title Exploring the Topological System of Dougong

summary The large-span wooden construction project uses a sophisticated tenon joinery system to overcome the limitation on the size of the material. However, making a clear layout and knowledge transfer is an important issue under the complex structure. This research takes "Dougong‚ as an example to sort out the possible knowledge graph of Dougong. Through the geometric feature classification and the relationship between the joints, we found that the structural relationship of traditional Dougong is like the branch system of the L-system. But it has the characteristic of horizontal connections that make Dougong restrain one another more firmly. Besides a graphical representation of the complex joinery system, it can quickly visualize and adjust the type changes and therefore provide another network related to the building model. Besides computational geometry to traditional wood structure analysis and automation, we also explored two new types of Dougong from a perspective of the traditional wooden structure. So, in this research, we developed automatic digital tools for Dougong and propose new applications of Space Syntax, attempting to break through the existing limitations of Dougong.

summary High-rise residences are typically very homogeneous and only allow for very limited variability in apartment configurations. Since the 1960s, practitioners and researchers have been exploring alternative visions of adaptable housing solutions that involve residents in the design process. Recent research has proposed digital platforms for residential participatory design. However, methods of modifying apartment configurations after building construction have not yet been developed in detail. This paper suggests a high-rise housing system that supports continuous adaptation and a web application that facilitates participatory design. The proposed construction system leverages on the prefabricated building modules and the open building concept to allow constant renewal of its non-structural building parts. This is complimented by a preliminary prototype of an online platform developed to streamline the design, negotiation and transaction of apartments by the homebuyers. The research conceptually investigates the potential of modern technology in redefining the role of architects and the relationship between residents and their buildings.

summary New social phenomena like digital nomads urge an upgrade in housing ownership. This research proposes an autonomous housing platform that shapes residential communities into adaptive and reconfigurable systems, framing a cycle of digitalization, fluidization and materialization of housing ownership. Specifically, the interactive interface carries the flexible ownership model that uses virtual space voxels as digital currency; the artificial intelligence algorithm drives the multilateral ownership negotiation and circulation, and modular robots complete the mapping from ownership status to real spaces. Taking project TESSERACT as a case study, we verified the feasibility of this method and presented expected co-living scenarios: the spaces and ownership are constantly adjusted according to demands and are always in the closest interaction with users. By exploring the ownership evolution, this research guides an integrated and inclusive housing system paradigm, triggering critical evaluation of traditional models and providing new ideas for solving housing problems in the post-digital era.

summary Reinforced concrete has been one of the essential materials for modern architecture for the last hundred years. Its use is entirely global, having been adopted by all cultures and styles since its invention in the late 19th century. Although its value is excellent due to its low cost, durability and adaptability, its environmental impact is significant, being, in fact, one of the most polluting industries in the world (Babor et al. 2009). This experimental project will research a more sustainable use of concrete, exploring a new form of reusable concrete formwork that will ideally reduce the CO2 footprint by removing wood waste in the casting process and replacing it with adaptable metal components. The modular part-based system for the concrete casting also attempts to simplify one of the current complexities for concrete construction, the Skilled-Labour shortage. (Yusoff et al. 2021). To mitigate this problem, the project also proposes using an Augmented Assembly logic for the casting parts to guide the ensemble and dismantle the formwork through an optimised algorithmic logic. The use of Augmented Reality as a replacement for traditional paper instructions will facilitate access to more workers to this construction art and potentially improve access to optimised use of concrete in developing communities with restricted building technological resources.

summary The Augmented Masonry Design project presents experimental research about developing and applying Augmented Reality (AR) technology for customized design algorithms, exploring a real-time, interactive, and spatial-free design method for the early architectural design stage. We aim to resolve the current 2D-based design limitations and provide architects with a 3D-4D immersive perception in AR for a practical and easy-to-use design method. Furthermore, with reference to the Covid-19 pandemic, we propose that this method could break through site accessibility and constraints by breaking the barriers of physical space. Towards this aim, we apply the Augmented Masonry Design into two prototypes: a) user interface (UI) immersive design, in which interactive inputs will communicate with design algorithms in AR through the inputs from the screen-based UI on mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets); b) intuitive interaction immersive design, in which interactive inputs will be translated to design algorithms directly in AR through hand gestures on head-mounted devices (HMD) (e.g., Microsoft HoloLens). Our Findings highlight the advantages of immersive design in the initial stage of architectural drafts, which gives designers better spatial understanding and design creativity, as well as the challenges arising from the limitations of current AR devices and the lack of real physical simulation in the design system.

title Encoding topological optimisation logical structure rules into multi-agent system for architectural design and robotic fabrication

summary Natural phenomena have been explored as a source of architectural and structural design inspiration with different approaches undertaken within architecture and engineering. The research proposes a connection between two dichotomous principles: architectural complexity and structural efficiency through a hybrid of natural phenomena, topology optimisation and generative design. Both Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimisation (BESO) and multi-agent algorithms are emerging technologies developed into new approaches that transform architectural and structural design, respectively, from the logic of topology optimisation and swarm intelligence. This research aims to explore a structural behaviour feedback loop in designing intricate functional forms through encoding BESO logical structure rules into the multi-agent algorithm. This research intends to study and evaluate the application of topology optimisation and multi-agent system in form-finding and later robotic fabrication through a series of prototypes. It reveals a supposition that the structural behaviour-based design method matches the beauty and function of natural appearance and structure. Thus, a new exploration of architectural design and fabrication strategy is introduced, which benefits the collab- oration among architects, engineers and manufacturers. There is the potential to seek the ornamental complexities in architectural forms and the most efficient use of material based on structural performance in the process of generating complex geometry of the building and its various elements.

summary Our approach to Generative Design converts the problems of design from the geometrical drawing of shapes in a continuous setting to topological decision making about spatial configurations in a discrete setting. The paper presents a comprehensive formulation of the zoning problem as a sub-problem of architectural 3D layout configurations. This formulation focuses on the problem of zoning as a location-allocation problem in the context of Operations Research. Specifically, we propose a methodology for solving this problem by combining a well-known Multi-Criteria Decision-Analysis (MCDA) method called 'Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution' (TOPSIS) with a Multi-Agent System (MAS) operating in a discrete design space.

summary Documentation of built cultural heritage is an important safeguarding strategy. However, the use of traditional documentation techniques, based on the direct acquisition of measurements with analog devices, makes the process time-consuming, inaccurate, and often inadequate for recording complex shapes, often found in the ornaments of certain architectural styles. This work explores the use of photogrammetry combined with digital fabrication in order to develop a methodology to document these elements of high geometric complexity, creating a workflow that connects digital techniques to traditional materialization techniques, exploring the potential of documentation to translate back into matter similar to that of the documented object. Seeking to validate these workflows, a series of prototypes are made in different materialities to evaluate the different techniques employed.

summary In this paper we are using the outputs of research led architectural design studios, originally articulated as pedagogical projects at the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, University of Edinburgh and the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen to explore and evaluate the possible transformative effects of blockchain/Decentralised Ledger technologies and decentralisation in the architecture discipline. After describing the pedagogical studio experiments, we frame a classification of relevant thematic clusters, where distributed ledger technologies can be applied to architectural design and thinking. The design studio, is treated as a methodological research tool, appropriate for the identification of existing knowledge gaps around the topic. The emerging classifications in terms of blockchain and decentralisation implementation is used to synthesise a map of future pedagogical and research activity.

summary An important part of a city, that gives it a sense of community and character, is its history. One way of acknowledging this heritage is by preserving historic building and structures. Old buildings are witnesses to the aesthetic and cultural history of a city, helping to give people a sense of place and connection to the past. Unfortunately, despite their importance within the city, historical buildings are most of the time subject to demolition and to be replaced- leaving behind stories told and untold of what use to be. The paper, therefore, aims to explore the capability of the metaverse, using virtual reality touring, to revive the memory of historical buildings that are subject to fade. Where preserving historical buildings can not only act as a symbol of grandeur but is also vital for reviving the community’s collective memory. The case study focused upon in the research paper shows a first step in the development of an immersive virtual tour for the significant building of “The Egg” or “Beirut City Center” in Downtown- which is a building that witnessed a series of unfortunate events that lead to destruction, erasure, and demolition of the building. Therefore, examining the recovery and revival of this unique historic site in an unconventional way which is in the metaverse, specifically the Virtual Reality (VR). The paper assumes that virtual reality, as the main metaverse approach, would help people ‘remember’ and ‘mentally revive’ the destroyed historical buildings that once acted as the building blocks in the impacted city. To prove this hypothesis, two different methodologies will be used, by theorical analysis and literature review, such as analyzing the main keyword, and analyzing datum from previous works. The second method will rely on the physical methodology, where virtual 3D Models will be built in a computer software, Autodesk Revit, then imported within a VR experience for an enhanced experience within the historical site to preserve the historic buildings and revive the collective memory within the community, enabling people to view how these historic sites once were and how they have now become.

summary Artificial Intelligence is a field that is able to learn from existing data to synthesize new ones using deep learning methods. Using Artificial Neural Networks that process big datasets, complex tasks and challenges become easily resolved. As the zeitgeist suggests, it is possible to produce novel outcomes for future projections by applying various machine learning algorithms on the generated data sets. In that context, the focus of this research is exploring the reinterpretation of 21st century urban plans with familiar artist styles using different subtypes of deep-learning-based generative adversarial networks (GAN) algorithms. In order to explore the capabilities of urban map transformation with machine learning approaches, two different GAN algorithms which are cycleGAN and styleGAN have been applied on the two main data sets. First data set, the urban data set, contains 50 cities urban plans in .jpeg format collected according to the diversity of the urban morphologies. Whereas the second data set is composed of four well-known artist’s paintings, that belong to various artistic movements. As a result of training the same data sets with different GAN algorithms and epoch values were compared and evaluated. In this respect, the study not only investigates the reinterpretation of stylistic urban maps and shows the discoverability of new representation techniques, but also offers a comparison of the use of different image to image translation GAN algorithms.

summary This paper presents an application of parametric techniques and tools to assess urban compactness in the city of Juiz de Fora, Brazil. A literature review identifies the objective metrics' role in urban design and how they are associated with the urban compactness paradigm. The case study provided results that characterize aspects of the built urban density and the mix of uses in the samples, exploring how parametric resources can help urban design. This research shed some light on how metrics can assist parametric urban design allowing performance measurement in the early design stages. It also highlights potentials, future studies, and challenges, establishing discussions about developing this field of knowledge in Brazil and even in Latin America.

summary In the past, spatial design was mainly from the perspective of designers. With the increasing demand for quality spaces, contemporary architecture has gradually shifted from focusing on form creation to human well-being, once again advocating the concept of "human-centered" spatial design. Exploring how the spatial environment affects human emotions and health is conducive to quantifying the emotional perception characteristics of space and promoting the improvement of human quality of life and sustainable survival. At the same time, the development of contemporary technology and neuroscience has promoted the study of the impact of spatial environment on human emotion perception. This paper summarizes the research on the impact of the spatial environment on human emotion perception in recent years. First, 28 relevant studies were screened using the PRISMA framework. Then a set of research processes applicable to this study is proposed. Next, the physiological signals currently used to study the effects of the spatial environment on human emotions are summarized and analyzed, including electroencephalography (EEG), skin response (GSR), pulse (PR), and four other signals. The architectural features studied in the related literature are mainly building structural features, building spatial geometric features, and building spatial functional attributes. The study of urban space is divided into different parts, such as urban environment characteristics and urban wayfinding behavior. Finally, we point out the shortcomings and perspectives of studies related to the influence of spatial environment on human emotion perception.

summary Urban building energy modelling (UBEM) has great potential for assessing the energy performance of the existing building stock and exploring various actions targeting energy efficiency. However, the precision and completeness of UBEM models can be challenged due to the lack of available and reliable datasets related to building occupant and layout information. This study presents an approach that aims to augment UBEM with open-data sources. Data collected from open data sources are integrated into UBEM in three steps. Step (1) involves the generation of occupant profiles from census data collected from governmental institutions. Step (2) relates to the automated generation of building plan layouts by extracting data on building area and number of rooms from an online real-estate website. Results of Steps (1) and (2) are incorporated into Step (3) to generate residential units with layouts and corresponding occupant profiles. Finally, we make a comparative analysis between data-augmented and standard UBEM based on building energy use and occupant thermal comfort. summary This paper addresses the conference theme of futuristic co-creation through inter- disciplinary research that brings together the fields of spatial design, music and sound and spatialisation in virtual reality (VR). We describe a ‘Networked Musico-Spatial Virtual Environment’ (NMSVE) that spatialises, in real time VR, frequency distribution and wave forms of live and recorded sound, provides a form of real-time 3D spatial notation of musical instruments (digital drum kit, keyboards) and sends and receives these spatialisations to two or more participants in different continents across the network. Through the NMSVE, new forms of ‘synaespatia’ can be enabled as the experience of sound and music through cross-domain spatialisation across a range of networked performance modalities. Whilst the technologies were developed primarily to advance musico-spatial performance, they offer significant potential to enable new understandings of sound and music for the hearing impaired and as a research tool for architectural acoustics.

AR applications within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry have seen constant research and development as designers, fabricators, and contractors seek methods to reduce errors, minimize waste, and optimize efficiency to lower costs (Chi, Kang, and Wang 2013). Recent advancements have made the technology very accessible and feasible for use in the field, as demonstrated by seminal projects such as the Steampunk Pavilion in Tallinn, Estonia (Jahn, Newnham, and Berg 2022). These types of projects typically improve manual craft processes. They often provide projective guidelines, and make possible complex geometries that would otherwise be painstakingly slow to complete and require decades of artisanal experience (Jahn et al. 2019). Building upon a previously developed robotic tube bending workflow, our research implements a custom AR interface to streamline the bending process for multiple, large, complex parts with many bends, providing a pre-visualization of the expected fabrication process for safety and part-verification purposes. We demonstrate the utility of this AR overlay in the part fabrication setting and in an inadvertent, human-robot, collaborative process when parts push the fabrication method past its limits. The AR technology is also used to facilitate the assembly process of a spatial installation exploring a unique aesthetic with subtle bends, loops, knots, bundles, and weaves utilizing a rigid tube material.

Orbital’s dynamic form evokes an era of rapid change and uncertainty, while also inspiring curiosity and playful interaction.

summary This paper presents investigations on 3D printed formwork for MBC using different polymers. The method is demonstrated via two large-scale prototypes, and major findings are critically discussed. It is shown that different polymer materials can be used for growing MBC, and that the choice of material affects the final component. The research aims to promote the creation of low-embodied energy and fully biodegradable building components by exploring 3D printed formwork for mycelium-bound composites.

summary For adaptive facades, the dynamic integration of architectural and environmental information is essential but complex, especially for the performance of indoor light environments. This research proposes a new approach that combines computer-aided design methods and machine learning to enhance the efficiency of this process. The first step is to clarify the design factors of adaptive facade, exploring how parameterized typology models perform in simulation. Then interpretable machine learning is used to explain the contribution of adaptive facade parameters to light criteria (DLA, UDI, DGP) and build prediction models for light simulation. Finally, Wallacei X is used for multi-objective optimization, determines the optimal skin options under the corresponding light environment, and establishes the optimal operation model of the adaptive facades against changes in the light environment. This paper provides a reference for designers to decouple the influence of various factors of adaptive facades on the indoor light environment in the early design stage and carry out more efficient adaptive facades design driven by environmental performance.

summary In today’s Architectural design process, there has been considerable advancements in design computation tools that empowers designer to explore and configure the building façades schemes. However, one could formally argue that some processes are prescribed, lacks automation and are only for the purpose of visualizing the aesthetic design concepts. As a result, these design concept explorations are driven manually to exhibit variations between schemes. To overcome such limitations, the development presented here describes a proactive approach to incorporate parametric design thinking process and Building Information Modeling (BIM). This paper reports on an ongoing development in computational design and its potential application in exploring an interactive façade pattern. The objective is to present the developed approach for exploring façade patterns that responds parametrically to design-performance attractors. Examples of these attractors are solar exposure, interior privacy importance, and aesthetics. It introduces a paradigm-shift in the development of design tools and theory of parameterization in architecture. This work utilizes programming script to manipulate the logic behind placement of faced panels. The placement and sizes for the building facade 3D parametric panels react to variety of Analytical Image Data (AID) as a source for the design-performance data (e.g.: solar exposure, interior privacy importance, and aesthetics). Accordingly, this research developed the PatternGen(c) add-on in Autodesk ® Revit that utilizes a merge (or an overlay) of AID images as a source to dynamically pattern the building façade and generate the facade panels arrangement rules panels on the building exterior. This work concludes by a project case study assessment, that the methodology of applying AID would be an effective dynamic approach to patterning façades. A case-study design project is presented to show the use of the AID pixel-gradient range from Red, Green and Blue as information source value. In light of the general objectives in this study, this work highlights how future designers may shift to a hybrid design process.
