summary Within the context of recent research to augment the design process with artificial intelligence (AI), this work contributes by introducing a new method. The proposed method automates the design environmental performance evaluation by developing a deep learning-based surrogate model to inform the early design stages. The project is aimed at automating performative design aspects, enabling designers to focus on creative design space exploration while retrieving real-time predictions of environmental metrics of evolving design options in generative systems. This shift from a simulation-based to a prediction-based approach liberates designers from having to conduct simulation and optimization procedures and allows for their native design abilities to be augmented. When introduced into design systems, AI strategies can improve existing protocols, and enable attaining environmentally conscious designs and achieve UN Sustainable Development Goal 11.

summary To attain "carbon neutrality," lowering urban energy use and increasing the use of renewable resources have become critical concerns for urban planning and architectural design. Traditional energy consumption evaluation tools have a high operational threshold, requiring specific parameter settings and cross-disciplinary knowledge of building physics. As a result, it is difficult for architects to manage energy issues through 'trial and error' in the design process. The purpose of this study is to develop an automated workflow capable of providing urban configurations that minimizing the energy use while maximizing rooftop photovoltaic power potential. Based on shape grammar, parametric meta models of three different urban forms were developed and batch simulated for its energy performance. Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is introduced to find the optimal solution of the urban geometry. A neural network was created to fit a real-time mapping of urban form indicators to energy performance and was utilized to predict reward for the DRL process, namely a Deep R-Network, while nested within a Deep Q-Network. The workflow proposed in this paper promotes efficiency in optimizing the energy performance of solutions in the early stages of design, as well as facilitating a collaborative design process with human-machine interaction.

summary The scope of this paper is to formulate and evaluate the structure of a viable design workflow that combines a variety of computational tools and uses artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the designer‚s capacity to explore design options within an expanded design space. In light of the autonomous and progressively post-anthropocentric generative capability of recent AI strategies for architectural design, we are interested in investigating some of the challenges involved in the insertion of such AI strategies into a new generative design system, involving data curation and the placement of any AI-assisted model in the overall workflow, as well as its (AI‚s) reciprocity with other computational methods such as discrete assembly and agent-based modeling. The paper presents our interrogation of the proposed AI-assisted framework, demonstrated in experiments of formulating multiple design workflows following different strategies. The workflow strategies show that integrating AI networks into a framework with other computational tools affords a different kind of design exploration than other methods; the prospect of novel solutions is heavily dependent on the interconnectedness of such methods and the dataset curation process. Collectively, the work contributes to innovation in architectural education and practice through enhancing scientific research (in line with UN Sustainable Development Goal 9).

title A Rapid Wind Velocity Prediction Method in Built Environment Based on CycleGAN Model

summary Although the wind microclimate and wind environment play important roles in urban prediction, the time-consuming and complicated setup and process of wind simulation are widely regarded as challenges. There are several methods to use deep learning (DL) models for wind speed prediction by labeling pairs of wind simulation dataset samples. However, many wind simulation experiments are needed to obtain paired datasets, which is still time-consuming and cumbersome. Compared with previous studies, we propose a method to train a DL model without labelling paired data, which is based on Cycle Generative Adversarial Network (cycleGAN). To verify our hypothesis, we evaluate the results and process of the pix2pix model (requires paired datasets) and cycleGAN (does not requires paired datasets), and explore the difference of results between these two DL models and professional CFD software. The result shows that cycleGAN can perform as well as pix2pix in accuracy, indicating that some random city plans image samples and random wind simulation samples can train surrogate models as accurate as labelled DL methods. Although the DL method has similar results to the professional CFD method, the details of the wind flow results still need improvement. This study can help designers and policymakers to make informed decisions to choose Dl methods for real-time wind speed prediction for early-stage design exploration.

summary Mixed-reality landscape simulation is one of the visual methods used in landscape design studies. A markerless tracking method using image processing has been proposed for properly aligning the real and virtual worlds involved with landscape simulations in large spaces. However, this method is challenging because tracking breaks down if a dynamic object is encountered during the mixed-reality execution. In this study, we integrated deep-learning object detection with natural feature-based tracking, which tracks manually defined feature points (tracking reference points), with the aim of reducing the impact of moving objects such as people and cars on mixed-reality tracking. The prototype system was implemented and tracking was performed on pre-recorded video taken outdoors. Performance was verified in terms of the number of errors associated with tracking the reference points and the accuracy of the mixed-reality display results (camera pose estimation results). Compared to the conventional system, our system was able to reduce the influence of moving objects that cause errors when tracking reference points. The accuracy of the camera pose estimation results was also verified to be improved. This research will contribute to developing mixed-reality simulation systems for large-scale spaces that are accessible to everyone, including users in the architectural field.

title Generating floor plans with deep learning: A cross-validation assessment over different dataset sizes

summary The advent of deep learning has enabled a series of opportunities; one of them is the ability to tackle subjective factors on the floor plan design and make predictions though spatial semantic maps. Nonetheless, the amount available of data grows exponentially on a daily basis, in this sense, this research seeks to investigate deep generative methods of floor plan design and its relationship between data volume, with training time, quality and diversity in the outputs; in other words, what is the amount of data required to rapidly train models that return optimal results. In our research, we used a variation of the Conditional Generative Adversarial Network algorithm, that is, Pix2pix, and a dataset of approximately 80 thousand images to train 10 models and evaluate their performance through a series of computational metrics. The results show that the potential of this data-driven method depends not only on the diversity of the training set but also on the linearity of the distribution; therefore, high-dimensional datasets did not achieve good results. It is also concluded that models trained on small sets of data (800 images) may return excellent results if given the correct training instructions (Hyperparameters), but the best baseline to this generative task is in the mid-term, using around 20 to 30 thousand images with a linear distribution. Finally, it is presented standard guidelines for dataset design, and the impact of data curation along the entire process

summary Advances in additive manufacturing allow architectural elements to be fabricated with increasingly complex geometrical designs, however, corresponding 3D design software requires substantial knowledge and skill to operate, limiting adoption by non-experts or people with disabilities. Established non-expert approaches typically constrain geometry, topology, or character to a pre-established configuration, rather than aligning to figural and aesthetic characteristics defined by a user. A methodology is proposed that enables a user to develop multi-manifold designs from sketches or images in several 3d camera projections. An agent-based design approach responds to computer vision analysis (CVA) and Deep Reinforcement Learning (RL) to design outcomes with perceptual similarity to user input images evaluated by Structural Similarity Indexing (SSIM). Several CVA and RL ratios were explored in training models and tested on untrained images to evaluate their effectiveness. Results demonstrate a combination of CVA and RL motion behavior can produce meshes with perceptual similarity to image content.

summary Sketch is a way for architects to communicate with others. Architects record their own ideas through rapid drawing. However, sketches are abstract, vague, and even ambiguous. To this end, architects need to spend a lot of time, through modeling and other means, to present the architectural plan that can be understood by people. However, this method is time-consuming and laborious. Due to the development of deep learning technology, especially convolutional neural networks (CNN) and generative adversarial networks (GAN), they have shown great advantages in the field of image recognition and generation. With the help of these technologies, ambiguous architectural sketches can be directly transformed into architectural scheme drawings, and architects’ creative intentions can be continuously improved and developed, It will be very convenient and efficient. Therefore, based on the image-to-image translation, this paper realizes the mapping from architectural sketches to architectural scheme drawings with the help of CycleGAN. Through the analysis of the architectural generation design results of Frank Gehry's and Alberto Campo Baeza's architectural sketches, firstly, the feasibility of this method is verified. Secondly, it is found that this method can well complete the identification of sketch boundaries. In the generated scheme drawings, it can not only reflect the volume and lighting changes of the building, but also reflect the architect's creative intention and style to a large extent, The side reflects the cognitive ability of this method to architectural design.

summary Urban Building Energy Model (UBEM) approaches help analyze the energy performance of urban areas and predict the impact of different retrofit strategies. However, UBEM approaches require a high level of expertise and entail time-consuming simulations. These limitations hinder their successful application in designing and planning urban areas and supporting the city policy-making sector. Hence, it is necessary to investigate alternatives that are easy-to-use, automated, and fast. Surrogate models have been recently used to address UBEM limitations; however, they are case-specific and only work properly within specific parameter boundaries. We propose a new surrogate modeling approach to predict the energy performance of urban areas by integrating Algorithmic Design, UBEM, and Machine Learning. Our approach can automatically model and simulate thousands of building archetypes and create a broad surrogate model capable of quickly predicting annual energy profiles of large urban areas. We evaluated our approach by applying it to a case study located in Lisbon, Portugal, where we compare its use in model-based optimization routines against conventional UBEM approaches. Results show that our approach delivers predictions with acceptable accuracy at a much faster rate.

summary Within computational environmental design (CED), different Machine Learning (ML) models are gaining ground. They aim for time efficiency by automating simulation and speeding up environmental performance feedback. This study suggests an approach that enhances not the optimization but the generative aspect of environmentally driven ML processes in architectural design. We follow Stan Allen's (2009) idea of 'field conditions' as a bottom-up phenomenon according to which form and space emerge from local invisible and dynamic connections. By employing parametric modeling, environmental analysis data, and conditional Generative Adversarial Networks [cGAN] we introduce a generative approach in design that reverses the typical design process of going from formal interpretation to analysis and encourages the emergence of spatial configurations with embedded environmental intelligence. We call it Intensive-driven Environmental Design Computation [IEDC], and we employ it in a case study on a residential building typology encountered in the Mediterranean. The paper describes the process, emphasizing dataset preparation as the stage where the logic of field conditions is established. The proposed research differentiates from cGAN models that offer automatic environmental performance predictions to one that spatial predictions stem from dynamic fields.

summary In the 1940s, modern Rio de Janeiro architects developed passive systems to improve buildings performance, without resorting to air conditioning systems. This research studies the performance of a set of eight buildings, from the Carioca School, investigating in a prospective sense how to improve their performance through computational methods. The authors modelled the eight buildings and analysed as a case study the Nova Cintra building performance, regarding insolation and illuminance, using the environmental software Ladybug and Honeybee. Based on the simulation data, they used combinatorial modeling to change the position of each of the three shading type’s modules of the north facade of Nova Cintra, to improve their overall performance. Results confirm that is possible to continue to improve the buildings performance, as already accomplished by the modern buildings, using computational methods to improve, reducing also energy consumption through natural systems and diminishing the need for artificial air conditioning systems.

summary Romance awakens fond memories of the city. Finding out the relationship between romantic scene and urban morphology, and providing a prediction, can potentially facilitate the better urban design and urban life. Taking the Yangtze River Delta region of China as an example, this study aims to predict the distribution of romantic locations using deep learning based on multi-source data. Specifically, we use web crawlers to extract romance-related messages and geographic locations from social media platforms, and visualize them as romance heatmap. The urban environment and building features associated with romantic information are identified by Pearson correlation analysis and annotated in the city map. Then, both city labelled maps and romance heatmaps are fed into a Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) as the training dataset to achieve final romance distribution predictions across regions for other cities. The ideal prediction results highlight the ability of deep learning techniques to quantify experience-based decision-making strategies that can be used in further research on urban design.

summary The advances of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have provided a new experimental ground for creative architecture processes. However, the analytical potential of the latent representation of GANs is yet to be explored for architectural spatial analysis. Furthermore, most research on GANs for floorplan learning in architecture uses images as its main representation medium. This paper presents an experimental framework that uses one-dimensional periodic isovist samples and GANs inversion to recover its latent representation. Access to GANs’ latent space will open up a possibility for discriminative tasks such as classification and clustering analysis. The resulting latent representation will be investigated to discover its analytical capacity in extracting isovist spatial patterns from thousands of floorplans data. In this experiment, we hypothetically conclude that the spatial signature of the architectural floor plan could be derived from the degree of regularity of isovist samples in the latent space structure. The finding of this research will enable a new data-driven strategy to measure spatial quality using isovist and provide a new way for indexing architectural floorplan.

summary With the ascendance of Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN), promising prospects have arisen from the abilities of machines to learn and recognize patterns in 2D datasets and generate new results as an inspirational tool in architectural design. Insofar as the majority of ML experiments in architecture are conducted with imagery based on readily available 2D data, architects and designers are faced with the challenge of transforming machine-generated images into 3D. On the other hand, GAN-generated images are found to be able to learn the 3D information out of 2D perspectival images. To facilitate such transformation from 2D and 3D data in the framework of deep learning in architecture, this paper explores making new architectural forms from flat GAN images by employing traditional tools of projective geometry. The experiments draw on Brook Taylor’s 19th- century theorem of inverse projection system for creating architectural form from perspectival information learned from GAN images of Swiss alpine architecture. The research develops a parametric tool that automates the dimensional transformation of 2D images into 3D architectural forms. This research identifies potential synergic interactions between traditional tools and techniques of architects and deep learning algorithms to achieve collective intelligence in designing and representing creative architecture forms between humans and machines.

summary Deep Learning (DL) has recently gained widespread attention in the automation of urban layout processes. This study proposes a rule-based and Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) workflow to automatically select and label urban datasets to train customized GAN models for the generation of urban layout proposals. The developed workflow automatically collects and labels urban typology samples from open-source maps. Furthermore, it controls the results of the GAN process with labels and provides real-time urban layout suggestions based on a co-design process. The conducted case study shows that the average value of the GAN results, trained from an automatically generated dataset, meets the site's requirements. The developed co-design strategy allows the architect to control the GAN process and perform iterations on urban layouts. The research addresses the research gap in GAN applications in the field of urban design and planning. Many studies have demonstrated that training the (GAN) model by labeling enables machines to learn urban morphological features and urban layout logic. However, two research gaps remain: (1) The manual filtering of GAN urban sample datasets to fit site-specific design requirements is very time-consuming. (2) Without a suitable data labeling method, it is difficult to manage the GAN process in such a manner to facilitate the meeting of overriding design requirements.

summary Fibrous architecture constitutes an alternative approach to conventional building systems and established construction methods. It shows the potential to converge architectural concerns such as spatial expression and structural elegance, with urgently required resource effectiveness and material efficiency, in a genuinely computational approach. Fundamental characteristics of fibre composite are shared with fibre structures in the natural world, enabling the transfer of design principles and providing a vast repertoire of inspiration. Robotic fabrication based on coreless filament winding, a technique to deposit resin impregnated fibre filaments with only minimal formwork, as well as integrative computational design methods are imperative to the development of complex fibrous building systems. Two projects, the BUGA Fibre Pavilion as an example for long-span structures, and Maison Fibre as an example of multi-storey architecture, showcase the application of those techniques in an architectural context and highlight areas of further research opportunities. The highly interrelated aesthetic, structural and fabrication characteristics of fibre nets are difficult to understand and go beyond a designer’s comprehension and intuition. An AI powered, self-learning agent system aims to extend and thoroughly explore the design space of fibre structures to unlock the full design potential coreless filament winding offers. In order to ensure feedback between all relevant design and performance criteria and enable interdisciplinary convergence, these novel design methods are embedded in a larger co-design framework. It formalizes the interaction of involved interdisciplinary domains and allows for interactive collaboration based on a central data model, serving as a base for design optimisation and exploration. To further advance research on fibre composites in architecture, bio-based materials are considered, continuing the journey of discovery of fibrous architecture to fundamentally rethinking design and construction towards a novel, computational material culture in architecture.

summary This paper presents a reinforcement learning (RL) based design method for kinetic facades to optimize the movement direction of shading panels. Included with this research is a case study on the Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta, USA to examine the effectiveness of the proposed design method in a real-life context. Optimization of building performance has been given increased attention due to the significant impact buildings have on energy consumption and carbon emissions. Further, building performance is closely related to the "Sustainable Cities and Communities‚ mentioned in SDG11. Results show that the novel design method improved the building performance by reducing solar radiation and glare and illustrate the potential of RL in tackling complex design problems in the architectural field.

summary With China's fast urbanization, the study of the walkability of residents' life circles has become critical to improve people's quality of life. Traditional walkability calculations are based on Lawrence Frank's theory. However, the weighted calculation method cannot be adapted to ever-changing and complicated scenarios as the scope and topic of research transforming. This study investigated walkability at the community level by combining machine learning techniques with multi-source data. Feature indicators affecting walkability were estimated from multi-source data. Machine learning was used to refine the weighting calculation under the previous indicator framework. We compared the performance of 20 regression models from 6 different machine learning algorithms for estimating the walkability of 14578 communities in downtown Shanghai. It is concluded that the Bagged Tree Model (R2=0.86, RMSE=0.36862) achieves the best performance, which is used to revise the initial walkability index values. The workflow proposed in this paper allows for rapid application of expert empirical consensus to comprehensive urban design and detailed urban governance in the future.
