summary While technology has rapidly become available to more people, there is still a lack of representation and diversity among the individuals who develop and create with it. The implication of computational design and digital fabrication scholarship is that knowledge circulates through publications when, in a practical sense, it tends to be consolidated within a limited set of people and institutions. Even as the costs of hardware trend lower and free software and workfl ows are published online, specialized education and social capital are often necessary to apply this knowledge and produce innovative digital designs. And so, access to technology alone does not necessarily lead to greater equity.

Improving access to digital design knowledge—specifically methods and processes—could help address this concern. In scientific publications outside of architecture, the methodology section and technical appendices are critical to verification and advancement of the field. If an experiment cannot be duplicated, the validity of the result is called into question. The same standard does not seem to apply in computational design and digital fabrication, as the descriptions of projects are seldom detailed, transparent, or instructive enough to permit replication.

summary In recent years, academia has deviated from the lecture-based model to a hybridized system of instruction and experiential learning. Experiential learning aids students in understanding collaborative processes in architectural praxis and exposes them to engaging learning opportunities, a critical component of architectural studio education (Nijholt et al. 2013). During the COVID-19 outbreak, students are barred from accessing on-campus facilities. This causes a redevelopment of curricular delivery and disrupts experiential learning which heavily relies on in-person interaction. It is imperative for instructors to retain experiential learning in the transition to virtual instruction. This paper explores experiential learning within virtual platforms for instruction. Through outlining the implementation of technologies, capitalizing on connectivity, and maximizing opportunity for digital problem solving, the authors posit a framework that other educators may adopt. The paper concludes with a case study of a virtual design-build project, and the various techniques implemented in retaining experiential learning during the pandemic.

summary The integration of Artificial Intelligence algorithms into computational design processes promote a human-machine collaboration, transforming the role of conventional designers into meta-designer as a product of this collaboration. Specifically, StyleGAN's algorithms offer a novel approach to experimenting with shapes from previously designed images of products or objects. This article presents the application of a methodology for image experimentation to designers without previous knowledge of computation and programming. Each of the steps was developed through different cases for different speculative object production, using artificial intelligence algorithms, and reflecting - in an applied way - the designer's role as curator and co- creator of the creative process in conjunction with computing.

title Framework for decentralised architectural design BIM and Blockchain integration

summary The paper introduces a framework for decentralised architectural design in the context of the fourth industrial revolution. We examine first the constraints of building information modelling in regard to collaboration and trust. We then introduce Blockchain infrastructure as a means for creating new operational and business models for architectural design, through project governance, scaling collaboration nominally to thousands of agents, and shifting trust to the infrastructure rather than the architectural design team. Through a wider consideration of Blockchains in construction projects we focus on the design process and validate our framework with a prototype of BIM design optimisation integrated with a Blockchain mechanism. The paper concludes by outlining the contributions our framework can enhance in the building information modelling processes, within the context of the fourth industrial revolution.

summary This research demonstrates the development of a hybrid FRP-timber wall and slab system for multi-story structures. Bespoke computational tools and robotic fabrication processes allow for adaptive placement of material according to specific local requirements of the structure thus representing a resource-efficient alternative to established modes of construction. This constitutes a departure from pre-digital, material-intensive building methods, based on isotropic materials towards genuinely digital building systems using lightweight, hybrid composite elements.

Design and fabrication methods build upon previous research on lightweight fiber structures conducted at the University of Stuttgart and expand it towards inhabitable, multi-story building systems. Interdisciplinary design collaboration based on reciprocal computational feedback allows for the concurrent consideration of architectural, structural, fabrication and material constraints. The robotic coreless filament winding process only uses minimal, modular formwork and allows for the efficient production of morphologically differentiated building components.

The research results were demonstrated through Maison Fibre, developed for the 17th Architecture Biennale in Venice. Situated at the Venice Arsenale, the installation is composed of 30 plate like elements and depicts a modular, further extensible scheme. While this first implementation of a hybrid multi-story building system relies on established glass and carbon fiber composites, the methods can be extended towards a wider range of materials ranging from ultra-high-performance mineral fiber systems to renewable natural fibers.

summary This paper provides an original empirical study examining the engagement of artists, curators and virtual tools. The case focusses on a collaborative project called In the Forest with the Trees we Made. Since the publishing of the project, many compelling findings have been made in reference to both CAAD design and contemporary curatorial and creative practices. They have been made possible, by allowing multi-participants, institutions and disciplines to project their specific creative acts into a single sharable portal. The paper describes the activities of the participants. It then offers a discussion of how these interactions are seated in the new digital realm. The skills of spatialisation, movement through space, generation of geometry and orientation are made accessible through this new digital tool. To conclude, a reflection on the changes in space perception and how space becomes the matter being exhibited is offered.

summary In the architecture, engineering and construction industry (AEC) the transfer of knowledge and information through sharing, cooperation and collaboration serves to manage the inherent complexity of projects. Inter- and transdisciplinary teams including architects, engineers, consultants, contractors, suppliers and building owners, require shared design processes and understanding. Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) is part of how architectural information and knowledge is transferred through integrated processes. As part of an ongoing research this conference paper employs a Techno-Anthropological perspective to map existing research on the subject, to identify research gaps and to suggest further research. Given the ongoing changes the AEC industry is undergoing, we believe that Techno-Anthropology can contribute to systematic analysis and understanding of human-technology interactions. This research examines how VDC impacts upon the output of processes and how it affects the way interdisciplinary teams in AEC industry conceptualize and configure outputs.

summary This study was conducted to test the effectiveness of a virtual filter that digitally compensates for age-related changes in color perception. Many elderly people experience declining color perception. Medical studies have been conducted on how elderly peoples lenses affect their color perception. However, digital practical method for improving elderly peoples color perception need to be developed. Subway map is a good example of many elders daily experience. To adapt virtual filters to subway maps colors, standard short-wavelength colors, namely purple and green, were selected for variance independence (VI) because colors with short wavelengths of 400-600 nm on visible light are difficult for elderly people to perceive. Standard color VIs of subway lines and VI transferred to artificial lenses were measured with a spectrophotometer. CIE LAB and RGB; Color value on virtual filter (VD) was analyzed from VI. This virtual filter was developed based on artificial lenses using Dynamo. A visual programming algorithm was developed to adjust the color of a virtual filter through an interface. The results showed that virtual filters can be used to help elderly people detect short-wavelength colors. Therefore, virtual filters should be incorporated into lenses for use by the elderly.

summary This paper examines the relationship between designing interactive experiences based on new technologies and the process of architectural narration. It highlights the idea of rethinking a building with historical, architectural and functional value, as an experience and a journey. Referring to the historic building of the Municipal Market of Chania, Greece and using the conceptual idea of designing through narratives, it delineates the process of integrating new technologies into the process of designing a spatial and temporal experience. Exploiting Augmented Reality, we design an application implementing a digital layer with architectural and historical content, that is integrated into reality, improving the on-site visit, providing enhanced understanding of the building and introducing experiential visitor-building interaction. The application is available through mobile devices and the proposed system is evaluated by a group of users showing the positive effects of the use of interactive technologies in redesigning the experience of a space.

summary Whether it is via traditional methods with pen and paper or contemporary techniques such as 3D digital modelling and VR drawing, the eye typically plays a mostly passive or consuming role within the design process. By incorporating eye-tracking deeper within these methods, we can begin to discern this technologys possibilities as a method that encompasses the visual experience as an active input. Our research, however, developed the Eye-Tracking Voxel Environment Sculptor (EVES) that incorporates eye-tracking as there design actor. Through EVES we can extend eye-tracking as an active design medium. The eye-tracking data garnered from the designer within EVES is directly utilised as an input within a modelling environment to manipulate and sculpt voxels. In addition to modelling input, eye-tracking is also explored in its usability in the Virtual Reality User Interface. Eye-tracking is implemented within EVES to this extent to test the limits and possibilities of eye-tracking and the Human-Computer Interface within the realm of Virtual Reality Aided Design.

summary This paper presents findings of a survey conducted to assess students’ experiences within the online instruction stage of their architectural education during the lockdown period caused by the COVID-19 pandemic between March and June 2020. The study was conducted in two departments of architecture in both Cairo branches of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT), Egypt, with special focus on courses involving a CAAD component. The objective of this exploratory study was to understand students’ learning experiences within the online period, and to investigate challenges facing architectural education. A mixed methods study was used, where a questionnaire-based survey was developed to gather qualitative and quantitative data based on the opinions of a sample of students from both departments. Findings focus on the qualitative component to describe students’ experiences, with quantitative data used for triangulation purposes. Results underline students’ positive learning experiences and challenges faced. Insights regarding digital tool preferences were also revealed. Findings are not only significant in understanding an important event that caused remote architectural education in Egypt but may also serve as an important stepping-stone towards the future of design education in light of newly-introduced disruptive online learning technologies made necessary in response to lockdowns worldwide

summary As a traditional building material, clay has been used by humans for a long time. From early civilisations, to the modern dependence on new technologies, the craft of clay making is commonly linked with the use of moulds, handmade creations, ceramic extruders, etc. (Schmandt and Besserat, 1977). Clay in the form of bricks is one of the oldest building materials known (Fernandes et al, 2010). This research expands the possibilities offered by standardised bricks by testing types of clay, forms, shapes, porosity, and structural methods. The traditional way of working with clay relies on human craftsmanship and is based on the use of semi-solid clay (Fernandes et al., 2010). However, there is little research on the use of clay slurry. With the rise of 3D printing systems in recent years, research and development has been emerging on using clay as a 3D printing filament (Gürsoy, 2018). Researchers have discovered that in order for 3D-printed clay slurry to solidify quickly to support the weight of the added layers during printing, curing agents such as lime, coal ash, cement, etc. have to be added to the clay slurry. After adding these substances, clay is difficult to be reused and can have a negative effect on the environment (Chen et al., 2021). In this study, a unique method for manufacturing clay elements of intricate geometries is proposed with the help of an internal skeleton that can be continuously reused. The study introduces the process of applying clay on a special structure through spraying and showcases how this method creates various opportunities for customisation of production.

summary The ASCAAD 2021 conference theme addresses the gradual shift in computational design from prototypical morphogenetic-centered associations in the architectural discourse. This imminent shift of focus is increasingly stirring a debate in the architectural community and is provoking a much needed critical questioning of the role of computation in architecture as a sole embodiment and enactment of technical dimensions, into one that rather deliberately pursues and embraces the humanities as an ultimate aspiration. We have encouraged researchers and scholars in the CAAD community to identify relevant visions and challenging aspects such as: from the tangible to the intangible, from the physical to the phenomenological, from mass production to mass customization, from the artifact-centered to the human-centered, and from formalistic top-down approaches to informed bottom-up approaches. A parallel evolving impact in the field of computational design and innovation is the introduction of disruptive technologies which are concurrently transforming practices and businesses. These technologies tend to provoke multiple transformations in terms of processes and workflows, methodologies and strategies, roles and responsibilities, laws and regulations, and consequently formulating diverse emergent modes of design thinking, collaboration, and innovation. Technologies such as mixed reality, cloud computing, robotics, big data, and Internet of Things, are incessantly changing the nature of the profession, inciting novel modes of thinking and rethinking architecture, developing new norms and impacting the future of architectural education. With this booming pace into highly disruptive modes of production, automation, intelligence, and responsiveness comes the need for a revisit of the inseparable relation between technology and the humanities, where it is possible to explore the urgency of a pressing dialogue between the transformative nature of the disruptive on the one hand and the cognitive, the socio-cultural, the authentic, and the behavioral on the other.

summary Most approaches developed to teach parametric design principles in architectural education have focused on universal strategies that often result in the fixation of students towards perceiving parametric design as standard blindly followed scripts and procedures, thus defying the purpose of the bottom-up framework of form finding. Material-based computation has been recently introduced in computational design, where parameters and rules related to material properties are integrated into algorithmic thinking. In this paper, we discuss the process and outcomes of a computational design course focused on the interplay between the physical and the digital. Two phases of physical/digital exploration are discussed: (1) physical exploration with different materials and fabrication techniques to arrive at the design logic of a prototype panel module, and (2) deducing and developing an understanding of rules and parameters, based on the interplay of materials, and deriving strategies for pattern propagation of the panel on a façade composition using variation and complexity. The process and outcomes confirmed the initial hypothesis, where the more explicit the material exploration and identification of physical rules and relationships, the more nuanced the parametrically driven process, where students expressed a clear goal oriented generative logic, in addition to utilizing parametric design to inform form finding as a bottom-up approach.

summary During the COVID-19 pandemic situation, educational institutions were forced to conduct all academic activities in distance learning formats, including the architecture program. This act barred interaction between students and supervisors only through their computers screen. Therefore, in this study, we explored an opportunity to utilize virtual reality (VR) technology to help students understand and evaluate design outcomes from an architectural design studio course in a virtual environment setting. The design evaluation process is focused on building affordance and user accessibility aspect based on the design objectives that students must achieve. As a result, we developed a game-engine based VR system called VRDR for evaluating design studio outcomes modeled as Building Information Modeling (BIM) models.

summary Re-coding post-war Syria is an ongoing research and data platform, focused on innovation and collecting comprehensive, infrastructural and socioeconomic analytics, synchronization data, by using AI driven to give a more transparent image of innovating a new methodology to regenerate the future of post-war smart cities into advanced and sustainable urban environments in a smarter way (Fig. 1). The pressure to achieve a rapid Post-war smart city without clear strategy and comprehensive analysis of all aspects will cause a particularly catastrophic collapse in the interconnected social structure, services, education and health care system, leaving a long-term impact on the society. This paper presents the current status of the Research & Documentation methodology in the Data Collection phase by the objective investigations conducted through a series of local and international workshops species developed in this research called “Re-Coding“, offering consequent direct ground surveys, statistics and documentation study of the targeted areas, merging professionalism and youth power with local community to detect an open source data used as a tool to re-generate a precarious area towards a new methodology.

summary At the beginning of the twenty-first century, a discipline at the intersection of digital art and science explores how natural and artificial species are affected, coexist, and feed back to humans based on multi-scalar hybrid models. They embody types of surveillance entities or non-human custodians, and serve as inspiration for another generation of designs produced ten years later, the case studies that are presented here. This paper explains the design and parametric fundamentals of a digital architecture installation at the University of Alicante (Spain 2021) using CNC models and the TouchDesigner programming environment. The installation contains a clan of technological-virtual hybrid species, non-human custodians, which: (a) strengthen the Proposal’s discourse on the recognition of legal identity of the Mar Menor lagoon (Southeast Spain); (b) incorporate reactive designs; (c) help raise awareness of the effect of human actions on the lagoon’s ecology and nearby streams. The viewpoint is not anthropocentric, because it adopts the perspective of the foraging fish species or the oxygen-seeking algae species, among others, in order to reveal the deterioration processes. In most cases, the result is a sort of synaesthetic conversation that interweaves light, sound, movement and data.

summary The Co-design method has great relevance in the inclusion of different classes of users in the Design Process (DP), such as Visually Impaired People (PwDS) and children. This work indicates results of three Co-design dynamics. Focus Group, guided tour, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and workshops were carried out, as strategies for the inclusion of different users in the DP. The process of designing an inclusive signage board for PwDS is presented. Next, the project of inclusive playgrounds for visually impaired children. Finally, an activity carried out with basic education students, combining new technologies in the child's learning process. Participants were encouraged to express their knowledge through different tools that adapted to their reality. The results show the importance of including different methods, tools and resources to support the DP. In addition, Digital Fabrication and Prototyping are techniques that enhance Co-design, as they act as congratulators for communication between the designer and users.

summary “Unfolding” is a pavilion comprised of six lightweight structures designed for the London Design Biennale 2021. “UnFolding” examines the potential for using engineered timber with digital tools to produce flexible interiors. The pavilion is folded through kerfing methods into fractal-based structures. Extensive research, testing and sample fabrication to acquire optimal flexibility of different timber members through kerf patterns was accomplished for the project.

summary The paper describes a site-specific architectural soundscape installation created during a workshop in August 2021 at the Domaine de Boisbuchet in France. Far from urban noise, participants were attuned to natural, artificial, and human sound spheres, placing them in dialog and interweaving them through emulation, voice recording, and electro-acoustic devices including piezoceramic sensors, small motors, speakers, and embedded electronics. This expository paper includes qualitative descriptions of the spatial sound compositions, the technology that supported them, and the performance into which they were integrated. The results of this event were described by participants as trance-like, with phasing of multiple periodically organized emergent sound phenomena creating a deeply immersive distributed environment. In describing in detail, the tools, processes, outcomes and implications of the workshop, this paper offers an example of a design approach and model that can contribute immersive distributed architectural soundscape design through human and non-human sound interaction.
