title Subjectively Measured Streetscape Qualities for Shanghai with Large-Scale Application of Computer Vision and Machine Learning

summary Recently, many new studies emerged to apply computer vision (CV) to street view imagery (SVI) dataset to objectively extract the view indices of various streetscape features such as trees to proxy urban scene qualities. However, human perceptions (e.g., imageability) have a subtle relationship to visual elements which cannot be fully captured using view indices. Conversely, subjective measures using survey and interview data explain more human behaviors. However, the effectiveness of integrating subjective measures with SVI dataset has been less discussed. To address this, we integrated crowdsourcing, CV, and machine learning (ML) to subjectively measure four important perceptions suggested by classical urban design theory. We first collected experts’ rating on sample SVIs regarding the four qualities which became the training labels. CV segmentation was applied to SVI samples extracting streetscape view indices as the explanatory variables. We then trained ML models and achieved high accuracy in predicting the scores. We found a strong correlation between predicted complexity score and the density of urban amenities and services Point of Interests (POI), which validates the effectiveness of subjective measures. In addition, to test the generalizability of the proposed framework as well as to inform urban renewal strategies, we compared the measured qualities in Pudong to other five renowned urban cores worldwide. Rather than predicting perceptual scores directly from generic image features using convolution neural network, our approach follows what urban design theory suggested and confirms various streetscape features affecting multi-dimensional human perceptions. Therefore, its result provides more interpretable and actionable implications for policymakers and city planners.

summary In recent years, the increasing pace of urbanization is expected to increase the temperatures in urban contexts and amplify the Urban Heat Island effect. This phenomenon has a negative impact on the urbanites' thermal comfort in outdoor spaces. Modeling and simulation-based approaches can precisely calculate outdoor thermal comfort; however, they are labor-intensive and high in computational cost. This difficulty might discourage decision-makers to consider outdoor thermal comfort conditions, which can affect their strategies at the beginning stage of design. This paper aims to propose a statistical model that can predict outdoor comfort using semantic segmentation of 2D street view images. Firstly, 78 panoramic street images of selected three streets in Istanbul are used to calculate the specific object classes that have an influence on outdoor temperature using semantic segmentation. Following, the streets' outdoor thermal comfort is calculated in Ladybug/Grasshopper. Lastly, two multi-variate regression models are built using the percentages of these object classes in each image and outdoor thermal comfort in given locations on the streets. Initial results show that the proposed regression models can predict UTCI with R2=0.78 and R2=0.80, indicating the semantic segmentation can support the calculation of outdoor comfort.

summary Current approaches to smart cities have focused on implementing technologies to harvest and analyse data through sensors and artificial intelligence to improve urban performance from the top-down. However, cities are complex systems of interconnected layers that change at different speeds. More persistent layers, like networks and occupation, must have smartness embedded in them through smarter design processes. In recent years, there has been an increase in digital tools for urban design, applying computational design methods and data analytics strategies, enabling collaborative and evidence-based approaches that support sustainable urban design. A critical evaluation of their potential to inform design is necessary to aid practitioners to choose and adopt these novel strategies and tools in practice. This paper presents a critical review of selected data-driven design cloud platforms, focusing on data-driven urban design approaches that can enable the use of ICTs to steer cities into a smarter future from the bottom-up.

summary Embedded in Chinas urbanization process, the growth of gated residential estates has gradually induced severance of urban spaces, resulting in an underutilization of public amenities, a lack of walkable permeability, and congestion of traffic. Responding to these negative effects on urban development, the CPC has released a guideline in February 2016 to prohibit the development of any new closed residential areas in principle and to advocate ungated communities. In this paper, we utilized ABM simulation analysis to test different degrees of openness, the position of new entrances/openness, and pedestrian network typologies, aiming to explore feasible strategies to accommodate the new urban design agenda. A series of typical gated compounds in Beijing were selected for comparative case studies, conducted under different degrees of openness of each case and under diverse ungating modes between cases. On the basis of these analyses, we summarized a sequence of pedestrian-centric design strategies, seeking to increase the communities permeability and walkability by suggesting alternative internal and external road network design options for Beijing urban renewal. By integrating quantified simulation into the empirical method of urban design, our research can positively assist and inform urban practitioners to propose a more sustainable urbanity in the future.

summary The vast majority of children's environments are planned and organized considering the perceptions of adults. Co-design is an important tool for adding users to design process. The objective of this work is to include children in the design process of a Pocket Park, using methods and tools to support Co-design. The work was structured based on literature review, Focus Group, Culture Maker, Digital Fabrication and Prototyping. Two online synchronous workshops were held with 23 students and 2 primary school teachers. A survey indicated that the collaborative project has a great contribution in the design process of urban spaces. Promotes assertive communication between those involved, welcoming their ideas in a flexible way. It also indicates that Digital Fabrication and Prototyping equipment are important vehicles in the construction of objects that facilitate communication during the design process, such as toys present in children's daily lives. Finally, there was a rich exchange of information and learning during the design process.

summary Plenty of challenges all over the world are affecting the urban development of spaces in the cities, especially those of heritage sites; these urban spaces provide various ambiances that appeal to the senses. Although surrounded open spaces in heritage sites are full of rich, deep knowledge that plays an active role in the community perceptions, it has been recently neglected. A contribution is paid to the combination of digital technologies to help in preserving those spaces. Its integrated use could exponentially increase the effectiveness of conservation strategies of ancient buildings. GIS technology became a usual documentation tool for heritage managers, conservators, restorers, architects, archaeologists, painters, and all other categories of experts involved in cultural heritage activities. Consequently, the GIS has faced strong criticism as it is a tool for documentation without engaging in the public environment and the users’ needs; as a result, GIS cannot help in any enhancing process as it does not have any idea about the needs of the users. This paper analyses public uses efficiency in heritage public spaces in Cairene context using public participation geographic information system (PPGIS) methodology, as it gives attention to the term “user” to include the “public” incorporating the concept of “public participation” commonly used in planning. An online survey was set up, based on Google Maps, where respondents were asked to place and rate twenty-five items on an interactive map done by (ARCGIS 10.4). These items were based on the criteria of placemaking to make those spaces full of creative ambiance to be more attractive and useful to the communities. Finally, 200 valid surveys have been collected and mapped 1500 opinions have been mapped. The Results of this research show that PPGIS is an effective tool in measuring the efficiency of those heritage public spaces, which may be valuable for future planning.

summary This practice-based research presents insights into the potential and challenges for augmented and mixed reality (AR/MR) technology to enhance Australian small-to-medium (SME) custom manufacturers’ agility to overcome existing Industry 4.0 (I4.0) workforce productivity and efficiency challenges. Moreover, it seeks to understand the technology’s ability to support custom manufacturers and the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) sector transition to a more human-centric Industry 5.0 (I5.0) model, whereby the well-being of the fabricator is placed back at the centre of manufacturing processes. This qualitative study draws on interviews with eleven Australian custom manufacturing industry professionals to inform pertinent themes around fabricators’ current use and perceptions of mixed reality technology. Results indicate benefits for fabricators in reducing 2D drawing and task-related ambiguities in fabrication and assembly practices and reveal factors surrounding underutilisation. Synthesising insights and reflecting on Teixeira et al., (2021)’s XR-PACT framework, key research areas are identified for future AR/MR development centred on fabrication users’ distinct needs to improve accessibility, empower fabricators and ultimately assist the competitiveness of custom manufacturers and the AEC sector.

summary Most approaches developed to teach parametric design principles in architectural education have focused on universal strategies that often result in the fixation of students towards perceiving parametric design as standard blindly followed scripts and procedures, thus defying the purpose of the bottom-up framework of form finding. Material-based computation has been recently introduced in computational design, where parameters and rules related to material properties are integrated into algorithmic thinking. In this paper, we discuss the process and outcomes of a computational design course focused on the interplay between the physical and the digital. Two phases of physical/digital exploration are discussed: (1) physical exploration with different materials and fabrication techniques to arrive at the design logic of a prototype panel module, and (2) deducing and developing an understanding of rules and parameters, based on the interplay of materials, and deriving strategies for pattern propagation of the panel on a façade composition using variation and complexity. The process and outcomes confirmed the initial hypothesis, where the more explicit the material exploration and identification of physical rules and relationships, the more nuanced the parametrically driven process, where students expressed a clear goal oriented generative logic, in addition to utilizing parametric design to inform form finding as a bottom-up approach.

summary Desertification has made large productive landscapes in the South-west Thar desert redundant, subjected people to migration and induced a constant influx of sand into the region (Singhvi and Amal, 2014). The abundance of sand creates an opportunity to adopt an existing technique, Bio-mineralisation, to develop a sand based composite material which, when treated with a construction binder like sodium alginate, can be used for engineering purposes. The paper sets a theoretical framework to develop a fabrication mechanism with microbial-grout injections and propose the development of in-dune/underground assembly of habitable spaces. Each of the sub-components of material system, fabrication mechanism and In-dune structures are detailed, and evaluated to devise a hierarchy between them. Their interdependencies together inform design strategies, a phasing plan and global time scale for overall terrain transformation.

summary The integration of repurposed material in new construction products generates resiliency strategies that diminish the dependency on raw resources and reduce the CO2 emissions produced by their extraction, transportation, and manufacturing. This research emphasizes the need to expand preliminary data collation from pre-demolition sites to inform early design decisions. Material (data) Intelligence investigates how the merging of artificial intelligence and data analysis could have a crucial impact on achieving widespread material reuse. The first step consists of automating the process of detecting materials and construction elements from pre-demolition sites through drone photography and computer vision. The second part of the research links the resulting database with a computational design tool that can be integrated into construction software. This paper strengthens the potential of circular material flows in a digital paradigm and exposes the capability for constructing big data sets of reusable materials, digitally available, for sharing and organizing material harvesting.

summary Digital instruments are among the means of production of architecture. This improved productivity and reduced errors and inaccuracies in architectural design; however, in the case of parametric design, there is the risk of mistaking tools that may improve the overall quality of architecture for an approach that, as intrinsically scientific, guarantees quality architecture. This misunderstanding may characterise students’ first experience with parametric modelling. Therefore, a workshop has been developed as a seed to unfold the formal potentiality of parametric modelling with limited methodological bias and to inform on what to expect from parametric modelling. The workshop results show a preference for some parametric strategies over others. This tendency can be linked to those morphologies that, due to collective bias, are perceived as parametric; Consequently, the importance of working simultaneously on technical competence and cultural aspects of parametric architecture emerges as a necessity.

summary Coding and visual programming are becoming an important component of design education, with focus on algorithmic thinking, form finding, and generative design. Programming languages like Processing are increasingly explored within shape studies in architecture, thus opening unique possibilities for creative design exploration. Most pedagogical approaches that integrate coding in exploring heritage-inspired geometric patterns focus on shape grammars and rule-based design. This exploratory paper further examines the potential of traditional geometric patterns as inspiration sources for interactivity in architectural design. We discuss the process and outcomes of an undergraduate architectural computing course at the American University in Cairo, Egypt, where students implement visual programming using Processing to develop interactive architecture prototypes based on cultural heritage. Results demonstrated a variety of abstraction and translation strategies for both tangible and intangible heritage inspirations, and generation of emergent concepts for diverse architectural prototypes including urban grids, movable structures, and responsive façades.

summary Contemporary agent-based pedestrian simulations offer great potential to evaluate architectural and urban design proposals in terms of medical risks, crowd safety, and visitor comfort. Nevertheless, due to their relative computational heaviness and complicated input-parameters, pedestrian simulations are not employed during the design process commonly. Simulation results significantly impact planning decisions, especially when they are already available in the early design phases. This paper analyzes the requirements of pedestrian simulations for early planning stages, such as seamless integration into iterative and collaborative design processes, interactivity, and appropriate visualization of results. For this purpose, we combine two existing projects: a high-accuracy pedestrian simulation and the CDP//Collaborative Design Platform. To adapt the simulation method to the requirements of early planning stages, we investigate interactions that blend intuitively with the design process and enable multiple users to interact simultaneously. We simplify simulations input parameters to match the level of detail of the early design phases. The simulation model is adapted to facilitate continuous and spontaneous interactions. Furthermore, we develop visualization techniques to support initial design negotiations and present strategies for compensating computation time and giving constant feedback to a dynamic design process.

summary The project develops pre- and post-demolition digital assessment protocols in order to better inform reclaimed material implementation in new projects. The application of the protocols are demonstrated in a pavilion constructed of reused timber (Figure 1). By facilitating the data capture, analysis, identification, and characterization of available secondary raw materials, and creating database systems for pre- and post-demolition sites, it promotes gains in high quality upcycled materials for new construction projects. Modern reality capture technologies allow for collecting high density and quality Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) data, presenting the opportunity to also increase the reliability and trust in upcycled materials by data specifically structured to relevant actors.

summary With the use of the concept Central Activities Zone in the Shanghai City Master Plan (2017-2035) to replace the traditional concept of Central Business District, core areas such as Shanghai Lujiazui will be given more connotations in the future construction and development. In the context of todays continuous urbanization and high-speed capital flow, how to identify the development status and vitality characteristics is a prerequisite for creating a high-quality Central Activities Zone. Taking Shanghai Lujiazui sub-district etc. as an example, the vitality value of weekday and weekend as well as 19 indexes including density of functional facilities and building morphology is quantified by obtaining multi-source big data. Meanwhile, the correlation between various indexes and the vitality characteristics of the Central Activities Zone are tried to summarize in this paper. Finally, a neural network regression model is built to bridge the design scheme and vitality values to realize the prediction of the vitality of the Central Activities Zone. The data analysis method proposed in this paper is versatile and efficient, and can be well integrated into the urban big data platform and the City Information Modeling, and provides reliable reference suggestions for the real-time evaluation of future urban construction.

summary Precinct-level pedestrian simulation often requires moderate to high-level modelling skills with a steep learning curve, and is usually non-flexible, time-consuming and exclusive of the broader public community. Confronting these problems, our research investigates a novel and agile workflow to test precinct pedestrian behaviours by melding agent-based simulation (ABM) and responsive real-time form modelling mechanisms within accessible visualisation of city and precinct environments in a game engine, Unity 3D. We designed an agent system prototype of configurable and interoperable nodes that may be placed in an urban modelling scenario. Realtime CSG, a fast polygon-based modelling plugin, is also introduced to our workflow where users can use the evidence observed when running a scenario to quickly adjust the street morphology and buildings in response. In this process, end users are kept in the design loop and may make critical adjustments, whereby a responsive, collective, informed design agenda for our built environments can inform more detailed outcomes of pedestrian behaviour and action and promote more efficient collaborations for both professionals and local communities.

summary Recent developments in digital fabrication have made increasingly intelligent use of machine visioning and 3D scanning. These technologies enable ever-higher resolution digital models of physical material, and present opportunities for physical material to gain agency in the design process. Digital design workflows using such technologies require ever-greater computing power as the resolution of digitized models increases, and high-fidelity 3D scanning systems become cost-prohibitive, creating obstacles to widespread use. Twinned assemblage uses consumer-grade photogrammetry software, lowering the cost of equipment required, and presents a series of distillation methods that strategically reduce the fidelity of data digitally describing a physical object. Distillation methods discussed include reducing a mesh to a low-poly geometry, identifying the location and orientation of an object's largest faces, and creating 2D sections, among others. These methods can be designed intentionally to extract or highlight certain qualities in digital models, that in turn inform aggregation strategies generated through computational simulation. This paper presents several examples of such aggregations in a variety of materials, conveying benefits and challenges of the process. Such methods present opportunities for granting agency to physical materials in the design process, and for the democratized use of digitizing technologies.

summary Discussions about the participatory design for public space began to consolidate as a discipline in the 1960s, at the same time as civil rights debates and social justice were in focus. However, nowadays the reality of participation is permeated by a growing demand for online digital tools, which enable the citizen's interaction in the city design in a playful way. The aim of this article is to analyze a corpus of participatory digital interfaces aimed at the co-design of public spaces. The methodology is based on a comparative study of these platform's characteristics. The comparative analysis showed different design strategies and application characteristics of each one, and how they adapt to different participatory realities we can find.

summary As Chinese cities entering a so-called organic renewal era, building projects runs with much more constraints from high-density and high-rise surroundings. Such a situation makes the technical review in any urban planning bureau time-consuming and error-prone, which conflicts with the developers profits and citizens rights. This study introduces a preliminary system being developed for the planning bureau of Huangpu District, Shanghai. It has covered 21 code items among 44 computational ones of the local planning codes last year, which automatically generates technical reviews upon developers submissions. Due to the feasible level of BIM application in domestic projects, a set of strategic approaches, such as the standardization of CAD drawings and the reconstruction of an internal building information model, are adopted rather than developing the system on any BIM platform directly. Two examples of technical reviews about distance-checking between buildings and length-checking of facades are demonstrated, in which officers reached confidential judgments in seconds rather than several days conventionally.

summary Generative design offers the possibility to heuristically explore data-driven design iterations during the design process. This enables performance-informed feedback and the possibility for exploring viable options with stakeholders earlier in the design process. Since architectural design is a complex, nonlinear process that requires trade-offs and compromises among multiple requirements, many of which are in conflict with each other, a multi-objective solver provides a spectrum of possible solutions without converging on a single optimized individual. This enables a more informed design possibility space that is open to collaborative decision-making. This paper describes the development of a custom multi-objective generative design workflow to visualize families of possible future building typologies with a focus on the impact of site, form, envelope performance, and glazing. Three future design scenarios are generated for three urban U.S. locations projected to grow and where progressive environmental performance stretch codes have been adopted. Drivers such as plausible site, procurement, financing, value chain, and construction typology inform possibilities for built form, envelope technologies, and performance in relation to local codes, environment, and occupant health, are transformed into design inputs through urban, spatial and environmental simulation tools for a "building design generator," or a multi-objective optimizer tool that produces an array of possible building massing and schematic envelope design options. The paper concludes with pointing out some of the gaps in data of current evaluation tools, the need for interoperability across platforms, and this points to multiple trajectories of future research in this area.
