summary Floor plan interpretation and reconstruction is crucial to enable the transformation of drawings to 3D models or different digital formats. It has recently taken advantage of neural-based architectures, especially in the semantic segmentation field. These techniques perform better than traditional methods, but the results depend mainly on the data used to train the networks, which is often crafted for the specific task being performed, making it hard to reuse for different purposes. In this paper, we conduct a literature survey on the existing datasets for floor plan analysis, and we explore how information regarding door placement and orientation can be recovered without having to change the initial data or model. We propose a two-step recognition method based on image segmentation followed by classification of cropped zones to allow data augmentation during training. In the process, we generate a dataset consisting of 35000 annotated door images extracted from an existing dataset.

summary In this paper, we discuss the potential of using virtual reality collaborative platforms for e-learning to improve the quality of online education. First, we explore the characteristics of existing online platforms that can be used for e-learning. Second, we present a method for creating a Virtual Reality Collaborative Environment (VRCE) for e-learning using an online platform, namely FrameVR. Third, an experiment is conducted to investigate participants' behavioural and emotional engagement when using Zoom and the VRCE for online learning. Valid survey data from twenty-two participants are analysed. Then, participants are interviewed about their perceptions of using a VRCE for e-learning. The results of the experiment confirm that using a VRCE can increase student engagement, especially emotional engagement compared to Zoom. However, the findings also suggest that there is still room for improvement in the use of VRCE for e-learning. Therefore, further suggestions are made on the drawbacks of VRCE to improve the user experience. This paper provides insight into incorporating VRCE to enhance the e-learning experience and contribute to the development of online education.

summary This research aims to compare two experiential learning methods’ effectiveness for (1) a deeper understanding of structural behaviour, and (2) skills to design architectural forms that are structurally informed. A course was planned to investigate the effect of the type and order of the two teaching units: (1) guided experiments on a parametric design model, and (2) parametric design of a tower and custom experiments using Grasshopper and Karamba. Results indicate that the group that started with the experiments learned to ask the relevant questions by experimenting with the appropriate parameters that helped them to find the structural principles and apply them during their design phase. The group that started with the design were lost in the structural concepts and in identifying the meaningful parameters to test for. However, after the experiment was completed, this group could make a knowledge transfer. Acquisition of structures knowledge may require the experience of multiple situations while the application of this knowledge may involve selecting the relevant structural experience with the architectural form-finding process. In the future, a proposed experiential learning method will be compared with an instructive learning approach of structural systems for architecture students.

title D-ART for collaboration in evaluating design alternatives

summary Evaluating design ideas is an integral part of designing built environments. It involves multiple stakeholders with diverse backgrounds reviewing design solutions by studying their form and performance data. Although there are computational systems for supporting evaluation tasks, they are either highly specialised for designers or configured for a particular workflow with limited functions. We developed a Design Analytics method aiming at a collaborative and data-driven evaluation of alternatives in the design-evaluate-feedback cycle. Adopting this approach, we introduce D-ART as a prototype system composed of customisable Web interfaces for presenting design alternatives, enabling stakeholders to participate in data-informed discourse on alternatives and providing feedback to the design team. Its system design considers requirements gathered through literature review, critical analysis of the existing systems and collaboration with our industry partners. Finally, we assessed D-ART’s design through an expert review evaluation, which generally reported positive results on the system’s goals.

title AI Urban Voids: A Data-Driven Approach to Urban Activation

summary With the development of digital technologies, big urban data is now readily available online. This opens the opportunity to utilize new data and create new relationships within multiple urban features for cities. Moreover, new computational design techniques open a new portal for architects and designers to reinterpret this urban data and provide much better-informed design decisions. The “AI Urban Voids'' project is defined as a data-driven approach to analyze and predict the strategic location for urban uses in the addition of amenities within the city. The location of these urban amenities is evaluated based on predictions and scores followed by a series of urban analyses and simulations using K-Means clustering. Furthermore, these results are then visualized in a web-based platform; likewise, the aim is to create a tool that will work on a feedback loop system that constantly updates the information. This paper explains the use of different datasets from Five cities including Melbourne, Sydney, Berlin, Warsaw, and Sao Paulo. Python, Osmx libraries and K-means clustering open the way to manipulate large data sets by introducing a collection of computational processes that can override traditional urban analysis.

summary Understanding the relationships between individuals and the urban streetscape is an essential component of sustainable city planning. However, analysis of these relationships involves accounting for a complex mix of human behaviour, perception, as well as geospatial context. In this context, a comprehensive framework for predicting preferred streetscape characteristics utilizing deep learning and geospatial techniques is proposed. Geotagged social media posts and street view imagery are employed to account for individual sentiment and geospatial context. Natural Language Processing (NLP) and computer vision (CV) are then used to infer sentiment and model the visual environment within which individuals make posts to social media. An application of the developed framework is provided using Instagram posts and Google Street View imagery of the urban environment. A spatial analysis is conducted to assess the extent to which urban attributes correlate with the sentiment of social media postings. The results shed light on sustainable streetscape planning by focusing on the relationship between users and the built environment in a complex urban setting. Finally, limitations of the developed methodology as well as future directions are discussed.

summary This paper aims to improve the usability of qualitative urban big data sources by utilizing Natural Language Processing (NLP) as a promising AI-based technique. In this research, we designed a digital participation experiment by deploying an open-source and customizable asynchronous participation tool, "Consul Project‚, with 47 participants in the campus transformation process of the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). At the end of the data collection process with several debate topics and proposals, we analysed the qualitative data in entry scale, topic scale, and module scale. We investigated the impact of sentiment scores of each entry on the overall discussion and the sentiment scores of each introduction text on the ongoing discussions to trace the interaction and engagement. Furthermore, we used Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modelling to visualize the abstract topics that occurred in the participation experiment. The results revealed the links between different debates and proposals, which allow designers and decision makers to identify the most interacted arguments and engaging topics throughout participation processes. Eventually, this research presented the potentials of qualitative data while highlighting the necessity of adopting new methods and techniques, e.g., NLP, sentiment analysis, LDA topic modelling, to analyse and represent the collected qualitative data in asynchronous digital participation processes.

summary This study proposes a framework for the use of mobile robots namely RIZOBots in form studies in the early phases of design. The proposed framework was tested in two experiments. An agent-based model was utilized for the movement of mobile robots, a drawing task was defined as the task. In particular, rule sets for agent-agent and agent-environment interaction were used. Light-sensitivity rules were utilized to achieve agent-environment interaction, apart from obstacle detection. This study focuses on the effects of two different zone-related states on the behavior of RIZOBot which is a configurable differential-drive wheeled robot developed by authors using off-the-shelf products and 3D printed body parts. Two zone types with very basic features are used to define environmental conditions. The traces left on the canvas, the irregularities in the movement of the robots, and the robot-environment interaction will be evaluated in the study. The results and analysis of the two selected experiments are presented and the potential of the proposed framework is discussed.

summary The objective of the project is to facilitate the perception of the distance between the technological skills built during the academic journey of the students in Visual Communication Design, and the skills demanded by the labor market. For this research, the Vision in Product (ViP) methodology was used, transferring the results to a possible 2027 scenario. We defined seven professional technological profiles which will help students in their professional insertion, and their adaption to the fast changes in the labor area. Our collaborative and interactive interface was designed to display the data obtained in the survey and the design profiles that will be most in demand in the future. The differential value of our research lies in the possibility of showing the obtained results in a collaborative interface.

summary Water availability has a key role in their process of occupation. However, accelerated urbanization had several detrimental impacts, increasing the vulnerability of urban communities. Because of the limitations of traditional planning, an alternative approach is emerging to respond to the constant changes in the landscape. Now, green infrastructure (GI), an ecosystem-based approach (EbA), is being used combined with traditional solutions to increase the resilience of the cities. In this paper, we proposed the use of an algorithm to determine the best place to implement GI. The algorithm used the inputs to develop a multi-criteria analysis capable of translating urban complexity. Results show that the GI solution can’t be efficiently implemented without context evaluation. However, the algorithm has the potential to become an informative tool in the decision-making process of urban planning.

summary This paper describes the proposal and results of a multilingual shape grammar to describe the designs of three architects, precursors of the ‘International Style’. A shape grammar is a generative process that allows the recreation of designs that follow a language. Grammars are useful mechanisms to describe patterns and generative processes that can be used for analysis or design exploration. Most grammars represent one language. This study focuses on three independent languages within the same movement. The proposed grammar is parametric and allows the independent recreation of each independent design. Its difficult application can be linked to the difficult evaluation process. This research proposes a quantitative and a qualitative method of grammar evaluation, using respectively Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and user questionnaires. The results are then discussed and assessed using hybrids that fall in between languages and help delineate parametric spaces.

summary In the next thirty years, the world's population is expected to increase to ten billion people, posing major challenges for the construction industry. To meet the growing demands for residential housing in the future, architects need to work faster, more efficiently, and more sustainably, while increasing architectural quality. The hypothetical intelligent design assistant WHITE BRIDGE, based on the methods of the 'metis' projects, suggests further design steps to support the architectural design decision-making processes of the early design phases. This facilitates faster and better decisions early in the process for a more responsible resource consumption, better mental well-being, and ultimately economic growth. Through a case study we investigate if additional information supports the understanding of these suggestions to reduce the cognitive workload of architectural design decisions on the backdrop of their respective representation. The paper contributes an approach for visualising explanations of an intelligent design assistant, their integration into paper prototypes for case studies, and a workflow for data collection and analysis. The results suggest that the cognitive horizon of the architects is broadened by the explanations, while the visualisation methods significantly influence the usefulness and use of the conveyed information within the explanations.

summary This article deals with the characterisation of robotic manufacturing systems and digital interventions adapted for the conservation and the restoration of 20th-century concrete buildings. By exploiting the potential for analysis and implementation of robotic manufacturing technologies used in the field of heritage science, two associated non- invasive, non-destructive and integrated intervention solutions are presented here, using two research approaches. Through the use of digital recording tools, digital modelling / simulation and additive manufacturing techniques, the first approach develops a direct repair process by adding material with the help of aerial robots. The second focuses on printing recyclable plastic mouldings in order to reproduce partially degraded or completely destroyed architectural details. The results of these two diverse and complementary researches, as well as their experimental approaches applied to conservation and restoration practices, aim to test the proposed robotic manufacturing- based method, regarding the criteria of transferability and methodological feasibility.

summary Romance awakens fond memories of the city. Finding out the relationship between romantic scene and urban morphology, and providing a prediction, can potentially facilitate the better urban design and urban life. Taking the Yangtze River Delta region of China as an example, this study aims to predict the distribution of romantic locations using deep learning based on multi-source data. Specifically, we use web crawlers to extract romance-related messages and geographic locations from social media platforms, and visualize them as romance heatmap. The urban environment and building features associated with romantic information are identified by Pearson correlation analysis and annotated in the city map. Then, both city labelled maps and romance heatmaps are fed into a Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) as the training dataset to achieve final romance distribution predictions across regions for other cities. The ideal prediction results highlight the ability of deep learning techniques to quantify experience-based decision-making strategies that can be used in further research on urban design.

summary Urban building energy modelling (UBEM) has great potential for assessing the energy performance of the existing building stock and exploring various actions targeting energy efficiency. However, the precision and completeness of UBEM models can be challenged due to the lack of available and reliable datasets related to building occupant and layout information. This study presents an approach that aims to augment UBEM with open-data sources. Data collected from open data sources are integrated into UBEM in three steps. Step (1) involves the generation of occupant profiles from census data collected from governmental institutions. Step (2) relates to the automated generation of building plan layouts by extracting data on building area and number of rooms from an online real-estate website. Results of Steps (1) and (2) are incorporated into Step (3) to generate residential units with layouts and corresponding occupant profiles. Finally, we make a comparative analysis between data-augmented and standard UBEM based on building energy use and occupant thermal comfort. title COVID-19 and the City: An Analysis of the Correlation between Urban and Social Factors and COVID-19 in Fortaleza, Brazil

summary The COVID-19 pandemic has been the biggest sanitary crisis humanity has ever faced, the virus has contaminated 662.717.929 people worldwide and killed 6.701.270 people. However, these numbers were not distributed equally at international, national or urban scale. In Fortaleza, Brazil, city studied in this paper, data from 2021 and 2022 epidemiologic reports suggest a contamination pattern that starts in neighborhoods with higher Human Development Index (HDI) and then goes to lower HDI neighborhoods, however, throughout all of this cycle, low HDI neighborhoods tend to have a higher lethality rate. These facts raised the hypothesis that those neighborhoods have specific urban and social factors that affect the capacity to respond and prevent COVID-19. The main objective of this paper is to identify the correlation of some urban and social factors with COVID-19 data. To achieve that, the authors selected seven variables (access to water rate, literacy rate, waste collection rate, population density, access to electric energy rate, sanitation rate and average monthly income) to correlate with four COVID- 19 indicators (total number of cases, total number of deaths, contamination rate and lethality rate). For this, it was chosen to apply Spearman’s correlation coefficient and for the calculation the statistical software Jamovi was used. The results show that the literacy rate, the access to electric energy rate and average monthly income have a positive correlation with the contamination rate, however these same variables have a negative correlation with the lethality rate.

summary This study investigates and proposes design and fabrication methods for hemp-based heat-pressed acoustic tiles. Through computational pattern generation and acoustic analysis methods, combined with CNC-milling of formwork for heat pressing and room acoustic measurements are material-geometric relations examined and described. The study results in new procedural design method for creating bespoke visual-acoustic modules and knowledge of how these hemp-based tiles can impact the acoustic environment.

summary The contagious COVID-19 pandemic made it necessary to adopt strategies to avoid contamination. COVID-19 spreads when someone is in direct contact  with small droplets and particles that contain the virus. These droplets and particles can be active on surfaces that are shared by many people, so hand sanitation became an important aspect to prevent virus contamination. However, products for hand sanitation may not be available easily everywhere. Moreover, the excessive use of products like hand sanitizers and hand soaps can cause dryness and dermatitis on certain users. This paper describes the rapid prototyping of JOI, a device for users to avoid touching doorknobs, door bolts, switchers, and call buttons.  The device was 3D printed (more than 400 units) and distributed to an academic community, which then answered a usability survey. Results show that the device is efficient to avoid the direct contact of users  and surfaces that may be contaminated.

title BIM Adoption in an Architecture and Urbanism course: analysis of the degree of maturity

summary This article aims to assess the degree of maturity of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in an Architecture and Urbanism course, identifying points of improvement and benefits, directing actions for a potential BIM implementation. The evaluation methodology investigates about Policies, Processes and Technologies of the architectural graduation course. The collection of information was done through questionnaires applied to the teaching staff. As results, it shows that BIM maturity,s level of the Institution in this course is in the ‘Defined’ level, however there are heterogeneous performances in relation to the evaluated points. It is also noticed that this result is due to the actions of a minority of teachers, not reflecting the institutionalized maturity of the entire course. On the other hand, this result indicates that efforts towards BIM adoption will start from initiatives already underway, in an environment relatively prepared for a planned insertion.

summary Within the framework of a research project on inmotic urban-microarchitecture in public spaces, this paper presents the results of a prototype analysis, based on ergonomic and universal access-criteria, as well as material, technical and technological requirements necessary for its construction in Córdoba (Argentina). The main objective is to increase the services provided while improving the interactions with users with disabilities or movements limitations, as well as older adults and children.
