summary There is little research on the possibilities and limitations of digital design, prototyping and manufacturing of architectural components inspired by microscopic plant structures. The hypothesis was that "prototypes of autonomous responsive cell panels can be produced using digital manufacturing by addition and robotics. The objective was to determine the possibilities and limitations of the design, prototyping and manufacture of a responsive cell prototype inspired by the microscopic plant structures of the peel of fruits of Annona Cherimola, Mill and Annona Squamosa, L. (atemoia), Mauritia Flexuosa (buriti), Attalea ssp (babassu coconut), Annona Muricata (soursop) and Annona Squamosa (pine cone or conde fruit). Autonomous responsive cells inspired in plant structures can be produced. But the autonomous responsive cell controlled for sensor-presents itself as an alternative to automatic orientation toward a natural (sun) or artificial lighting source.

summary The biocolonisation of urban building surfaces by mosses is a ubiquitous and naturally occurring phenomenon that encapsulates immense ecological value for both current and future challenges of life in cities. The miniature ecosystems facilitated by mosses capture atmospheric pollutants and maintain local biodiversity by providing shelter and nutrients for a highly diverse set of organisms across all kingdoms of life. Early establishment and growth of bryophyte communities appear to be influenced by a dynamic mix of biotic and abiotic factors, while environmental cues modulate physiological responses and biochemical exchanges. A prototype monitoring device was designed to measure carbon dioxide uptake under variable light, humidity, and temperature conditions during a 3-week experiment. By providing a non-destructive tool for understanding and visualising the impact of environmental variables on photosynthetic behaviour, the device contributes to a biocentric design practice, where an organism’s ecological needs begin to drive the development of bioreceptive micro-environments.

summary Life is getting digital more than ever as technology improves. While the Internet is responsible for two percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, it is underestimated as a pollutant. Since public awareness is one of the most important preservation methods, it can contribute to protecting the environment from carbon emissions by raising people's understanding. In this regard, serious games, as a type of gamification transmitting educational content besides entertainment, immerse the player in enjoyment while teaching them a specific topic or enhancing their skills in a field. This study proposes a serious game, taking the digital unseen carbon footprint and its effects on the landscape into the topic. The game considers SDG goals provided by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. In this regard, the research uses SDGs 4 and 7 by providing quality education for all and access to sustainable energy by changing people's everyday habits.

summary Our everyday environment plays a significant role in shaping our social and emotional interactions. It has been empirically evidenced that natural daylight mitigates depression, insomnia, and other disorders (Weber, 2022). This resonates with the fact that individuals with disrupted circadian rhythms are more susceptible to mental health perturbations (Menculini et al., 2018). The current investigation delves into the correlation between luminosity and spatial configuration within the Guillermo Grantt Benavente Psychiatry Service in Concepción, Chile. The contention is that proficient spatial connectivity and exposure to natural daylight can potentially enhance therapeutic dimensions. The overarching objective is to comprehend this nexus for formulating an architectural design methodology. Specific objectives encompass: 1. Defining the communal spaces under scrutiny; 2. Analyzing luminosity and spatial attributes. The methodological approach encompasses a hybrid framework encompassing interviews, spatial analysis, and illuminance measurements. An intricate interrelationship among preferred spaces, illuminance, and spatial characteristics is anticipated.

title Fuzzy 3D Fabrics & Precise 3D Printing - Combining research with design-build investigations

summary We present a synergetic combination of two previously separate process technologies to create novel lightweight structures. 3D textiles and 3D printing. We will outline the development of a novel material system that consisted of flexible and foldable 3D textiles that are combined with stiff, linear 3D printed materials. Our aim is to produce material-reduced lightweight elements for building applications with an extended functionality and recyclability. Within an ongoing research project (6dTEX), we explore a mono-material system, which uses the same base materials for both the filament for 3D printing and the yarn of the fabrication of the 3D textiles. Based on preliminary 3D printing tests on flat textiles key process parameters were identified. Expertise has been established for 3D printing on textiles as well as for using printable recycled polyester materials (PES textile and PETG filament. Lastly for 3D printing on non-combustible material (alkali-resistant (AR) glass textiles and for 3D concrete printing (3DCP). The described process- knowledge facilitates textile architectures with an extended vocabulary, ranging from flat to single curved and folded topologies. Whereas the foundations are laid in the research project on a meso scale, we also extended our explorations into an architectural macro scale. For this, we used a more speculative design-build studio that was based on a more loose combination of 3D textiles and 3D printed elements. Lastly, we will discuss, how this first architectural application beneficially informed the research project.

summary Despite the complexity of parametric modeling, it is possible to apply it in educational context with a simpler approach. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the use of active methodologies in education. Gamification, particularly, should be emphasized regarding its association with parametric modeling. Post-pandemic scenario made possible the reinsertion of traditional practices, thus adding successful learning methods from online teaching. This paper aims to compare the adoption of parameterization and gamification to teach Descriptive Geometry on both teaching scenarios: online and presential. Two experiments were implemented to four Technical Drawing classes - A and B (2021), C and D (2022) -, in high school and technician level. The quantitative results addressed to the efficiency of parametric modeling as a didactic tool, and the qualitative results indicated that the students accepted the experiences of parameterization and gamification, on both scenarios. Nevertheless, there were subtle differences between the results from online and presential scenarios.

summary New media platforms and mapping tools are created by digital communities, and their representations influence public opinion. Crowdsourcing platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Google search engines and Maps have no such limitations or boundaries as in the physical space, these platforms are creating new virtual public places. To assess and forecast the accessibility and aesthetic issues of urban spaces in Istanbul, text and image data from Google Maps were employed. In this study, we searched at the reviews of certain public/semi-public places by using text mining and image analytics tools. Recently designed or renovated 11 public buildings and open places were chosen. The main findings of this exploratory study are that; 1) the level of being public can be understood from the crowdsourcing, 2) image analytics of crowdsourced visual data can assist to identify the aesthetic quality, and 3) the accessibility capacity of public spaces can be identified.

summary This project presents a novel method of spatially printing clay lattices by controlling fabrication parameters such as the printing head speed and the material extrusion rate following a 3D-choreographed toolpath. Spatial printing refers to the unrestricted movement of the printer nozzle in three axes (x, y, z) when extruding material, as opposed to the conventional 2-axis layer-by-layer deposition that is very slow and results in increased operational costs. This method—enhanced with an integrated industrial laser displacement sensor to collect deflection data subsequently used to calibrate the next layer toolpath geometry in real- time—works optimally with carbon-fiber reinforcements for increased tensile performance.

summary Hotspot creation is one of the most important modules within virtual environments which helps show the navigators of these environments some information about semantic elements within it and facilitate the navigation between the virtual spaces. In this paper, a system for automatic hotspot proposals and creation in virtual environments is proposed. The system uses computer vision modules to automatically propose hotspot locations in addition to identifying and creating these hotspots with candidate labels. Two main modules used in the system are object detection and scene segmentation. The scene segmentation helps give candidate hotspot areas and provides an overall understanding of the semantics of the virtual environment. The object detection module also uses pretrained deep networks for automatic hotspot creation over these objects. The system helps speed up the hotspot creation process and offers a tool for virtual environment users and creators.

summary This article synthesizes the result of a systematization and analysis of videomapping carried out in “Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada” in the period 2014-2022, taking as a source the information collected in the investigation "(Lafluf, 2020), it is updated by integrating new experiences and new interpretations. Likewise, the article aims to provide a structured way to describe and analyze videomapping projects, keeping in mind three axes: context project, mapping project, and mapping event. These categories refer to a strategy developed within the methodological framework of the master's thesis "Videomapping en los proyectos del Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada de la Facultad de Arquitectura Diseno y Urbanismo (Udelar). Caso de estudio: Videomapping Patrimonio Anglo" (Lafluf, 2020) as well as in other investigations to describe the videomapping. Once this set of videomapping projects has been presented, general considerations are made to analyze the surveyed cases.

summary Almost every technological and industrial concept changes the built environment around us and our understanding of the architectural practice. Recently, Hyperautomation, an all-encompassing digital transformation with the help of advanced techniques, has been presented as a game-changing concept that can affect any industry. Despite this promising concept, the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry seems far behind the latest technological breakthroughs and automation of processes compared to other industries. Therefore, this study provides a better understanding of adopting the novel Hyperautomation paradigm in the AEC industry by focusing on Industry 4.0. In this context, the first section introduces the Construction 4.0 concept, its counterpart in the AEC industry, briefly mentions fundamental approaches and indicates the need for a framework. The second section introduces an integrated framework throughout the entire building life-cycle for design and construction processes and exemplifies the stages in an autonomous system and their interrelationships. The third section presents a hypothetical case, a distributed reconfigurable robotic assembly system, and the assembler ‘HookBot’ to understand the relationships in an autonomous system better. The last section discusses the place of the Hyperautomation paradigm in architecture.

summary In recent years, generative models have been rapidly transforming into a broad field of research, and artificial intelligence (AI) works are increasing. Since deep learning technologies such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) providing synthesized new images are becoming more accessible, researchers in the design and related fields are very much interested in adapting GANs into practice. Especially, StyleGAN has a strong capability for image learning, reconstruction simulation, and absorbing the pixel characteristics of images in the input dataset. StyleGAN also produces similar imitation outputs and summarizes all the input data into one "average output". The study aims to reveal the potential of these outputs that can be employed as a visual inspiration aid for designers. This article will discuss the outputs of the experiments, findings, and prospects of StyleGAN.

summary COVID-19 was a sanitary crisis of international impact. However, its effects weren’t experienced equally. In Fortaleza, epidemiological reports (2021;2022) point to different infection patterns between high Human Development Index (HDI) and low HDI neighborhoods, which surfaced the hypothesis that certain territories’ characteristics could correlate to COVID-19 data. This article describes a phase of a three-phase research, whose objective is to identify correlations between urban and demographic (UD) data to COVID-19 data. To this, a literature review was done to select seven UD variables and four COVID-19 ones, then, Spearman’s correlation was applied in four pandemic time frames (TF). Results show that literacy rates, monthly income and energy have either low or moderate positive correlations with contamination rates in most TF. However, they’ve shown low or moderate correlations with lethality rates in three TF. Population density showed low positive correlations to either lethality rates or total number of deaths in three TF.

summary In this paper, two case studies on digital modeling for robotically-enabled marble carving are presented. In the first one, an interactive, gesture-based modeling framework was developed to sculpt a large, undulating and ultra-thin marble surface. On the second one, an integrated 3D-scanning-to-milling solution was created, in order to groove a superficial pattern on the surface of a discarded marble boulder. The cases evidence the power of tangible interaction to serve as input to novel digitally-aided marble sculpting processes, and the capacity of integrated generative design workflows to create consistent solutions to variable conditions, in this case, with a particular focus on sustainability and reclaiming of scrap materials.

summary A technique for architectural massing studies in Mixed Reality (MR) is described. Generative Adversarial Networks let an object appear to have a different material than it actually has. The benefits during design are twofold. From one side the congruence between shape and material are subject to verification in real-time. From the other side, the designer is liberated from the usual restrictions and biases as to shape that are inevitable due to the mechanical properties of a mock-up. This is referred to as artificial intelligence assisted MR (AI-A MR) in this work. The technique consists of two steps: based on preparing synthetic data in Rhino/Grasshopper to be trained with an image-to- image translation model and implemented to the trained model in MR design environment. Next to the practical merits, a contribution of the work with respect to MR methodology is that it exemplifies the solution of some persistent tracking and registration problems.

summary Extended Reality (XR) technologies have the potential to help and improve the teaching and design process in Architecture and Urbanism, as they offer different ways of perceiving and representing space and various functionalities. Therefore, it is important to systematize scientific production in this area. This research aims to identify and analyze the main applications of XR in teaching and in the design process in Architecture and Urbanism, as well as its benefits and limitations. A systematic literature review of publications on CumInCAD and SBTIC, from 2015 to 2022, was carried out. The results show the growing emphasis of XR as a medium that offers benefits both for teaching and design practice. However, there are still limitations to be overcome to make XR more inclusive. As a contribution, a greater understanding of how XR has been applied in teaching is provided along with a reflection on its impact on the means of representation in the design process.

summary The large-span wooden construction project uses a sophisticated tenon joinery system to overcome the limitation on the size of the material. However, making a clear layout and knowledge transfer is an important issue under the complex structure. This research takes "Dougong‚ as an example to sort out the possible knowledge graph of Dougong. Through the geometric feature classification and the relationship between the joints, we found that the structural relationship of traditional Dougong is like the branch system of the L-system. But it has the characteristic of horizontal connections that make Dougong restrain one another more firmly. Besides a graphical representation of the complex joinery system, it can quickly visualize and adjust the type changes and therefore provide another network related to the building model. Besides computational geometry to traditional wood structure analysis and automation, we also explored two new types of Dougong from a perspective of the traditional wooden structure. So, in this research, we developed automatic digital tools for Dougong and propose new applications of Space Syntax, attempting to break through the existing limitations of Dougong.

summary This article presents the implementation of the Cartografia da Cultura online collaborative platform in the city of Campo Grande, MS, Brasil, which sought to expand participation and collaboration in the processes of building public policies.The platform is the main experiment of the doctoral research entitled From the participatory city to the collaborative city: sharing decisions on on-line platforms, defended in September 2022. We present the criteria that guided us in the design and construction of the platform, supported by a collective work that lasted 20 months, whose main collaborator was the Municipal Cultural Forum of Campo Grande. The main functionalities of the platform are the mapping of cultural agents, dissemination of the agenda of events and environment for debate and decision-making, all with data fed by registered collaborators. Over 10 months, we observed the appropriation and use of the platform by the local community, in which the systematization of data allowed revealing the results and contributing to discussions related to online platforms for citizen participation.

summary A visibility algorithm has been developed and practiced on the iconic towers of Istanbul from various locations with multiple observation points. This research accepts visibility as a binary subject and limited subjective perspectives. Using visibility as a design strategy is a prevalent technique for designers. Applying visibility aspects to the design is an outcome of psychological research in the 60s. Benedikt was the first person who added visibility to his architectural studies. Visibility refers to being able to see or be seen from a distance. This research accepts and practices this definition on two iconic towers of the city of Istanbul with the model MoV (Model of Visibility) developed. The implantation of the developed model is represented with the voxel modeling method. To be able to provide volumetric data, voxel-based representation was explicitly applied to the digital models of iconic towers. This representation model aimed to illustrate and quantify the visible and non-visible areas according to the location of the observation point’s visibility range.
