summary ZeroWaste is a project about repositioning existing timber building stock within a circular economy framework. Rather than disposing of these buildings at the end of their life, the goal is to view them as stores of valuable resources that can be readily reused. By doing this, material life cycle becomes an integral design consideration alongside planning for the efficient disassembly and reuse of these structures. In this paper, the computational workflow is presented for the first phase of the project: planning a cooperative robotic disassembly sequence for the scaffold-free removal of members from existing timber structures.

title How we talk(ed) about it: Ways of speaking about computational architecture

summary If we understand architecture as a three-part system formed by the building, its image, or drawings and imagesdescribing buildings, and the critical discourse around architecture, then the texts or ways of speaking aboutarchitecture play a key role in understanding the field and its development. By analysing a corpus of around 4.6million words from texts written between 2005 and 2020 that form a part of critical discourse in computational architecture (understood as the result of the intense digitalization of the field), this paper aims tomap ways of speaking about computational architecture. This contributes to architectural theory and mighthelp gain a better understanding of the evolution of the digitalization of construction in general. Findings showthat computational architecture is surrounded by a specific way of speaking, hybridized with words fromfields such as biology, neuroscience, arts and humanities, and engineering. While some topics such as‘sustainability’ or ‘biology’ come up consistently in the discourse, others, such as ‘people’ or ‘human’, haveperiods when they are more and less popular. After highlighting open research questions, the paperconcludes by presenting a map of periodic and recurring topics in ways of speaking about computationalarchitecture over the last 15 years, thus tracking and documenting long-term trends, and illuminating patternsin the broader field of digital construction.

summary The confluence of different interests‚the Anthropocene, productivity, sustainability, economics‚calls for a need to re-think how the professions evaluate the built environment. There is a myriad of different strands of work under this umbrella which‚broadly‚point to a shift in the value framework for those people and professions who have agency in, and are responsible for, the creation of the built environment. This paper has two objectives. First, by drawing from the writing of architectural theorist Juhani Pallasmaa it teases out themes useful to conceptualise the value change. The goal is to delineate particular views around the creation of and our relation to the built environment. Second, it presents three projects: (1) tracking chemical composition of construction materials, (2) an app that encourages e-commerce in building multi-species environments, and (3) a concept for an economy in construction waste leveraging possibilities presented by blockchain technology. The aim is to shed light on how the emerging blockchain technology might alter values and organisational systems of the built environment in response to the Anthropocene and climate crisis.

summary Intense urbanization has led us to rethink construction and demolition practices on a global scale. There is an opportunity to respond to the climate crisis by moving towards a circular built environment. Such a paradigm shift can be achieved by critically examining the possibility of reusing components from existing buildings. This study investigates approaches and tools needed to analyze the existing building stock and methods to enable component reuse. Ocular observations were conducted in Google Street View to analyze two building-specific characteristics: (1) facade material and (2) reusable components (window, doors, and shutters) found on building facades in two cities: Barcelona and Zurich. Not all products are equally suitable for reuse and require an evaluation metric to understand which components can be reused effectively. Consequently, tailored reuse strategies that are defined by a priority order of waste prevention are put forth. Machine learning shows promising potential to visually collect building-specific characteristics that are relevant for component reuse. The data collected is used to create classification maps that can help define protocols and for urban planning. This research can upscale limited information in countries where available data about the existing building stock is insufficient.

title Generative Design for a Sustainable Urban Morphology

summary The present work concerns the applications of generative design for sustainable urban fabric. This represents an iterative process that involves an algorithm for the generation of solar envelopes to satisfy solar and density constraints. We propose in this paper to explore a meta-universe of human-machine interaction. It aims to design urban forms that offer solar access. This being to minimize heating energy expenditure and provide solar well-being. We propose to study the impact of the solar strategy of building morphosis on energy exposure. It consists of determining the layout and shape of the constructions based on the shading cut-off time. This is a period of desirable solar access. We propose to define it as a balance between the solar irradiation received in winter and that received in summer. We rely on the concept of the solar envelope defined since the 1970s by Knowles and its many derivatives (Koubaa Turki & al., 2020). We propose a parametric model to generate solar envelopes at the scale of an urban block. The generative design makes it possible to create a digital model of the different density solutions by varying the solar access duration. The virtual environment created allows exploring urban morphologies resilient both to urban densification and better use of the context’s resources. The seasonal energy balance, between overexposure in summer and access to the sun in winter, allows reaching high energy and environmental efficiency of the buildings. We have developed an algorithm on Dynamo for the generation of the solar envelope by shading exchange. The program makes it possible to detect the boundaries of the parcels imported from Revit, establish the layout of the building, and generate the solar envelopes for each variation of the shading cut-off time. It also calculates the FAR1 and the FSI2 from the variation of the shading cut-off time for each parcel of the island. We compare the solutions generated according to the urban density coefficients and the solar access duration. Once the optimal solution has been determined, we export the results back into Revit environment to complete the BIM modelling for solar study. This article proposes a method for designing buildings and neighbourhoods in a virtual environment. The latter acts upstream of the design process and can be extended to the different phases of the building life cycle: detailed design, construction, and use.

summary This paper advances the application of computational optimization to design for circular economy (CE) by comparing results of scalarized single-objective optimization (SOO) and multi-objective optimization (MOO) to a furniture design case study. A framework integrating both methods is put forward based on results of the case study. Existing design frameworks for CE emphasize optimization through an iterative process of manual assessment and redesign (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2015). Identifying good design solutions for CE, however, is a complex and time-consuming process. Most prominent CE design frameworks list at least nine objectives, several of which may conflict (Reike et al., 2018). Computational optimization responds to these challenges by automating search for best solutions and assisting the designer to identify and manage conflicting objectives. Given the many objectives outlined in circular design frameworks, computational optimisation would appear a priori to be an appropriate method. While results presented in this paper show that scalarized SOO is ultimately more time-efficient for evaluating CE design problems, we suggest that given the presence of conflicting circular design objectives, pareto-set visualization via MOO can initially better support designers to identify preferences.

summary Compared to the take-make-waste-oriented linear economy model, the circular model has been studied since the 1980s. Due to consumption-oriented lifestyles along with having a tendency of considering waste materials as trash, studies on sustainable materials management (SMM) have remained at a theoretical level or created temporary and limited impacts. To ensure SMM supports The European Green Deal, there is a necessity of developing top-down and bottom-up strategies simultaneously, which can be metaphorized as digging a tunnel from two different directions to meet in the middle of a mountain. In parallel with the New European Bauhaus concept, this research aims to create a case study for boosting bottom-up and data-driven methodologies to produce short-loop products made of bio-based biocomposite materials from local food & organic wastes. The Architecture departments of two universities from different countries collaborated to practice these design democratization methodologies using data transfer paths. The 3D printable models, firmware code, and detailed explanation of working with a customized 3D printer paste extruder were shared using online tools. Accordingly, the bio-based biocomposite recipe from eggshell, xanthan gum, and citric acid, which can be provided from local shops, food & organic wastes, was investigated concurrently to enhance its printability feature for generating interior design elements such as a vase or vertical gardening unit. While sharing each step from open-source platforms with adding snapshots and videos allows further development between two universities, it also makes room for other researchers/makers/designers to replicate the process/product. By combining modern manufacturing and traditional crafting methods with materials produced with DIY techniques from local resources, and using global data transfer platforms to transfer data instead of products themselves, this research seeks to unlock the value of co-creative design practices for SMM.

summary The incorporation IoT into our social systems and the digitization of our everyday life has become the new norm for societies worldwide. This study posits that digitization should apply to our cities as well. The digital aspect of technology is not always tangible – even in the figurative sense of grasping a concept – and its allure lies in this virtual aspect. That is the starting point of discussion in this paper – the virtuality of intelligent cities, the intangible forces that make these new cities smart, and how said forces can be incorporated to create new smart hybrid cities that also aim to be intelligent, connected, and efficient. This research paper was designed to first set a strong theoretical base, which includes how the Circular City Actions CCA assessment framework works. This framework is applied to the three virtual methods, Sharing Economy, Smart Parking, and Virtual Power Plants VPP, as well as an international case study, the VPP in South Australia. The CCA framework was then applied to the data gathered for the local case study, the New Administrative Capital NAC in Egypt, which was chosen because it is the largest smart city being constructed currently in Egypt right now. Since it is still not fully operational, the data collected was based on governmental plans, proposals, and published papers about the city released within the last 5 years. After theoretically incorporating the proposed virtual methods into the NAC’s plans and reapplying the assessment framework, the results were greatly improved in different aspects. This study made it clear that the NAC has a strong hypothetical foundation to become an intelligent connected city, but there were some missed opportunities of incorporating virtual intelligent solutions to be implemented at different levels as the three proposed in this paper to reach its goal.

summary In the framework of a doctoral thesis, we investigate with a digital approach, methods, practices and tools that could support the reuse process of materials, specifically timber resources. We have structured this paper around the study of a digital workflow and tool. More than supplying the thesis working tools, their role is to achieve on-site assessment of wooden structural elements, to reintegrate them into new constructions projects as new timber products from the market. The context of our research is French AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) sector, where we lead interviews and take part in construction projects (case studies). However, we lean as well on the literature review of materials reuse and timber assessment.

summary Sustainable temporary architecture seems like a dichotomy but should be a major concern for the construction industry. Now aware of its impact, architecture must contribute to a more sustainable management of resources and despite their short time frame, ephemeral structures should be no exception to the rule. This work aims to develop a simpler and more accessible computational workflow based on the particle system tool Kangaroo inside Grasshopper to match design intent with available material stock. The proposed research examines the potential of combining raw or reused materials, such as wood and plastic, with easily accessible architectural technologies and tools to generate temporary and sustainable constructions. The workflow allows for many design variations using only simple and intuitive tools in both its digital and physical stages and aims to support the simple development non-standard, responsible temporary architecture that fully implements the principles of a circular economy.

summary The new construction that is projected to take place between 2020 and 2040 plays a critical role in embodied carbon emissions. The change in material selection is inversely proportional to the budget as the project progresses. Given the fact that early-stage design processes often do not include environmental performance metrics, there is an opportunity to investigate a toolset that enables early-stage design processes to integrate this type of analysis into the preferred workflow of concept designers. The value here is that early-stage environmental feedback can inform the crucial decisions that are made in the beginning, giving a greater chance for a building with better environmental performance in terms of its life cycle. This paper presents the development of a tool called LearnCarbon, as a plugin of Rhino3d, used to educate architects and engineers in the early stages about the environmental impact of their design. It facilitates two neural networks trained with the Embodied Carbon Benchmark Study by Carbon Leadership Forum, which learns the relationship between building geometry, typology, and construction type with the Global Warming potential (GWP) in tons of C02 equivalent (tCO2e). The first one, a regression model, can predict the GWP based on the massing model of a building, along with information about typology and location. The second one, a classification model, predicts the construction type given a massing model and target GWP. LearnCarbon can help improve the building life cycle impact significantly through early predictions of the structure’s material and can be used as a tool for facilitating sustainable discussions between the architect and the client.

summary Standard design for schools in underdeveloped countries seems to be the key to lowering the cost of the whole building process, from design to construction. But since it might not be suitable for different situations, the range of each design is limited. This paper presents a parametric algorithm intended to provide mass customized Architectural solutions for school buildings. A Shape Grammar based methodology for customized school designs is proposed. A set of rules is defined based on chosen characteristics in a corpus of analysis and then is implemented in an open-source modeling software. The algorithm proposed is able to provide solutions for different lots and number of students assisted.

summary Almost every technological and industrial concept changes the built environment around us and our understanding of the architectural practice. Recently, Hyperautomation, an all-encompassing digital transformation with the help of advanced techniques, has been presented as a game-changing concept that can affect any industry. Despite this promising concept, the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry seems far behind the latest technological breakthroughs and automation of processes compared to other industries. Therefore, this study provides a better understanding of adopting the novel Hyperautomation paradigm in the AEC industry by focusing on Industry 4.0. In this context, the first section introduces the Construction 4.0 concept, its counterpart in the AEC industry, briefly mentions fundamental approaches and indicates the need for a framework. The second section introduces an integrated framework throughout the entire building life-cycle for design and construction processes and exemplifies the stages in an autonomous system and their interrelationships. The third section presents a hypothetical case, a distributed reconfigurable robotic assembly system, and the assembler ‘HookBot’ to understand the relationships in an autonomous system better. The last section discusses the place of the Hyperautomation paradigm in architecture.

summary Construction and Demolition waste has started to become a target in the path for a more sustainable industry mainly due to massive resource consumption, land depletion and emissions. As a substantial amount of waste originates due to inadequate decision-making during design, strategies to design-out waste are required. Accurate environmental impact of, not only the whole building, but construction materials and elements are crucial to the development of these strategies, but dependent on data availability, expert knowledge and proper sharing and storage of information. Hence, this study aims to investigate the relation between data, stakeholders and environmental assessment to properly build a design-out waste framework. An in-depth data collection from literature review and stakeholders' interviews guided the development of a conceptual framework to assist designers with information related to waste production and its reduction. After that, the necessary technical specifications for its adoption through a BIM environment were analysed. Its contribution is firstly on a shift of thinking during the design phase, as the goal is to provide environmental information so designers can take into consideration the long-term consequences of waste from different strategies and solutions; and secondly in the development of a computational tool that facilitates the design-out process.

summary Bushfires are a global phenomenon, closely connected to climate change and safety, resilience and sustainability of cities and human settlements. Government agencies, architects and researchers across institutions are committed to improving Australia‚s resilience to bushfires yet grappling with ways to further mitigate risks. ‚Build back better‚ is the often-used phrase to support bushfire resilience, yet there remains a limited understanding of how secondary structures, such as storage sheds, garages, and fences contribute to or mitigate fire loss. These secondary structures are integral to properties yet fall, largely, outside land use planning approval processes and other regulations. Computational modelling can be adapted to deliver visualisations that increase awareness. We developed several simulation approaches which addressed distances, relationship to and the construction materials of secondary structures, terrain slopes and environmental forces. We conclude that gaming engines may offer the optimal immersive opportunity for residents and others to visualise fire risks related to secondary structures to increase awareness and improve bushfire readiness behaviours.

summary Gypsum is one of the most commonly used construction materials in cladding and non-load-bearing decoration. Recently, 3D printing technology has been involved in creating complex geometry. The particle-based method is the principal approach in 3D gypsum printing. However, the complex device and limited printable range limit the massive production of large-scale building components. This paper proposed a novel extrusion-based gypsum printing method and corresponding robotic fabrication workflow. First, several experiments are conducted to analyze the effect of different admixtures (retarder, activation agent, and accelerator) on the material setting properties. Second, a set-on-demand gypsum-based material is proposed by actively controlling multiple admixtures. Then, a process parameter-based robotic fabrication workflow is proposed, and a set of extrusion- based 3D gypsum printing equipment is built. center864108000A curved gypsum panel sample is printed as experimental verification. By comparing to the particle-based method, The test sample shows that the extrusion-based method can effectively improve the production efficiency and reduce the production cost. Therefore, the proposed method gives a relatively efficient and cost-effective way to produce recyclable gypsum material massively.

summary This research presents the development of a construction system for a solid expanded cork building envelope. The inspiration for this research is the “Cork House” built in 2019 by Matthew Barnett Howland and Oliver Wilton, who developed a Cork Construction Kit for a monolithic dry-jointed cork structure. The goal of this research is to analyze and develop different varieties of construction methods for a dry-joined cork building by combining and applying traditional masonry techniques. The objective is to generate a material-based design for cork construction elements trough prototyping and using a selection of digital tools such as 3D modeling and 3D printing. Expanded cork is a 100% plant-based material which, if applied correctly, has the capacity to be used as a load bearing, insulating and protective structure all at once. It has almost no environmental impact and is completely compostable. To maintain the material's compostable property, this construction system has to be developed without any kind of binders or mortar. Additionally, this more reduced and simplified form of construction will not only make it possible to build without any specific expertise, but at the same time ensure resources to be reused or composted at the end of building life.

summary The intent of this research is to study potential improvements and optimizations in the context of robotic fabrication paired with Augmented Reality (AR), leveraging the technology in the fabrication of the individual part, as well as guiding the larger assembly process. AR applications within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry have seen constant research and development as designers, fabricators, and contractors seek methods to reduce errors, minimize waste, and optimize efficiency to lower costs (Chi, Kang, and Wang 2013). Recent advancements have made the technology very accessible and feasible for use in the field, as demonstrated by seminal projects such as the Steampunk Pavilion in Tallinn, Estonia (Jahn, Newnham, and Berg 2022). These types of projects typically improve manual craft processes. They often provide projective guidelines, and make possible complex geometries that would otherwise be painstakingly slow to complete and require decades of artisanal experience (Jahn et al. 2019). Building upon a previously developed robotic tube bending workflow, our research implements a custom AR interface to streamline the bending process for multiple, large, complex parts with many bends, providing a pre-visualization of the expected fabrication process for safety and part-verification purposes. We demonstrate the utility of this AR overlay in the part fabrication setting and in an inadvertent, human-robot, collaborative process when parts push the fabrication method past its limits. The AR technology is also used to facilitate the assembly process of a spatial installation exploring a unique aesthetic with subtle bends, loops, knots, bundles, and weaves utilizing a rigid tube material.

summary The new construction that is projected to take place between 2020 and 2040 plays a critical role in embodied carbon emissions. The change in material selection is inversely proportional to the budget, as the project progresses. Given the fact that early-stage design processes often do not include environmental performance metrics, there is an opportunity to investigate a toolset that enables early-stage design processes to integrate this type of analysis into the preferred workflow of concept designers. The value here is that early-stage environmental feedback can inform the crucial decisions that are made in the beginning, giving a greater chance for a building with better environmental performance in terms of its life cycle. This paper presents the development of a tool called LearnCarbon, as a plugin of Rhino3d, used to educate architects and engineers in the early stages about the environmental impact of their design. It facilitates two neural networks trained with the Embodied Carbon Benchmark Study by Carbon Leadership Forum, which learn the relationship between building geometry, typology, and structure with the Global Warming potential in tCO2e. The first one, a regression model, is able to predict the GWP based on the massing model of a building, along with information about typology and location. The second one, a classification model, predicts the construction type given a massing model and target GWP. LearnCarbon can help improve the building life cycle impact significantly, through early predictions of the structure’s material, and can be used as a tool for facilitating sustainable discussions between the architect and the client.

summary This paper explores the potential of robotic needle felting for customized production of nonwoven textiles and their architectural applications. The possibility to program the robotic movement and locally control fiber density and distribution allows the design of nonwoven, heterogeneous materials with graded properties not by differentiating their chemical composition, but rather controlling their mechanical structure. We propose a parametric design and fabrication workflow relying on a 6-axis robotic arm. We describe design techniques for the generation of felted surfaces with varying material properties and their translation to instructions for robotic felting, as well as the physical fabrication setup. Within our research, the ability to locally differentiate material properties is further explored to create three-dimensional folding behaviors. We study how fiber densities affect their folding ability and geometry, examine qualities of resulting edges, analyze how they affect folding and finally design targeted folded structures by informing the felting pattern. While robotic felting has not yet found significant applications in architecture, the designs and prototypes demonstrate its potential in the architectural context, as it suggests new solutions for recyclable, circular building components or surfaces.
