title A review of advanced architectural glazing technologies for solar energy conversion and intelligent daylighting control

summary Efficient management of solar radiation through architectural glazing is a key strategy for achieving a comfortable indoor environment with minimum energy consumption. Conventional glazing consisting of a single or multiple glass pane(s) exhibits high visible light transmittance and solar heat gain coefficient, which can be a double-edged sword, i.e., it allows sufficient sunlight to enter the building interior space for passive heating and lighting; on the other hand, it can cause glare discomfort and large cooling energy consumption. Among the various advanced glazing technologies being developed, Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) glazing has a prominent position due to its ability to reduce cooling load and visual discomfort while simultaneously generating electricity from sunlight. Recent years have witnessed remarkable advances in low-concentration optics such as Dielectric based Compound Parabolic Concentrators (DiCPCs), with a growing interest in the development of Building Integrated Concentrating Photovoltaic (BICPV) glazing to improve light harvesting and electric power output. One of the challenges faced by traditional BIPV glazing systems is the lack of dynamic control over daylight and solar heat transmission to cope with variations in weather conditions and seasonal heating/cooling demands of buildings. A promising solution is to integrate an optically switchable smart material into a BIPV glazing system, which enables dynamic daylighting control in addition to solar power conversion. Thermotropic (TT) hydrogel materials such as poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) and Hydroxypropyl Cellulose (HPC) are potential candidates for hybrid BIPV smart glazing applications, due to their unique features such as high visible transparency (in the clear state), strong light-scattering capability (in the translucent state) and large solar energy modulation. This paper reviews various types of electricity-generating glazing technologies including BIPV glazing and BICPV glazing, as well as smart glazing technologies with a particular focus on TT hydrogel integrated glazing. The characteristics, benefits and limitations of hybrid BIPV smart glazing are also evaluated. Finally, the challenges and research opportunities in this emerging field are discussed.

summary This paper explores the suitability of mass customisation (MC) technologies and techniques in order to provide affordable housing solutions for Saudi Arabia. In particular, the paper analyses ten articles filtered through 1.165 publications searched by using the keywords ‘mass customisation housing or off-site construction’ in the databases Scopus, CumlnCAD, ScienceDirect, and Engineer village and categorised them based on their suitability for the Saudi Arabian context. Our findings include a comparative analysis chart evaluating workflows, tools and technologies on their suitability for the MC design and an MC workflow proposal for including parametric design and digital fabrication tools and techniques.

title Application of Immersive Technologies in the Early Design Stage in Architecture Education: A Systematic Review

summary This paper reviews existing research on the use of immersive technologies, Virtual Reality in particular, in various stages of the architectural design process. Nine research papers were systematically reviewed and analyzed. They were filtered down by using the keywords: ‘Virtual/Augmented Reality, Architectural Education, Gravity Sketch, Unity and Virtual Environments’ from two main databases that focus on digital and computer-aided design research: Cumulative Index about publications in Computer Aided Architectural Design (CuminCAD) and Elsevier's abstract and citation database (Scopus). The selection of papers was filtered down based on relevant approaches which investigate architectural design, creative thinking and teaching methodology using immersive technologies. Another criterion applied to the filtering process of the research papers is the exploration and integration process of new tools and overlapping external software to aid the existing workflow of the user. Our findings explore the evolution of immersive tools to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of virtual reality-based software and hardware, as a creative development tool in the field of education and practice. This paper also proposes a novel teaching methodology that incorporates immersive technologies in the early design phase of architectural education.

title D-ART for collaboration in evaluating design alternatives

summary Evaluating design ideas is an integral part of designing built environments. It involves multiple stakeholders with diverse backgrounds reviewing design solutions by studying their form and performance data. Although there are computational systems for supporting evaluation tasks, they are either highly specialised for designers or configured for a particular workflow with limited functions. We developed a Design Analytics method aiming at a collaborative and data-driven evaluation of alternatives in the design-evaluate-feedback cycle. Adopting this approach, we introduce D-ART as a prototype system composed of customisable Web interfaces for presenting design alternatives, enabling stakeholders to participate in data-informed discourse on alternatives and providing feedback to the design team. Its system design considers requirements gathered through literature review, critical analysis of the existing systems and collaboration with our industry partners. Finally, we assessed D-ART’s design through an expert review evaluation, which generally reported positive results on the system’s goals.

summary The main objective of this research is to develop a method that can integrate responsive and interactive architecture through the application of soft robotics on a façade. To achieve this objective, a review of the main concepts, adaptive architecture (responsive-interactive) and soft robotics was first carried out. Secondly, recent studies and research that speak of the application of soft robotics in architecture are analyzed. With the knowledge acquired in the analyzes and reference studies, together with the help of programming and computational design tools, a scalable physical prototype was developed that manages to integrate both types of adaptive behaviors (responsive-interactive) in a single hybrid robotic system (soft-rigid), demonstrating the potential of soft robotics in architecture, in this case being applied to be sensitive and act on changes in temperature produced by solar radiation.

summary Due to their recent popularity and success in fields such as engineering and business, gamification and by extension game design principles demonstrate the ability to teach complex, multi-disciplinary skills in an engaging, entertaining, and effective way. Architectural education especially introductory architectural education is a foundational and fundamental part of a budding architecture student’s career and oftentimes requires the understanding of dynamic systems, spatial reasoning, and experiential learning. The paper posits that gamification and game design principles can utilize certain components such as augmented reality, narrative design, and fun in order to create tools, gamify existing curriculum, and increase retention, engagement, and mastery of the difficult high-tech skillsets required of introductory architects. The paper focuses on reviewing and systematically analyzing research on gamification in education. In particular, it focuses on systematically reviewing and analyzing data from multiple relevant case studies chosen based on the application of technology such as augmented reality, the integration of game design, and the feasibility of gamification in educational environments. This data is examined based on feasibility, accessibility, and effects on information retention and the findings are outlined in a comparative table of methods, tools, and technologies organized based on their suitability. Ultimately, the paper aims to establish a framework for gamifying introductory modules in architectural education and hopes to create a future architectural augmented reality game meant to utilize gamification to help new architectural students.

summary Throughout COVID 19 Pandemic since 2020, it was necessary to generate instructional strategies including digital platforms for creative processes in architecture. This article exposes an experience that integrates pedagogical, operational, and technical dimensions in architecture virtual teaching. A pedagogical methodology was designed and implemented, fusing User Experience (UX) and Extended Reality (XR) during the architectural design process in a virtual experimental studio. The use of UX-XR as a designing-reviewing strategy in architecture, positively impacted the creative experience of both students and reviewers by enriching the perception of the space and interactively simulating the user experience. A friendly, fun, and socially inclusive environment was generated for learning architecture using synthetic media and Multiuser Virtual Environments (MUVEs). The successful results of the students’ projects by phase are shown, revealing the significance of combining UX and XR, incorporating the metaverse as a canvas to review, recreate, interact, and assess architectural designs.

summary An important part of a city, that gives it a sense of community and character, is its history. One way of acknowledging this heritage is by preserving historic building and structures. Old buildings are witnesses to the aesthetic and cultural history of a city, helping to give people a sense of place and connection to the past. Unfortunately, despite their importance within the city, historical buildings are most of the time subject to demolition and to be replaced- leaving behind stories told and untold of what use to be. The paper, therefore, aims to explore the capability of the metaverse, using virtual reality touring, to revive the memory of historical buildings that are subject to fade. Where preserving historical buildings can not only act as a symbol of grandeur but is also vital for reviving the community’s collective memory. The case study focused upon in the research paper shows a first step in the development of an immersive virtual tour for the significant building of “The Egg” or “Beirut City Center” in Downtown- which is a building that witnessed a series of unfortunate events that lead to destruction, erasure, and demolition of the building. Therefore, examining the recovery and revival of this unique historic site in an unconventional way which is in the metaverse, specifically the Virtual Reality (VR). The paper assumes that virtual reality, as the main metaverse approach, would help people ‘remember’ and ‘mentally revive’ the destroyed historical buildings that once acted as the building blocks in the impacted city. To prove this hypothesis, two different methodologies will be used, by theorical analysis and literature review, such as analyzing the main keyword, and analyzing datum from previous works. The second method will rely on the physical methodology, where virtual 3D Models will be built in a computer software, Autodesk Revit, then imported within a VR experience for an enhanced experience within the historical site to preserve the historic buildings and revive the collective memory within the community, enabling people to view how these historic sites once were and how they have now become.

summary In landscape design, visualization of a new design on the site with clients can greatly improve communication efficiency and reduce communication costs. The use of augmented reality (AR) allows the projection of design models into the real environment, but the relationship between the models and the physical environment, such as reflections, which are often thoughtfully considered in waterfront landscape design, is difficult to express in existing AR systems. The aim of this study is to accurately render and express the reflections of virtual models in the physical environment in an AR system. Different from traditional rasterized rendering, this study used physically correct ray-tracing algorithms for reflection rendering calculations. Using a smartphone and a computer, we first constructed a basic AR system using a game engine and then performed ray-tracing computations using a shader kernel in the game engine. Finally, we combined the rendering results of reflections with the video stream from a smartphone camera to achieve the reflection effect of a virtual model in a physical environment. Both designers and clients could review the design with a realistic reflection on an actual water surface and discuss design decisions through this system.

summary This paper presents an application of parametric techniques and tools to assess urban compactness in the city of Juiz de Fora, Brazil. A literature review identifies the objective metrics' role in urban design and how they are associated with the urban compactness paradigm. The case study provided results that characterize aspects of the built urban density and the mix of uses in the samples, exploring how parametric resources can help urban design. This research shed some light on how metrics can assist parametric urban design allowing performance measurement in the early design stages. It also highlights potentials, future studies, and challenges, establishing discussions about developing this field of knowledge in Brazil and even in Latin America.

summary In the post-carbon era, it has become a development and research trend on adjusting commercial locations to help achieve resource conservation by using big data. This paper uses multi-source urban data and machine learning to make reasonable evaluations and adjustments to commercial district planning. Many relevant factors are affecting urban commercial agglomeration, but how to select the appropriate ones among the many factors is a problem to be considered and studied, while there may be spatial differences in the strength of each influencing factor on commercial agglomeration. Therefore, this paper takes Shanghai, a city with a high economic and commercial development level in China, as an example and identifies the influencing factors through a literature review. Next, this paper uses the machine learning BORUTA algorithm of features selection to screen the influencing factors. It then uses multi-scale geographically weighted regression model (MGWR) to analyse the spatial heterogeneity of factors affecting retail spatial agglomeration. Finally, based on the background of the changing transportation modes and the unchanged social activities in the post-carbon era, the future spatial planning pattern of retail commercial space is discussed to provide particular suggestions for the future location adjustment of urban commerce.

summary To broaden the understanding of what has been studied on the topic of microinteractions in human-computer interaction, this article conducts an exploratory study to survey the scientific production in articles and dissertations that work with the microinteractions framework, by Saffer (2013), applied to the scope of the user experience. As a method, a systematic literature review is proposed. For this, the following scientific bases are used: Scopus Elsevier, Capes Periodicals, EBSCO and Proquest. From the perspective of design and human-computer interaction, the quantity and approaches used are investigated. Of the 731 scientific works found, 14 were filtered and selected to compose the panorama of scientific research in microinteractions. The article brings the main approaches used in microinteractions research that focus on user experience in the last decade and points out perspectives on how to investigate microinteractions in future academic research.

summary Construction and Demolition waste has started to become a target in the path for a more sustainable industry mainly due to massive resource consumption, land depletion and emissions. As a substantial amount of waste originates due to inadequate decision-making during design, strategies to design-out waste are required. Accurate environmental impact of, not only the whole building, but construction materials and elements are crucial to the development of these strategies, but dependent on data availability, expert knowledge and proper sharing and storage of information. Hence, this study aims to investigate the relation between data, stakeholders and environmental assessment to properly build a design-out waste framework. An in-depth data collection from literature review and stakeholders' interviews guided the development of a conceptual framework to assist designers with information related to waste production and its reduction. After that, the necessary technical specifications for its adoption through a BIM environment were analysed. Its contribution is firstly on a shift of thinking during the design phase, as the goal is to provide environmental information so designers can take into consideration the long-term consequences of waste from different strategies and solutions; and secondly in the development of a computational tool that facilitates the design-out process.

summary We present “ArchiDAO”, a decentralised Autonomous Organisation, i.e an architecture studio run on via smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain. The objective of the paper is to offer a concise framework for the transformation of the way architectural work is conducted, via stigmergic principles, realised on smart contracts. The paper follows a systematic review of the Viable System Model, collective authorship in architectural design and previous DAO software stacks to extract a set of stigmergic principles. We conclude the paper with a discussion and a proposal for a basic set of smart contracts that can regulate the ArchiDAO operations.

summary This paper contributes the current research state and possible future developments of AI-based autocompletion of architectural floor plans and shows demand for its establishment in computer-aided architectural design to facilitate decent work, economic growth through accelerating the design process to meet the future workload. Foundations of data representations together with the autocompletion contexts are defined, existing methods described and evaluated in the integrated literature review, and criteria for qualitative and sustainable autocompletion are proposed. Subsequently, we contribute three unique deep learning-based autocompletion methods currently in development for the research project metis-II. They are described in detail from a technical point of view on the backdrop of how they adhere to the proposed criteria for creating our novel AI.

summary This article has as its theme the discussions on Building Information Modeling (BIM) within the scope of the research presented at the SIGraDi congresses. The main objective of this article is to present a mapping of the BIM approach by the SIGraDi community, showing how this technology has been appropriate, especially in Latin America. It was possible to understand, through the analysis of the occurrence of the BIM theme in article titles in the last 15 years, that there are four predominant approaches, namely: (1) BIM implementation processes, (2) impacts of BIM tools and their advent, (3) BIM teaching methodologies and (4) BIM uses. It is expected to contribute to the mapping of the main aspects and perspectives of how BIM has been incorporated in the research developed by the members of SIGraDi.

summary This paper provides a brief overview of how technology might be considered an extension of the self from early cybernetics research onwards. It then explores how a robotic extension could engage with the critical feminist issue of “the male gaze.” In doing so, it provides a brief theoretical context to the notion of the gaze and visual behavior from a cognitive science and neuroscience point of view, and then explores it in the context of a discourse on visual culture and feminism. Finally, it illustrates the application of such a critical concept through the example of a robotic installation developed by the author for Milan Fashion Week in collaboration with Universal Robots.

summary COVID-19 was a sanitary crisis of international impact. However, its effects weren’t experienced equally. In Fortaleza, epidemiological reports (2021;2022) point to different infection patterns between high Human Development Index (HDI) and low HDI neighborhoods, which surfaced the hypothesis that certain territories’ characteristics could correlate to COVID-19 data. This article describes a phase of a three-phase research, whose objective is to identify correlations between urban and demographic (UD) data to COVID-19 data. To this, a literature review was done to select seven UD variables and four COVID-19 ones, then, Spearman’s correlation was applied in four pandemic time frames (TF). Results show that literacy rates, monthly income and energy have either low or moderate positive correlations with contamination rates in most TF. However, they’ve shown low or moderate correlations with lethality rates in three TF. Population density showed low positive correlations to either lethality rates or total number of deaths in three TF.

summary The contemporary climate crisis pushed communities of actors, cities and citizens to use smart technology, digital platforms, and data-based intelligence to steer creative solutions for greening in their urban ecosystems. This phenomenon brought about an increasing imperative for citizen participation and inclusion, in the co-design of green infrastructures, suggesting alternative ways to deal with the lack or misuse of public space. In this framework, this paper analyzes the case of ''UnionYouth in Chania'', a project that aims a) to build an environmental awareness strategy for Generation Z, b) to promote capacity-building processes related to climate change and environmental protection, c) actually transform the city public space through participatory processes. Specifically, the project describes the creation of a digital platform and a mobile app consisting of several engagement tools that allow interaction between the digital community of youth, the city's decision-makers, and city greening actors. Therefore, the first part of the paper talks about the necessity of promoting today's participatory processes in the city for climate change mitigation through a literature review that emerged in the last decade. The second part of the paper examines a case study, namely UnionYouth in Chania, a digital collaborative platform that promotes methods for greening the city through district-based, activity-based, and network-based redesign solutions. The third part of the paper brings about interesting reflections on the relationship between the analog and digital world, and how bottom-up processes may be an important tool in city planning. The overall scope of the analysis of the specific case study is to bring insights into the architectural world, as a means to create more bridges with citizens and communities and contribute to their greening understanding.

summary The ICT’s development has led to the introduction of work automation technology into the AEC industry, and many governments around the world have attempted to increase work efficiency by introducing the automation technology for building legality review into the building administrative system. Prior to this, it is essential to develop a database of which natural language-based building codes should be modified in code. Thus, this study addresses a method to convent building acts in the form of natural language into computer-readable one through formalization and encoding and to establish database with the aim of developing the automation technology for legality review for setting size used in pre-design phase. The method suggested is verified through the developed authoring tool.
