summary The paper presents a blueprint of a simulation model and structures the processing of information that sensors in real life would provide to improve the efficiency of the cooling system and increase the thermal comfort of occupants in an outdoor environment. It outlines an evidence-based technique for evaluating perceived benefits that would arise from the introduction of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Computational Techniques (CTs) to evaporative cooling systems. The initial results indicate how data that would be gathered by sensory devices on occupancy and microclimatic conditions can be employed for the prediction and optimisation of the system to narrow the time gap between peak usage and nozzle activation to minimise resource use and maximise occupants' comfort. The larger objective of the study to help mitigate the effects of rising temperatures in urban environments and support the future use of outdoor public spaces. In the longer run, the study aims to explore the role of computationally enhanced microclimate control at a large scale, integral to innovative approaches to outdoor public spaces design.

summary As Hong Kong constructs increasingly high-density, high-rise public housing estates to increase land use efficiency, public in-between spaces are more constrained, which impacts the quality of social relations, movements and daily practices of residents (Shelton et al. 2011; Tang et al. 2019). Current planning practices are focused on the achievement of quantitative performance measures, rather than qualitative design considerations that support residents experiences and community interaction. This paper presents a new methodology that combines urban analysis and generative design for the regeneration of social housing estates, based on the spatial and social qualities of their in-between spaces.

summary In the twenty-four hour city era, how to optimize public spaces based on night behavior demands to promote full-time use has become a significant issue of urban design. Taking Shanghai North Bund as an example, the study collects data through site survey and questionnaire including environment elements, users attribute and behaviors. Next, the study sets up the simulation environment and translate the interaction of space and behavior into model language. Then, by setting up agent particles, running and fitting, the study obtains an ideal model. Finally, through sub-simulation and analysis, the study quantitatively explores the interaction mechanism between the physical environment and behavior from three levels of different spaces, different groups of people and different light conditions. The study finds that the differences of day and night behavior are produced under the combined effect of changes in attractiveness of environmental elements and changes in users demands and preferences. Compared with adults, the behaviors of elderly people and children show more obvious differences between day and night, and are more susceptible to space lighting, ground conditions and operating hours of facilities. Furthermore, the same kind of environment element will further affect users behavior in the night under different light conditions.

summary Embedded in Chinas urbanization process, the growth of gated residential estates has gradually induced severance of urban spaces, resulting in an underutilization of public amenities, a lack of walkable permeability, and congestion of traffic. Responding to these negative effects on urban development, the CPC has released a guideline in February 2016 to prohibit the development of any new closed residential areas in principle and to advocate ungated communities. In this paper, we utilized ABM simulation analysis to test different degrees of openness, the position of new entrances/openness, and pedestrian network typologies, aiming to explore feasible strategies to accommodate the new urban design agenda. A series of typical gated compounds in Beijing were selected for comparative case studies, conducted under different degrees of openness of each case and under diverse ungating modes between cases. On the basis of these analyses, we summarized a sequence of pedestrian-centric design strategies, seeking to increase the communities permeability and walkability by suggesting alternative internal and external road network design options for Beijing urban renewal. By integrating quantified simulation into the empirical method of urban design, our research can positively assist and inform urban practitioners to propose a more sustainable urbanity in the future.

summary Architecture Digital Platforms are capable of creating buildings that provide comfort that meets human thermal, acoustic and visual needs. However, some building technologies can choose the physical energy arena of the building on the expense of the mentioned aspects of human comfort. Nevertheless, aspects like emotional and psychological human comfort exist in limited studies practiced in interior design, or in active design of public spaces and on the landscape and urban scale. It is not mandatory in building design: How different spaces affect humans and what makes an environment stressful or not. Study gathers literature theoretically and categorizes it per topic: 1) Affective computing Introduction and uses, 2) Human responses to different stimulus and environments, 3) Factors that affect humans, 4) Technologies like brain imaging and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) that are used to measure human anxiety levels, as well as blood pressure and other indications on the person’s well-being, and some 5) Case Studies. Affective computing can be an addition to different pre- design analysis made to a project. Different areas of comfort like space dimensions, height, colour and shape can be the start of coding “Human Comfort” analysis software. Study has been restricted to previous research, and can be expanded further to experimentation. Future work aims to code it into Building Information Modelling Software.

summary The academy aims to understand and insert digital technologies in the collaborative, interdisciplinary and innovative process. Thus, the process of this project aims to develop an itinerant space that enables integration between academics and the community, associated with digital technologies, making it essential as a precursor of knowledge, innovation and social well-being. Based on concepts from Smart City and Smart Campus, as it addresses a phenomenon of development intrinsic to technological processes in pursuit of environmental quality, it appropriates of digital manufacturing tools as a programmatic production model. Inspired by the generation of physical objects from digital models along the lines of Wikihouse, a modular architectural executive method was developed as an alternative for flexibility and movement. At the end of the process, there is the conception of the TEC-House, idealized as an itinerant modular space, based on anthropometric parameters where function determines the way they integrate, constituting modifying places.

summary The paper describes a site-specific architectural soundscape installation created during a workshop in August 2021 at the Domaine de Boisbuchet in France. Far from urban noise, participants were attuned to natural, artificial, and human sound spheres, placing them in dialog and interweaving them through emulation, voice recording, and electro-acoustic devices including piezoceramic sensors, small motors, speakers, and embedded electronics. This expository paper includes qualitative descriptions of the spatial sound compositions, the technology that supported them, and the performance into which they were integrated. The results of this event were described by participants as trance-like, with phasing of multiple periodically organized emergent sound phenomena creating a deeply immersive distributed environment. In describing in detail, the tools, processes, outcomes and implications of the workshop, this paper offers an example of a design approach and model that can contribute immersive distributed architectural soundscape design through human and non-human sound interaction.

summary This paper focuses on the vibrancy of urban environments in the context of liveability. The objective is to explore the interrelationships of activity determinants what attracts visitors to support vibrancy decisions. The research questions how to uncover the relationships among vibrancy parameters and how to utilize the relation network for decision support. We utilize Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) for relational analysis and support with expert participation for an efficient decision-making. In this way, we expect to develop a causal by calibrating the data-driven BBN network. The results show that the user density has direct relationship with public open space, place rate, activity diversity, landmarks’ visitation rate cultural attributes, and accessibility; indirect relationship with time diversity, activity diversity and density. The results support the arguments on the importance of activity diversity in space and time, and intense urban pattern within the attractiveness public spaces for urbanity.

summary Cheap VR technologies have fed the online community a boasting dose of bored individuals that crave rapid, on demand, interactive entertainment, which is freely available on platforms such as VR CHAT. Up to today, VR platforms primarily exist as an extra layered multimedia entertainment platform with fairly shallow character development and scene use. Through the use of such platforms, a general assessment of key traits was formed based on the population status of the most visited worlds by the general public throughout a typical week. Six key traits were used as a baseline view in order to better understand the relations between each world and how the individual differences could have influenced the final result. the traits were design quality, complexity, lighting conditions, function, scale, and asset amount. The final results proved that pre-pandemic online populace chose worlds of fairly mid ranged traits almost all across the board, with the exception of lighting conditions and representative function. Gathered information will form a basic understanding of the desires of the virtual human counterpart, and from a clearer view of the trends in virtual architecture design for online living spaces.

summary Nowadays, numerous researchers emphasize the significance of the environmen-tal performance-driven generative methodology. However, due to the complex coupling mechanism of environmental regulation factors, the existing optimiza-tion engines and applications are time-consuming and cumbersome. In this re-search, we propose a novel design methodology based on Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). This paper is divided into 3 sections, including theoretical framework, design strategy, and practical application. It first introduces an over-view of basic principles, illustrating the potential advantages of DRL in perfor-mance data-driven design. Based on this, the paper proposes a DRL-based gener-ative method. We point out a more specific discussion about the application and workflow of core DRL elements in architectural design. Finally, taking a grid-form urban space composed by multitude high-rise building blocks as an exam-ple, we present a application through a DRL agent to conduct numerous active wind environmental performance-based design tests. It is an interactive and gen-erative design method, owning multiple advantages of timeliness, convenience, and intelligence.

summary Discussions about the participatory design for public space began to consolidate as a discipline in the 1960s, at the same time as civil rights debates and social justice were in focus. However, nowadays the reality of participation is permeated by a growing demand for online digital tools, which enable the citizen's interaction in the city design in a playful way. The aim of this article is to analyze a corpus of participatory digital interfaces aimed at the co-design of public spaces. The methodology is based on a comparative study of these platform's characteristics. The comparative analysis showed different design strategies and application characteristics of each one, and how they adapt to different participatory realities we can find.

summary Many island states, due to rising sea levels, have a problem with losing inhabitant homes. One of those countries is Kiribati island. Nowadays, this problem is solved by applying floating architecture, so life on the land is transferred to the water surface. Building settlements of this type is very complex. This paper proposes a unique concept for architectural and urban design using computational intelligence methods and the principles of regular tessellation. It is necessary to define the architectural program, ie. input data for the design process based on the general and special needs of users in terms of the functional organization of space. Each data will be represented by a module of unique dimensions, and the connections between the data by parameters, which result in a functional Bubble diagram of a modular floating house. By setting the requirements for the minimal perimeter and maximum area, the most optimal design of each of geometric shapes of regular tessellation will be chosen and evaluated by objective and subjective parameters of the design quality to find out which one is the most suitable for the modular floating house and then sustainable floating settlement.

summary Generative design offers the possibility to heuristically explore data-driven design iterations during the design process. This enables performance-informed feedback and the possibility for exploring viable options with stakeholders earlier in the design process. Since architectural design is a complex, nonlinear process that requires trade-offs and compromises among multiple requirements, many of which are in conflict with each other, a multi-objective solver provides a spectrum of possible solutions without converging on a single optimized individual. This enables a more informed design possibility space that is open to collaborative decision-making. This paper describes the development of a custom multi-objective generative design workflow to visualize families of possible future building typologies with a focus on the impact of site, form, envelope performance, and glazing. Three future design scenarios are generated for three urban U.S. locations projected to grow and where progressive environmental performance stretch codes have been adopted. Drivers such as plausible site, procurement, financing, value chain, and construction typology inform possibilities for built form, envelope technologies, and performance in relation to local codes, environment, and occupant health, are transformed into design inputs through urban, spatial and environmental simulation tools for a "building design generator," or a multi-objective optimizer tool that produces an array of possible building massing and schematic envelope design options. The paper concludes with pointing out some of the gaps in data of current evaluation tools, the need for interoperability across platforms, and this points to multiple trajectories of future research in this area.

summary Microclimate is one of the important components of the city environment. Previous researches on public space focused on the influence of spatial forms on user behavior, while ignoring the microclimate elements. This makes it difficult to be authentic of further recreational behavior simulation. The study puts forward a new path to study the influence of microclimate on recreational behavior. Taking the waterfront public space as an example, through the combination of field investigation and microclimate simulation, the influence of wind, temperature, and sunshine environment on residents recreational is explored, and the influence will be merged into the recreational behavior simulation. In the process of behavior simulation, the microclimate environment classification evaluation map is used. The study committed to achieve a higher degree of adaption between behavior simulation results and actual conditions. The study introduced microclimate influence factors on the basis of the influence of urban spatial form and service facility elements on behavior activities in the past. Based on that, we optimize the simulation method of urban public space recreational behavior, and improve the accuracy of space diagnosis through showing the impact of microclimate on the behavior of people in the space more objectively and intuitively.

summary The focus of the article is the impact of urban geometry and greenery on the surface temperature in a city and the Urban Heat Islands (UHI) effect. The research problem discussed in the article is to define optimal combination of such parameters as urban geometry, greenery and the LST to enhance the temperature comfort and reduce the UHI effect. The methodology combines CAD and GIS environments. Vector data of 1:10000 scale, from the National Database of Topographic Objects (BDOT10k) is used to analyse urban structure. GIS data include rasters derived from remote sensing: Land Surface Temperature (LST), Digital Surface Model (DSM) and Digital Terrain Model (DTM). The analysis covers areas in Szczecin and Gdynia, two mid-sized cities in Poland. The results indicate a more distinct dependence of LST on greenery parameters than on buildings. The main contribution of the article is the development of a uniform data grid based on CAD and GIS data, allowing for an objective analysis of the citys temperature comfort based on the parameters of buildings, greenery and LST.

summary Architecture has a substantial influence worldwide as it shapes our cities, and it is made to last. Urban areas are also responsible for 70% of the world’s carbon emissions. Consequently, architects are responsible for minimising the destructive effects of construction on the environment. How can biological intelligence be inserted in architecture as a possibility to increase environmental performance? Bio-design goes further than biology-inspired approaches. Biodesign refers to incorporating living organisms as an essential component of a system, changing the natural and built environment boundaries. It contains living and machine intelligence, whether embedded in the design process or in the building itself. This paper seeks to give an overview of bio-design and how it can be seen as a strategy of thinking of new research pathways.

summary This paper examines the relationship between designing interactive experiences based on new technologies and the process of architectural narration. It highlights the idea of rethinking a building with historical, architectural and functional value, as an experience and a journey. Referring to the historic building of the Municipal Market of Chania, Greece and using the conceptual idea of designing through narratives, it delineates the process of integrating new technologies into the process of designing a spatial and temporal experience. Exploiting Augmented Reality, we design an application implementing a digital layer with architectural and historical content, that is integrated into reality, improving the on-site visit, providing enhanced understanding of the building and introducing experiential visitor-building interaction. The application is available through mobile devices and the proposed system is evaluated by a group of users showing the positive effects of the use of interactive technologies in redesigning the experience of a space.

summary COVID-19 was a sanitary crisis of international impact. However, its effects weren’t experienced equally. In Fortaleza, epidemiological reports (2021;2022) point to different infection patterns between high Human Development Index (HDI) and low HDI neighborhoods, which surfaced the hypothesis that certain territories’ characteristics could correlate to COVID-19 data. This article describes a phase of a three-phase research, whose objective is to identify correlations between urban and demographic (UD) data to COVID-19 data. To this, a literature review was done to select seven UD variables and four COVID-19 ones, then, Spearman’s correlation was applied in four pandemic time frames (TF). Results show that literacy rates, monthly income and energy have either low or moderate positive correlations with contamination rates in most TF. However, they’ve shown low or moderate correlations with lethality rates in three TF. Population density showed low positive correlations to either lethality rates or total number of deaths in three TF.

summary The bulk of computational design strategies and research have been focused on issues related to architectural form and building systems. This is done by employing computational tools to optimise architectural forms, building performance and generally, improve quality of living. Many of these methodologies are based on the concept of form finding - varying geometric elements to generate and evaluate options to derive optimised solutions. However, beyond building designs, the concept of form finding can find its relevance in other design applications too such as engineering, landscape, and in our case, the design of ports, or more specifically harbour typology. In most building scenarios, the plot of land earmarked for development is typically selected beforehand, hence little exploration have been done to optimise land topology, when in fact the profile of land is the governing feature in most designs. For performance driven facilities like ports with high economic and political impact, there is value in optimizing topology to maximise throughput. Through the multi-disciplinary and collaborative effort of stakeholders and specialists, our project explored optimizing harbour topology via performance-based approach using computational design. The phenomenon, including impact and effects of trade-offs, are discussed and presented in this paper through a case study of a Greenfield port facility.

summary This paper presents a new additive manufacturing method for color grading of glass. Color-graded elements, ranging from product design to architectural scale, could filter light and view in a novel way through locally differentiated color and opacity, and produce color effects in space. Existing methods for manufacturing multi-colored glass are either not economic for building due to labor intensity, limited to surface applications or small scale objects made of resins or plastics. To allow for automated color grading of glass in two-and-a-half and three dimensions we propose a robotic multi-channel process. The multi-channel tool mounted on a Universal Robot consists of four compartments, containing red, yellow, blue and transparent glass granules. Colors can be mixed on the fly by implementing varying flow rate ratios along the print path. Loose granules are fused in a kiln at high temperature into color-graded glass elements. The goal of this research is to lay the basis for color-graded elements of larger size and volume with higher pattern differentiation for functional and aesthetic purposes.
