summary This paper explores the impacts of the Internet of Things (IoT) on the field of interactive architecture and the ways this novel technology enables realignments toward inclusive and critical practices in the design of computational systems across different scales. Specifically, it examines how the integration of IoT in the design of architectural surfaces can encourage interaction between local and remote users and increase accessibility amongst contributors. Beginning with a survey of media facades and the superimposition of architectural surfaces with projected images, the paper outlines a historical relationship between buildings and the public realm through advancements in technology.

The paper next reveals ways in which IoT can transform the field of interactive architecture through the documentation and analysis of a project that stages an encounter between local and remote Wikipedia contributors. The installation creates a feedback loop for engaging Wikipedia in real-time, allowing visitors to follow and produce content from their interactions with the gallery’s physical environment. Light, sound, and fabric contextualize the direction and volume of real-time user-generated event data in relation to the gallery’s location, creating an interface that allows participants to dance with dynamic bodies of knowledge.

By incorporating IoT with the field of interactive architecture, this project creates a framework for designing computational systems responsive to multiple scales and expanding our understanding of computational publics.

summary This study proposes a DfMA (from design to assembly) based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and uses Iranian-Islamic Muqarnas as the case study due to their geometric modularity. In Islamic architecture, different geographic regions are known to have used various design and construction methods of Muqarnas. There are four main specifications of the Muqarnas that define to which category they belong; first, its three-dimensional shape, that provides volume. Secondly, the size of its modules is variable. Third, its specific generative algorithm. And finally, the 2-dimensional pattern plan that is used in the design. First, this study presents thus a global analytical study that drives a generative system to construct Muqarnas, through a careful balance of four specifications. In this second step, the paper reports the result of using a parametric tool, Grasshopper and parametric plugins, for creating a generative system of several types of Muqarnas. This synthetic translation aims at expanding our understanding of parametric analysis and synthesis of traditional architecture, advancing our understanding towards using parametric synthesis towards UAV-based fabrication of Muqarnas, by taking advantage of their inherent repetition and recursion.

summary PX01-Switch is a research investigation based on an internationally filed patent by the author, focused on human-robot interaction and robotic control/motion in the field of design (Poustinchi, E. 2020). Using hardware solutions, PX01-Switch enables users—with limited or no programming background, to convert any simple or complicated “offline” developed robotic operations for KUKA robots, to realtime online operational strategies without needing any additional software package or coding knowledge. Operating as a hardware plug-in, PX01-Switch—as a device, can be added to any KUKA robot with the 4th generation controller—KRC4, regardless of the robot's type and payload. PX01-Switch aims to make realtime robotic interaction more accessible to general users, by simplifying some of the advanced programming aspects of the process, at the cost of reducing the operation/interaction resolution.

summary Re-coding post-war Syria is an ongoing research and data platform, focused on innovation and collecting comprehensive, infrastructural and socioeconomic analytics, synchronization data, by using AI driven to give a more transparent image of innovating a new methodology to regenerate the future of post-war smart cities into advanced and sustainable urban environments in a smarter way (Fig. 1). The pressure to achieve a rapid Post-war smart city without clear strategy and comprehensive analysis of all aspects will cause a particularly catastrophic collapse in the interconnected social structure, services, education and health care system, leaving a long-term impact on the society. This paper presents the current status of the Research & Documentation methodology in the Data Collection phase by the objective investigations conducted through a series of local and international workshops species developed in this research called “Re-Coding“, offering consequent direct ground surveys, statistics and documentation study of the targeted areas, merging professionalism and youth power with local community to detect an open source data used as a tool to re-generate a precarious area towards a new methodology.

summary Close-range photogrammetry, due to the possibilities offered by the technological evolution of acquisition tools and, above all, the relative original challenges posed to surveyors and the theory of measurements, deserve constant critical attention. The new opportunities to detect and represent reality are mostly focused on historical architecture, referring to consequent orders of magnitude and restitution scales. On the other hand, the formalization of relevant practices for very small objects is not frequently addressed. In recent tests carried out using two Dino-Lite handheld digital microscope models, polarized light digital microscopes generally used in medical and industrial fields, we proved the potential of using these imaging systems also for Cultural Heritage documentation, highlighting, however, some issues related to the depth of field and the consequent acquisition geometry. Therefore, this study aims to solve these problems, increasing the performance of microscopic photogrammetry by optimizing the acquisition procedures with the design of custom accessories for micro-photogrammetry (e.g. a calibrated plate). These developments will be carried out as part of a technology transfer agreement with the Dino-Lite company pointed to codify a protocol for high accuracy photogrammetric documentation of small artefacts.

summary Are historiographic diagrams valid instruments for gauging the main constituent aspects of historiographic documentation of a body of architectural production? The paper aims to discuss the results obtained by algorithmic modeling and three-dimensional visualization of historiographic data. The analysis method proposes a diagrammatic approach to the research object, established from the fundamentals originally described by Zein (2020). The diagrams were created using the algorithmic modeling software Grasshopper, which allowed us to combine a precise recording of data with an original approach to its interpretation. From the data collected, Cartesian coordinates were established for the generation of curves and interpolation surfaces representative of the computed aspects of certain historiographic narratives. With wide application possibilities, the resulting algorithmic diagrams establish a new model for data analysis and visualization, which stands as a consistent alternative to other more commonly used digital bibliometric tools.

summary Plenty of challenges all over the world are affecting the urban development of spaces in the cities, especially those of heritage sites; these urban spaces provide various ambiances that appeal to the senses. Although surrounded open spaces in heritage sites are full of rich, deep knowledge that plays an active role in the community perceptions, it has been recently neglected. A contribution is paid to the combination of digital technologies to help in preserving those spaces. Its integrated use could exponentially increase the effectiveness of conservation strategies of ancient buildings. GIS technology became a usual documentation tool for heritage managers, conservators, restorers, architects, archaeologists, painters, and all other categories of experts involved in cultural heritage activities. Consequently, the GIS has faced strong criticism as it is a tool for documentation without engaging in the public environment and the users’ needs; as a result, GIS cannot help in any enhancing process as it does not have any idea about the needs of the users. This paper analyses public uses efficiency in heritage public spaces in Cairene context using public participation geographic information system (PPGIS) methodology, as it gives attention to the term “user” to include the “public” incorporating the concept of “public participation” commonly used in planning. An online survey was set up, based on Google Maps, where respondents were asked to place and rate twenty-five items on an interactive map done by (ARCGIS 10.4). These items were based on the criteria of placemaking to make those spaces full of creative ambiance to be more attractive and useful to the communities. Finally, 200 valid surveys have been collected and mapped 1500 opinions have been mapped. The Results of this research show that PPGIS is an effective tool in measuring the efficiency of those heritage public spaces, which may be valuable for future planning.

summary Short Stack is a bare minimal structure using only laminated sheets of structural metal decking for all elements of its structure and enclosure. The project operates under a simple principle. Structural metal decking is a one-way system that resists loads well in one direction, but not in the other. When this decking is stacked into rotated sections and tensioned together, the resultant sandwich of corrugated metal is resistant to loading in every direction. These sandwiches become walls, floors, and roofs to a temporary structure. The compounded effect at the edges of the rotated and cropped decking is one of filigree or an ornamental articulation. The sandwich, which is mostly hollow due to the section of the decking, provides a sense of airy lightness that is at odds with its bulky mass. The structure, therefore, teeters between being unexpectedly open and at once heavy. The economy of the project is in its uniformity and persistent singularity. By maintaining a single palette of material and using a plasma cutting CNC bed to cut each section of the decking, the structure is simply assembled. The digital intelligence that lies underneath the apparent formal simplicity of the project is two-fold. Firstly, each sheet of metal decking is different from the next. Because of the locations of bolt-holes and constant variability of rotation and cropping of each sheet, it is a project that expresses uniformity rather than articulation through discretization. Secondly, the project appears solid and monolithic but is hollowed structurally to minimize the weight of the assembly. Parametric tools are implemented to maximize material efficiencies by hollowing the interior of each sandwich for load optimization. The project is presently in prototyping and documentation and will go into construction in Spring 2021 on a site in downtown Denver.

summary During World War II, eighty-five percent of Warsaw was destroyed. After the war, the city's Old Town buildings and monuments were ambitiously reconstructed to replicate the prewar configuration - an effort dependent on a vast amount of documentation in the form of photographs, paintings, drawings, and more. Warsaw's Rynek Starego Miasta (Old Town Market Square) was a significant part of the reconstruction effort and continues to be an iconic landmark of Warsaw which exemplifies the architectural style and character of the city's past. This paper considers the way in which the Old Town Market Square can be further preserved, recreated, and newly understood through a parametric shape grammar that formalizes the characteristic facades of the historic square and subsequently generates two-dimensional elevations to celebrate this heritage.

summary Egypt lacks documentation of many of its distinguished heritage treasures, such as artifacts, buildings, monuments and sites. As for the documented component, documents remain in library shelves without much access except for specialists. Much of this documentation has disappeared as a result of neglect, damage factors and various structural repercussions, or as a result of demolition. There is no doubt about the number of heritage buildings that were demolished for city planning purposes, especially in Cairo which possesses more than a third of the traces of the Islamic civilization; a transformationthat is demonstrated by comparing scholar descriptions of the French campaign to Egypt in 1798 and photos taken from the years 1899 to 1920 and beyond, leading to loss of valuable cultural heritage. Therefore, the preservation of this heritage, with the advancement in digital technologies has become one of the important priorities at the international level to confront these problems.Some of the approaches in this regard involve 3D information modeling using either photogrammetry and laser scanning, or 3D modeling and documentation using AutoCAD or 3DMax. This paper addresses the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology in recording, documenting and imagining the reconstruction of heritage buildings, especially partially or completely destroyed heritage buildings, based on written descriptions, pictures or drawings, and the exploitation of technology in the application of virtual heritage, the reconstruction and composition of buildings, structures or artifacts virtually on the computer at fixed epochs. The aim of the paper is to provide a framework to preserve heritage at a lower cost than modern high cost methods, provide a library of its unique architectural elements, revive heritage documents of antiquities, as well as benefiting from their added value in maintenance and restoration operations, and offering data for further studies related to preservation of cultural heritage.

summary Although HBIM is nowadays a common practice in processes and activities aimed at the investigation, documentation and conservation of architectural heritage, some doubts are emerging regarding its capabilities of fulfilling architectural heritage representation and semantics requirements. In this context, this work presents Open-ArcH, a digital approach for architectural heritage representation that relies on the integration of HBIM methodology with a knowledge base developed by means of graph databases, with two major objectives: 1) it supports the formalization of the complex semantics that it is necessary for a full comprehension of the artefact, currently poorly managed by HBIM application, and 2) the openness and flexibility ensured by the graph database technology allow for its adoption in heritage investigation and conservation processes by the different actors involved, providing them with the capability of collaborating to the construction of the knowledge base of the artefact.

summary This paper investigates the role technology and neuroscience play in aiding the design process and making meaningful connections between people and nature. Using two workshops as a vehicle, the team introduced advanced technologies and Quantified Self practices that allowed people to use neural data and pattern recognition as feedback for the design process. The objective is to find clues to natural elements of human perception that can inform the design to meet goals for well-being. A pattern network of geometric shapes that achieve a higher level of monitored meditation levels and point toward a positive emotional valence is proposed. By referencing biological forms found in nature, the workshops utilized an algorithmic process that explored how nature can influence architecture. To measure the impact, the team used FaceOSC for capture and an Artificial Neural Network for micro-expression recognition, and a MindWave sensor manufactured by NeuroSky, which documented the human response further. The methodology allowed us to establish a boundary logic, ranking geometric shapes that suggested positive emotions and a higher level of monitored meditation levels. The results pointed us to a deeper level of understanding relative to geometric shapes in design. They indicate a new way to predict how well-being factors can clarify and rationalize a more intuitive design process inspired by nature.

summary The tangible and intangible heritage, defining the local identity and spirit of place, is relatively less connected. We have proposed a novel method, to enhance visitors' interests, resulting in better engagement and understandings of the heritage. A MR game was developed to create a multidimensional experience by combining intangible meaningful and creative contents, such as comics, with immersive interaction in HoloLens 2. The contents were then superimposed onto the tangible heritage on-site. A test was conducted on 22 users selected at random. The results revealed that embedding the intangible, much amplifying the details of the tangible, made the experience more dramatic, immersive and engaged, arousing users' further interests in tangible heritages. We believed the proposed method can be an effective way to better understand the tangible and intangible aspects of heritages.

summary This paper examines the relationship between designing interactive experiences based on new technologies and the process of architectural narration. It highlights the idea of rethinking a building with historical, architectural and functional value, as an experience and a journey. Referring to the historic building of the Municipal Market of Chania, Greece and using the conceptual idea of designing through narratives, it delineates the process of integrating new technologies into the process of designing a spatial and temporal experience. Exploiting Augmented Reality, we design an application implementing a digital layer with architectural and historical content, that is integrated into reality, improving the on-site visit, providing enhanced understanding of the building and introducing experiential visitor-building interaction. The application is available through mobile devices and the proposed system is evaluated by a group of users showing the positive effects of the use of interactive technologies in redesigning the experience of a space.

title SOM’s Computer Group: Narratives of women in early architectural computing

summary Cultural narratives of digital technology in architecture rely heavily upon stories of unique, almost always male, genius and often deny the collective intellectual labor of technology’s construction. These narratives are perpetuated by a historical record which does not fully address the contributions of women to the history of digital technology. Because this history is not well-documented, there is an opportunity to represent these events in a manner which is more inclusive and equitable. Toward that end, this article focuses on narratives from the SOM Computing Group (1964–1990), as a means of correcting the historical record and addressing gender equity in the profession. The interviews collected here highlight several women who helped to integrate technologies into architecture through professional experimentation and cross-disciplinary collaboration. While it is not a comprehensive history, this work represents the beginning of an agenda to produce a history of technology in architecture which better reflects the contributions of women to the digital designs of today.

summary Design tools like Grasshopper are often used to either generate novel forms, to automate certain design processes or to incorporate scientific factors. However, any Grasshopper definition has certain assumptions about design and space built into it from its earliest genesis, when the initial algorithm is set out. Correspondingly, implicit theoretical positions are built into definitions, and therefore its results. Approaching parametric design as a question of architectural, landscape architectural or urban design theory allows the breaking down of traditional boundaries between the technical and the historical or theoretical, and the way parametric design, and urban design history & theory, can be conveyed in the teaching environment. Once the boundaries between software and history & theory are transgressed, Grasshopper can be a way of testing the principles embedded in historical designs and thus these two disciplines can be joined. In urban design, there is an inherent clash between an ideal model and existing urban geography or morphology, and also between formal (qualitative) and numerical (quantitative) aspects. If a model provides a necessary vision for future development, an existing topography then results from the continuous human and natural modifications of a territory. To explore this hypothesis, the “Urban Design Representation” subject in the Master of Urban Design program at the University of Cape Town taught in 2017 & 2018 was approached “parametrically” from these two opposite, albeit convergent, starting points: the conceptual/rational versus the physical/empiric representations of a territory. In this framework, Grasshopper was used to represent typical standards and parameters of modern urban planning (for example, Floor/Area Ratio, height and distance between buildings, site coverage, etc), and a typological approach was adopted to study and “decode” the relationship between public and private space, between the street, the block and topography, between solids and voids. This methodology permits a cross-comparison of different urban design models and the immediate evaluation of their formal outputs derived from parametric data.

summary Most of the traditional studies on urban morphology are based on aerial views. However, the 2D plane model fails to describe the height information of buildings and the relation of buildings and the urban external space. An urban section is another map of an urban area. Through a series of continuous vertical urban slices, the city texture can be transformed into planar linear information containing height and width information. This paper proposes several indicators to describe a series of urban section slices and uses a three-dimensional coordinate mapping method Sectionmatrix to quantify and analyze the relation between the physical geometrical indicators and urban form from the section perspective. Through the case analysis of multiple residential blocks in Nanjing, China, the results showed that Sectionmatrix is convenient and efficient. Sectionmatrix relates the geometrical properties to the spatial characteristics of urban areas and provides a new way to classify, map and define building typologies. This new classification method reveals the tortuosity and complexity of residential blocks. By bridging the gap between quantity and form, the research also suggests other possible applications of Sectionmatrix as a control instrument and test framework for entire cities planning and design.

summary Information extracted from aerial photographs is widely used in the fields of urban planning and architecture. An effective method for detecting buildings in aerial photographs is to use deep learning to understand the current state of a target region. However, the building mask images used to train the deep learning model must be manually generated in many cases. To overcome this challenge, a method has been proposed for automatically generating mask images by using textured 3D virtual models with aerial photographs. Some aerial photographs include thin clouds, which degrade image quality. In this research, the thin clouds in these aerial photographs are removed by using a generative adversarial network, which leads to improvements in training accuracy. Therefore, the objective of this research is to propose a method for automatically generating building mask images by using 3D virtual models with textured aerial photographs to enable the removable of thin clouds so that the image can be used for deep learning. A model trained on datasets generated by the proposed method was able to detect buildings in aerial photographs with an accuracy of IoU = 0.651.

summary In this study, we developed a historical and cultural landscape simulation system for Fujisawa-juku, a post town of the old Tokaido road. A game engine was used to recreate the landscape of the past by referring to old documents to inherit the history and culture of the region. Subsequently, an enhanced system was developed for changing the representation of time, season, and weather, and another system was developed for recreating the landscape using Ukiyo-e-style rendering. The developed system was exhibited at permanent installations in public facilities and at community events, and feedback from users led to major updates to the system. With the new information, we reviewed the shape of the model of the spatial components of the system and updated it to be more accurate. The digital model of this system can be updated with information that is not possible in a real model, such as a diorama. We will generalize this system through the unitization of spatial components to create a platform for historical cultural landscape simulation systems that can be used in other regions.

summary In the field of urban architecture and design, augmented reality (AR)-based landscape visualization is useful for building consensus among stakeholders at the design stage. An integrated AR and drone method can visualize future and past landscapes from an aerial perspective but has to address the problem of occlusion, where a 3D virtual model is displayed in front of the real-world objects. In this study, we propose an AR and drone integrated landscape visualization method to handle occlusion by linking the drone's location information in the real world and the camera in the virtual world. The method uses a 3D model of an existing building, which is part of the city model, to represent the 3D model of the design target as if the target were behind the existing building in the real world. Users can use the perspective of the drone, which flies along a set route, to examine the future landscape with high accuracy, as visualized using AR with occlusion handling.
