed additive manufacturing method is studied for large scale customisable structural formworks.

summary Concrete, a material widely used in the construction industry today for its low cost and considerable strength as a composite building material, allows designers to work with nearly any form imaginable; if the technology to build the formwork is possible. By combining two historic and widely used materials, clay and concrete, our proposed novel process, Cocoon, integrates robotic clay three-dimensional (3D) printing as the primary formwork and incrementally casting concrete into this formwork to fabricate nonstandard concrete elements. The incremental casting and printing process anchors the concrete and clay together, creating a symbiotic and harmonious relationship. The concrete’s fluidity takes shape from the 3D printed clay formwork, allowing the clay to gain structure from the concrete as it cures. As the clay loses moisture, the formwork begins to shrink, crack, and reveal the concrete below. This self-demolding process produces easily removable formwork that can then be recycled by adding water to rehydrate the clay creating a nearly zero-waste formwork. This technique outlines multiple novel design features for complex concrete structures, including extended height limit, integrated void space design, tolerable overhang, and practical solutions for clay deformation caused by the physical stress during the casting process. The novelty of the process created by 3D printing clay formwork using an industrial robotic arm allows for rapid and scalable production of nearly zero-waste customizable formwork. More significant research implications can impact the construction industry, integrating more sustainable ways to build, enabled by digital fabrication technologies.

summary In this paper we will demonstrate that a digital workflow and a living material such as mycelium, make the creation of smart structural designs possible. Ceramics industries are not as technically advanced in terms of digital fabrication, as the concrete or steel industries are. At the same time, bio-based materials that use growth as a manufacturing method, are often lacking in basic research. Our interdisciplinary research combines digital manufacturing - allowing a controlled material distribution, with the use of mycelial growth - enabling fibre connections on a microscopic scale. We developed a structure that uses material informed toolpaths for paste-based extrusion, which are built on the foundation of experiments that compare material properties and observations of growth. In this manner the tensile strength of 3D printed unfired clay elements was increased by using mycelium as an intelligently oriented fibre reinforcement. Assembling clay-mycelium composites in a living state allows force-transmitting connections within the structure. The composite named 'MyCera' has exhibited structural properties that open up the possibility of its implementation in the building industry. In this context it allows the design and efficient manufacturing of lightweight ceramic constructions customized to this composite, which would not have been possible using conventional ceramics fabrication methods.

summary In redevelopment projects in mature cities, it is important to visualize the future landscape. Diminished reality (DR) based methods have been proposed to represent the future landscape after the structures are removed. However, two issues remain to be addressed in previous studies. (1) the user needs to prepare 3D models of the structure to be removed and the background structure to be rendered after removal as preprocessing, and (2) the user needs to specify the structure to be removed in advance. In this study, we propose a DR method that detects the objects to be removed using semantic segmentation and completes the removal area using generative adversarial networks. With this method, virtual removal can be performed without preparing 3D models in advance and without specifying the removal target in advance. A prototype system was used for verification, and it was confirmed that the method can represent the future landscape after removal and can run at an average speed of about 8.75 fps.

summary In this paper, we present a workflow developed for designing with and scaling-up new materials in architecture through an iterative cycle of materialization and testing. The framework establishes a connection between design requirements and form, taking advantage of different scales in new materials known as micro, meso, and macroscale in the process of design/manufacture. Different scales when dealing with material systems-especially in those that possess some level of uncertainty in their behavior from the formation process-make it challenging to deal with the different material variables controlled at each scale. This paper presents a brief review of existing design workflows centered on material properties. We then discuss case studies and argue for a multi-scale approach for design. Finally, we present the workflow. By implementing the workflow on two case studies, we answer how we can include material scales and their embedded properties as the central part of the design/manufacture process to aid in implementing new materials in architecture. The case studies are a responsive skin system and a free-standing tensile structure incorporating 3D printed wood filament and knitted yarn as the primary material.

summary This paper describes the Urban Structure Synthesizer (USS), a research prototype based on deep learning that generates diagrams of morphologically consistent urban fabrics from context-rich urban datasets. This work is part of a larger research on computational analysis of the relationship between urban context and morphology. USS relies on a data collection method that extracts GIS data and converts it to diagrams with context information (Rhee et al., 2019). The resulting dataset with context-rich diagrams is used to train a Wasserstein GAN (WGAN) model, which learns how to synthesize novel urban fabric diagrams with the morphological and contextual qualities present in the dataset. The model is also trained with a random vector in the input, which is later used to enable parametric control and variation for the urban fabric diagram. Finally, the resulting diagrams are translated to 3D geometric entities using computer vision techniques and geometric modeling. The diagrams generated by USS suggest that a learning-based method can be an alternative to methods that rely on experts to build rule sets or parametric models to grasp the morphological qualities of the urban fabric.

summary This paper proposes the development of a methodology for the digital generation of valid 3D-printed houses designs and fabrication programming, in the search for an emerging architectural language of this technology. The aim is to develop a transparent, generic and variable modeling and management process, based on some parametric patterns for 3D printing, architectural and construction design knowledge. That serves as an outline or insight of what can be designing architectural 3d-printed forms in the Construction 4.0 era. Preliminary results, discussion and further work are presented.

summary Gridshells are highly efficient, lightweight structures which can span long distances with minimal use of material (Vassallo & Malek 2017). One of the most promising and novel categories of gridshells are bending-active (elastic) systems (Lienhard & Gengnagel 2018), which are composed of flexible members (Kuijenhoven & Hoogenboom 2012). Timber elastic gridshells can be site-sprung or sequentially erected (geodesic). While a lot of research focus is on the site-sprung ones, the methods for design of sequentially-erected geodesic gridshells remained underdeveloped (Cichocka 2020). The main objective of the paper is to introduce a method of generating regular geodesic grid patterns on free-form surfaces and to examine its applicability to design structurally feasible geodesic gridshells. We adopted differential geometry methods of generating regular bidirectional geodesic grids on free-form surfaces. Then, we compared the structural performance of the regular and the irregular grids of the same density on three free-form surfaces. The proposed method successfully produces the regular geodesic grid patterns on the free-form surfaces with varying curvature-richness. Our analysis shows that gridshells with regular grid configurations perform structurally better than those with irregular patterns. We conclude that the presented method can be readily used and can expand possibilities of application of geodesic gridshells.

title University Campus Walkability Index Supported by Digital Databases

summary Studies on the university campus commonly consider its spatial particularities in comparison to the city. However, the university debate about mobility also addresses urban-related challenges, like those posed by the dependence on vehicles and incentives for active mobility. Considering internal mobility, this work explores Wi-Fi connections from a Brazilian public university to trace community trajectories and population density on campus. We adopted objective data from the built environment for the application of a walkability index. The procedures were performed using GIS and the results shared for visualization in the Kepler.gl application. The results include walkability indices for different campus sectors. The discussion focuses on the potential use of the index in promoting a more integrated and less automobile-dependent campus.
