summary In the field of urban architecture and design, augmented reality (AR)-based landscape visualization is useful for building consensus among stakeholders at the design stage. An integrated AR and drone method can visualize future and past landscapes from an aerial perspective but has to address the problem of occlusion, where a 3D virtual model is displayed in front of the real-world objects. In this study, we propose an AR and drone integrated landscape visualization method to handle occlusion by linking the drone's location information in the real world and the camera in the virtual world. The method uses a 3D model of an existing building, which is part of the city model, to represent the 3D model of the design target as if the target were behind the existing building in the real world. Users can use the perspective of the drone, which flies along a set route, to examine the future landscape with high accuracy, as visualized using AR with occlusion handling.

summary Rapidly evolving technologies are increasingly shaping our societies as well as our understanding of the discipline of architecture. Computational developments in fields such as machine learning and data mining enable the creation of learning networks that involve architects alongside algorithms in developing new understanding. Such networks are increasingly able to observe current social conditions, plan, decide, act on changing scenarios, learn from the consequences of their actions, and recognize patterns out of complex activity networks. While digital technologies have already enabled architecture to transcend static physical boxes, new challenges of the present and visions for the future continue to call for both innovative responses integrating emerging technologies into experimental architectural practice and their critical reflection. In this process, the capability of adapting to complex social and environmental challenges through learning, prototyping and verifying solution proposals in the context of rapidly shifting realities has become a core challenge to the architecture discipline. Supported by advancing technologies, architects and researchers are creating new frameworks for digital workflows that engage with new challenges in a variety of ways. Learning networks that recognize patterns from massive data, rapid prototyping systems that flexibly iterate innovative physical solutions, and adaptive design methods all contribute to a flexible and networked digital architecture that is able to learn from both past and present to evolve towards a promising vision of the future.

summary Architecture Digital Platforms are capable of creating buildings that provide comfort that meets human thermal, acoustic and visual needs. However, some building technologies can choose the physical energy arena of the building on the expense of the mentioned aspects of human comfort. Nevertheless, aspects like emotional and psychological human comfort exist in limited studies practiced in interior design, or in active design of public spaces and on the landscape and urban scale. It is not mandatory in building design: How different spaces affect humans and what makes an environment stressful or not. Study gathers literature theoretically and categorizes it per topic: 1) Affective computing Introduction and uses, 2) Human responses to different stimulus and environments, 3) Factors that affect humans, 4) Technologies like brain imaging and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) that are used to measure human anxiety levels, as well as blood pressure and other indications on the person’s well-being, and some 5) Case Studies. Affective computing can be an addition to different pre- design analysis made to a project. Different areas of comfort like space dimensions, height, colour and shape can be the start of coding “Human Comfort” analysis software. Study has been restricted to previous research, and can be expanded further to experimentation. Future work aims to code it into Building Information Modelling Software.

summary Re-coding post-war Syria is an ongoing research and data platform, focused on innovation and collecting comprehensive, infrastructural and socioeconomic analytics, synchronization data, by using AI driven to give a more transparent image of innovating a new methodology to regenerate the future of post-war smart cities into advanced and sustainable urban environments in a smarter way (Fig. 1). The pressure to achieve a rapid Post-war smart city without clear strategy and comprehensive analysis of all aspects will cause a particularly catastrophic collapse in the interconnected social structure, services, education and health care system, leaving a long-term impact on the society. This paper presents the current status of the Research & Documentation methodology in the Data Collection phase by the objective investigations conducted through a series of local and international workshops species developed in this research called “Re-Coding“, offering consequent direct ground surveys, statistics and documentation study of the targeted areas, merging professionalism and youth power with local community to detect an open source data used as a tool to re-generate a precarious area towards a new methodology.

summary This project attempts to reimagine Miami and coastal communities with the advent of climate change and the rise of biotechnology. We develop a speculative vision/plan for the Biscayne Bay estuary that envisions infrastructures that grow by themselves using synthetic biology. In this paper, we elaborate on how Synthetic Biology has evolved to become the fastest growing technology in human history, its potential in the development of large-scale infrastructures, and its impact on the future imaginations of Architecture.

summary This paper presents findings of a survey conducted to assess students’ experiences within the online instruction stage of their architectural education during the lockdown period caused by the COVID-19 pandemic between March and June 2020. The study was conducted in two departments of architecture in both Cairo branches of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT), Egypt, with special focus on courses involving a CAAD component. The objective of this exploratory study was to understand students’ learning experiences within the online period, and to investigate challenges facing architectural education. A mixed methods study was used, where a questionnaire-based survey was developed to gather qualitative and quantitative data based on the opinions of a sample of students from both departments. Findings focus on the qualitative component to describe students’ experiences, with quantitative data used for triangulation purposes. Results underline students’ positive learning experiences and challenges faced. Insights regarding digital tool preferences were also revealed. Findings are not only significant in understanding an important event that caused remote architectural education in Egypt but may also serve as an important stepping-stone towards the future of design education in light of newly-introduced disruptive online learning technologies made necessary in response to lockdowns worldwide

summary The article presents and discusses the experience, methodology and results, of a design workshop held at the UNLaM. The proposal found its starting point in the registration of a current situation in which the architectural project is crossed by issues alien to a discipline whose principles are deeply speculative. Retrograde problems product of a conservative historical revival and emerging positions of political correctness trends distorting disciplinary purposes in proposals that have consolidated a desolate, unimaginative and banal disciplinary panorama. The KPY 1139 workshop proposed to return to the sources of a joyfully projective discipline, investigating the bases of the most eloquent projective narrative: science fiction cinema.

summary Current approaches to smart cities have focused on implementing technologies to harvest and analyse data through sensors and artificial intelligence to improve urban performance from the top-down. However, cities are complex systems of interconnected layers that change at different speeds. More persistent layers, like networks and occupation, must have smartness embedded in them through smarter design processes. In recent years, there has been an increase in digital tools for urban design, applying computational design methods and data analytics strategies, enabling collaborative and evidence-based approaches that support sustainable urban design. A critical evaluation of their potential to inform design is necessary to aid practitioners to choose and adopt these novel strategies and tools in practice. This paper presents a critical review of selected data-driven design cloud platforms, focusing on data-driven urban design approaches that can enable the use of ICTs to steer cities into a smarter future from the bottom-up.

summary At the beginning of the twenty-first century, a discipline at the intersection of digital art and science explores how natural and artificial species are affected, coexist, and feed back to humans based on multi-scalar hybrid models. They embody types of surveillance entities or non-human custodians, and serve as inspiration for another generation of designs produced ten years later, the case studies that are presented here. This paper explains the design and parametric fundamentals of a digital architecture installation at the University of Alicante (Spain 2021) using CNC models and the TouchDesigner programming environment. The installation contains a clan of technological-virtual hybrid species, non-human custodians, which: (a) strengthen the Proposal’s discourse on the recognition of legal identity of the Mar Menor lagoon (Southeast Spain); (b) incorporate reactive designs; (c) help raise awareness of the effect of human actions on the lagoon’s ecology and nearby streams. The viewpoint is not anthropocentric, because it adopts the perspective of the foraging fish species or the oxygen-seeking algae species, among others, in order to reveal the deterioration processes. In most cases, the result is a sort of synaesthetic conversation that interweaves light, sound, movement and data.

summary The Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) launched the Cultural History Project in 2021 to mark the 40th anniversary of the organization and the 41st anniversary of the conference. This initiative has provided an opportunity to reflect upon the legacy and trends of the organization as a method for considering its future. The Cultural History Project began with an open-access digital archive of the organization’s Proceedings and Quarterlies and evolved into a larger discourse about how the ACADIA community values and promotes forms of computational knowledge. A summary essay included in the 2021 Proceedings (Image 2) reflects on what the archive reveals about ACADIA and its “habits”. Habits are settled tendencies or practices, especially ones that are difficult to relinquish. The term implies repetition, perhaps unconscious, that becomes normalized through its reiteration. The 2023 ACADIA Conference, “Habits of the Anthropocene,” marks the 43rd anniversary of the conference and the 42nd anniversary of ACADIA as an organization. What are the computational habits we need to identify, recall, question, break, and replace with new (or perhaps old) ways of thinking and working?

summary Plenty of challenges all over the world are affecting the urban development of spaces in the cities, especially those of heritage sites; these urban spaces provide various ambiances that appeal to the senses. Although surrounded open spaces in heritage sites are full of rich, deep knowledge that plays an active role in the community perceptions, it has been recently neglected. A contribution is paid to the combination of digital technologies to help in preserving those spaces. Its integrated use could exponentially increase the effectiveness of conservation strategies of ancient buildings. GIS technology became a usual documentation tool for heritage managers, conservators, restorers, architects, archaeologists, painters, and all other categories of experts involved in cultural heritage activities. Consequently, the GIS has faced strong criticism as it is a tool for documentation without engaging in the public environment and the users’ needs; as a result, GIS cannot help in any enhancing process as it does not have any idea about the needs of the users. This paper analyses public uses efficiency in heritage public spaces in Cairene context using public participation geographic information system (PPGIS) methodology, as it gives attention to the term “user” to include the “public” incorporating the concept of “public participation” commonly used in planning. An online survey was set up, based on Google Maps, where respondents were asked to place and rate twenty-five items on an interactive map done by (ARCGIS 10.4). These items were based on the criteria of placemaking to make those spaces full of creative ambiance to be more attractive and useful to the communities. Finally, 200 valid surveys have been collected and mapped 1500 opinions have been mapped. The Results of this research show that PPGIS is an effective tool in measuring the efficiency of those heritage public spaces, which may be valuable for future planning.

summary A radical and rapid change in the world in the time of COVID19 pandemic powerfully brings the new era of digitalisation, and the 4th generation of the industrial revolution of Internet of Things (IoT) into practice. This raises many questions regarding the future smart city’s development in Arab region: Are our cities ready for such a rapid transformation towards this digital era? Do cities have adequate infrastructure for this? What are the guidelines required to achieve Smart City (SC) models in the Arab region? The aim of this research is to assess the status quo of the new developed cities in the Arab region as models of smart cities and indicate the factors that prove their maturity and readiness for the future digital transformation in the post-pandemic era. The research methodology is an application tool on two case studies, to prove that the features and characteristics of the existing on-ground initiatives and programmes support the digitalisation movement in these two cities. The research findings are a paving roadmap for the decision makers towards efficiently functioning models for sustainable SCs in the Arab region.

summary This paper will propose the integration of multi-view stereo and time of flight technologies and components. Through the spatial point cloud sensor, the changes of objects in the space are converted into digital point clouds, which are feedback on the virtual interface. To make the virtual and physical will continuously communicate and feedback in space, which we established a correction tool for the integration of virtual and physical. The agent-based sensor computing method combines the fabrication process of visual sensors and behavior, from virtual object control to fabrication machines. In this tool, users can explain the reasons for design decisions by visualizing process and process-related information. It allows virtual and physical previews and feedback in real time, and finds out the differences between the two and makes real-time corrections. Solved the correction problem of coexistence.

summary Rural revitalization is becoming a trend to improve the countrys economy. However, due to its remoteness and the infrastructure is not perfect, the village lacks the ability to attract young labor to some extent, reflecting the isolation of rural information. Thus, constructing rural information on digital infrastructure and breaking the barriers between urban and rural areas is based on a digital village and even intelligent village. This paper will discuss the potential of digitizing rural information, using digital information as a bridge between urban and rural areas, and connecting top-down and bottom-up stakeholders through a network or platform to promote rural cultural cognition and attract investment. The new form of rural development is a digital village that integrates rural information datas virtual interaction. The successful construction and promotion of digital villages will promote the revitalization of rural areas and data-driven development in the future information age.

summary “Unfolding” is a pavilion comprised of six lightweight structures designed for the London Design Biennale 2021. “UnFolding” examines the potential for using engineered timber with digital tools to produce flexible interiors. The pavilion is folded through kerfing methods into fractal-based structures. Extensive research, testing and sample fabrication to acquire optimal flexibility of different timber members through kerf patterns was accomplished for the project.

However, a few research explores the implication of swarm robotics for construction on the building or urban scale. This paper presents a novel swarm robotics construction method using mole-like digging technology to construct new architectural language using machine intelligence. The research discusses the role of swarm intelligence behaviours in design and synthesis such behaviour with machine logics. The paper addresses the conference theme through the speculative projection of future construction methodology and reflects on how automation can impact the future of construct and design.

summary Video games as a medium for entertainment have evolved overtime to become impactful and relevant in current culture, industry, and education. Although architecture is a cultural commodity that has been present since the dawn of civilization, within the span of less than 50 years, video games have had an incredible impact on architectural praxis. This paper posits a dyadic relationship between computer games and architecture, exploring the influences video game design attributes have had on nascent designers within the industry. This paper documents a case study examining architectural students' studio projects from Canada's largest architecture program, identifying the influences of video games that emerge within their designs. The paper discusses the effect video games have made on architectural education through passively impacting current pedagogical practice, design tendencies, and inevitably molding the architects of the future.

summary All factors of thermal comfort are invisible to humans and do not (yet) impact visual navigation in the built environment. Thermochromic materials change their colour relative to temperature. In architecture, their applications as responsive ornaments and as intelligent composite systems are discussed. Nonetheless, design research on their use together with computational design is scarce. This study investigates thermochromics concerning architectural surfaces. Design and material experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that thermochromic animation can be configured to visualise invisible parameters of thermal comfort. Scale prototypes were fabricated from different materials and coated with thermochromics. They varied in layer number and sub-coatings. The colour change was observed with several instruments. Heat transfer simulations of digital doppelgangers accompanied the physical experiments. The results suggest that this method can be used to configure thermochromic animation. This can be implemented into a procedural design model for porous and multi-layered thermochromic surfaces in the future. In this, digital simulation and material-based design are combined in a method that advances the use of thermochromic materials in the context of digital architectural design.

summary Our research team develops sustainable and inclusive typologies of micro-architecture. These micro-architectures, aided by cutting-edge technologies, give room to more inclusiveness and functional-ductility. We are convinced that nothing is static, there is not just a single possible future. Because of that, we generate real/virtual architectures that do not respond only to a single type of user, place or use. In this case, we introduce a typological model focused on health and wellness services, currently under development by parametric design. Located in the city of Córdoba, Argentina and placed near public parks (where many citizens practice sports and recreational outdoor activities)). We use energy-efficient local technology to power devices that adapt to local weather; moreover, the equipment provides performance data via audio, visual and tactile outputs, and in adjustable-position devices.
