title BIM quality control based on requirement linked data

summary This article discusses a BIM Quality Control Ecosystem that is based on Requirement Linked Data in order to create a framework where automated BIM compliance checking methods can be widely used. The meaning of requirements is analyzed in a building project context as a basis for data flow analysis: what are the main types of requirements, how they are handled, and what sources they originate from. A literature review has been conducted to find the present development directions in quality checking, besides a market research on present, already widely used solutions. With the conclusions of these research and modern data management theory, the principles of a holistic approach have been defined for quality checking in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. A comparative analysis has been made on current BIM compliance checking solutions according to our review principles. Based on current practice and ongoing research, a state-of-the-art BIM quality control ecosystem is proposed that is open, enables automation, promotes interoperability, and leaves the data governing responsibility at the sources of the requirements. In order to facilitate the flow of requirement and quality data, we propose a model for requirements as Linked Data and provide example for quality checking using Shapes Constraint Language (SHACL). As a result, an opportunity is given for better quality and cheaper BIM design methods to be implemented in the industry.

summary This paper addresses the use of BIM for code verification and automatic validation of the Airports Design (AD). In Brazil, the evaluation and approval of AD are carried out by INFRAERO. Currently, designs are evaluated manually, resulting in errors and long evaluation time. To deal with this problem, a conceptual framework for automated AD assessment with Code Checking is proposed. The method used was Design Science Research, with the proposal of an artifact. The partial results show man-machine interaction as a way more efficient to evaluate the airport design process in Brazil. This man-machine interaction its leads to a mixed model evaluation, with the use of Code Checking for the less complex stages of evaluation and leaving the man responsible for evaluating those more complex, subjective and difficult to implement rules.

title A decision support tool for building design: An integrated generative design, optimisation and life cycle performance approach

summary Building performance evaluation is generally carried out through a non-automated process, where computational models are iteratively built and simulated, and their energy demand is calculated. This study presents a computational tool that automates the generation of optimal building designs in respect of their Life Cycle Carbon Footprint (LCCF) and Life Cycle Costs (LCC). This is achieved by an integration of three computational concepts: (a) A designated space-allocation generative-design application, (b) Using building geometry as a parameter in NSGA-II optimization and (c) Life Cycle performance (embodied carbon and operational carbon, through the use of thermal simulations for LCCF and LCC calculation). Examining the generation of a two-storey terrace house building, located in London, UK, the study shows that a set of building parameters combinations that resulted with a pareto front of near-optimal buildings, in terms of LCCF and LCC, could be identified by using the tool. The study shows that 80% of the optimal building’s LCCF are related to the building operational stage (o= 2), while 77% of the building’s LCC is related to the initial capital investment (o= 2). Analysis further suggests that space heating is the largest contributor to the building’s emissions, while it has a relatively low impact on costs. Examining the optimal building in terms compliance requirements (the building with the best operational performance), the study demonstrated how this building performs poorly in terms of Life Cycle performance. The paper further presents an analysis of various life-cycle aspects, for example, a year-by-year performance breakdown, and an investigation into operational and embodied carbon emissions.

summary In the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic, contactless solutions are becoming increasingly important to making buildings more resilient to the spread of infectious diseases in complementing social distancing and disinfection procedures for disease prevention. The presented study focuses on contactless technology and its role beyond automated interaction with the built environment by examining how it expedited space use and could improve compliance with sanitary norms. We introduce a conceptual framework for the intelligent operation of automated doors in an educational facility, enabled by the network of sensory devices and the application of computational techniques. Our research indicates how versatile data gathered by RFID systems, in conjunction with data extracted from occupancy schedules and sanitary protocols, can be used to enable the intelligent and context-aware application of disease prevention measures. In conclusion, we discuss the benefits of the proposed concept and its role beyond the need for social distancing after the pandemic.

summary Several research projects (Gramazio et al. 2014; Willmann et al. 2015; Helm et al. 2017; Adel et al. 2018; Adel Ahmadian 2020) have investigated the use of automated assembly technologies (e.g., industrial robotic arms) for the fabrication of nonstandard timber structures. Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

summary Machine Learning has become a significant research area in architecture; it can be used to retrieve valuable information for available data used to predict future instances. the purpose of this research was to develop an automated workflow to enhance the implementation of The Egyptian fire & life safety (FLS) code in mega projects and reduce the time wasted on the traditional process of rooms’ uses, occupant load, and egress capacity calculations to increase productivity by applying Supervised Machine Learning based on classification techniques through data mining and building datasets from previous projects, and explore the methods of preparation and analyzing data (text cleanup- tokenization- filtering- stemming-labeling). Then, provide an algorithm for classification rules using C# and python in integration with BIM tools such as Revit-Dynamo to calculate cumulative occupant load based on factors which are mentioned in the Egyptian FLS code, determine classification and uses of rooms to validate all data related to FLS. Moreover, calculating the egress capacity of means of egress for not only exit doors but also exit stairs. In addition, the research is to identify a clear understanding about ML and BIM through project case studies and how to build a model with the needed accuracy.

summary The gradual rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its increasing visibility among many research disciplines affected Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD). Architectural deep learning (DL) approaches are being developed and published on a regular basis, such as retrieval (Sharma et al. 2017) or design style manipulation (Newton 2019; Silvestre et al. 2016). However, there seems to be no method to evaluate highly constrained spatial configurations for specific architectural domains (such as housing or office buildings) based on basic architectural principles and everyday practices. This paper introduces an automatic constraint-based consistency checker to evaluate the coherency of semantic spatial configurations of housing construction using a small set of design principles to evaluate our DL approaches. The consistency checker informs about the overall performance of a spatial configuration followed by whether it is open/closed and the constraints it didn't satisfy. This paper deals with the relation of spaces processed as mathematically formalized graphs contrary to existing model checking software like Solibri.

summary The paper describes the findings of the applied research project by Institute Integrative Design (currently ICDP) HGK FHNW and ERNE AG Holzbau to design and manufacture prefabricated wooden façades in the collaborative design manner between architects and industry. As such, it is an attempt to respond to the current interdisciplinary split in the construction, which blocks innovation and promotes standardized inefficient building solutions. Within this project, we apply three innovations in the industrial setup that result in the integrated design-to-production process of individualized, cost-efficient and well-crafted façades. The collaborative design approach is a method in which architect, engineer and manufacturer start exchange on the early stage of the project during the collaborative design workshops. Digital design and fabrication tools enable architects to generate a large scope of façade variations within production feasibility of the manufacturer and engineers to prepare files for robotic production. Novel multi-robot fabrication processes, developed with the industrial partner, allows for complex façade assembly. This paper introduces the concept of digital craftsmanship, manifested in a mixed fabrication system, which intelligently combines automated and manual production to obtain economic feasibility and highest aesthetic quality. Finally, we describe the design and fabrication of the project demonstrator consisting of four intricate façades on a modular office building, inspired by local traditional solutions, which validate the developed methods and highlight the architectural potential of the presented approach.

summary The developments of digital technology applied to architecture in the recent decades has allowed for direct communication from the studio to fabrication. However, this process is typically dependent on complicated computational processes, enlarging the distance from the benefits of the traditional drawing approaches employed by architects. This research intends to explore possibilities of reenacting the drawing as a means of computational generative design which feeds automated systems of construction. By using a Cobot directed by an algorithm which reads a simple drawn curve on paper, an automated brick wall is built, as demonstrated in two exhibitions. This mixed approach allows for technology in architectural design and construction to be more accessible to a wider audience, while blurring the boundaries between concept and materialization.

summary The additive manufacturing process is gaining momentum in the construction industry with the rapid progression of large-scale 3D printed technologies. An established method of increasing the structural performance of concrete is by wrapping it with Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP). This paper proposes a novel additive process to fabricate a FRP formwork by dynamic layer winding of the FRP fabric with epoxy resin paired with an industrial scale robotic arm. A range of prototypes were fabricated to explore and study the fabrication parameters. Based on the systemic exploration, the limitations, the scope, and the feasibility of the proposed additive manufacturing method is studied for large scale customisable structural formworks.

summary In this paper we propose an automatic layout algorithm using PBD (Position-Based Dynamic) for large-scale office park planning. Typically, the organization of buildings into a layout is a labor-intensive problem, and takes up most of designers working time. Unlike Evolutionary Algorithms who has high computational cost, and GAN (Generative Adversarial Networks) whose constraints are not explicit, PBD can handle complex geometric constraints fast enough to be used in interactive environments. The high efficiency will not only accelerate the design iteration from draft to drawings, but also provide precious feasible sample for performance optimization. Furthermore, PBD is intuitive and flexible to be implemented which makes it a potential technique to be used in real design workflow.

title Using genetic algorithm to automate the generation of an open-plan office layout

summary Today, the concept of open plan is more and more widely accepted that many companies have switched to open-plan offices. Their design is an issue in the scope of space layout planning. Although there are many professional architectural layout design software in the market, in the real life, office designers seldom use these tools because their license fees are usually expensive and using them to solve an open-plan office design is like using an overly powerful and expensive tool to fix a minor problem. Therefore, manual drafting through a trial and error process is most often used. This article attempts to propose a lightweight tool to automate open-plan office layout generation using a nested genetic algorithm optimization with two layers, where the inner layer algorithm is embedded in the outer one. The result is enhanced by a local search. The main objective is to maximize space utilization by maximizing the size of the open workspace. This approach is different from its precedents, in that the location search is conducted on a grid map rather than several pre-selected candidate locations. Consequently, the generated layout design presents a less rigid workstation arrangement, inviting a casual and unrestrictive work environment. The real potential of the approach is reflected in the productivity of test fits. Automating and simplifying the generation of layouts for test fits can tremendously decrease the amount of time and resources required to generate them. The experimental case study shows that the developed approach is powerful and effective, making it a totally automated process.

summary To design sustainable architecture, theory encourages architects to rely on automated exploration processes. In practice, the problems encountered are often multicriteria and under constraint. This paper compares different constraint handling strategies, approachable to designer, for processes involving evolutionary algorithms. Four methods are tested on a case study from professional practice. Two methods rely on parametric models: the penalty function method and the use of hyperparameters. The others involve the use of generative techniques: a rule-based method and a repair algorithm that takes the form of an agent-based model. This study highlights the significant impact of the choice of the constraint management method on exploration performance. Among other results, it appears that models involving the use of generative techniques are more efficient than those using parametric models. This calls for the development of dedicated tools.

summary Among many legal processes and political issues that hinder the Land Regularization of informal urban settlements, the delay in the production of technical documents (blueprints and descriptive memorials) and the number of errors in the systematization of information stand out. Thus, this work presents an information design methodology, aiming to optimize the documentation process through Geographic Information Systems (GIS). As a result, there was an average reduction in the production time of blueprints and memorials when compared to previous experiences of standard documentation. Errors that were still persistent were found exactly in processes that were not yet automated and needed a certain degree of mechanization. Therefore, even though the legal and political challenges seem insurmountable and need to be on the agenda, it is important to project possibilities for the technical barriers to the regularization of informal settlements, to which information design can contribute.

summary The research presented in this paper focusses on the concept of “Diterial” which aims to merge digital design and fabrication technology with natural materials such as bamboo poles and raw timber. It proposes a digital workflow that uses sensing techniques to gain individual material information of natural, unprocessed construction resources and identify their individual strengths and characteristics and therefore its potential in load-carrying structures. This information is then used to develop bespoke designs and fabrication concepts, bridging the gap between unprocessed material and automated fabrication setups. Two case studies, developed to prove this concept, are described and compared. Both cases focused on the development of spatial structures using node-bar combinations of local resources.

The methodology chosen for the development of this furniture was Design Thinking and, by gathering information such as automated furniture, trends, target audience research and competitor analysis, it was possible to create an automated counter and graphical interface based on three main concepts: multifunctional, ecofriendly and connected.

summary This paper develops a design and fabrication process management platform for prototyping practice environments using a robot operating system (ROS) framework, which we refer to as a fabricating operating service (FOS). The FOS executes a sequence of fabrication workflow that goes from materials handling, positioning, fabrication simulation, executing process to parts assembling. Each work phase is considered a different activity in the execution phase and a compact printed circuit board node to send and receive physical data. These nodes are registered onto an FOS cloud master, which distributes the node-to-node communication and links up the entire sequence of the workflow map. We propose FOS given that its loose, coupled, and distributed computation framework allows the fabrication team to visualize and record data using sharable ROS package structures. The FOS provides the advantage of easily creating additional tools, configurations, and automated scripts, and it increases the fabrication capabilities by simplifying and providing solutions for future robotic-aided fabrication development.

summary This paper discusses the potentials of reinforcement learning in game engine for design, implementation, and construction of architecture. It inaugurates a new design tool that promotes a material-informed design-build workflow for architectural design and construction industries that achieves a comprehensive circular economy. As a proof of concept, it uses the project Reform Standard, a machine-learning-based searching system that designs new shell structures composed of existing wasted materials, as a demonstration to discuss how reinforcement learning, machine vision and automated searching algorithm in the game engine can promote a material-aware design and converts wastes into construction materials. The demonstrator project sorts and transforms irregular chunks of wasted broken plastics into a new form. Instead of recycling those wastes in an energy-intensive process, the game engine is capable of finding the intricacy and new machine-oriented aesthetics in those otherwise neglected wastes. Furthermore, future research directions such as robotic-aided construction are discussed by exposing the potentials and problems in the demonstrated project. Finally, the future circular strategy is discussed beyond the demonstrated tests and local uses. The standardization of material, legislation and material lifecycle needs to be comprehensively considered and designed by architects and designers during conceptual design phase.
