summary This study presents the comparative analysis of two undergraduate courses which focus on introducing digital fabrication to design students. The duration of the compared courses are 5 weeks and 7 weeks respectively. The study employs action research methodology, while the theoretical lectures, weekly exercises, materials, fabrication tools and techniques, and students' outcomes were used as data sources. Particularly the material-based pedagogy and tool-based pedagogy of the compared courses are evaluated in relation with the tools, materials and techniques. The outcomes of the study is expected to provide insights for instructors and design students in the context of digital craft.

summary This paper addresses our current environmental and political climate directly, disseminating work from a research-based, upper-level architecture studio located at the border of Mexico and the United States. Dynamic digital tools and methods were developed to connect multiple scales of spatialized data. Additional field tools, including electromagnetic field (EMF) meters, environmental sensors, and micro-photography, enabled real-time dynamics to be combined with photogrammetry, satellite and GIS data. The selected outcomes utilize the methodological framework in different ways. Three presiding significant outcomes demonstrated from this work include: 1) micro-macro scale inquiry through spatio-temporal data collection and fieldwork; 2) parametric digital tools for emergent design optimization linking natural and artificial systems; and 3) human-machine-nature interactions for cultural awareness, participation, and activism. Collectively, these three functions of the methodology shift practice towards an alter-disciplinary logic to enable adaptive design outcomes that are responsive to a range of issues presented through site-specific climate change dynamics.

summary In recent years, academia has deviated from the lecture-based model to a hybridized system of instruction and experiential learning. Experiential learning aids students in understanding collaborative processes in architectural praxis and exposes them to engaging learning opportunities, a critical component of architectural studio education (Nijholt et al. 2013). During the COVID-19 outbreak, students are barred from accessing on-campus facilities. This causes a redevelopment of curricular delivery and disrupts experiential learning which heavily relies on in-person interaction. It is imperative for instructors to retain experiential learning in the transition to virtual instruction. This paper explores experiential learning within virtual platforms for instruction. Through outlining the implementation of technologies, capitalizing on connectivity, and maximizing opportunity for digital problem solving, the authors posit a framework that other educators may adopt. The paper concludes with a case study of a virtual design-build project, and the various techniques implemented in retaining experiential learning during the pandemic.

summary This paper presents a discussion about design pedagogy strategies focused on students’ processes rather than on their architectural objects. The hypothesis here is that critical and creative autonomy of students can be developed by the teaching of design thinking simultaneously with operative digital tools within design disciplines. An experiment was made in an introductory design discipline in a private Brazilian Architecture School and results show how students’ skills and knowledge about design grow faster when a digital creative culture is fostered within the design studio.

summary Human imagination has played with the idea of an alternative technological world for years. From dystopian proposals like Neuromancer or The Matrix to more positive views like the recent Upload series, the exploration of the friction between the digital world and the physical world has entertained the imagination of our society for decades. Outside the fictional environments, the omnipresence of the internet and the development of “the cloud” are showing that the virtual world is possible and that the idea of a Metaverse is no longer part of science fiction but a very real future for human relations (Winters 2021). In line with the idea of the Metaverse, the intersection of the virtual and the physical world is being explored through the idea of Extended Realities. Technology is allowing humans to enhance their capabilities more than ever, and in fact, it has been proposed that we are entering the Augmented era (King 2014). This paper explores the opportunities and possible challenges that “Extended Architecture” has by analyzing a research project based on augmented reality as the media to explore these ideas. This project will propose a speculative approach to how the fact that in the recent future, everyone will have access to an AR device will change the way we perceive and understand our architectural environment.

title The question of access: Toward an equitable future of computational design

summary Digital fabrication and its cultivated spaces promise to break disciplinary boundaries and enable access to its technologies and computation for the broader public. This paper examines the trope of “access” in digital fabrication, design, and craft, and illustrates how it unfolds in these spaces and practices. An equitable future is one that builds on and creates space for multiple bodies, knowledges, and skills; allows perceptual interaction and corporeal engagement with people, materials, and tools; and employs technologies accessible to broad groups of society. By conducting comparative and transnational ethnographic studies at digital fabrication and crafting sites, and performing craft-centered computational design studies, we offer a critical description of what access looks like in an equitable future that includes digital fabrication. The study highlights the need to examine universal conceptions and study how they are operationalized in broader narratives and design pedagogy traditions.

summary Immersive Virtual Reality (iVR) systems hold a promise to affect design behavior by allowing users to experience presence, as they are embodied in the digital display. However, the lack of research articulating how embodiment enabling media change design behavior limits integrating iVR systems in design pedagogy with a well-defined framework. This paper presents the preliminary results from a case study of a work in progress comparing the communication patterns of critique sessions in an architecture studio in two kinds of media: iVR and non-immersive desk-crits. We employed protocol analysis methods to track the distribution of conversational turns and the first occurrence of design issues emerging over the different media. Results show that compared to non-immersive critiques, the iVR had a lower number of conversational turns and an increase in the first occurrence generated by students, indicating support in a learner-centered activity. Elucidating the effect of the communication medium on design behavior provides an empirical foundation for its inclusion in a design theory that encapsulates embodied cognition.

Computational developments in fields such as machine learning and data mining enable the creation of learning networks that involve architects alongside algorithms in developing new understanding. Such networks are increasingly able to observe current social conditions, plan, decide, act on changing scenarios, learn from the consequences of their actions, and recognize patterns out of complex activity networks. While digital technologies have already enabled architecture to transcend static physical boxes, new challenges of the present and visions for the future continue to call for both innovative responses integrating emerging technologies into experimental architectural practice and their critical reflection. In this process, the capability of adapting to complex social and environmental challenges through learning, prototyping and verifying solution proposals in the context of rapidly shifting realities has become a core challenge to the architecture discipline. Supported by advancing technologies, architects and researchers are creating new frameworks for digital workflows that engage with new challenges in a variety of ways. Learning networks that recognize patterns from massive data, rapid prototyping systems that flexibly iterate innovative physical solutions, and adaptive design methods all contribute to a flexible and networked digital architecture that is able to learn from both past and present to evolve towards a promising vision of the future.

summary Most approaches developed to teach parametric design principles in architectural education have focused on universal strategies that often result in the fixation of students towards perceiving parametric design as standard blindly followed scripts and procedures, thus defying the purpose of the bottom-up framework of form finding. Material-based computation has been recently introduced in computational design, where parameters and rules related to material properties are integrated into algorithmic thinking. In this paper, we discuss the process and outcomes of a computational design course focused on the interplay between the physical and the digital. Two phases of physical/digital exploration are discussed: (1) physical exploration with different materials and fabrication techniques to arrive at the design logic of a prototype panel module, and (2) deducing and developing an understanding of rules and parameters, based on the interplay of materials, and deriving strategies for pattern propagation of the panel on a façade composition using variation and complexity. The process and outcomes confirmed the initial hypothesis, where the more explicit the material exploration and identification of physical rules and relationships, the more nuanced the parametrically driven process, where students expressed a clear goal oriented generative logic, in addition to utilizing parametric design to inform form finding as a bottom-up approach.

summary Architecture Digital Platforms are capable of creating buildings that provide comfort that meets human thermal, acoustic and visual needs. However, some building technologies can choose the physical energy arena of the building on the expense of the mentioned aspects of human comfort. Nevertheless, aspects like emotional and psychological human comfort exist in limited studies practiced in interior design, or in active design of public spaces and on the landscape and urban scale. It is not mandatory in building design: How different spaces affect humans and what makes an environment stressful or not. Study gathers literature theoretically and categorizes it per topic: 1) Affective computing Introduction and uses, 2) Human responses to different stimulus and environments, 3) Factors that affect humans, 4) Technologies like brain imaging and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) that are used to measure human anxiety levels, as well as blood pressure and other indications on the person’s well-being, and some 5) Case Studies. Affective computing can be an addition to different pre- design analysis made to a project. Different areas of comfort like space dimensions, height, colour and shape can be the start of coding “Human Comfort” analysis software. Study has been restricted to previous research, and can be expanded further to experimentation. Future work aims to code it into Building Information Modelling Software.

summary Low-poly modeling as an emerging field in visual arts, product design and architecture has an essential effect both on the designer's and the viewer/user's experience. It has an advanced abstraction ability over the reconfiguration of form. This paper examines the visual features of low-poly form in terms of the computability of its aesthetics. A visual feature classification is made by referencing George David Birkhoff's aesthetic measure theory based on the complexity and order relationship. Topo[i]wall installation has been examined as a case study during the analysis. The relationship between form, computation, aesthetics and human-computer interaction are elaborated according to the results. It has been observed that low poly modeling offers a variation set in terms of compositional features, which are proportion, balance, vertical and horizontal network system while protecting its unity through the analysis of the generated computational model.

summary Re-coding post-war Syria is an ongoing research and data platform, focused on innovation and collecting comprehensive, infrastructural and socioeconomic analytics, synchronization data, by using AI driven to give a more transparent image of innovating a new methodology to regenerate the future of post-war smart cities into advanced and sustainable urban environments in a smarter way (Fig. 1). The pressure to achieve a rapid Post-war smart city without clear strategy and comprehensive analysis of all aspects will cause a particularly catastrophic collapse in the interconnected social structure, services, education and health care system, leaving a long-term impact on the society. This paper presents the current status of the Research & Documentation methodology in the Data Collection phase by the objective investigations conducted through a series of local and international workshops species developed in this research called “Re-Coding“, offering consequent direct ground surveys, statistics and documentation study of the targeted areas, merging professionalism and youth power with local community to detect an open source data used as a tool to re-generate a precarious area towards a new methodology.

summary Architectural design is an intellectual activity where the architect moves from the abstract to the real. In this process, the abstract represents the logical reasoning of how architectural form is configured or structured, while the real refers to the final physical form. Diagrams become an integral part of the conceptual design stage because they mediate between those two realms. Building Information Modeling (BIM) can reallocate the effort and time to emphasize conceptual design. However, many consider BIM a professionally-oriented tool that is less suitable for the early design stages. This research suggests that architectural design reasoning can be achieved using constraint-based parametric diagrams to aid conceptual design in BIM. The study examines several techniques and constructs a framework to use diagrams in the early design stages. This framework has been investigated through Villa Stein and Citrohan House by Le Corbusier. This study addresses two roles of diagrams: the generative role to create various design solutions and the analytical one to conduct an early performance study of the building. Our research contributes to the discussion on the ways designers can use digital diagrams to support the architectural design process.

summary This paper addresses the importance and development of cultural transformations involving the design process in architecture and the advent of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in civil construction activities and how its implementation in a coordinated, collaborative and interoperable way contributes to a diagnosis of Clash Detection between diferentes design projects, before building construction, saving excessive costs and rework. Taking as its main reference the BIM Maturity Matrix of Succar (2009), the proposed BIM Project Integration Maturity Matrix contributes to the awareness of bringing designers and builders closer to design activities, to encourage the integration of design processes involving the building, to consolidate an environment of ease of communication between participants, the organization of documentation and, above all, prioritize the compatibility between projects to avoid conflicts, excess costs and rework, resulting in a higher quality of the final project.

summary The present research stems from a critical reflection about the environmental adaptability of existing building envelopes. The main goal is to explore how to balance environmental optimization with contextual constraints, using modularity, flexibility and mass customization as guiding principles. An application study was carried out with the development of a second skin proposal aligned with the use and context of the building under study. For this purpose, simulations that assess environmental conditions were developed within a visual programming tool, not only feeding the design process with essential information, but also providing a flexible creative process. Results show that such simulations allow the designer to interpret these studies more accurately, reducing the iterative guesswork, since in this workflow it is possible to transform these outputs into proposition parameters for new designs or interventions.

summary The academy aims to understand and insert digital technologies in the collaborative, interdisciplinary and innovative process. Thus, the process of this project aims to develop an itinerant space that enables integration between academics and the community, associated with digital technologies, making it essential as a precursor of knowledge, innovation and social well-being. Based on concepts from Smart City and Smart Campus, as it addresses a phenomenon of development intrinsic to technological processes in pursuit of environmental quality, it appropriates of digital manufacturing tools as a programmatic production model. Inspired by the generation of physical objects from digital models along the lines of Wikihouse, a modular architectural executive method was developed as an alternative for flexibility and movement. At the end of the process, there is the conception of the TEC-House, idealized as an itinerant modular space, based on anthropometric parameters where function determines the way they integrate, constituting modifying places.

We develop a speculative vision/plan for the Biscayne Bay estuary that envisions infrastructures that grow by themselves using synthetic biology. In this paper, we elaborate on how Synthetic Biology has evolved to become the fastest growing technology in human history, its potential in the development of large-scale infrastructures, and its impact on the future imaginations of Architecture.

summary Modern CNC weft knitting machines are capable to produce textiles with complex non-uniform structures and shapes in a single operation with minimum human intervention. The type of knit structure and the settings of the knitting machine significantly influence the fabric characteristics and its role in architectural comfort. However, there is still no open-access tool for fast and efficient analysis of textiles with consideration of their knit structure, especially if they are knitted non-uniformly. Moreover, the existing methodologies of digital modeling of the knit structure are not linked to the actual production of textiles on flat-bed knitting machines. This paper presents a tool that "reads" a bitmap image that can be as well imported into a knitting machine software and generates a yarn-level geometry of the knitted textiles, that can be further integrated into the behavior analysis software within the rhino-grasshopper environment. This methodology helps to preview and analyze knitted textiles before production and can help to optimize the programming of bespoke knitted textiles for large-scale architectural applications.

summary Close-range photogrammetry, due to the possibilities offered by the technological evolution of acquisition tools and, above all, the relative original challenges posed to surveyors and the theory of measurements, deserve constant critical attention. The new opportunities to detect and represent reality are mostly focused on historical architecture, referring to consequent orders of magnitude and restitution scales. On the other hand, the formalization of relevant practices for very small objects is not frequently addressed. In recent tests carried out using two Dino-Lite handheld digital microscope models, polarized light digital microscopes generally used in medical and industrial fields, we proved the potential of using these imaging systems also for Cultural Heritage documentation, highlighting, however, some issues related to the depth of field and the consequent acquisition geometry. Therefore, this study aims to solve these problems, increasing the performance of microscopic photogrammetry by optimizing the acquisition procedures with the design of custom accessories for micro-photogrammetry (e.g. a calibrated plate). These developments will be carried out as part of a technology transfer agreement with the Dino-Lite company pointed to codify a protocol for high accuracy photogrammetric documentation of small artefacts.
