title Open-Source Social Housing Architecture: Wikihouse “Sr. Manoel”

summary This is the first Wikihouse project to be built in a vulnerable community in Brazil. Brazil is a country with a large housing deficit concentrated in large metropolitan regions. The work is the result of an initiative to address part of this demand using the Wikihouse open-source system. The project was developed using the Design Science Research methodology in three stages: conception, prototyping and production of an experiential module on a 1:1 scale. The results demonstrated the need to develop a better structured design ecology to make the Wikihouse system viable in the Brazilian context. This design ecology concerns an integrated network of services that includes project development centers, prototyping spaces, mini-factories for production, pre-assembly and batch organization environments, logistics services, human resource management teams and integration with the community, in addition to registration, documentation and communication.

summary Re-coding post-war Syria is an ongoing research and data platform, focused on innovation and collecting comprehensive, infrastructural and socioeconomic analytics, synchronization data, by using AI driven to give a more transparent image of innovating a new methodology to regenerate the future of post-war smart cities into advanced and sustainable urban environments in a smarter way (Fig. 1). The pressure to achieve a rapid Post-war smart city without clear strategy and comprehensive analysis of all aspects will cause a particularly catastrophic collapse in the interconnected social structure, services, education and health care system, leaving a long-term impact on the society. This paper presents the current status of the Research & Documentation methodology in the Data Collection phase by the objective investigations conducted through a series of local and international workshops species developed in this research called “Re-Coding“, offering consequent direct ground surveys, statistics and documentation study of the targeted areas, merging professionalism and youth power with local community to detect an open source data used as a tool to re-generate a precarious area towards a new methodology.

summary The gradual rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its increasing visibility among many research disciplines affected Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD). Architectural deep learning (DL) approaches are being developed and published on a regular basis, such as retrieval (Sharma et al. 2017) or design style manipulation (Newton 2019; Silvestre et al. 2016). However, there seems to be no method to evaluate highly constrained spatial configurations for specific architectural domains (such as housing or office buildings) based on basic architectural principles and everyday practices. This paper introduces an automatic constraint-based consistency checker to evaluate the coherency of semantic spatial configurations of housing construction using a small set of design principles to evaluate our DL approaches. The consistency checker informs about the overall performance of a spatial configuration followed by whether it is open/closed and the constraints it didn't satisfy. This paper deals with the relation of spaces processed as mathematically formalized graphs contrary to existing model checking software like Solibri.

title An open, integrated modular format: For flexible and intelligible architecture, engineering and construction design and production

summary The architecture, engineering and construction sector is fragmented, and its computer-aided design systems suffer data loss and errors in workflow between design and realisation. An open source, integrated, modular format is proposed to address the technological nature of these problems. Accordingly, this research updates the notion of the modular format as a more flexible and intelligible computational design method by leveraging knowledge from the computer science and manufacturing sectors where the design and realisation process is intentional and explicit. The research design of this article comprises a theoretical approach combined with an empirical case study. Principles of modularity are extracted from the computer science and manufacturing sectors to assist with a better definition of architecture, engineering and construction computer-aided design processes that use materials and resources more efficiently and sustainably. The methodology of the modular format contributes to the emerging concept of a building lifecycle management system for the architecture, engineering and construction sector.

summary Children's playgrounds or also called playgrounds are open spaces, the basis for children's recreation. Important for the inclusion and mobility of visually impaired children in the social environment, through inclusive urban facilities that stimulate new experiences for their cognitive development. In this context, the use of Co-design with visually impaired people, in the design processes of children's playgrounds, assumes an importance for an inclusive project based on their experiences. Thus, it aimed to promote a project together, to provide more comfort and safety to users. It presents as main results as better colors, materials and types of toys for children with visual impairment to be competent in a playground including from the application of methods, tools and resources in the Co-design process.

summary House Block was a temporary housing prototype in East London, UK from April to May 2021. The project constituted the most recent in a series of experiments developing Automated Architecture (AUAR) Labs’ discrete framework for housing production, one which repositions the architect as curator of a system and enables participants to engage with active agency. Recognizing that there is a knowledge gap to be addressed for this reconfiguration of practices to take form, this project centred on making automation and its potential for local communities tangible. This sits within broader calls advocating for a more material alignment of inclusive design with makers and 21st Century making in practice (see, for example, Luck 2018).

House Block was designed and built using AUAR’s discrete housing system consisting of a kit of parts, known as Block Type A. Each block was CNC milled from a single sheet of plywood, assembled by hand, and then post-tensioned on site. Constructed from 270 identical blocks, there are no predefined geometric types or hierarchy between parts. The discrete enables an open-ended, adaptive system where each block can be used as a column, floor slab, wall, or stair—allowing for disconnection, reconfiguration, and reassembly (Retsin 2019). The democratisation of design and production that defines the discrete creates points for alternative value systems to enter, for critical realignments in architectural production.

summary As Hong Kong constructs increasingly high-density, high-rise public housing estates to increase land use efficiency, public in-between spaces are more constrained, which impacts the quality of social relations, movements and daily practices of residents (Shelton et al. 2011; Tang et al. 2019). Current planning practices are focused on the achievement of quantitative performance measures, rather than qualitative design considerations that support residents experiences and community interaction. This paper presents a new methodology that combines urban analysis and generative design for the regeneration of social housing estates, based on the spatial and social qualities of their in-between spaces.

summary Recently, photogrammetry has become a relatively easy and low-cost method for cultural heritage 3D reconstruction. Plenty of free and open-source photogrammetry programs have been developed, but not all of them provide an adequate solution for the 3D reconstruction of cultural heritage. In this research, an overview of the state-of-the-art open-source photogrammetry programs was done. In order to investigate whether among the open-source software packages there is an adequate alternative to the commercial software for the purpose of cultural heritage 3D reconstruction, the open-source software - AliceVision Meshroom was compared to the most commonly used commercial software Agisoft Metashape. The programs were compared on the examples of cultural heritage objects and according to the predefined criteria that are important for achieving detailed and accurate 3D reconstruction. The results of testing and comparing the 3D reconstructions obtained using Meshroom and Metashape were illustrated and explained through two case studies of antic objects of cultural heritage, characterized by similar materialization, but different geometric shapes.

summary Buildings are an important source of CO2 emissions and account for almost a third of final energy consumption globally. The necessity to achieve energy efficiency standards in new and existing buildings is now recognised. The residential sector consumes 25% of the global energy and is responsible of 17% of the global CO2 emissions. EU governments have developed different support measures to decrease energy consumption in the residential sector. However, energy renovation by individual homeowners is lagging because the support measures do not take into account concerns of homeowners. This study is part of Sustainable housing for strong communities (Stronghouse) project, which aim to propose new tools and redesign support measures based on a better understanding of the drivers that motivate homeowners. This paper proposes a new user-friendly web-based multi-criteria decision-making tool that aims to empower homeowners to select the appropriate energy improvement method for their home fitting their criteria. The set of criteria that will be included in the application will be based on the preferences of residents obtained through questionnaires. A layered approach will be used to develop the proposed web application

summary The increment of the average life expectancy and the birth rate reduction in developed countries generates invariably a massive global population ageing. Assuming that residential houses are adaptable for elder citizen requirements, it will be important to provide the quality of life and social support for this fringe of population, maintenance of its use and avoiding abrupt space changes for nursing houses, for example. summary This paper is a study of an ongoing housing project in Brussels (SMH) which involves bottom-up spatial occupation and 'making' by activists, activist architects, social workers and citizens. The particular focus of this paper is on the critical spatial agency of the citizens, activist-architects and artefacts for enabling architectural design justice (ADJ) in the SMH. Building on the Actor-Network Theory of Latour (2005) we developed an analytic method called Actor Link Mapping and Analysis (ALMA) which involves data collection from a wide range of network actors, the generation of a variety of digital network maps, making computational analysis, followed by workshops and interviews to discuss the findings. ALMA was used to recognize potential assets which are essential for design justice practices and networks. The analysis revealed the limits to community control of design processes and practices as well as limits to the conceptual links surrounding socio-spatial equality, thus limits to design justice in the SMH project. Our research also revealed a plethora of new roles and agencies in bottom-up housing production which were essential to understanding the dynamics and power distribution among the different actors.

summary Modern CNC weft knitting machines are capable to produce textiles with complex non-uniform structures and shapes in a single operation with minimum human intervention. The type of knit structure and the settings of the knitting machine significantly influence the fabric characteristics and its role in architectural comfort. However, there is still no open-access tool for fast and efficient analysis of textiles with consideration of their knit structure, especially if they are knitted non-uniformly. Moreover, the existing methodologies of digital modeling of the knit structure are not linked to the actual production of textiles on flat-bed knitting machines. This paper presents a tool that "reads" a bitmap image that can be as well imported into a knitting machine software and generates a yarn-level geometry of the knitted textiles, that can be further integrated into the behavior analysis software within the rhino-grasshopper environment. This methodology helps to preview and analyze knitted textiles before production and can help to optimize the programming of bespoke knitted textiles for large-scale architectural applications.

summary COVID-19 was first reported in late December 2019 and quickly become a global health crisis. In the COVID-19 pandemic context, the dense and open characteristics make the public spaces a potential virus transmission hotspot. Therefore, it is extremely critical to adopt a more advanced and effective method in public environments to slow down its spread until a vaccine is widely used. A smart environment in the form of IoT, also known as the architecture of IoT, consists of three layers: perception layer, network layer, and application layer. A smart environment allows data and activities that happen in this environment to be collected, processed, and shared in real-time through various sensors. It can be introduced for early detection, tracking, and monitoring of potential confirmed cases. The smart environment is considered one of the most promising approaches to face and tackle the current scenario. However, research focusing on the potential of IoT smart environment in reaction to COVID-19 is still meager. Therefore, this paper identifies the smart environments potential based on the concept of IoT architectures three layers and further discusses how IoT can be introduced in public spaces to help battle the pandemic.

summary The Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) launched the Cultural History Project in 2021 to mark the 40th anniversary of the organization and the 41st anniversary of the conference. This initiative has provided an opportunity to reflect upon the legacy and trends of the organization as a method for considering its future. The Cultural History Project began with an open-access digital archive of the organization’s Proceedings and Quarterlies and evolved into a larger discourse about how the ACADIA community values and promotes forms of computational knowledge. A summary essay included in the 2021 Proceedings (Image 2) reflects on what the archive reveals about ACADIA and its “habits”. Habits are settled tendencies or practices, especially ones that are difficult to relinquish. The term implies repetition, perhaps unconscious, that becomes normalized through its reiteration. The 2023 ACADIA Conference, “Habits of the Anthropocene,” marks the 43rd anniversary of the conference and the 42nd anniversary of ACADIA as an organization. What are the computational habits we need to identify, recall, question, break, and replace with new (or perhaps old) ways of thinking and working?

summary Plenty of challenges all over the world are affecting the urban development of spaces in the cities, especially those of heritage sites; these urban spaces provide various ambiances that appeal to the senses. Although surrounded open spaces in heritage sites are full of rich, deep knowledge that plays an active role in the community perceptions, it has been recently neglected. A contribution is paid to the combination of digital technologies to help in preserving those spaces. Its integrated use could exponentially increase the effectiveness of conservation strategies of ancient buildings. GIS technology became a usual documentation tool for heritage managers, conservators, restorers, architects, archaeologists, painters, and all other categories of experts involved in cultural heritage activities. Consequently, the GIS has faced strong criticism as it is a tool for documentation without engaging in the public environment and the users’ needs; as a result, GIS cannot help in any enhancing process as it does not have any idea about the needs of the users. This paper analyses public uses efficiency in heritage public spaces in Cairene context using public participation geographic information system (PPGIS) methodology, as it gives attention to the term “user” to include the “public” incorporating the concept of “public participation” commonly used in planning. An online survey was set up, based on Google Maps, where respondents were asked to place and rate twenty-five items on an interactive map done by (ARCGIS 10.4). These items were based on the criteria of placemaking to make those spaces full of creative ambiance to be more attractive and useful to the communities. Finally, 200 valid surveys have been collected and mapped 1500 opinions have been mapped. The Results of this research show that PPGIS is an effective tool in measuring the efficiency of those heritage public spaces, which may be valuable for future planning.

summary This year's conference theme `Towards a new configurable architecture', provides a good starting point for reappraising and reapplying previous concepts of `Configuration' in architectural design. The concept reappears often, but was particularly powerful whenever new computational tools and architectural concepts emerged and revealed strong synergies. In the 1960ties there was such a moment when configuration's pluralistic properties embraced architectural concepts of structuralism and early computing. Therefore this paper looks back at previous concepts of configuration to identify capacities that could inform current synergies of computational tools, such as open platforms, and architectural concepts of the second digital turn in architecture. The way we communicate, access, and exchange information recently accelerated towards realtime sharing of data, bits & pieces, and experiences. Open platforms that enable user-generated content and collective production of value are becoming more common in design. This paper discusses ways in which this collective content production can enable a computational and human-centric architecture, by reappraising previous concepts of configuration such as: open configurations, latent structures and variable infills.

A majority of these are employed in high-income “developed” countries with advanced democratic systems which aim at including citizens; desires, needs, proposals as valuable input in city-making processes. In contrast, in the Global South, only a limited number of ICT-based practices aim to empower the citizens in urban design and planning at higher instances. There is a need for deeper research into how citizens can be involved in urban design in developing countries like Turkey situated in between the Global North and the South. In this context, this research will focus on Istanbul, Turkey as a key case. Different than the developed world context, enabling ICT-based participation in Turkey has a wide range of challenges. Among those are the lack of open and governmental data and transparency, the unwillingness of the policymakers to promote and employ participatory design, top-down approaches are the other weak points of these countries. Responding to these challenges, the aims of this study are: 1) to critically address the weaknesses and requirements of existing urban development practices in developing countries with a focus on Turkey, Istanbul and 2) to discuss the possible potentials of ICT-based participation tools and techniques to involve citizens in city-making processes.

summary Short Stack is a bare minimal structure using only laminated sheets of structural metal decking for all elements of its structure and enclosure. The project operates under a simple principle. Structural metal decking is a one-way system that resists loads well in one direction, but not in the other. When this decking is stacked into rotated sections and tensioned together, the resultant sandwich of corrugated metal is resistant to loading in every direction. These sandwiches become walls, floors, and roofs to a temporary structure. The compounded effect at the edges of the rotated and cropped decking is one of filigree or an ornamental articulation. The sandwich, which is mostly hollow due to the section of the decking, provides a sense of airy lightness that is at odds with its bulky mass. The structure, therefore, teeters between being unexpectedly open and at once heavy. The economy of the project is in its uniformity and persistent singularity. By maintaining a single palette of material and using a plasma cutting CNC bed to cut each section of the decking, the structure is simply assembled. The digital intelligence that lies underneath the apparent formal simplicity of the project is two-fold. Firstly, each sheet of metal decking is different from the next. Because of the locations of bolt-holes and constant variability of rotation and cropping of each sheet, it is a project that expresses uniformity rather than articulation through discretization. Secondly, the project appears solid and monolithic but is hollowed structurally to minimize the weight of the assembly. Parametric tools are implemented to maximize material efficiencies by hollowing the interior of each sandwich for load optimization. The project is presently in prototyping and documentation and will go into construction in Spring 2021 on a site in downtown Denver.

title BIM quality control based on requirement linked data

summary This article discusses a BIM Quality Control Ecosystem that is based on Requirement Linked Data in order to create a framework where automated BIM compliance checking methods can be widely used. The meaning of requirements is analyzed in a building project context as a basis for data flow analysis: what are the main types of requirements, how they are handled, and what sources they originate from. A literature review has been conducted to find the present development directions in quality checking, besides a market research on present, already widely used solutions. With the conclusions of these research and modern data management theory, the principles of a holistic approach have been defined for quality checking in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. A comparative analysis has been made on current BIM compliance checking solutions according to our review principles. Based on current practice and ongoing research, a state-of-the-art BIM quality control ecosystem is proposed that is open, enables automation, promotes interoperability, and leaves the data governing responsibility at the sources of the requirements. In order to facilitate the flow of requirement and quality data, we propose a model for requirements as Linked Data and provide example for quality checking using Shapes Constraint Language (SHACL). As a result, an opportunity is given for better quality and cheaper BIM design methods to be implemented in the industry.

summary Facing the current environmental crises, architecture must embrace sustainable modes of design and production. This requires the careful selection of the materials by assessing their lifecycle performance, which is not yet an easy and stable practice. In this context, this paper presents an assessment model called Rob-LCA to evaluate environmental-sensitive material selection for robotic fabrication. The model takes the data related to design and material as an input, it gives the Environmental Impact Indicator based on calculations. Then, designers evaluate and compare the fabrication processes, whether the environmental impact of the materials is satisfactory for the designed object. As a contribution, the proposed model complements information of the environmental impact of the A3, and A5 phases of the typical LCA method, adapting the customization and construction abilities of the robotic fabrication. In this study, the Rob-LCA was tested with the CorkCrete Arch prototype for a compound building system developed by Digital Fabrication Laboratory (DFL). By considering its multi-material panel, the production life cycles of cork and expanded polystyrene were assessed. Initial findings of the test of the model show that the proposed model might open a new path for sustainable manufacturing. This work presents thus a contribution to frame and align the use of digital design and fabrication processes with the current demands for environmental sustainability.
