summary From the view of concepts related to emotions and feelings treated in the field of cognitive - behavioral neuroscience and its relation with the teaching-learning processes, this paper searches to analyze educational strategies that can contribute to the field of emergency synchronous remote teaching architectural design. Methodologically, the bibliographical research of exploratory nature is related to an experience of investigation about pedagogical methods of teaching architectural design in a postgraduate course, developed, in the second semester of 2020, during the period of emergency synchronous remote teaching due to the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus.We seek to comprehend the benefits and limits of remote emergency teaching practices of architectural design, looking at factors such as emotions and feelings as important mediation tools on teaching-learning processes.

summary The COVID-19 pandemic has immense impact on our daily life. Precautions like facemasks and social distancing restrict the economy as well as the social life. The aim of the bachelor project was to support architects by integrating health specifications into a software environment and automatically derive specific design support by analyzing architecture. This interdisciplinary project combined architectural and medical expertise to determine the risk of SARS-CoV-2-infection in enclosed spaces by a software approach on basis of parameters provided by the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (Mainz, Germany) and the Association of German Engineers. Subsequently, calculated risks were evaluated by hygiene experts and summarized in a traffic light scheme, which is clearly intelligible and thus allows simple use. Furthermore, the software concept provides instructions for action for architects and specialists in the field of infection control and suggests architectural tools to minimize the risk of infection. The developed concept can be applied to an existing building and contribute to the planning of new buildings.

summary The sand table is a tool of expression of urban planning.With the development of computer science and technology,virtual reality technology is playing an important role in many aspects of urban planning and design,as well as,the virtual sand table.This article analyzes the limitations of the current urban planning sand table from designers and other participants perspectives. It analyses the advantages of applying interactive technology in a sand table for urban planning and proposes using such interactive technology in the future. This paper will also investigate three aspects of interactions: human-computer interaction technology, collaborative interaction technology, remote visual interaction technology. The application of interactive technology on the virtual sand table, on the one hand, can carry out a multi-angle forward-looking analysis of the problems of urban construction and improve the efficiency of planning and approval, and development; on the other hand, it can increase public participation in urban planning and design.

summary In the age of mass customization, virtual reality (VR) allows users to virtually visualize architecture from any viewpoint they prefer and to examine the design. It is important to evaluate the movement of the virtual camera to guarantee the quality of VR content in addition to preventing VR sickness. The development of rendering methods to visualize the speed of VR cameras has begun. However, the only absolute velocity values are insufficient because the amount of movement of objects close to the camera is large, and that of distant objects is small. Therefore, this research aims to develop a visualization method of relative velocities known as motion vectors on a VR screen. A prototype of a new rendering technique has been implemented and successfully applied to a VR application for design review of a complex building. There are two rendering methods to display a gradient in RGB colors and to give a motion blur effect. This function allows VR creators to understand where in the virtual world VR sickness is likely to occur.

summary In this study, we explore the role of Architecture within the COVID-19 pandemic. Our research focuses on the role of buildings and smaller-scale spaces on virus spread instead of large-scale environments. The approach tests the scenarios through which the interaction between humans and enclosed built environments impacts virus exposure probabilities. We propose a comprehensive parametric modeling approach of the most significant parameters shown to impact COVID-19 spread in educational buildings. This publication presents the models by aspect, extending our initial research on the Spatiotemporal Modeling of COVID-19 Spread in Built environments based on human-to-human and fomite contagion. It includes the most significant parameter of the spread: airborne transmission. The proof-of-concept study for this research is a K-12 educational setting.

summary This paper investigates the transfer of tacit knowledge between designers and the computer in architectural design. Most research efforts in computational architectural design recently focus on the tangible and technical domains of the design process. This resulted in a lack of understanding of the role of other qualitative intangible domains, such as tacit design knowledge, in the computational design process. Despite the attempts of a few recent studies to tackle some tacit aspects within design computing, little research extended further to study how tacit knowledge can be transferred between different entities of the computational design process and how it can be represented. Through an analytical review, the paper will first discuss the notions of tacit knowledge in different disciplines, with particular emphases on architecture. Second, the study reviews the conditions and factors that influence the transfer of tacit knowledge between humans, and accordingly between the human and the computer, as addressed by different architects and authors. The study particularly emphasizes the significance of a human-computer symbiotic relationship for the process of tacit knowledge transfer to take place. In conclusion, this paper presents a theoretical basis for understanding and facilitating the transfer and representation of tacit knowledge in a computational design environment.

summary The ASCAAD 2021 conference theme addresses the gradual shift in computational design from prototypical morphogenetic-centered associations in the architectural discourse. This imminent shift of focus is increasingly stirring a debate in the architectural community and is provoking a much needed critical questioning of the role of computation in architecture as a sole embodiment and enactment of technical dimensions, into one that rather deliberately pursues and embraces the humanities as an ultimate aspiration. We have encouraged researchers and scholars in the CAAD community to identify relevant visions and challenging aspects such as: from the tangible to the intangible, from the physical to the phenomenological, from mass production to mass customization, from the artifact-centered to the human-centered, and from formalistic top-down approaches to informed bottom-up approaches. A parallel evolving impact in the field of computational design and innovation is the introduction of disruptive technologies which are concurrently transforming practices and businesses. These technologies tend to provoke multiple transformations in terms of processes and workflows, methodologies and strategies, roles and responsibilities, laws and regulations, and consequently formulating diverse emergent modes of design thinking, collaboration, and innovation. Technologies such as mixed reality, cloud computing, robotics, big data, and Internet of Things, are incessantly changing the nature of the profession, inciting novel modes of thinking and rethinking architecture, developing new norms and impacting the future of architectural education. With this booming pace into highly disruptive modes of production, automation, intelligence, and responsiveness comes the need for a revisit of the inseparable relation between technology and the humanities, where it is possible to explore the urgency of a pressing dialogue between the transformative nature of the disruptive on the one hand and the cognitive, the socio-cultural, the authentic, and the behavioral on the other.

summary Architecture Digital Platforms are capable of creating buildings that provide comfort that meets human thermal, acoustic and visual needs. However, some building technologies can choose the physical energy arena of the building on the expense of the mentioned aspects of human comfort. Nevertheless, aspects like emotional and psychological human comfort exist in limited studies practiced in interior design, or in active design of public spaces and on the landscape and urban scale. It is not mandatory in building design: How different spaces affect humans and what makes an environment stressful or not. Study gathers literature theoretically and categorizes it per topic: 1) Affective computing Introduction and uses, 2) Human responses to different stimulus and environments, 3) Factors that affect humans, 4) Technologies like brain imaging and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) that are used to measure human anxiety levels, as well as blood pressure and other indications on the person’s well-being, and some 5) Case Studies. Affective computing can be an addition to different pre- design analysis made to a project. Different areas of comfort like space dimensions, height, colour and shape can be the start of coding “Human Comfort” analysis software. Study has been restricted to previous research, and can be expanded further to experimentation. Future work aims to code it into Building Information Modelling Software.

summary For students, studying architecture necessitates a fundamental shift in learning mode and attitude in the transition from school. Beginner students are often surprised by the new mode of learning-by-doing and the new learner identity that they must adopt and adapt to in the design studio. Moreover, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, architecture teaching has moved online. Both instructors and students are experiencing dramatic changes in their modes of teaching and learning due to the sudden move from on-campus design studios to a virtual alternative, with only the bare minimum of resources and relevant experience. This study explored the virtual design studio as a transformative learning model for disaster and resilience context, including the factors that affect foundation students’ perceptions and experiences of the quality of this adaptation. Data obtained from 248 students who took online design studios during the lockdown in 15 universities in Jordan highlight many factors that make the experience of the online design studio more challenging. Despite these challenges, strongly positive aspects of the online studio were evident and widely discussed. A model of hyper-flexible design studio in which students can have a direct contact with their instructors when needed – in addition to online activities, reviews, and written feedback – is highly recommended for the beginner years. This HyFlex model will enrich students’ learning and understanding of the fundamentals of design and ensure that technology solutions deliver significant and sustainable benefits.

summary Architectural design is an intellectual activity where the architect moves from the abstract to the real. In this process, the abstract represents the logical reasoning of how architectural form is configured or structured, while the real refers to the final physical form. Diagrams become an integral part of the conceptual design stage because they mediate between those two realms. Building Information Modeling (BIM) can reallocate the effort and time to emphasize conceptual design. However, many consider BIM a professionally-oriented tool that is less suitable for the early design stages. This research suggests that architectural design reasoning can be achieved using constraint-based parametric diagrams to aid conceptual design in BIM. The study examines several techniques and constructs a framework to use diagrams in the early design stages. This framework has been investigated through Villa Stein and Citrohan House by Le Corbusier. This study addresses two roles of diagrams: the generative role to create various design solutions and the analytical one to conduct an early performance study of the building. Our research contributes to the discussion on the ways designers can use digital diagrams to support the architectural design process.

summary Global warming is becoming a huge threat in the 21st century. The building is the main contributor to energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions which play an important role in global warming. Using new technologies provides a step towards a better-built environment. Nanotechnology is an emerging technology that provides innovative materials that integrate with the building envelope to enhance energy efficiency and decrease energy consumption in buildings. Many Nano products are a promising candidate for building thermal insulation and increasing the building’s efficiency. This paper aims to reach minimum energy consumption by investigating Nanomaterials thermal performance on a building’s envelope in a hot arid climate. An office building in Cairo, Egypt is chosen as a case study. The paper presents an empirical/applied inquiry that is based on a computer simulation using Design Builder software. Energy consumption is calculated for different cases; the base model of the office building without using nanomaterials, and several nano models using nanomaterials. The results indicate that the use of Nanomaterials can enhance the thermal performance of the office building and save about 13.44 % of the annual energy consumption of the building.

summary Close-range photogrammetry, due to the possibilities offered by the technological evolution of acquisition tools and, above all, the relative original challenges posed to surveyors and the theory of measurements, deserve constant critical attention. The new opportunities to detect and represent reality are mostly focused on historical architecture, referring to consequent orders of magnitude and restitution scales. On the other hand, the formalization of relevant practices for very small objects is not frequently addressed. In recent tests carried out using two Dino-Lite handheld digital microscope models, polarized light digital microscopes generally used in medical and industrial fields, we proved the potential of using these imaging systems also for Cultural Heritage documentation, highlighting, however, some issues related to the depth of field and the consequent acquisition geometry. Therefore, this study aims to solve these problems, increasing the performance of microscopic photogrammetry by optimizing the acquisition procedures with the design of custom accessories for micro-photogrammetry (e.g. a calibrated plate). These developments will be carried out as part of a technology transfer agreement with the Dino-Lite company pointed to codify a protocol for high accuracy photogrammetric documentation of small artefacts.

summary This paper presents insights into the opportunities and barriers for using augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry by contextualising how their adoption is leveraged in practices. Based on a review of literature, a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was conducted with thirteen participants from AEC industries between five and thirty years of experience. Interviews were conducted face-to-face and virtually using questions focusing on participants experiences, perceptions of, and opinions about the use of AR/VR in AEC practice. Qualitative dissemination of key insights highlighted immediate and future possibilities for AR/VR, with current limitations that require future investigation from a user-centred perspective. Suggesting a XR-PACT framework, this paper frames key directions for future research to address current limitations and explore new opportunities that positively impact architecture and other professions, communities of building users.

summary Current approaches to smart cities have focused on implementing technologies to harvest and analyse data through sensors and artificial intelligence to improve urban performance from the top-down. However, cities are complex systems of interconnected layers that change at different speeds. More persistent layers, like networks and occupation, must have smartness embedded in them through smarter design processes. In recent years, there has been an increase in digital tools for urban design, applying computational design methods and data analytics strategies, enabling collaborative and evidence-based approaches that support sustainable urban design. A critical evaluation of their potential to inform design is necessary to aid practitioners to choose and adopt these novel strategies and tools in practice. This paper presents a critical review of selected data-driven design cloud platforms, focusing on data-driven urban design approaches that can enable the use of ICTs to steer cities into a smarter future from the bottom-up.

summary Augmented reality (AR) in landscape design review scenarios has become an important tool that helps designers express their designs and allows stakeholders to more easily understand how the designs will look on the actual site. This study aimed to add the reflection of a virtual design model on the surface of the water in an existing AR system, thereby providing a more complete representation of the waterfront landscape design. First, we constructed an AR system using a smartphone linked to a computer. Then, a virtual surface model was predefined manually according to the water surface area on-site. A planar reflection method was introduced to generate an accurate reflection effect in real-time. Moreover, the reflection was simulated to ripple together with the water surface, providing a visually authentic look. Thus, the virtual model was able to accurately display the real-time reflection effect on the water surface in this realistic environment. Our findings indicate that future tasks could involve the implementation of other interactive optical effects for landscape design visualization, such as refraction simulation for underwater illumination design.

Therefore, it is extremely critical to adopt a more advanced and effective method in public environments to slow down its spread until a vaccine is widely used. A smart environment in the form of IoT, also known as the architecture of IoT, consists of three layers: perception layer, network layer, and application layer. A smart environment allows data and activities that happen in this environment to be collected, processed, and shared in real-time through various sensors. It can be introduced for early detection, tracking, and monitoring of potential confirmed cases. The smart environment is considered one of the most promising approaches to face and tackle the current scenario. However, research focusing on the potential of IoT smart environment in reaction to COVID-19 is still meager. Therefore, this paper identifies the smart environments potential based on the concept of IoT architectures three layers and further discusses how IoT can be introduced in public spaces to help battle the pandemic.

summary The vast majority of children's environments are planned and organized considering the perceptions of adults. Co-design is an important tool for adding users to design process. The objective of this work is to include children in the design process of a Pocket Park, using methods and tools to support Co-design. The work was structured based on literature review, Focus Group, Culture Maker, Digital Fabrication and Prototyping. Two online synchronous workshops were held with 23 students and 2 primary school teachers. A survey indicated that the collaborative project has a great contribution in the design process of urban spaces. Promotes assertive communication between those involved, welcoming their ideas in a flexible way. It also indicates that Digital Fabrication and Prototyping equipment are important vehicles in the construction of objects that facilitate communication during the design process, such as toys present in children's daily lives. Finally, there was a rich exchange of information and learning during the design process.

summary Plenty of challenges all over the world are affecting the urban development of spaces in the cities, especially those of heritage sites; these urban spaces provide various ambiances that appeal to the senses. Although surrounded open spaces in heritage sites are full of rich, deep knowledge that plays an active role in the community perceptions, it has been recently neglected. A contribution is paid to the combination of digital technologies to help in preserving those spaces. Its integrated use could exponentially increase the effectiveness of conservation strategies of ancient buildings. GIS technology became a usual documentation tool for heritage managers, conservators, restorers, architects, archaeologists, painters, and all other categories of experts involved in cultural heritage activities. Consequently, the GIS has faced strong criticism as it is a tool for documentation without engaging in the public environment and the users’ needs; as a result, GIS cannot help in any enhancing process as it does not have any idea about the needs of the users. This paper analyses public uses efficiency in heritage public spaces in Cairene context using public participation geographic information system (PPGIS) methodology, as it gives attention to the term “user” to include the “public” incorporating the concept of “public participation” commonly used in planning. An online survey was set up, based on Google Maps, where respondents were asked to place and rate twenty-five items on an interactive map done by (ARCGIS 10.4). These items were based on the criteria of placemaking to make those spaces full of creative ambiance to be more attractive and useful to the communities. Finally, 200 valid surveys have been collected and mapped 1500 opinions have been mapped. The Results of this research show that PPGIS is an effective tool in measuring the efficiency of those heritage public spaces, which may be valuable for future planning.

summary The paper aims to analyse the parameters for dimensioning the urban block in the context of the ongoing debate over Rio de Janeiro's new Master Plan (PLC N°44/2021). The analysis focuses on three main points: (1) the definition of the block, (2) the discrepancies found in this regard in the land parcelling system, and (3) the limitations that gated communities impose on the parameterisation of the block. The paper briefly relates the role of the master plan in Brazilian urban policy. Next, it points out the arguments that emerged during the public hearings over the new proposed master plan regarding block sizing. Then, it analyses Rio's urban law framework and the literature regarding the city's road network, cul-de-sac structures and gated communities, supported by the blocks and the streets georeferenced maps available at the Rio's Municipality and the Open Street Maps platform. Finally, it discusses the analysis outcomes with the arguments that emerged during the public hearings regarding block sizing.

summary Efforts to preserve cultural heritage have continued throughout history, and currently use game technology. Serious games, with their audio-visual features make it possible for players to absorb and retain the often rather arid data of heritage. Furthermore, such technology facilitates the transmission of heritage globally amongst remote people, without the need to commute personally. Exploring the literature, we noted a lack of local game culture in Iran, and in the Middle East more broadly. This region is limited in terms of the existing global game industry, and the introduction of its culture to the world depends on the global market. This ascertains the paper's research problem: the need for more local games in the field to promote local historical culture. Hence, the paper aims to preserve and disseminate the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of its focus area, Iran’s Silk Roads and its caravanserais, by developing and testing a serious game named The Sericum Via. It has a non-linear narrative, engaging the player in a long journey visiting the Safavid caravanserais on the Silk Roads, using their detailed information. The game's text-based and strategic environment demands decision-making skills throughout the game and is challenging enough to make the player revisit the game frequently.
