summary Computer vision (CV), artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) applications, which are among the rapidly emerging and growing technologies, have the potential to be effectively used in the fields of architecture and construction. These applications are used not only in the field of architectural design development and construction site tracking but also to analyze and predict the architectural properties of existing buildings and heritage classification. This paper aims to classify and analyze the façades of Bodrum houses by using deep learning models, comprehensive relational database (RDB), and artificial neural network based clustering methods. Through the use of the above-mentioned methods, we managed to cluster Bodrum houses' façade attributes in five groups and testing image classification models in three different classifiers.

summary Rapidly evolving technologies are increasingly shaping our societies as well as our understanding of the discipline of architecture. Computational developments in fields such as machine learning and data mining enable the creation of learning networks that involve architects alongside algorithms in developing new understanding. Such networks are increasingly able to observe current social conditions, plan, decide, act on changing scenarios, learn from the consequences of their actions, and recognize patterns out of complex activity networks. While digital technologies have already enabled architecture to transcend static physical boxes, new challenges of the present and visions for the future continue to call for both innovative responses integrating emerging technologies into experimental architectural practice and their critical reflection. In this process, the capability of adapting to complex social and environmental challenges through learning, prototyping and verifying solution proposals in the context of rapidly shifting realities has become a core challenge to the architecture discipline. Supported by advancing technologies, architects and researchers are creating new frameworks for digital workflows that engage with new challenges in a variety of ways. Learning networks that recognize patterns from massive data, rapid prototyping systems that flexibly iterate innovative physical solutions, and adaptive design methods all contribute to a flexible and networked digital architecture that is able to learn from both past and present to evolve towards a promising vision of the future.

summary This article addresses the issue of the relationship between digital games and the development of spatial thinking. The research question is: how can digital games be used to contribute to the development of geometric and spatial skills and competencies, extremely necessary for contemporary architects and urban planners? The main objective is to highlight digital games as a possible and emerging educational resource in the era of digital culture. From a methodological point of view, the article is the result of qualitative and exploratory research, both bibliographical and empirical. The results presented, which are the result of a didactic experiment carried out with the game Minecraft, point to the adoption of digital games as powerful playful didactic tools capable of contributing to the exercise and development of spatial vision and geometric thinking in Architecture and Urbanism.

summary This article deals with the design of structures with the quality of self-organization, applying emergency phenomena in particle aggregation, where a transformation of energy takes place towards structures and states of great complexity from rules of low level of sophistication, when there is an exchange of matter and energy with the outside, and are far from equilibrium. This I+D+i design project focuses on the scientific method, which means observing the phenomenon to answer: What training principles attributable to self-organization underlie the studied phenomenon? and, thus, being able to hypothesize or simulate a model from a Grasshopper environment fed with oversampling methods through Machine Learnig techniques, which allows us to question: How to apply the principles of formation resulting from the emergency phenomenon studied, to the design of self-organized structures? The results conclude that the quality of self-organization of these emerging structural systems is directly proportional to the similarity between their parts, their nesting capacity, the energy levels with which they interact, and their environment, which allows progress in research at scales and open up new future design and manufacturing possibilities.

summary In this study, we introduce a newly developed method called Deep-Performance, to enable automatic environmental performance simulation prediction without the need to perform simulations, by integrating deep learning strategies. The aim is to train neural networks on datasets with thousands of building design samples and their corresponding performance simulation. The trained model would offer performance prediction for design options emerging in generative protocols. The research is a work-in-progress within a broader project aimed at automating buildings environmental performance evaluations of daylight analysis and energy simulation, using deep learning (DL) models. This paper focuses on the implementation of a supervised DL method for automating the retrieval of daylight analysis metrics, targeting successful daylight design and higher building enclosure efficiency. We have further improved a Pix2Pix model trained on 5 different datasets, each containing 6000 paired images of architectural floor plans and their daylight simulation metrics. In the inference phase, the model was able to accurately predict the daylight simulation for unseen sets of floor plans. For validation, two quantitative assessment metrics were followed to assess the predicted daylight performance against the daylight performance simulation. Both assessment metrics showed high accuracy levels.

summary This paper exploits passive responsive actuators as a passive approach for adaptive façades. The study encodes the embedded hygroscopic parameters of wood through 4D printing of laminated wooden composites as a responsive wooden actuator. Several experiments focus on controlling the printed hygroscopic parameters based on the effect of 3D printing patterns and infill height on the wooden angle of curvature. We present a set of controlled printed hygroscopic parameters that stretch the limits in controlling the response of wood to humidity instead of the typical natural properties of wood. The results show a passive programmed self-actuated mechanism that can enhance responsive façade design with zero energy consumption through utilizing both material science and additive manufacturing mechanisms. This passive responsive mechanism can be utilized in adaptive facades for dynamic shading configurations.

summary Today's technologies offer exciting new horizons to reconfigure the realm of digital design and fabrication with the use of biologically active materials. Some of the recent works have been exploring the potentials of utilizing biological systems either as mathematical models for digital design or as the material itself in digital fabrication. As one of the novel processes of recent design thinking approaches, this paper presents an example for the collaboration with living organisms and a multidisciplinary process in which the overall structure is based on the analysis of biological material properties, mechanical data acquisition and the integration to digital optimization. In this regard, bacterial cellulose-based composite biofilms were grown and tested for their tensile properties, followed by a proposal to integrate mechanical data to digital optimization for catenary forms to better engage with real world applications. The findings have shown that the use of catenary geometry for such biologically active materials that are relatively novel to the structural use has proven effective for different prototypes thanks to their natural and customized material properties such as the ability to self-stand and biodegrade.

summary Computational design, in combination with robotic fabrication, allows the exploration of complex geometrical differentiation. Notably, thermoplastic sheet materials offer great potential for explorations in robotic fabrication due to their mailable qualities. However, the production of complex shapes from flat-sheet-thermoplastic materials usually depends on molds or on time-consuming procedures. This paper introduces a workflow for the design and fabrication of a double-curved surface made from plastic sheets, which develops a self-supporting structure through using robot-aided one-punch thermoforming. The thickness of a double-curved surface is optimized by applying the Finite Element Method. Notably, forming thermoplastic into a minimal surface strengthens its mechanical properties and this takes a relatively short period of time. According to the relationship between moment and stress in section, two connected minimal-surfaces form a three-dimensional I-profile, making it possible to construct a highly material-efficient structure. Unlike the normal form-finding process, the structure is not limited to compression-only geometry. Compared to thermoforming methods such as Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF), our one-punch forming process described in this paper shows demonstrates high precision while being less time-consuming. Here, we present a one-to-one scale working prototype as proof of our approach.

title Towards Hallucinating Machines - Designing with Computational Vision

summary There are particular similarities in how machines learn about the nature of their environment, and how humans learn to process visual stimuli. Machine Learning (ML), more specifically Deep Neural network algorithms rely on expansive image databases and various training methods (supervised, unsupervised) to “make sense” out of the content of an image. Take for example how students of architecture learn to differentiate various architectural styles. Whether this be to differentiate between Gothic, Baroque or Modern Architecture, students are exposed to hundreds, or even thousands of images of the respective styles, while being trained by faculty to be able to differentiate between those styles. A reversal of the process, striving to produce imagery, instead of reading it and understanding its content, allows machine vision techniques to be utilized as a design methodology that profoundly interrogates aspects of agency and authorship in the presence of Artificial Intelligence in architecture design. This notion forms part of a larger conversation on the nature of human ingenuity operating within a posthuman design ecology. The inherent ability of Neural Networks to process large databases opens up the opportunity to sift through the enormous repositories of imagery generated by the architecture discipline through the ages in order to find novel and bespoke solutions to architectural problems. This article strives to demystify the romantic idea of individual artistic design choices in architecture by providing a glimpse under the hood of the inner workings of Neural Network processes, and thus the extent of their ability to inform architectural design.The approach takes cues from the language and methods employed by experts in Deep Learning such as Hallucinations, Dreaming, Style Transfer and Vision. The presented approach is the base for an in-depth exploration of its meaning as a cultural technique within the discipline. Culture in the extent of this article pertains to ideas such as the differentiation between symbolic and material cultures, in which symbols are defined as the common denominator of a specific group of people.1 The understanding and exchange of symbolic values is inherently connected to language and code, which ultimately form the ingrained texture of any form of coded environment, including the coded structure of Neural Networks.A first proof of concept project was devised by the authors in the form of the Robot Garden. What makes the Robot Garden a distinctively novel project is the motion from a purely two dimensional approach to designing with the aid of Neural Networks, to the exploration of 2D to 3D Neural Style Transfer methods in the design process.

summary Adaptive reconfigurable structures are seen as the next big step in the evolution of architecture. However, to achieve this vision, new tools are required that enable autonomous configuration of given elements based on a specified design objective. Various approaches have been considered in the past, ranging from rule-based methods to evolutionary optimization. Although successful in applications where search heuristics or informative objective functions can be provided, these methods struggle with long-term planning problems. In this paper, we tackle the problem of sequential assembly of SL-blocks which has the character of a combinatorial optimization problem. We explore the applicability of deep reinforcement learning algorithms that recently showed great success on combinatorial problems in other domains, such as board games and molecular design. We highlight the unique challenges presented by the architectural design setting and compare the performance to evolutionary computation and heuristic search baselines.

summary Low-poly modeling as an emerging field in visual arts, product design and architecture has an essential effect both on the designer's and the viewer/user's experience. It has an advanced abstraction ability over the reconfiguration of form. This paper examines the visual features of low-poly form in terms of the computability of its aesthetics. A visual feature classification is made by referencing George David Birkhoff's aesthetic measure theory based on the complexity and order relationship. Topo[i]wall installation has been examined as a case study during the analysis. The relationship between form, computation, aesthetics and human-computer interaction are elaborated according to the results. It has been observed that low poly modeling offers a variation set in terms of compositional features, which are proportion, balance, vertical and horizontal network system while protecting its unity through the analysis of the generated computational model.

summary Global warming is becoming a huge threat in the 21st century. The building is the main contributor to energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions which play an important role in global warming. Using new technologies provides a step towards a better-built environment. Nanotechnology is an emerging technology that provides innovative materials that integrate with the building envelope to enhance energy efficiency and decrease energy consumption in buildings. Many Nano products are a promising candidate for building thermal insulation and increasing the building’s efficiency. This paper aims to reach minimum energy consumption by investigating Nanomaterials thermal performance on a building’s envelope in a hot arid climate. An office building in Cairo, Egypt is chosen as a case study. The paper presents an empirical/applied inquiry that is based on a computer simulation using Design Builder software. Energy consumption is calculated for different cases; the base model of the office building without using nanomaterials, and several nano models using nanomaterials. The results indicate that the use of Nanomaterials can enhance the thermal performance of the office building and save about 13.44 % of the annual energy consumption of the building.

summary This /practice-based design research/ investigates the possibility of computational design to increase agency and impact in emerging economies through real-world projects. By cultivating a new kind of relationship to issues in development and local untapped resources, they inspire for more public engagement and resource-based conversations within a spatial framework. The topics that were addressed in this research are the democratization of data and affordability of construction. These two on-going early-stage initiatives have used computational design tools at specific areas in the projects development, therefore optimizing the parts where low-tech tools werent sufficient. This demand driven design process explores ways in which different levels of technology can augment each other.

summary This paper proposes the development of a methodology for the digital generation of valid 3D-printed houses designs and fabrication programming, in the search for an emerging architectural language of this technology. The aim is to develop a transparent, generic and variable modeling and management process, based on some parametric patterns for 3D printing, architectural and construction design knowledge. That serves as an outline or insight of what can be designing architectural 3d-printed forms in the Construction 4.0 era. Preliminary results, discussion and further work are presented.

summary This paper posits a design approach that integrates multi-agent generative algorithms and structural topology optimisation to design intricate, structurally efficient forms. The research proposes a connection between two dichotomous principles: architectural complexity and structural efficiency. Both multi-agent algorithms and Bi-directional evolutionary structural optimisation (BESO) (Huang and Xie 2010), are emerging techniques that have significant potential in the design of form and structure.This research proposes a structural behaviour feedback loop through encoding BESO structural rules within the logic of multi-agent algorithms. This hybridisation of topology optimisation and swarm intelligence, described here as SwarmBESO, is demonstrated through two simple structural models. The paper concludes by speculating on the potential of this approach for the design of intricate, complex structures and their potential realisation through additive manufacturing.

summary The article presents and discusses the experience, methodology and results, of a design workshop held at the UNLaM. The proposal found its starting point in the registration of a current situation in which the architectural project is crossed by issues alien to a discipline whose principles are deeply speculative. summary This article approaches the theme of digital collage as a technique of graphic representation in Architecture and Urbanism emerging in cyberculture. The main objective is to highlight the underlying logic of digital collage as a representation language of contemporary architecture and urbanism projects. From a methodological point of view, this article is the result of qualitative, exploratory and descriptive research. In addition to the literature review on collage as an artistic and architectural expression, and its incorporation into digital culture, a study of multiple cases was carried out, taking as empirical object the graphic production of ten architecture and urbanism offices from different parts of the world. Finally, it appears that digital collages are consistent with the hybrid contemporary reality and create new poetics capable of representing the semantic and communicative dimension of architecture and urbanism design.

title An open, integrated modular format: For flexible and intelligible architecture, engineering and construction design and production

summary The architecture, engineering and construction sector is fragmented, and its computer-aided design systems suffer data loss and errors in workflow between design and realisation. An open source, integrated, modular format is proposed to address the technological nature of these problems. Accordingly, this research updates the notion of the modular format as a more flexible and intelligible computational design method by leveraging knowledge from the computer science and manufacturing sectors where the design and realisation process is intentional and explicit. The research design of this article comprises a theoretical approach combined with an empirical case study. Principles of modularity are extracted from the computer science and manufacturing sectors to assist with a better definition of architecture, engineering and construction computer-aided design processes that use materials and resources more efficiently and sustainably. The methodology of the modular format contributes to the emerging concept of a building lifecycle management system for the architecture, engineering and construction sector.

summary The interface of science and technology has become a fruitful transdisciplinary research field for spatial practices. To address this hybridization of space-related research, it is fundamental to ask what kind of practices are emerging within this context. To promote easy access and the dissemination of methodologies applied in innovative experimental spatial practices, the present study proposes the creation of a web-based Interactive Database for Experimental Architecture and Spatial Practices, IDEAS. Therefore, we will scope, observe, examine, and classify the digital cultural landscape in the 1960-2020 period. This paper describes the methodology applied to develop IDEAS.
