title Affective Cartographies for Smarter Cities

summary This paper focuses on the study of affective and digital cartographies and on relating them systematically with their design applications. The research is based on the Design Science Research strategy, through the following logical structure: (1) Problem identification; (2) Communication; (3) Definition of the objective of the solution; (4) Artifact design, development and implementation; (5) Demonstration and Evaluation. The results presented correspond to phases (1), (2) and structuring of (3). The categorization was based on the principles: (a) dynamism (dynamic vs. static), (b) responsiveness (immediate vs. non-immediate), (c) implementation domain (hard vs. soft), and (d) affective aspect (quantitative vs. qualitative). This was synthesized in a chart, which was submitted to the analysis of a group of 4 experts from a public urban planning entity, and possible applications of affective cartographies in urban projects were obtained. Those were confronted with reality from the overlapping of the problems listed with the synthesis chart, positioning such cartographies as to their vocations.

summary This article aims to present the development of a tool to analyze sunlight availability for vertical farming in buildings facades. For the elaboration of this support system, a resource-based visual programming language was used, where indicators of solar radiation, Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD) and Daily Light Integral (DLI) make up the inputs and outputs. To validate the developed system, an analysis of a residential area, located in the city of Joao Pessoa - Paraíba, was proposed. After the simulation, it was possible to observe the usability and effectiveness of the tool for analyzing of sunlight availability in urban contexts. Moreover, the achieving results can be used to provide planners with guidelines that encourage the development of public policies and legislative instruments aimed at vertical agriculture in facades.

summary This interdisciplinary work, which integrates teaching, research and extension, incorporated students from 5 Latin American universities of Architecture and different Design Degrees. The experience that was developed in the first semester of 2021, during the Covid-19 pandemic, deals with the contribution that design and digital media can make to the social problems of local communities. Through the collaborative design of artifacts, interfaces, spaces and representations that articulate the natural, the artificial and the digital, the objective was to value and make visible the natural and cultural heritage of "La Boca", a coastal neighborhood of the city of Santa Fe, located in the flood valley of the Paraná River. Innovative ideas were provided to drive sustainable development processes through proposals that rescue the knowledge and resources of the place using digital mediations. The article analyzes the conceptual bases, methodology and results of this difficult but original experience.

summary Re-coding post-war Syria is an ongoing research and data platform, focused on innovation and collecting comprehensive, infrastructural and socioeconomic analytics, synchronization data, by using AI driven to give a more transparent image of innovating a new methodology to regenerate the future of post-war smart cities into advanced and sustainable urban environments in a smarter way (Fig. 1). The pressure to achieve a rapid Post-war smart city without clear strategy and comprehensive analysis of all aspects will cause a particularly catastrophic collapse in the interconnected social structure, services, education and health care system, leaving a long-term impact on the society. This paper presents the current status of the Research & Documentation methodology in the Data Collection phase by the objective investigations conducted through a series of local and international workshops species developed in this research called “Re-Coding“, offering consequent direct ground surveys, statistics and documentation study of the targeted areas, merging professionalism and youth power with local community to detect an open source data used as a tool to re-generate a precarious area towards a new methodology.

summary Faced with the complexity of manual and intuitive management of urban rules in architectural and urban design, this paper offers a collaborative and digital human-computer approach. It aims to have an Authorized Bounding Volume (ABV) which uses the best target values of urban rules. It is a distributed constraint optimization problem. The ABV Generative Model uses multi-agent systems. It offers an intelligent system of urban morphology able to transform the urban rules, on a given plot, into a morphological delimitation permitted by the planning regulations of a city. The overall functioning of this system is based on two approaches: construction and supervision. The first is conducted entirely by the machine and the second requires the intervention of the designer to collaborate with the machine. The morphological translation of urban rules is sometimes contradictory and may require additional external relevance to urban rules. Designer arbitration assists the artificial intelligence in accomplishing this task and solving the problem. The Human-Computer collaboration is achieved at the appropriate time and relies on the degree of constraint satisfaction with fitness function. The resolution of the distributed constraint optimization problem is not limited to an automatic generation of urban rules, but involves also the production of multiple optimal-ABV conditioned both by urban constraints as well as relevance, chosen by the designer.

summary Dealing with crucial decision-making process has led to the development of many different methods of multicriteria assessments, especially optimization methodologies. This work is mainly focused on the integration of advanced computational design and digital methods, to design a complex building shape resulting in a performance-based approach through optimization methodologies. The project consists of the design of a skyscraper in Hong Kong Island made through parametrically controlled shape and evaluated respect to light and wind to reduce Urban Heat Island phenomena and enhance liveability. The aim is to find out a unique methodology that can be applied to different cases by making small adaptations regarding the parametrization and the parameters involved. The design is divided into two stages that need to arrange the methodology at different levels throughout the workflow. For this reason, it is mandatory to adapt inputs to the algorithm according to the goal. The result is a skyscraper placed in the financial district of Hong Kong, which has both the features of a Grade A Office building and can mitigate the UHI effect thanks to its particular and optimized shape.

summary This paper explores the development of Augmented Spaces that involve embedding within the built environment, digitally responsive recognition of human presence. Contemporary digital media provides the opportunity to enhance physical space with the property of immediate interaction, which results in a high level of user engagement and responsivenenss. Through the addition of digital media, emotional and reflective value can be added to the built form. If space is designed to be reactive, rather than passive, a dialogue can be established between the user/inhabitant and the environment. We report on the establishment and analysis of a set of prototype digital interventions in urban space that react to human presence. One is in a building threshold space; one an urban street. We describe the development of a digital particle system with two inputs; the first being the geometry that generates the particles and the second being the geometry that displaces the particles. The research goals that we report on are driven by three over-riding response criteria, Visceral, Behavioural and Reflective.

summary This article addresses the issue of the relationship between digital games and the development of spatial thinking. The research question is: how can digital games be used to contribute to the development of geometric and spatial skills and competencies, extremely necessary for contemporary architects and urban planners? The main objective is to highlight digital games as a possible and emerging educational resource in the era of digital culture. From a methodological point of view, the article is the result of qualitative and exploratory research, both bibliographical and empirical. The results presented, which are the result of a didactic experiment carried out with the game Minecraft, point to the adoption of digital games as powerful playful didactic tools capable of contributing to the exercise and development of spatial vision and geometric thinking in Architecture and Urbanism.

summary Based on the concepts of Sustainable Urbanism and performance-based design, this work proposes the development of a neighborhood in the city of Sao José dos Campos (SJC), Sao Paulo-Brazil. The performance-based design method was used through parametric algorithmic tools - such as Grasshopper - for construction, analysis and the urban design multicriteria optimization. Five optimization functions were used: walkability, sunset view, radiation in hot periods, minimum hours of sun exposition and maximum number of floors. The use of optimization software accommodates the numerous conflicting requirements of the model. The results obtained are a systematization of the process and a system that allows various urban solutions based on numerical performance criteria. The selected solutions achieved walkability indicators greater than 80%.

summary The paper aims to analyse the parameters for dimensioning the urban block in the context of the ongoing debate over Rio de Janeiro's new Master Plan (PLC N°44/2021). The analysis focuses on three main points: (1) the definition of the block, (2) the discrepancies found in this regard in the land parcelling system, and (3) the limitations that gated communities impose on the parameterisation of the block. The paper briefly relates the role of the master plan in Brazilian urban policy. Next, it points out the arguments that emerged during the public hearings over the new proposed master plan regarding block sizing. Then, it analyses Rio's urban law framework and the literature regarding the city's road network, cul-de-sac structures and gated communities, supported by the blocks and the streets georeferenced maps available at the Rio's Municipality and the Open Street Maps platform. Finally, it discusses the analysis outcomes with the arguments that emerged during the public hearings regarding block sizing.

title COVID-19 and the City: An Analysis of the Correlation between Urban and Social Factors and COVID-19 in Fortaleza, Brazil

summary The COVID-19 pandemic has been the biggest sanitary crisis humanity has ever faced, the virus has contaminated 662.717.929 people worldwide and killed 6.701.270 people. However, these numbers were not distributed equally at international, national or urban scale. In Fortaleza, Brazil, city studied in this paper, data from 2021 and 2022 epidemiologic reports suggest a contamination pattern that starts in neighborhoods with higher Human Development Index (HDI) and then goes to lower HDI neighborhoods, however, throughout all of this cycle, low HDI neighborhoods tend to have a higher lethality rate. These facts raised the hypothesis that those neighborhoods have specific urban and social factors that affect the capacity to respond and prevent COVID-19. The main objective of this paper is to identify the correlation of some urban and social factors with COVID-19 data. To achieve that, the authors selected seven variables (access to water rate, literacy rate, waste collection rate, population density, access to electric energy rate, sanitation rate and average monthly income) to correlate with four COVID- 19 indicators (total number of cases, total number of deaths, contamination rate and lethality rate). For this, it was chosen to apply Spearman’s correlation coefficient and for the calculation the statistical software Jamovi was used. The results show that the literacy rate, the access to electric energy rate and average monthly income have a positive correlation with the contamination rate, however these same variables have a negative correlation with the lethality rate.

summary COVID-19 was a sanitary crisis of international impact. However, its effects weren’t experienced equally. In Fortaleza, epidemiological reports (2021;2022) point to different infection patterns between high Human Development Index (HDI) and low HDI neighborhoods, which surfaced the hypothesis that certain territories’ characteristics could correlate to COVID-19 data. This article describes a phase of a three-phase research, whose objective is to identify correlations between urban and demographic (UD) data to COVID-19 data. To this, a literature review was done to select seven UD variables and four COVID-19 ones, then, Spearman’s correlation was applied in four pandemic time frames (TF). Results show that literacy rates, monthly income and energy have either low or moderate positive correlations with contamination rates in most TF. However, they’ve shown low or moderate correlations with lethality rates in three TF. Population density showed low positive correlations to either lethality rates or total number of deaths in three TF.

summary Nowadays, ICT-based participatory design methods, techniques and tools are increasingly used across the globe. A majority of these are employed in high-income “developed” countries with advanced democratic systems which aim at including citizens; desires, needs, proposals as valuable input in city-making processes. In contrast, in the Global South, only a limited number of ICT-based practices aim to empower the citizens in urban design and planning at higher instances. There is a need for deeper research into how citizens can be involved in urban design in developing countries like Turkey situated in between the Global North and the South. In this context, this research will focus on Istanbul, Turkey as a key case. Different than the developed world context, enabling ICT-based participation in Turkey has a wide range of challenges. Among those are the lack of open and governmental data and transparency, the unwillingness of the policymakers to promote and employ participatory design, top-down approaches are the other weak points of these countries. Responding to these challenges, the aims of this study are: 1) to critically address the weaknesses and requirements of existing urban development practices in developing countries with a focus on Turkey, Istanbul and 2) to discuss the possible potentials of ICT-based participation tools and techniques to involve citizens in city-making processes.

summary The following paper talks about the studio project [Symbios]City, which is developed as a design research project in 2020–2021 Schumacher’ studio on social ecology of the graduate program in Architectural Association’s design research lab. The project aims to create an assemblage of social ecologies through a rich but cohesive multi-authored urban district. The primary ambition is to generate an urban area with a characterful, varied identity, that achieves a balanced order between unity and difference avoiding both the sterile and disorienting monotony of centrally planned modernist cities and the (equally disorienting) visual chaos of an agglomeration of utterly unrelated interventions as we find now frequently. Through a thorough research process, our project evolves mainly out of three principles that are taken into consideration for the development of our project: topological optimization, phenomenology, and ecology. By “ecology”, we understand it as a living network of information exchange. Therefore, every strategy we employ is not merely about reacting to the weather conditions, but instead it is an inquiry into the various ways we can exploit the latter, a translation of the weather conditions into spatial and programmatic properties. [Symbios]City therefore aims at developing a multi-authored urban area with a rich identity that achieves a balance between the various elements. [Symbios]City began formally from topological optimization, developed based on studies on ecology, and concluded the design following our phenomenological explorations, aiming at a complex design project that unifies the perception of all scales of design: from the platform to the skyscrapers.

summary With the use of the concept Central Activities Zone in the Shanghai City Master Plan (2017-2035) to replace the traditional concept of Central Business District, core areas such as Shanghai Lujiazui will be given more connotations in the future construction and development. In the context of todays continuous urbanization and high-speed capital flow, how to identify the development status and vitality characteristics is a prerequisite for creating a high-quality Central Activities Zone. Taking Shanghai Lujiazui sub-district etc. as an example, the vitality value of weekday and weekend as well as 19 indexes including density of functional facilities and building morphology is quantified by obtaining multi-source big data. Meanwhile, the correlation between various indexes and the vitality characteristics of the Central Activities Zone are tried to summarize in this paper. Finally, a neural network regression model is built to bridge the design scheme and vitality values to realize the prediction of the vitality of the Central Activities Zone. The data analysis method proposed in this paper is versatile and efficient, and can be well integrated into the urban big data platform and the City Information Modeling, and provides reliable reference suggestions for the real-time evaluation of future urban construction.

summary Precinct-level pedestrian simulation often requires moderate to high-level modelling skills with a steep learning curve, and is usually non-flexible, time-consuming and exclusive of the broader public community. Confronting these problems, our research investigates a novel and agile workflow to test precinct pedestrian behaviours by melding agent-based simulation (ABM) and responsive real-time form modelling mechanisms within accessible visualisation of city and precinct environments in a game engine, Unity 3D. We designed an agent system prototype of configurable and interoperable nodes that may be placed in an urban modelling scenario. Realtime CSG, a fast polygon-based modelling plugin, is also introduced to our workflow where users can use the evidence observed when running a scenario to quickly adjust the street morphology and buildings in response. In this process, end users are kept in the design loop and may make critical adjustments, whereby a responsive, collective, informed design agenda for our built environments can inform more detailed outcomes of pedestrian behaviour and action and promote more efficient collaborations for both professionals and local communities.

summary Children's playgrounds or also called playgrounds are open spaces, the basis for children's recreation. Important for the inclusion and mobility of visually impaired children in the social environment, through inclusive urban facilities that stimulate new experiences for their cognitive development. In this context, the use of Co-design with visually impaired people, in the design processes of children's playgrounds, assumes an importance for an inclusive project based on their experiences. Thus, it aimed to promote a project together, to provide more comfort and safety to users. It presents as main results as better colors, materials and types of toys for children with visual impairment to be competent in a playground including from the application of methods, tools and resources in the Co-design process.

summary In this study, a tsunami evacuation simulation system was developed using a game engine and open data to reflect the conditions of a local emergency situation at low cost. Chigasaki City, which is a heavily populated urban area and tourist destination along the coast of Japan, was selected as the target area for this study. A total of 20 simulations were conducted using 20,000 evacuation agents categorized as child, adult, or elderly residents or visitors randomly placed on the road surface in the target area. The simulation results indicate that a 10.60% agent damage rate may occur for a tsunami of height 10 m. In lowland areas where the river flows inland, tsunamis were observed to move up the estuary, trapping agents between the river and the coast. In such inland areas, several areas with no tsunami evacuation buildings were observed. Thus, the low-cost simulations provided by the proposed system can provide necessary support for planning and designating appropriate tsunami evacuation buildings in disaster-prone areas.

summary In the field of urban architecture and design, augmented reality (AR)-based landscape visualization is useful for building consensus among stakeholders at the design stage. An integrated AR and drone method can visualize future and past landscapes from an aerial perspective but has to address the problem of occlusion, where a 3D virtual model is displayed in front of the real-world objects. In this study, we propose an AR and drone integrated landscape visualization method to handle occlusion by linking the drone's location information in the real world and the camera in the virtual world. The method uses a 3D model of an existing building, which is part of the city model, to represent the 3D model of the design target as if the target were behind the existing building in the real world. Users can use the perspective of the drone, which flies along a set route, to examine the future landscape with high accuracy, as visualized using AR with occlusion handling.

summary Smart Growth is a fast-growing urban design and planning movement developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These regulations control urban morphologies such as building form, position, façade configurations, building materials, road configurations, which have an explicit association with the microclimate and outdoor comfort. This paper presents an urban modeling and simulation framework that can represent the urban morphology and its impact on microclimate shaped by Smart Growth. First, we created urban models using custom parametric objects and a building component library in BIM. Then we integrated parametric BIM and multiple performance simulations, including wind analysis, solar accessibility, and energy use. For implementation, a case study was carried out using two Smart Growth regulations in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The paper elaborates on the findings from simulation results, challenges in implementation, and limitations of the proposed framework to manage a large number of regulation variables in simulation.
